Crowned In Rivalry

CHAPTER 1: The funeral that brought them together

...'Rain fell like a quiet verdict over the...

... Laurent estate.'...

*Black umbrellas gathered in disciplined rows across polished marble. Politicians, corporate magnates, silent shareholders who were far more than investors every powerful figure in the city had come to witness the burial of Alistair Laurent.*

But this was not simply a funeral.

It was the transfer of a crown.

Lucien Laurent stood at the head of the grave, dressed in tailored black, gloves smooth against steady hands. His posture was immaculate. His

expression unreadable.

No tears.

No trembling.

Only control.

Behind the legitimate empire of Laurent Global lay something far less public port dominion, offshore

accounts, silent acquisitions, and influence that could end a man without ever touching him.

As the coffin lowered, whispers began.

“He’s young.”

“Will he hold the territory?”

“Crowe has been waiting for this.”

Lucien heard every word but he simply did not react because kings did not flinch at gossip nor they do something about it.

Just then, The distant hum of engines cut through the rain.

The gates opened.

The courtyard shifted.

It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t chaotic.

It was subtle the kind of silence that spreads when a predator enters.

*The Crowe crest gleamed on a black car door as it opened.*

Arden Crowe stepped out without an umbrella.

Rain traced along the sharp line of his jaw, dark hair slightly damp, suit perfectly tailored but worn with

deliberate ease. His movements were unhurried.

He walked like a man who feared nothing.

Some called him self-made.

Others called him inevitable.

Lucien watched him approach the grave.

The distance between Laurent and Crowe territory had always been measured carefully — balanced like a blade on its edge.

Arden stopped just close enough to challenge the boundary.

Their eyes met.

This time, neither of them stood behind their fathers.

“My condolences,” Arden said, voice smooth, almost respectful.

*Lucien’s** gaze was cool.*

“You came uninvited.”

*“I go where power shifts.” *Arden replied.

...----------------...

Rain fell heavier, as if pressing the moment into

memory.

*Arden’s eyes** flicked briefly toward the descending coffin before returning to Lucien.*

“And today,” he added softly, “it shifted to you.”

The watching elites pretended not to listen.

Lucien stepped forward — not retreating,

not defensive but equal.

*“You’re bold,” Lucien said evenly, “attending a Laurent funeral.”*

*A faint smile curved Arden’s lips.*

“I didn’t come for him.”

The meaning was unmistakable.

Lucien felt something sharp move beneath his ribs which was not fear.

Recognition.

Arden tilted his head slightly, studying him.

“You look different without him standing behind you.”

Lucien didn’t hesitate. “And you look ambitious

standing on my soil.”

There was a pause before——

...----------------...

Arden leaned closer — just enough that only Lucien could hear him.

“You’re not a boy anymore, Laurent.”

It wasn’t praise.

It wasn’t insult.

It was assessment.

Lucien held his gaze steadily.

“This is still Laurent territory.”

Arden’s smile deepened subtle, dangerous. “And you’re standing in my city now.”

The coffin disappeared into the earth. And with it, the final restraint between old empire and rising power.

No guns were drawn.

No threats shouted.

But something ancient had awakened.

Two heirs.

One city.

And neither intended to bow.

CHAPTER 2: The First Boardroom Without a King

...----------------...

The Laurent headquarters had always felt imposing.

Today, it felt watchful.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the steel-gray skyline, rain still clinging to the glass from the

morning’s funeral. Inside the executive boardroom, the longest table in the building stood polished to a mirror shine — twelve high-backed chairs aligned with

precision.

Only one remained at the head.

Lucien Laurent took it without hesitation.

He did not ask for the seat.

He simply occupied it.

Around him sat board members who had worked

under his father for decades — men who measured worth in profit margins and fear. Their expressions were respectful.

But not convinced.

*“Shall we begin?**” Lucien asked calmly, folding his gloved hands on the table.*

A murmur of agreement followed.

Before anyone could speak further, the double doors opened.

No announcement.

No apology.

Arden Crowe entered as if summoned by the silence itself.

He was dressed in charcoal this time, tie loose,

expression unreadable. Two of his advisors lingered behind him, but it was clear who commanded the room.

Several Laurent executives stiffened. But Lucien did not.

“Mr. Crowe,” one board member began stiffly, “this is a private—”

*“It’s a courtesy visit,” ***Arden** interrupted smoothly.

*His gaze never left Lucien. *“Surely Laurent Global doesn’t fear transparency.”

The word transparency landed like a blade disguised as silk.

Lucien gestured lightly toward the empty chair halfway down the table.

“If this is a courtesy, then sit.”

Arden’s eyes flickered with something approving brief, almost amused.

He sat.

Not at the head.

But not submissively either.

The room felt smaller.

*Lucien **began the meeting with numbers port

distributions, offshore holdings, upcoming acquisitions. His voice was steady, precise, controlled.*

He did not falter once. As Arden listened quietly.

*When Lucien finished outlining their expansion into the eastern docks territory long disputed between Laurent and Crowe influence — Arden leaned back slightly.*

“Ambitious,” he said.

A board member cleared his throat. “The docks have historically been under Laurent supervision.”

“Historically,” **Arden* echoed softly. As his gaze shifted to **Lucien***.

“But history changes.” Silence settled.

*Lucien ***met his eyes directly. “The docks are under Laurent** jurisdiction.”

“For now.” The challenge was unmistakable.

One of Lucien’s senior advisors bristled. “Are you

implying encroachment?”

Arden’s expression didn’t change.“I’m implying

competition.”

Lucien removed his gloves slowly a deliberate

motion.

“I wasn’t aware *Laurent** Global *had invited

competition into its boardroom.”*Arden **leaned forward slightly.*

“You didn’t.”

The air sharpened.

“But I am here because when a throne loses its king,” Arden continued evenly, “others assess the stability of the crown.”

There it was.

Not an insult.

A test.

Lucien stood.

Not abruptly.

Not emotionally.

He walked around the table until he stood directly across from Arden.

Close enough that the power dynamic could not be mistaken.

*“If you’re assessing stability,” Lucien said quietly, “then assess carefully.”*

*Arden **rose as well.

They stood eye to eye.

Equal height. Equal presence.*

*“I never miscalculate,” Arden replied.*

*Lucien’s **voice lowered, almost intimate.*“Then

understand this clearly.”

The entire boardroom held its breath.

“Laurent territory does not fracture.”

A pause.

“And neither do I.”

*For a moment, something shifted in Arden’s

expression not mockery, not dominance.*

But Interest.

A Genuine interest.

He studied Lucien as if seeing him fully for the first time.

“Good,” Arden said softly.

“Because if you fractured…” He didn’t finish the

sentence because he didn’t need to. It was a obvious sentence.

Arden stepped back first — but only physically.

“This city is evolving,” *he said smoothly, addressing the room now. *“Let’s hope Laurent Global evolves with it.”

And then he walked out.

The doors closed.

Only then did the board members begin breathing again.

*Lucien** returned to the head of the table. His pulse was steady. But something unfamiliar lingered beneath his composure.*

*Arden Crowe **hadn’t come to intimidate.*

*He had come to measure. And for the first time, Lucien understood something dangerous.*

This rivalry would not be loud.

It would be personal.
