Suddenly, outside the orphanage, a car stopped at the gate.
One of the caretaker members noticed it through the window and walked outside to see.
At that moment, a small boy got out of the car, crying loudly.
The caretaker gently called the boy and took him inside the orphanage.
Hearing his cries, all the children ran outside to see what was happening.
All the kids ran around him curiously.
But one boy stood a little far away, silently watching everything.

He pointed at the kid beside him.

Kookie looked away shyly and took another sip of his banana milkshake.

Kookie smiled softly after hearing that.

Kookie blinked and looked at him.

Kookie looked at Taetae’s face for a moment.
Then he slowly nodded.
Taetae’s face lit up when Kookie nodded.
He gently held Kookie’s hand and started walking toward the playground.
For a second, Kookie looked at their hands.
He didn’t pull away.
From far away, the other kids noticed them coming.
Kid : Taetae! Is the new boy coming to play?
Taetae
Yeah! His name is Kookie.
The kids looked at him curiously.
Kookie slowly moved a little behind Taetae, hiding shyly.
Taetae noticed that and smiled.
Taetae
Don’t be scared. They’re nice.
Taetae
Do you want to play?
Kookie looked at all of them… then slowly nodded again.
Taetae
Okay! I’ll be on Kookie’s team!
The kids started running around the playground.
For the first time since he arrived at the orphanage…
Kookie slowly started to laugh.
After dinner, all the children went to their beds and lay down to sleep.
But Kookie was still sitting on his bed, hugging his pillow, his eyes filled with tears.
Taetae noticed him.
Quietly, he walked closer and softly called him.
Taetae
Shhh… it’s me, Taetae.

Why did you scare me like that?
Kookie said and started tearing up again.
Taetae
Aren’t you sleeping?

I’m scared to sleep alone…
Taetae looked around to check if the caretaker was nearby. There was no one.
Taetae
Okay… I’ll sleep next to you. You sleep, alright?
Kookie looked at him with wide eyes.
Kookie lay down but kept looking at Taetae.
Taetae noticed and started smiling.

Why are you smiling?
Taetae
If you keep looking at me like that, how will you sleep? Close your eyes. Only then you’ll fall asleep.

Okay… but you shouldn’t go anywhere.
Taetae
I won’t go. You sleep.
Kookie slowly closed his eyes.
Taetae watched him for a moment and then quietly closed his own eyes too.
Soon, both of them fell asleep.
Later that night, the caretaker came to check on the children.
She smiled when she saw them.
Taetae was sleeping beside Kookie.
She tried to gently lift Taetae to move him back to his own bed.
But she couldn’t.
She looked closer to see why.
Kookie was holding Taetae’s hand tightly in his sleep.
Seeing that, the caretaker chuckled softly.
She covered them both with a bedsheet and quietly walked away.
Taetae slowly opened his eyes.
He turned his head and saw Kookie still sleeping beside him, making a cute little pout.

Shhh… he’s sleeping. Don’t shout.
kid
(in a hushed voice) Okay… wake up. Let’s go brush.
Taetae
I’ll come. You go first.
The kid nodded and ran away, jumping happily.
Taetae slowly sat up.
Then he noticed something in his hand.
When he looked carefully, Kookie was still holding his hand tightly in his sleep.
Gently, he removed his hand from Kookie’s grip.
Then he lightly patted Kookie’s head and stood up to leave.
Even in his sleep…
Kookie smiled a little

(Murmured) Taetae...
After a few minutes, Kookie slowly started waking up.
He rubbed his eyes and looked around sleepily.
For a moment, he looked confused.
Then he quickly looked beside him.
Taetae wasn’t there.
Kookie sat up suddenly.
He looked around the room, but the other kids were already gone.
Kookie hugged his pillow and pouted.

He said he wouldn’t go anywhere…
Just then, Taetae came running back into the room.

Kookie! You woke up?
Kookie turned his head away angrily.

You said you wouldn’t go anywhere…
Taetae blinked in surprise.
Taetae
I only went to brush my teeth. I came back, see?
Kookie looked at him quietly for a moment.
Then he slowly stood up.

I want to brush too…
Taetae
Okay! Come, I’ll show you where.
He held Kookie’s hand and started walking with him.
