Just for Fun

Pokemon

The morning sun spilled over the rooftops of Pallet Town, painting the world in honeyed light. Tira stood at the gate with her small pack and a heart too full to stay. At her feet, Eevee shifted from paw to paw, tail flicking like a restless flame. Today wasn’t just a departure—it was a promise to the dreams she’d carried since childhood, of distant cities, fierce battles, and bonds stronger than fear.

Professor Oak’s lab windows glimmered behind them. Tira bowed once toward the familiar place, then turned toward the road. Eevee glanced back too, ears drooping, before Tira knelt and touched her forehead to its soft fur. “We’ll come back stronger,” she whispered. Eevee chirped, resolve sparking in its eyes.

The route beyond town unfolded in green waves of grass and wind. Butterfree drifted above wildflowers; a Rattata rustled unseen. Tira walked slowly, learning Eevee’s rhythm—the cautious pauses, the sudden bursts of curiosity. When Eevee chased a scattering of petals, Tira laughed, the sound surprising her. She had imagined adventure as grand and loud, but it began in these small, shared wonders.

Near noon, clouds gathered. The path narrowed into a copse of tall trees, their leaves whispering secrets. A sharp cry split the quiet. Tira froze. Another cry followed—thin, frightened. Eevee’s ears shot up, and it dashed toward the sound before Tira could call it back.

They found the source in a shallow ditch: a young Pidgey tangled in fallen twine, wings thrashing weakly. Eevee approached, hackles raised, unsure. The Pidgey snapped its beak in panic. Tira slid down the bank slowly, palms open. “It’s okay,” she murmured. “We’re not here to hurt you.” Her voice trembled, but she held steady.

Eevee looked from Tira to the trapped bird, then stepped closer, lowering its head. Its growl softened into a questioning chirr. Tira eased the twine loose, careful not to startle. The moment the last knot slipped free, Pidgey burst upward—then faltered, dropping to a branch above them, panting.

For a heartbeat, everything stilled. Then Pidgey hopped down, regarding them with wary eyes. Eevee sat back, tail sweeping the dirt once, twice. The forest held its breath. Finally, Pidgey dipped its head—a fragile gesture of thanks—before winging into the canopy.

Tira exhaled, hands shaking. Eevee bounded into her arms, licking her chin as if to chase away the fear. “You were brave,” Tira said, pressing her face into its fur. “Braver than me.” Eevee squeaked in protest, nuzzling her harder.

Rain began as a hush, then a silver curtain. They sheltered beneath an ancient oak, sharing berries and warmth. Tira traced the lines of Eevee’s ears, thinking of the road ahead: Gyms, rivals, nights under strange stars. She realized the journey wasn’t about proving herself to the world. It was about becoming someone her partner could trust when storms came.

When the rain passed, the forest glittered anew. Tira rose, shouldering her pack. Eevee leapt down beside her, steps light, eyes shining. Together they returned to the path, two small figures in a vast land, already changed by a single act of kindness.

Far above, a Pidgey circled once before vanishing toward the horizon—where countless adventures waited, and a legend, quietly, began.
