It had been a week since our family returned to the United States, yet everything still felt strangely unchanged. The streets were familiar, the air smelled the same, and the city moved just as fast as it always had.
I was laying sprawled across my bed with my uniform on, staring at the ceiling with a dramatic sigh.

“Thea! Stop lurking around up there and come down already! Your first day of school starts in an hour!”
My mom yelled from downstairs

I ended the call and slid into the car as the driver pulled away from the driveway.
As usual I was leaning against the hallway wall with cigarette balance between my fingers and students passes by in fear-filled glances.
