The Reaper Refused to Kill Me

Chp1 The Man Who Should Have Died

The rain fell hard against the city.

Neon Lights blurred across wet pavement as sirens screamed through the streets of Eryndale.

A bridge had collapsed.

Metal twisted like broken bones, cars hung half over the edge, and smoke filled the cold night air.

People were screaming.

Paramedics and firefighters rushed everywhere, pulling survivors from the wreckage.

And in the middle of the chaos -

Adrian Vale ran towards the danger

"Over here! someone's trapped!" a firefighter shouted.

Adrian didn't hesitate. He climbed over bent steel beams, rain soaking through his red rescue jacket as he dropped beside an overturned car.

Inside, a young woman was pinned between the crashed door and dashboard.

"Hey, hey" Adrian said gently. "Stay with me, Alright? "

Her breathing was shaky.

"I-I can't feel my legs..."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

He grabbed his radio.

"I need cutters here, now!"

Lightening flashed above the bridge.

For a moment, the entire world went silent.

The screaming.

The sirens.

Even the rain.

Everything slowed.

Adrian frowned.

That was strange.

And then-

Someone stepped out of the shadows.

Tall.

Pale.

Silent.

A man dressed entirely in black stood a few feet away.

Long dark hair fell over his shoulders like ink.

Silver chains hung from his coat.

And in his hand-

A massive scythe made of darkness.

Adrian blinked.

"... What the he'll?"

The man's pale eyes glowed faintly violet.

He looked down at the trapped woman.

Then at Adrian.

His expression was cold.

Detached. As if none of this mattered.

Slowly, he raised the scythe.

Adrian's stomach twisted.

"What are your doing?!" Adrian snapped.

The man didn't answer.

The blade moved towards the woman.

Adrian lunged forward and grabbed the stranger's arm.

"Hey! She's still alive!"

The moment Adrian touched him-

The man froze.

His glowing eyes widened slightly.

Humans could not touch him.

They couldn't even see him.

This one was staring directly into his eyes.

The rain began moving again.

Sounds crashed back into the world.

Sirens.

Voices.

Fire crackling.

But the strange man didn't move.

Neither did Adrian.

For Several long seconds they simply stared at each other.

...............

Finally, Adrian spoke.

"...You're not with emergency services, are you?"

Silence.

The man slowly lowered the scythe.

His voice, when he spoke, was quiet and cold.

"You should not be able to see me."

Adrian Raised an eyebrow.

"Well... I can."

The man studied him carefully now.

Almost curiosity.

Then he said something that made Adrian's blood run cold.

"You were supposed to die tonight."

Adrian blinked.

"... Excuse me?"

The man glanced towards the collapsed bridge.

"Falling debris. Impact to the skull."

Hos violet eyes returned to Adrian.

"You died twelve seconds ago."

Adrian stared at him.

Then laughed.

"Okay waw. This night just keeps getting weirder."

The man didn't laugh.

Instead, he looked... confused.

For the first time in centuries.

Because fate had never been wrong before.

And yet-

Adrian Vale was still alive.

A shout came from across the wreckage.

"Adrian! We've got the cutters!"

Adrian turned his head.

When he looked back-

The man was gone.

No footprints.

No shadow.

Nothing.

Only the sounds of rain and sirens remained.

Adrian rubbed the back of his neck.

"... Great," he muttered.

"Now I'm hallucinating."

But high above the bridge, standing on the edge of broken support beam-

The dark figure watched him.

The death demon's grip tightened on his scythe.

His voice barely above a whisper.

"... Why can you see me?"

For seven hundred years, Kaelith had taken countless souls.

He had never hesitated.

Never questioned fate.

Never Felt anything.

Until tonight.

Until Adrian Vale.

And somewhere dep in the underworld-

Something ancient stirred.

Because fate had just been broken.

And the consequences were coming.
