Legacy of Light

Prologue

The sky burned crimson over the battlefield, a reflection of the fire that had once raged within Phoenix Lux Walker. In her prime, she had been unstoppable—an alpha whose mental strength could shatter fortifications and bend armies to her will. Her name was whispered in awe and fear, a symbol of power that no one dared challenge. But power, she had learned too late, was a fragile thing.

It was a betrayal that brought her down. A blade, forged from a metal that could nullify even the strongest auras, slipped through her defenses, driven by the hand of someone she had once called a friend. The pain was searing, hot and cold all at once, as her mental strength drained away like water through cracked stone. She fell to her knees, her vision blurring, as the world around her faded into darkness.

“I will return,” she vowed, her voice a ragged whisper, as her life force ebbed away. “I will not let this be the end.”

And then, there was nothing.

When Phoenix opened her eyes again, the first thing she noticed was the softness of the bed beneath her—nothing like the hard, blood-soaked ground of the battlefield. The second thing was the silence. No shouts of war, no roar of power, no scent of smoke and iron.

She sat up, her head spinning, and looked around. She was in a small, bright room, filled with things she didn’t recognize—screens that glowed with light, strange devices, clothes that hung in a closet, unfamiliar to her eyes. She looked down at her hands—smaller, softer, unmarked by the scars of a thousand battles.

Panic flared in her chest as she scrambled out of bed and rushed to the mirror on the wall. The face that stared back at her was not her own. It was the face of a young woman, with striking features and eyes that held the weight of a past life, but a body that was weak, untrained, and… empty.

She reached within herself, searching for the fire that had always burned in her soul, the mental strength that had been her greatest weapon. But there was nothing. No roar, no warmth, no power. Just a hollow silence, as if the fire had been extinguished forever.

A name floated through her mind, unbidden: Phoenix Lux Walker. It was her name now, she realized. But the legend she had been was gone.

She stumbled back, collapsing onto the bed, her mind reeling. She had been given a second chance, but it was a cruel joke. She was an alpha, yes—but an alpha without any mental strength. Useless. Powerless. Just like everyone else.

For days, she wandered through this new world, lost and confused. She learned that she was a student at Starlight Academy, a place where alphas and omegas trained to hone their abilities, where strength was everything and weakness was mocked. She heard the whispers, the snickers, the comments about how “Phoenix Lux  has nothing but her looks.”

She wanted to scream, to tell them who she had been, to show them what she could do. But she couldn’t. The power was gone. And so, she did the only thing she could—she smiled, she laughed, she pretended to be the lazy, carefree alpha everyone thought she was. She hid the pain, the anger, the longing for the power she had lost.

But fate, she would soon learn, had other plans for her. Plans that would lead her into a dark alleyway, into the presence of an omega whose scent would change her life forever. Plans that would bring her face-to-face with the one person who would make her realize that power wasn’t the only thing that mattered.

Chapter 1: Reincarnation’s Cruel Joke

The last thing Phoenix Lux Walker remembered was the searing pain of a blade through her chest, her alpha power roaring one last time before darkness swallowed her. She’d been a legend—one of the most gifted alphas in history, her mental strength enough to bend wills and shatter barriers. But when she opened her eyes, she was in a stranger’s body, in a world that felt both familiar and alien.

A quick check confirmed her worst fear: she had no mental strength. None. The once-blazing fire in her soul was reduced to a faint spark, barely enough to register as an alpha’s aura. She was Phoenix Lux Walker now, a teenage alpha attending Starlight Academy, known only for her striking features and her… uselessness.

“Hey, Phoenix! Still lazing around?” a voice called out. Phoenix looked up to see a group of alphas snickering as they passed her dorm room. “Better get used to being a background character—you’ve got nothing going for you but that face.”

Phoenix just smiled lazily, leaning back against her bed. Let them think what they wanted. She’d been at the top before; she knew how to survive at the bottom. But she never expected that survival would lead her to mark an omega.

It was a stupid accident. She’d been cornered by a group of bullies, her weak aura no match for their combined strength, and had stumbled into a hidden alleyway. There, she found an omega—pale, with silver hair and eyes like storm clouds—huddled against the wall, their scent sweet and overwhelming. In her panic, Phoenix’s alpha instinct had kicked in, and before she knew it, her mark had burned into the omega’s neck.

The omega had frozen, then pushed her away, face flushed with anger and embarrassment. “What do you think you’re doing?!” they’d snapped, before running off into the night.

Phoenix had stood there, staring at her hand, her heart racing. She’d marked an omega. A stranger. And she didn’t even know her name.

"Risk It All" by Bruno Mars

For just the chance to win your heart

You could set the bar beyond the stars

I'll do anything, anything you ask me to

Say you want the moon

Watch me learn to fly

Ain't no mountain you could point to

I wouldn't climb

It's crazy, but it's true

There's nothing I won't do

I'd risk it all for you

To hold your hand and call you mine

I'm tryna be your man 'til the end of time

Oh, I'll do anything, anything you ask me to

I would run through a fire

Just to be by your side

If your heart's on the line

You could take mine

It's crazy, but it's true

There's nothing I won't do

I'd risk it all for you

I would swim across the sea just to show you

Sacrifice my life just to hold you

I could go on and on

To prove that you belong here in my arms

Say you want the moon

Watch me learn to fly

Ain't no mountain you could point to

I wouldn't climb

It's crazy, but it's true

There's nothing I won't do

I'd risk it all for you

It's crazy, but it's true

There's nothing I won't do

I'd risk it all for you

Chapter 2: The Top Combat Student

The scent of old paper and polished wood hung heavy in the classroom, a stark contrast to the sharp, metallic tang of adrenaline that still lingered in Phoenix’s veins. She sank into a wooden desk near the back, her backpack slipping off one shoulder as she tried to make herself small—an impossible feat, given the way her heart hammered against her ribs like a caged bird. Every nerve in her body felt raw, as if the night’s events had left her skin too thin, too sensitive to the world around her. She’d spent hours after the incident wandering the crowded streets of the city, her eyes scanning every face, every shadow, hoping to catch a glimpse of the omega she’d marked. But they’d been gone, vanished into the throng of people like smoke in the wind. By the time she’d stumbled back to her dorm, exhaustion had pulled her under, but even in sleep, the image of their storm-gray eyes had haunted her.

It was a mistake, she’d told herself over and over, pressing her palms into her eyes as she lay in the dark. A stupid, impulsive mistake. You lost control, and now they’re gone. You’ll never see them again. It’s better that way.

But fate, it seemed, had a cruel sense of humor.

The classroom door creaked open, and the chatter that had filled the room died instantly. Phoenix looked up, and her breath caught in her throat. Standing at the front of the class was the omega she’d marked the night before.

They were even more striking in the light of day. Their silver hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail, a few stray strands framing their sharp, angular jawline. Their storm-gray eyes were cold and unyielding, scanning the room with a detached intensity that made Phoenix’s skin prickle. They wore the academy’s combat uniform—black fabric reinforced with leather at the shoulders and elbows, a silver emblem of the school’s crest emblazoned on the chest—and it fit their lean, muscular frame perfectly, highlighting every line of their body. Even with their aura suppressed, Phoenix could feel it: a powerful, thrumming force that seemed to wrap around the room like a blanket, making her own weak, unsteady aura tremble in response.

Qilin.

The name echoed in Phoenix’s mind, loud and clear. She’d heard of Qilin, of course—everyone at the academy had. They were the school’s top combat student, a legend in their own right. Stories about them circulated through the hallways like wildfire: how they’d defeated a team of third-year students in their first month at the academy, how they’d mastered advanced combat techniques that even some teachers struggled with, how they never spoke to anyone, never let anyone get close. They were unattainable, high-and-mighty, a figure that existed on a pedestal far above the rest of the students.

And she’d marked them.

Phoenix’s stomach twisted. She thought of the night before, of the way she’d lost control, of the mark she’d left on their neck—a permanent reminder of her mistake. What would they do when they realized who she was? What would they do when they remembered?
