[Chapter 3]
The More He Held On
He did not let her go easily
After that night
After she said they should stop
After that quiet "okay"
He called her again
The phone rang longer this time
When she picked up her voice was guarded
"Why are you calling"
"I just want to understand"
"There is nothing to understand"
"There has to be"
He was not angry
He was shaking
"Did I love you wrong" he asked
"No"
"Did I expect too much"
"No"
"Then tell me what I am fixing"
Silence
He could hear her breathing
Slow
Uneven
"You are not fixing anything" she said finally
"I just feel suffocated"
That word broke something in him
"Suffocated"
"Yes"
"I gave you space whenever you asked"
"I know"
"I never forced you to choose me over anyone"
"I know"
"I never stopped you from living your life"
"I know"
Each "I know" felt heavier than blame
Because she was not accusing him
She was simply stepping away
"I love you" he said quietly
There was a pause on the other side
"I care about you" she replied
Care?
Not love?
The difference felt endless
He tried again
"We can slow down"
"I do not want to slow down"
"We can take a break"
"I do not want a break"
"What do you want"
"I want space from this completely"
Completely
He felt his throat tighten
"You are asking me to disappear"
"I am asking you to let me breathe"
He closed his eyes
Every instinct inside him wanted to hold on harder
"I can change"
"You should not have to change"
"I will if it means you stay"
And that was the moment she knew she had to leave
Because his willingness to reshape himself for her
Made her feel guilty
Made her feel responsible for a heart she was not strong enough to protect
Later that evening he went to see her
Not to fight
Not to create drama
Just to look at her while speaking
They stood facing each other
"Please" he said softly
"We can fix this"
She looked at him
"I do not want to fix it"
"Do you not love me anymore"
She swallowed
"I do not love you the way you love me"
That honesty hurt more than lies....
"The more you hold on" she whispered
"The more I want to walk away"
He stepped back as if those words physically pushed him
"I was only trying to stay"
"I know"
"And I was only trying to leave without hurting you more"
But it was already too late for that
He looked at her one last time
"If you walk away now" he said
"I will not stop you again"
She hesitated
Just for a second
Then she turned
And walked
He did not follow
Because he finally understood
You cannot force someone to stay by loving them harder
That night he stared at his phone
No calls
No messages
His chest felt hollow
He wanted to type
"I miss you already"
But he did not
Because every time he tried to hold her
She needed to run
So this time
He let her
