chapter one
A high-end art gallery in Milan. The air is thick with the scent of expensive perfume and pretension.
Critic: (Clutching a champagne flute) Elias, darling, the lighting on the Grit series is surgical. Pure genius.
Elias
(Smiling that practiced, hollow smile)
Elias
I’m glad you felt the... precision.
Elias
Genius? My soul feels like a darkroom where someone left the door open and ruined the film.
Elias
Elias stayed until the last bubble of champagne goes flat.
Elias
He retreats to the back office.
Elias
The silence hits him like a physical blow
The office is dimly lit by the blue glare of a laptop screen.
Marcus
Marcus is typing, his face sharp and predatory
Marcus
The London shoot is confirmed for Tuesday, Elias. British Vogue.
Marcus
They want that ‘cold, architectural soul’ you’re famous for.
Marcus
Keep it sharp. Keep it distant
Elias
(Looking at his numb hands)
Elias
I’m not going to London, Marcus.
Marcus stops typing. The silence is heavy
Elias
I need a change of light.
Elias
The shadows here... they’ve gone predictable. They’ve gone dead.
Marcus
(Eyes narrowing) We have a schedule, Elias.
Elias
My "Prodigy" status is running out of film.
Elias
There’s nothing left in the tank. I need to go south.
Elias
Somewhere the light burns instead of just reflecting.
Marcus
A "scouting trip." But Elias? Don't come back empty-handed. Bring back something I can sell.
Elias
(Whispering) I'll bring back something real
A nameless, crumbling pension in the old quarter of a Mediterranean city.
Elias wanders the labyrinthine backstreets. His Leica camera is tucked under his coat.
Elias
Another corner, another postcard.
Elias
Beautiful. Stagnant. Empty.
He turns a sharp corner. The shadow of a medieval clock tower falls across a hidden square.
The air changes—it smells of roasted coffee and linseed oil.
A shock of ultramarine blue slashes against the dusty terracotta walls
Near a crumbling marble statue, a boy is perched on a folding stool, painting with frantic, joyful energy
Elias
He looks like a bright bird nested in a stone forest.
Elias raises the camera, his finger hovering over the shutter.
Elias
Wait... if I click this now,
Elias
I’ll break the spell.
The boy sways to a silent melody, smearing a drop of blue paint back into his canvas with a thumb
Elias
For the first time in my life, I’m terrified of the camera.
Elias stays rooted in the shadows of the archway,
A ghost afraid of his own haunting, watching the boy paint toward the sun
Chapter 2
Elias
(Watching through the lens)
Elias
He’s not just painting.
Elias
He’s converting the sun into a color. I’ve never seen anything so... honest
The boy, Min-ho, is a mess of pigment.
His oversized sweater sleeves are pushed up, revealing forearms splattered like a galaxy in ultramarine and crimson
Elias
(Finger trembling on the shutter)
Elias
Don't do it. Don't break the spell.
Elias
If you take this, you’re just a thief again.
But muscle memory is a cruel thing. His finger clicks.
The sound echoes through the silent square like a gunshot
His brush hand jerks violently.
A glob of bright sunflower yellow lands right on his thumb
Min ho
(Freezing mid-motion) ...!
Min-ho slowly turns his head.
His dark brown hair shifts, revealing wide, startled eyes
Elias
(Lowering the camera, face pale)
Min ho
(Staring at the stranger in the shadows)
Elias
I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you. I just...
Elias looks like he wants to hide the Leica.
His "Prodigy" armor has completely shattered
Elias
I shouldn't have taken it. It was... an instinct. I'm sorry.
A silence stretches between them.
Min-ho looks down at his yellow-stained thumb
Min ho
(A tiny, melodic giggle escapes him)
Elias
(Blinking in confusion)
Min ho
(Holding up his yellow thumb like a trophy)
Min ho
I think the painting wanted a bit more yellow anyway.
Min-ho beams a smile so bright it feels like a physical light hitting Elias’s face
Elias
(Feeling the "silver dust" finally clear from his throat)
Elias
You’re not... angry?
Min ho
The light is too beautiful today for that.
Min-ho pats the stone ledge next to his easel
Min ho
Do you want to see?
Min ho
Or are you only going to look through that glass box all day
Elias
(Stepping out of the shadows)
Elias
I think... I'd like to see.
Min ho
(Wiping his stained thumb on his paint-covered sweater)
Min ho
Did you get a good one?
Min ho
(Tilting his head curiously)
Min ho
I’m told I make very strange faces when I’m concentrating
Elias
(Voice dropping an octave)
Elias
I got a perfect one.
Elias
I wasn't talking about the lighting or the frame.
Elias
I was talking about the life radiating from him. I can feel it in my lungs... making my head swim.
Min ho
(Cheeks flushing a soft peony pink)
Min ho
A student, actually.
Min ho
I’m just... trying to catch the light before it moves. It’s so fast, isn't it?
Min ho
world never wants to sit still.
Elias looks at the canvas. It’s a rebellion of ultramarine and sunflower yellow—messy, vibrant, and alive
Elias
(Murmuring) I spend my life trying to freeze time.
Elias
But I think you’re the one who’s actually keeping it alive.
Min ho
(Softly) I'm Min-ho.
Min-ho offers a hand stained with three different colors
Elias
(Taking the messy hand without hesitation) .
Suddenly—a swarm of loud tourists descends upon the fountain.
Min ho
(Startled, pulling his hand away)
Elias
Elias feels the loss of contact like a sudden drop in temperature
Min ho
(Looking at Elias's palm)
Min ho
I’ve marked you! I’m so sorry, Elias. Here, let me—
Min-ho fumbles for a stained rag, looking flustered
Elias slowly curls his fingers inward, clenching his fist over the blue smudge
