The Palace of Eternal Spring was quiet in the late afternoon, the kind of stillness that felt like a held breath.
In the Pavilion of Crimson Peonies, Han Jungkook stood at the inner gate of his chambers, gazing out over the private garden.
In his arms, wrapped in silk the color of dawn, his son slept—a boy of barely three months, the only warmth left in Jungkook’s world.
The soft rustle of brocade announced a visitor long before the voice did.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“So this is where the once-unrivaled Consort Han has been hiding.”
Jeon Jungguk said from the threshold, his tone light, almost amused, as though he had stumbled upon a forgotten relic in a dusty corner of the palace.
Jungkook did not turn. He adjusted the infant’s blanket with deliberate care, shielding the child’s face from the faint breeze.
Han Jungkook/ Consort Han
“The hour for audiences is past, Consort Jeon. The Emperor is in council. You should return to your own pavilion.”
Jungguk stepped inside anyway, the hem of his sapphire robe whispering over the polished floor.
He was younger by three years, sharper in every line—cheekbones like blades, eyes that carried the gleam of new triumph.
The Emperor had summoned him to the dragon bed every night. Gifts arrived daily: jade hairpins, bolts of cloud-brocade, a lute inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The entire harem knew whose star was rising.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“I’m not here for His Majesty.”
Jungguk said, coming to stand just behind Jungkook’s shoulder. Close enough that Jungkook could smell the rare incense clinging to his sleeves—the same fragrance the Emperor favored now.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“I came to pay my respects to once eternal consort Han.”
Jungkook’s fingers tightened almost imperceptibly on the child.
Han Jungkook/ Consort Han
“Then pay them and leave.”
Jungguk tilted his head, studying the infant with a small, pitying smile.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“Such a quiet little thing. Does he ever cry? Or has he already learned that tears gain nothing here?”
Jungkook turned then, slowly, meeting Jungguk’s gaze for the first time. His eyes were steady, but something ancient and exhausted lived behind them.
Han Jungkook/ Consort Han
“He sleeps peacefully because he is loved. Something you will understand in time—or perhaps never.”
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“Loved. How touching. Tell me, Consort Han—when His Majesty still came to you every night, did you believe it would last forever? Did you think a single womb could hold the Emperor’s heart indefinitely?”
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“You think bearing his son makes you eternal. But you’re already forgotten."
Han Jungkook/ Consort Han
“I never asked for forever. I asked for nothing at all.”
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“Is it? When the Emperor has not crossed your threshold in years? When even the eunuchs speak of you in the past tense?”
Jungkook’s jaw tightened, the only sign the barb had landed.
Han Jungkook/ Consort Han
“Speak plainly, Consort Jeon. You came here to wound. Do it cleanly and be done.”
Jungguk leaned in, voice dropping to a venomous whisper.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“Very well."
“You are just a rusted ornament gathering dust. Enjoy your garden and your bastard while you can."
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
"His Majesty has tasted something fresher, sweeter, younger."
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
"When I bear the next prince, your name won’t even be a whisper. It’ll be nothing.”
For a long moment, Jungkook said nothing. The plum blossoms continued to fall outside, silent and indifferent.
Then he looked down at his son, brushing a fingertip over the infant’s soft cheek. When he spoke again, his voice was quiet, but each word carried the weight of years spent learning how to survive.
Han Jungkook/ Consort Han
“Enjoy your nights while they last, Consort Jeon."
*said without looking up*
Han Jungkook/ Consort Han
“The dragon’s favor is a fire that burns brightest just before it consumes."
Jungguk’s smile faltered, just for an instant.
Jungkook turned back to the garden, dismissing him as completely as the Emperor once had.
Han Jungkook/ Consort Han
“Close the gate on your way out, Consort Jeon. The wind is cold, and my child is precious.”
Jungguk lingered a moment longer, the taste of victory suddenly ash in his mouth. Then he swept out, robes flaring like dark wings.
Behind him, Han Jungkook remained at the gate, holding his sleeping son, watching the plum blossoms fall—one by one—onto still water.

Jeon Jungguk stormed through the corridors of the Palace of Eternal Spring like a gathering typhoon, his sapphire robes snapping behind him.
Eunuchs and lesser consorts scattered from his path, sensing the storm in the set of his shoulders and the dangerous glitter in his eyes.
By the time he reached the Pavilion of Azure Clouds—his pavilion, newly bestowed, fragrant with fresh sandalwood and piled with imperial gifts—the rage had boiled over.
Inside, his maids froze in the midst of arranging fresh orchids, their faces paling at the sight of him.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“Out."
*snarled, voice low*
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“All of you—out!”
The youngest maid, a girl of barely sixteen, dared a step forward.

“Your Grace, perhaps some tea—”
Jungguk snatched a porcelain vase from the nearest table—an exquisite piece from the southern kilns, a gift from the Emperor himself—and hurled it against the wall. It shattered into a hundred jade-green shards.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“I said 𝗢𝗨𝗧!”
The maids fled, skirts fluttering like startled birds, leaving him alone in the wreckage of his fury.
He swept an arm across the lacquered vanity, sending combs of kingfisher feather, vials of rare perfume, and a mirror inlaid with pearls crashing to the floor. Glass splintered; the sharp scent of crushed musk and rose oil filled the air.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“How dare he."
*said through clenched teeth, pacing like a caged leopard*
He kicked at a silk cushion, sending it spinning into a brazier; embers scattered across the rug.
Hyejin/Jungguk's personal maid
"Master-"
Hyejin/Jungguk's personal maid
“Please, calm your noble heart. Whatever has upset—”
Jungguk whirled on her. His eyes were fever-bright, pupils blown with rage.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“Calm?”
He snatched the nearest object—a jade-handled fan—and flung it at her feet. The ivory ribs snapped like dry twigs.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“You think I should be calm when that discarded whore dares speak to me as though we breathe the same air?”
He kicked over the low rosewood table. The inkstone tumbled, black ink blooming across the pale silk carpet like spilled blood. A scroll of his own poetry—calligraphy he had labored over for weeks to please the Emperor—crumpled beneath his heel.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“Clutching his worthless brat like it means something.”
His voice rose, venom dripping from every syllable.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“He thinks a single bastard child ties the Emperor to him forever? He dared to look down his nose at me? Me? The one His Majesty summons every night? The one whose name is on his lips when he wakes?”
Jungguk laughed, a sharp, ugly sound, and flung a jade hairpin across the room. It struck a painted screen, leaving a chip in the phoenix’s wing.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“Viper”
*spat chest heaving*
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“As if he isn’t the snake who slithered into favor first, bore a son, and now clings to the scraps like a starving dog."
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
"He’ll rot in that pavilion, growing old and bitter while I rise higher than he ever dreamed.”
He snatched up a delicate wine cup—thin as eggshell, painted with peonies—and crushed it in his fist. Blood welled from a cut on his palm, bright against the pale porcelain shards.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“I am the Emperor’s desire now."
He whispered, voice trembling with rage and something perilously close to fear.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“I am the one he touches, the one he praises, the one he keeps until dawn. And that ghost in the Crimson Peonies thinks he can wound me with his calm little words?”
Jungguk’s head snapped up.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“Stop sniveling. Clean this mess. And if a single word of this leaves these walls—”
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“I will have your tongues nailed to the gate of the Cold Palace."
The maids scattered like startled sparrows.
Jeon Jungguk/ Consort Jeon
“Count the nights, he said.”
He dragged his palms down his cheeks, leaving red streaks like war paint.
