The Unknown

Prologue: The Girl Who Stopped the Thief

Morning sunlight stretched across the busy street, warming the cracked pavement and the colorful market stalls. Vendors called out their prices, voices overlapping with the rumble of motors and the chatter of people passing by.

The old district was alive.

Steam rose from bamboo baskets filled with dumplings. A butcher chopped meat behind his counter. Children in school uniforms hurried past with backpacks bouncing on their shoulders.

Among the crowd walked an old woman.

Her silver hair was neatly tied into a small bun, and deep lines framed her gentle face. She moved slowly, leaning slightly on a wooden cane. On the other hand, she held a small cloth purse tightly against her chest.

Inside the purse were the savings she had carefully collected for months.

To her, it was precious.

She stopped near a fruit stall, looking at a basket of oranges.

"How much are these today?" she asked kindly.

But someone nearby had already noticed the purse.

Across the street, leaning against a rusted metal pole, stood a man wearing a dark hoodie. His face was partially hidden, but his eyes were sharp and restless.

He watched the old woman carefully.

His gaze followed the purse.

He waited.

People passed between them. A delivery driver pushed a cart. Two teenagers laughed as they crossed the road.

The man pushed himself off the pole.

Then-

In a sudden blur of motion—

SWOOSH!

He dashed forward.

His hand shot out like lightning and snatched the purse straight from the old woman's grip.

The force pulled her forward.

"Ah—!" she cried, almost losing her balance.

Before anyone could react, the thief had already turned and started running down the street.

For one second, everything froze.

Then the shouting began.

"Thief!"

"He stole from the old lady!"

"Catch him!"

The old woman reached out helplessly.

"My purse! Please—someone stop him!"

Several people began to chase after the thief.

A delivery driver dropped his boxes and ran. Two young men sprinted after him, weaving through the crowd.

But the thief was fast.

He dodged between stalls, knocking over baskets of vegetables.

"Move!" he shouted, pushing people aside.

The gap between him and the crowd slowly widened.

He glanced back and smirked.

Too slow.

None of them could catch him.

Just a little further—

Then suddenly—

THUD!

Something slammed into his side like a bolt of lightning.

Before the thief even understood what happened, his body spun through the air.

He crashed onto the pavement and rolled twice before stopping.

The street fell silent.

People stared in shock.

Standing in the middle of the road was a girl.

She looked no older than sixteen.

Her long dark hair swayed slightly in the morning breeze. She wore a simple school uniform, and a backpack rested casually on one shoulder.

One of her legs slowly lowered to the ground.

The kick she had just delivered had been clean.

Precise.

Powerful.

The thief groaned and tried to get up.

But before he could stand—

The girl stepped forward calmly.

Her movements were smooth and controlled.

She grabbed his wrist and twisted it behind his back with effortless precision.

CRACK.

"Aaaah!" the thief screamed, collapsing to his knees.

The crowd gasped.

"What—?!"

"Did you see that?!"

"She's just a kid!"

The thief struggled wildly, but the girl didn't move an inch.

Her stance was steady.

Balanced.

Like someone who had practiced martial arts for years.

The thief glared at her angrily.

"You little brat! Let go!"

Without raising her voice, the girl tightened her grip slightly.

The thief immediately cried out again.

"Stay still," she said calmly.

Her voice was quiet.

But it carried an authority that made even the crowd fall silent.

The old woman slowly approached, still shaking.

"My purse…" she said weakly.

The girl bent down, picked up the fallen purse from the street, and gently handed it to her.

"Please check if everything is still there."

The old woman opened it nervously.

Her eyes widened.

"It's all here…"

Tears filled her eyes as she looked at the girl.

"Thank you… Thank you so much, child!"

She tried to bow repeatedly, but the girl quickly stopped her.

"It's okay," the girl said softly.

By now, someone had already called the police.

Sirens echoed faintly in the distance.

The thief, still pinned to the ground, stared up at the girl in disbelief.

"You… you're just a kid…"

The girl didn't respond.

Her expression remained calm.

Almost indifferent.

Stopping criminals in the middle of the street was nothing unusual.

The crowd whispered among themselves.

"Did you see that kick?"

"She moved so fast!"

"That looked like real kung fu!"

"Who is she?"

The girl finally released the thief once the sound of the approaching police car grew louder.

She picked up her backpack and slung it over her shoulder.

As if nothing had happened.

As if it were just another ordinary morning.
