Nan Chenwan swallowed a deep breath and turned to glare at the guy who was annoying the hell out of her.
"What is wrong with your brain?" she hissed but loud enough for the entire class to hear.
Some boys snickered and gave Nan Chenwan a thumbs up, saluting her for her outburst.
Song Feng was the envy of the boys in the class. He was rich, handsome and a playboy. Girls were drawn to him like moths drawn to a flame.
Why did they even like to date him when they knew very well that they won't last a week?
Nan Chenwan rolled her eyes. She couldn't believe she had thought this guy was quite cute back then on her first day of high school. She wanted to wash herself with holy water when she remembered her short time crush on him two years ago.
"Come on, only for today," Song Feng said, pouting oh-so-innocently, as if nobody would see through his dirty mind.
"Can't you ask the other girls who are more willing?" Nan Chenwan retorted, quite annoyed with his constant pestering.
Gosh, who would ask a random girl to spend the night with him?
"But I want you though," he replied with his seductive face adorned by a smirk.
Nan Chenwan scoffed sarcastically and turned her back to him, walking away.
"Just wait, Nan Chenwan, one day, you'll be begging for me."
Nan Chenwan ignored his self egoed declaration. If Song Feng had not resembled her first crush, she won't be bothered to interact with him. They had looked so similar when she first saw Song Feng but after some time she had found that their personalities were totally different.
Song Feng was a jerk who treated girls like playthings. He changed his girlfriends like changing clothes.
While her first crush was a cute little chubby boy who acted very matured.
Nan Chenwan blushed when she thought about her first crush. She was 15 then and was about to be a high school student. Every adolescent girl dreamt of being saved by a knight in shining armor. And just like her childish fantasy, a very handsome chubby boy had saved her from a pick-pocketer and he became her first crush. And since the day was the Chinese New Year, he had bought a pretty little necklace for her.
"Ouch!" Nan Chenwan hissed when she bumped into something hard. Her head hurt and she expected to hear an apology but-
"Don't you have eyes?" an awfully arrogant voice spoke up.
Nan Chenwan frowned. Very rude! Let's do it the hard way then.
"Oh then you must be so blind to not see me having eyes," she rolled her eyes looking up to him. He-he's very handsome!!
But on second thought, she wondered if he was one of those boys who'd try to get her attention by pretending to not know her and annoy her.
"Are you hitting on me?" Nan Chenwan asked, with a tinge of pride. The guy in front of him was handsome. She thought why she had never seen him before. Was he a junior?
"Hah! Hitting on you?" he sniggered with full sarcasm in his voice.
Nan Chenwan had wanted to forgive him for the bumping incident considering his handsomeness but his attitude right now ignited her already irritation caused by Song Feng.
"If you like me then say it cut and straight."
If he was not handsome, Nan Chenwan would have ignored him. Damn that handsome face challenging her resolve!
The guy smirked and cocked his head a little. He narrowed his eyes at her body from head to toe and threw out a sentence. "You aren't even attractive." And he walked away with a cool I'm-the-best aura.
"You aren't even handsome," she roared back, ignoring the baffled looks from the other students.
Nan Chenwan gritted her teeth. She was very attractive alright? She was one of the Belles of the school!
She returned to her class only to have everybody stared at her like she had done something very weird. She thought it was about her encounter with the arrogant guy.
"Wanwan, don't be sad," Song Feng came up and pinched Nan Chenwan's cheek much to her dislike.
"Stop pestering me, Song Feng," she pushed him aside and took her seat. Can't the bell just ring already? All her classmates were looking at her like she was the heroine of a movie.
If it had been the first day of school, she won't have mind but what about now? She thought her classmates had already been immune to her looks.
"Let's go on a date this evening. I promise I'll make you feel better," Song Feng said, a seductive smirk adorning his already handsome face.
"I'm perfectly fine, Song Feng."
Nan Chenwan gave him her best forced smile. She was in an annoyed mood. That handsome guy's face was hovering in her mind ever since the encounter.
"Aww, my cute Wanwan is trying to act strong. Did you forget to study while thinking about me? I knew you have a soft spot for me."
Nan Chenwan choke at the shameless words uttered by Song Feng. She looked at him bewildered and badly wanted to scratch off that smirk off his. Thinking about him all day? Gah! she'd rather drown herself.
"Are you done talking?" she crossed her arms and gave him an annoyed look.
"Ok, ok, no need to get so pissed off just 'cause you went down to second spot," Song Feng raised his hands as if surrendering.
Nan Chenwan frown. What was he talking about? What did he mean by she went down to second spot?
"What are you saying?" she held back Song Feng and looked at him questioningly. "What do you mean by I went down to second spot? Is there something I don't know?"
"You haven't seen the result?"
At that, Nan Chenwan suddenly remembered that the result for the previous term exam would be declared today. She cursed at herself wondering how she could have even forgotten about it.
She rushed towards the school bulletin board. Usually she would find her name at the topmost but this time was different.
"2nd rank, Nan Chenwan," a voice which she had heard before uttered, a very charming voice indeed. That arrogant handsome guy!
"I had got a bad feeling when I met you. I'm blaming you for this result," Nan Chenwan pushed the blame on him, wanting to get rid of the sourness. Now the girls must be gloating at her downfall.
"So your name is Nan Chenwan," he asked more like stated in an amused tone.
Nan Chenwan scowled. Why was he acting like he knew her?
"Congrats on getting 2nd rank," he threw out a compliment and walked away with his hands inside his pocket.
When he was out of sight, she turned around and looked at the notice board to see who got the first place in her class.
Pei Anzhi? Who the hell was Pei Anzhi?
Nan Chenwan felt sour all over. It hurt her pride that she moved down to second spot. What would her parents say?
I mean, they wouldn't scold me but they would somewhat be sad right?
This was the first time she got second place ever since she moved to this school. She had always been in the first place. And because of that, teachers loved her. She was the teachers' pet, the guys' goddess and the envy of the girls.
So at this time she was very curious about this Pei Anzhi. She had never heard of him and they had a big difference of 13 marks. Was he from another section? A rising genius?
She looked around for someone who she could probably ask questions regarding Pei Anzhi but it seemed everyone was busy with their own things.
She saw Song Feng flirting with a girl student. Didn't they have any decencies? She nearly gagged when the girl kissed him and Song Feng seemed so shocked at what she did. His eyes wondered around as if looking for someone.
And when their eyes met, Song Feng was very surprised and pushed the girl away. Nan Chenwan scowled. First, he was being affectionate with her and suddenly he discarded her away. Playboy will always be playboy. A tiger never changes his spot.
Nan Chenwan turned away. And Pei Anzhi invaded her mind again.
Pei Anzhi, ah Pei Anzhi, you're making me curious.
The bell rang and the students scattered to their own places. Nan Chenwan didn't have a seatmate so the place next to her was empty.
The homeroom teacher entered and there was silence in the class. The teacher was a lady in her mid thirties. She was pleasing to look at but was still single. She gave Nan Chenwan a sympathetic smile. Nan Chenwan smiled back assuringly at her.
"Now since, we are at the half of the year, I have been thinking of changing your places," she declared and there was groaning and murmuring in the whole class.
"Make new friends, okay?" she gave her students a soft smile.
Some students were grunting 'no, please'. The seat change didn't bother Nan Chenwan since she didn't have anyone she was close with in the class. The girls in the class were not that friendly with her though she talked with them. It was like there was a sort of barrier between her and them.
And Nan Chenwan was someone who would rather spend time with herself than make friends.
The homeroom teacher scanned the classroom as if searching for someone. "Where is he?" she asked to herself impatiently but soon regained her composure when she saw the students staring at her.
"Okay, to make it simpler, you are going to sit according to the marks you scored in the last exam. The students with the least marks will seat in the front so as to be more attentive and it'll be better for the teachers to keep a closer eye on them. Though you could choose sitting next to Nan Chenwan," the teacher ended with the last suggestion.
At the teacher's words, the guys in the class scrambled around Nan Chenwan. The girls had an awkward look on their faces.
Their homeroom teacher scowled. She opened her mouth to interject the commotion around Nan Chenwan's seat but before she could say anything, the classroom door opened and a guy entered.
"Oh Anzhi, I thought you won't come today."
Nan Chenwan jolted in her seat when she heard the homeroom teacher's sentence. What? Pei Anzhi was someone from their class? Then why have she never heard of him before?
"I was at the administrator's office. I'm sorry for being late," an awfully familiar voice spoke up.
Nan Chenwan ignored the guys fighting to be her seatmate and craned her neck to get a glimpse of the said Pei Anzhi.
"It's fine. It's fine," the homeroom teacher said with the most ladylike tone the students had ever heard from her.
Nan Chenwan felt her jaw dropped when she saw the supposed to be Pei Anzhi. It was the handsome arrogant boy she bumped into. What a small world!
She frowned when she saw the other female students trying to look as presentable as ever. She even saw some of them pulling their skirts up.
"*He's so handsome."
"F*ck he's hot."
"He kinda looks similar to Song Feng."
"He's Pei Anzhi? The Pei Anzhi who dethroned Nan Chenwan? He's so attractive and sexy."
"Yeah I thought Pei Anzhi was a nerd. Never imagined he'd be this handsome."
"Wow he's in a different league."
"He's my new crush. I call dibs on him now."
"Imagine marrying him*."
Nan Chenwan could hear the different compliments thrown at Pei Anzhi. Hot and sexy? Hah, they need to see an ophthalmologist! At which part was he hot and sexy?!
"Anzhi, you take a seat next to Nan Chenwan," Nan Chenwan felt that a crisis was about to come. She wanted to reject the homeroom teacher's suggestion but then looking at the fanboys fighting over the next to her, she thought otherwise.
Pei Anzhi came over and said in a very arrogant tone, "Move."
Surprisingly, the guys gave way to him.
And while Nan Chenwan was enjoying the sudden quietness, she heard his voice above her head. "I want to sit next to the window."
Nan Chenwan nearly fell down from her seat. He did not just order me!? "No," she scowled giving him a harsh glare.
"Rude," he muttered and took the other seat.
"You're the one who's rude!" Nan Chenwan hissed back. He was the one who ordered someone who he's not even acquainted with and he dared to comment about rudeness? Damn him.
"Ok class, take your assigned seats," the homeroom teacher said and after everyone took their place, she added, "You might not know about your new classmate, Pei Anzhi."
The girls echoed a harmonious 'yes' with an overly sweet tone.
The homeroom teacher continued. "Classmate Pei Anzhi enrolled to the school early this year but due to his personal reasons, he went overseas and returned just before the term exam. I thought it was a perfect timing and asked him to give the exam a shot to evaluate his understandings for the nation's college entrance examination syllabus. He did and got the first place. Isn't that wonderful?" the homeroom teacher finished with a slight squeal.
Wow, they didn't know their homeroom teacher had a thing for younger guys.
Everyone except Nan Chenwan were clapping. Even Song Feng who hardly gave a damn about anyone's academic performance was clapping like a kid proud that his elder brother won a big prize.
Pei Anzhi uttered a short 'Thank you' and ignored the rest of the excitement.
The whole class, Nan Chenwan sneaked glances at Pei Anzhi and found that he was very attentive to all the lectures. Even she couldn't do that!
Time went so fast and the lunch bell rang.
Just as Nan Chenwan stood up, "Are you dating Song Feng?" Pei Anzhi spoke up.
"First Brother, stop teasing me," Song Feng came out of nowhere and said shyly.
"No. I'd rather remain single than date him."
Pei Anzhi let out a small smile as he uttered, "Good."
"Show off," Nan Chenwan muttered rolling her eyes.
Ever since Pei Anzhi came to the school, girls have been flocking around him for any problems they couldn't solve and he would help them with a very gentleman smile.
Nan Chenwan scowled. His handsome face was a waste. It would have suited him if he instead acted cold and aloof.
"Why can't you give me your attention like you gave First Brother?" Song Feng came out of nowhere and startled Nan Chenwan.
"You want me to glare at you?"
Song Feng shrugged his shoulder and said, "If that's even possible." Somehow Nan Chenwan noticed that his voice has a certain tinge of sadness in it.
However she shook off the thought when a random girl suddenly came and sat on his lap, "Brother Feng~" she cooed with a voice which Nan Chenwan thought it was overly sweet.
"Hi Wanwan," the girl also greeted Nan Chanwan and flashed her a smile. It couldn't be denied that she was indeed very beautiful. She was Song Feng's current girlfriend.
Song Feng let out a deep sigh and massaged his temple. "What do you want?" he asked so uninterested that Nan Chenwan found it odd.
She had always thought that Song Feng would take initiative in being intimate with the opposite gender. She never expected the school playboy to treat his girlfriend indifferently.
"I miss you, Brother Feng," the girl pouted and puckered up her bright red lips.
Nan Chenwan unconsciously touched her lips. Her lip was small and not full. It didn't make her look seductive enough.
Seeing Nan Chenwan subconscious action, Song Feng smirked and traced his fingers at his girlfriend face and murmured in a seductive voice but loud enough for Nan Chenwan to hear, "What should Brother Feng do so that you'd forgive me, hmm?"
His girlfriend giggled shyly.
"Go and take a room," a voice suddenly barged in.
Pei Anzhi took a seat next to Song Feng and watched Song Feng pushed his girlfriend away. "Try to be serious in your relationship," he commented.
Song Feng just smiled and said, "It's fine as long as Wanwan is not disgusted with me."
Nan Chenwan frowned when she was suddenly pulled into the conversation. She glared at the two guys and said, "Are you kidding me?Do you expect me to go, 'wow brother Feng you have many girlfriends, can I be one too?' I'd be damned."
Pei Anzhi lips quirked up a little when he heard her comment. He was suddenly in a good mood.
"First Brother, my Wanwan is beautiful right?" Song Feng had noticed the slight shift in Pei Anzhi. He was suddenly overcome by a sense of crisis.
"I'm not yours," Nan Chenwan spat out.
Pei Anzhi muttered in a slight daze. "Indeed."
Nan Chenwan suddenly felt her cheeks go hot. But he said before that I was unattractive.
As if he hadn't said the comment, Pei Anzhi shifted his seat and let out a loud snort "Heh!" and continued to look her from head to toe like he had done the first time they met. "She's cute like the Pomeranian in your house."
Nan Chenwan choked. Did he just compared her to a dog?
"Hah!" Nan Chenwan rolled her eyes and leaned closer to him. She whispered, "You are sexy like my neighbor's cat." Saying that se stood up and left leaving a startled Pei Anzhi.
Nan Chenwan went to the school swimming pool. She wanted to vent the frustration of being went down to second spot. She could still see in her mind many female students gloating over her deprovement.
She looked at her watch and changed into her swim suit. She still had twenty minutes before the next class. Students usually didn't come at the pool during lunch break.
It had been a long time since Nan Chenwan joined the swimming class. She hadn't joined the class since the start of her third year.
Just as she was about to enter the pool, a head popped out. "My god! what are you doing here?" She cried out pressing her hands against her chest. He had scared the hell out of her.
"Me? I'm eating. Duh, of course I'm swimming," Pei Anzhi answered in a mock tone.
"I mean, when did you get here?" she swore he was with Song Feng when she left the classroom.
Not hearing any response from the male, Nan Chenwan felt awkward. It'd be better to leave him alone. She turned to her heels and walked away.
"Hey, you can use the pool now. I'm over."
Nan Chenwan heard Pei Anzhi coming out of the water. She quickly turned around. "It's okay. I'm actually not that - " the remaining words got stuck in her throat.
Heol! he's hot?
Pei Anzhi had looked thin when he wore the school uniform so Nan Chenwan never thought the guy would be quite leaned and muscular. Those abs man, those six packs. Nan Chenwan gulped. With his hair slicked back because of the wetness and the water droplets dripping down, the whole of Pei Anzhi's body was screaming out 'sexiness'. Nan Chenwan felt her imagination go wild.
This guy is a walking time bomb. All the female students heart will explode if they see him like this.
Suddenly Nan Chenwan felt happy that she was the only one who saw him semi-nude. She was filled with a sudden pride.
Pei Anzhi lips twitched when he saw the female infront of him staring at him like he's a masterpiece. Nan Chenwan face and neck was covered with a deep shade of red and Pei Anzhi found her quite cute.
"Regret telling I look like your neighbor's cat?" Pei Anzhi smirked bringing the girl out of her daze. He saw her blushed deeper. He chuckled lightly and went to pick his clothes.
Nan Chenwan felt like she was hit with a huge truckload of embarassment. She just couldn't believe she had ogled at a guy's body. She found her own actions quite perverted. She wondered if Pei Anzhi thought she was a pervert.
Pei Anzhi changed into the school uniform and turned to walked out. Just as he opened the door, he turned back and commented, "You look like an airport runway with your swimsuit."
When he saw Nan Chenwan's face went redder, he chuckled lowly and disappeared out of the door.
Nan Chenwan was dumbfounded. She glanced down at her chest. It was not flat but not too huge either. It was quite alright according to Asian standard. She didn't want to brag but she had what people called a firm, perky breasts.
For Nan Chenwan, the day got over with Pei Anzhi's toned body image terrorizing her mind every nanosecond. Was she becoming abnormal?
As soon as she opened the main door of the house, she could hear her father and mother fighting. She found it weird. Her mom and dad never fought.
"I knew they were upto something," she heard her mom cried out.
Nan Chenwan hid behind the door and wondered what they were talking about.
"They wouldn't have helped us if they didn't want something in return," Mommy Nan sobbed.
Help? Return? Nan Chenwan furrowed her brows. She could hear her dad sighing too.
"My child, my Wan'er," her mother broke down crying bitterly.
Why was she suddenly included?
"It'll be fine. They helped us so they might be better than we thought," Papa Nan comforted his wife.
Nan Chenwan thought it'd be better to interfere their conversation. "Mom, dad, what's wrong?" she asked, pretending not to have overheard their conversation.
Mommy Nan immediately rushed forward and hugged her daughter. She patted Nan Chenwan's cheeks and said, "Wan'er, when did you return?"
"Just now," she replied, not wanting to tell them that she had eavesdropped in their conversation. "What were you and dad talking about?" she sounded curious.
Mommy Nan shook her head. "Nothing important. Mom and dad will deal with it."
Nan Chenwan turned to look at her father when she didn't get the answer from her mother.
Her dad just sighed and rubbed his forehead.
Nan Chenwan frowned thinking that there's something deeper in their conversation and that it had something to do with her.
And she found out about it the next day.
