[Chapter 2]
The Night She Chose Silence
The distance did not happen suddenly
It grew quietly like something forming in a dark corner
Slow
Unnoticed
Spreading while both of them pretended nothing had changed
He felt it in the pauses
In the way her laughter arrived a little late
In the way she stopped asking about his day with the same warmth
But he blamed himself
Because when you love someone deeply you start protecting them from your own doubts
That night the sky was unusually clear
He had been waiting for her call
She had said I will call you after dinner
Dinner ended two hours ago
He kept staring at the screen
No notification
No apology
No explanation
When she finally called her voice sounded far away
Not tired
Not angry
Just distant
"Hey" he said trying to keep his tone steady
"Hey" she said in return
The space between them felt heavier than usual
"Did I do something" he asked softly
Silence
Then a slow breath on the other side
"No-It is just.....I think we have become too much"
Too much?.....
The words did not attack
They settled
"Too much how?" he asked
"I feel pressured.....I feel like I cannot breathe sometimes.....It feels heavy" she answered
Heavy
He felt his chest tighten but he did not raise his voice
He had tried to love her gently
He had given her space
He had stayed awake when she cried
He had folded himself smaller whenever she seemed overwhelmed
And still
He was heavy
"I never wanted to make you feel that way" he said
"I know" she replied
That was what made it worse
He was not cruel
Not careless
Not toxic
He simply loved her in a way that asked for depth
She continued speaking
"I think I need something lighter.....Something that does not feel so serious"
Serious?
To him love was serious
It was not temporary
It was not entertainment
It was not something you played with
It was promise
It was future
It was weight
"So what are you saying" he whispered
Another pause
"I think we should stop"
Not slow down
Not breathe
Not try
Stop
The word felt final even without sound
"Is there someone else" he asked
"No" she answered quickly
There was no one else
There was just her fear of drowning in something permanent
He nodded even though she could not see
"Okay"
Just that
Okay
She expected him to fight
To beg
To ask her to stay
Instead he became quiet
And that silence unsettled her more than anger would have
After the call ended he did not move
His phone lay beside him
The room felt unfamiliar
As if something invisible had shifted
He replayed the words
Too much
Heavy
Stop
And something inside him cracked
Not loudly
Just enough to change him
Meanwhile she stared at her screen
Waiting for a message
Waiting for him to make it harder
Nothing came
Only silence
And for the first time
Silence did not feel peaceful
It felt like the beginning of regret
Some decisions do not hurt in the moment
They wait
That night she chose silence
She did not know that one day silence would choose her back too....
