"Emrys, wake up."
My older brother, Darwin, called out from the kitchen.
I was still lying in the bed, even though I had a doctor appointment today.
I was soon to be 18, and I had to be evaluated as an omega, alpha or beta.
"Emrys!"
I had one older brother Darwin, and one younger brother Florin.
I also had an older sister, but she lived in another kingdom, she moved there for work.
My older brother was an alpha, a recessive one, but an alpha.
I didn't want to be an alpha nor omega, I wanted to stay as a beta, though I knew I wouldn't.
In this world, there are recessive alphas, alphas, dominant alphas, royal alphas, enigmas and royal enigmas. The same goes with omegas.
The higher the level, the better the alpha or omega.
Royal alphas or enigmas, who are already as rare as one 10 million lottery, are usually only born into royal or imperial families.
They possess strikingly good looks.
Royal omegas, heck, only dominant omegas are rarer than anything in the world.
Being born one means luck, or unluck.
Why?
If you're born good as such an omega, you're well taken care of, you might marry your prince charming.
If you're born as a normal person, walking on the streets, working your ass off, then you're just fucked.
The moment you're found out to be such an omega, you go to a registry, they match you with an alpha or enigma of such caliber and technically make you marry them.
You can say no. But most don't care, here, alphas have the bigger hand. Omegas are like nothing, they are considered to be good for just one thing.
Breeding.
Yes, sex, then children, heirs, another mating season, another children.
For alphas? Fun.
For omegas? Pain.
Not everyone is like that, not all omegas get treated like shit, but most of them, yes.
I am not from a well-off family, we're not struggling, we're not dying of hunger, but we live discreetly.
We try to blend in with the crowd, or at least I do.
My older brother is a psychologist, helping people in need.
My younger brother is a disaster. He's always running all over the place.
Florin is 3 years younger than me, he has time.
Darwin's 7 years older than me, our parents didn't really plan another children after him, but me and Florin turned out to be.
He's 25 and started working few months ago, he's already very well liked among the people.
And I? I'm 18, trying my best to hide the fact that I know what I am.
I'll tell you why, and how I know.
There is one more type of omega, a hyper dominant one. That's more than a dominant one.
But these three, dominant, hyper dominant and royal, go through a so called "magical transformation", scientist don't know why, but every time such an omega is found their eye and hair colors change.
From brown to blond, from blond to black, from black to brown or blond.
Mine was different. I had black hair all my life. My eyes shone blue.
Suddenly, one day I woke up with my irises red. Not just pinkish red, full on glowing bloody red.
I panicked right away, I knew what it meant, I was one of these three omegas.
I desperately wished for myself to be just a dominant one, but nowhere on the internet was said that dominant omegas undergo such a transformation, this was more fitting for hyper dominants.
I started crying right then and there.
It's already been 4 months since then.
I always wake up, put on lenses that cover the color of my eyes and go on with my everyday life.
After that, I started sending pheromones, they were everywhere. As if they followed me.
I wanted to start using inhibitors, but the cheap ones usually didn't work for dominant omegas and above.
Still, I bought them and used them, they eased my pain a little, but it wasn't total.
One month after my eyes changed colors, my hair started turning white. Yes, white.
I've never heard of any omega's hair turning white.
That was just...unnatural.
Right that day, I went to a drug store and bought black hair dye.
I've been dying my hair since.
Living with the fear of being recognized.
To be continued...
"Emrys, you lazy pig." Florin mocked from behind the couch, where he was sitting, scrolling on his phone.
"Shut up, you're not much better from me." I mocked back.
"Stop it you two!" Darwin had enough of our bickering for the day, even though it was still just morning.
"Sorry, brother, but he's so annoying."
"Yeah, yeah, you better turn out to be a dominant omega today, so we won't have to see you again."
My heart tightened. I knew his words weren't meant to be mean, because he always laughed at me, saying I won't be nothing more than a beta.
I knew he didn't know what I knew, he was mocking me, trying to annoy me, he was my little brother.
"He didn't mean it like that, Emrys, calm down."
Darwin saw my distress and tried to calm me down.
"I know." I said blankly.
"I meant what I said." Florin scoffed.
"Florin, stop it! You're scaring your brother!" Darwin raised his voice.
"So what? I would kill to be a dominant omega, living in a palace." He smiled as he turned on his stomach and stared at me and Darwin.
"It's nothing good to be a dominant omega, or omega at all." I said, looking down on my feet.
"Yeah, sure, sure."
He still didn't know what it meant to become an omega overnight, to be taken away from the things you knew. He was still just a child. A 14 year old kid.
"He's probably beta, anyway, omegas or alphas usually show symptoms around their 15 years."
Florin said casually.
He was right, Darwin, who is a recessive alpha, showed symptoms of pheromones around the age of 15-16. He started sensing pheromones and emitted his own.
Omegas had similar symptoms, they just went through heat, whereas alphas had ruts.
"Florin's right, no need to worry, Emrys." Darwin reassured me.
But I knew something he didn't.
Maybe I should tell them, maybe I can't mask that I'm an omega, maybe I'll never see them again after this, but I won't just let them take me away, I'll fight, I'll run.
"Actually..." I started.
"Hmm?" Darwin looked at me as he got up from the couch he was sitting on, next to me.
"What, do you want to tell us you're actually omega and have been hiding this the whole time?" Florin laughed, amused.
Darwin chuckled.
I didn't.
Darwin stopped, his eyes narrowed.
"What do you want to say, Emrys?"
"Come on, Darwin, he's making fun of us." Florin said calmly.
"Right?" He added, when he saw my face didn't change at all.
My eyes teared up.
Sniff...
"Emrys?" Darwin came closer, his hands tightening on my shoulders.
"What's happening?"
"Emrys...are you for real?" Florin's voice trembled now.
"I'm sorry..." My voice came out soft, shallow.
Darwin's eyes widened. Florin gasped.
"Well...even if you're an omega, we're going to make it, we'll buy you suppressants and..."
"My eyes changed..." I said quietly, before he could say any more.
Darwin went quiet, his body stiffened.
"Your eyes...changed?" Florin repeated.
"I use lenses..."
Sniff.
Florin rushed to me and made me look up.
"Take them out, now!" his voice was scared, his eyes were wide.
I stepped back into the bathroom to wet my hands and take out the lenses.
When I came out they were out, my red eyes shone through.
Gasp.
Florin put a hand before his mouth.
"They are...red."
"But you can cover them! You can say you didn't change on anything, that...that...hic."
Florin started sobbing. Darwin patted his back.
And I?
I just looked down. They had monitors, machines for detecting the secondary genders. I can't fool the system.
"How did you make it without heat?"
Darwin asked, his voice hard.
"I took normal suppressants..." I answered him truthfully.
"I see..." He nodded.
"What now?" I asked.
"..." Darwin stayed quiet, he didn't know what to do now.
He didn't know if I was gonna be taken away, but he knew he couldn't protect me from it.
To be continued.
We stared at each other for a while, I was sitting on the chair in our kitchen, Darwin and Florin were sitting on the couch.
"What...am I supposed to do?"
"You should be happy..." Florin talked as if this was a happy moment.
"What do you mean, Florin? Emrys might be taken away and he should be happy?"
"Well, he's getting a big chance at getting into a rich family! He might live the life all of us want!"
"Do you think he wants to live in a loveless marriage? Even if it's a wealthy family!?" Darwin shot back, his eyes narrowing and his face getting visibly red.
"I would want to! I'd get married right away! He's just looking for attention anyway, he's waiting for the moment he can spread his legs-!"
Slap.
My hand move don it's own. I knew Florin was in shock, he needed time to process everything, but this was too much, even for me.
"Hah." He laughed.
"See, he doesn't care anymore." Florin rubbed his red cheek.
"That's enough, Florin, how can you talk like that about your brother?" Darwin spoke, his voice betraying his cold expression.
"I now get, why mom and dad left us in your care."
Our parents left, once Darwin came of age. They said they needed time to think, time for themselves. Funny, cause it's been 7 years already.
They only send cards for Christmas and birthday, a few words on a paper.
I remember them, but just a little, I was 10 when they left, Florin was 7, so he doesn't recall much.
"They hated the fact that they had Emrys unintentionally."
Yes, I was the uncalled child. They didn't expect me, they didn't want me.
They showed it to me my whole life. But Florin was the golden boy, he might not remember everything, but he knows it.
Even Darwin always treated him with love and cherished him, so did I.
But today, he overstepped.
Today, I hated him.
"Will you be happy once I'm gone?" I asked.
"Probably..." Florin sounded like he regretted everything he just said.
"Brother... I'm-"
"Stop. It's okay..."
He tried to apologies, but no apology was needed, I didn't care anymore.
Today was the day, today was my end.
Or maybe new beginning.
I sighed.
We still didn't know what to say.
"Maybe...maybe you won't be a dominant..."
"Yeah...maybe."
"Should I go with you?" Darwin looked me in the eye and asked.
"No, I want to go alone." I smiled, knowing this might be the last time I see my brothers.
Florin hugged me from behind.
"I shouldn't have said those horrible things."
"It's fine."
"I don't want you to leave."
"I know."
I didn't want to leave either.
But now was the time to go.
"I have to go to the hospital." I said slowly.
"Alright...take care...call me later...when you're...done." Darwin said, his voice trying to hide the sobs.
"I will."
I smiled again. I took on my jacket, it was early spring, my birthday is 2nd March, today was 10th March.
I put on my best shoes and closed the door behind me. The morning air was chilly.
My lungs took in a cold breath. I started walking, my heart was pounding like hell.
I took some suppressants before I left, but it wasn't enough.
When I walked in through the hospital door, the receptionist told me where to go and sit.
I have them my card and waited.
There was a lot of young people there, they looked anxious, they had a reason to be.
Maybe one of them would be an omega, his life would become hell, and in the end he's loose himself.
Just like my future looks like now, dark, sorrowful.
I just hoped for the best husband they could get me. I knew I was at least a dominant omega, but I tried to believe, to hope.
"Emrys Falladela!" The nurse called my name, my hands started trembling. I got up from my seat, eyes watching me, feeling pity for me, just like for themselves.
"Hello."
"Good morning, Mr. Falladela." It was a female doctor.
She had a kind smile, but I knew every doctor tried to look nice enough for people to trust them, then stab them in the back when they begged to not be taken to some rich alpha.
"What do you feel yourself to be?" She asked, probably trying to get information from me, if I experienced some changes.
"Like a normal beta." I said, while smiling at her.
"I see, alright, we'll know what you are soon enough." She gestured me to sit down.
I knew what was coming, and it wasn't good.
