(Slamming the table) Where is the money, Meriem? The faculty sent the final notice. If you don't pay by 9:00 AM tomorrow, you are out!
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
I’m trying, Maman. I’ve applied for every tutor job in Algiers
..
..
(Sneering) Tutoring pays pennies. You’re a medical student. Use that brain. Find a way, or start packing your bags for the village. I’m not spending another dinar on your "dream
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(To herself, crying) I can’t lose this. Not after four years.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Meriem walks through the city, eyes blurred with tears. She sees a ripped poster on a telephone pole: "EGG DONATION - HIGH COMPENSATION - CALL IMMEDIATELY.")
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Trembling, dialing the number) Please pick up... please.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Deep, cold voice) Speak.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Hello? Is this... is this about the poster? The donation?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Pause) Yes. Are you healthy?
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
I’m a medical student. I know the procedure. I’m young, healthy... and I’m desperate.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Address is Hotel El-Aurassi, Penthouse B. Come now. Bring your ID.
(Meriem arrives at the luxury hotel. She knocks. The door opens to a man in a black silk shirt, looking dangerous and bored.)
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Breathing hard) I’m here. For the... for the procedure.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Scanning her body) You’re smaller than I expected. Sit.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Looking around the room) Where is the medical equipment? Where is the doctor?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Smirking) I’m the only one here. Why do we need equipment?
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
For the extraction! The needles, the ultrasound... how are you going to take the eggs?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Laughs darkly) Sit on my lap, little girl.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Confused, sits tentatively) Why? Is this part of the check-up?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Pulling her close) I’m going to "extract" what I need the old-fashioned way.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Eyes wide, pushing back) What? No! I’m here to sell my eggs! To a laboratory!
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Holding her waist tight) Look at the number you dialed, Meriem. You missed the last digit on the poster. You called my private line. I was looking for a girl for the night.

Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Horrified) No... no, I’m a virgin! I’m not—I’m not that kind of girl!
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Releasing her) Then leave. You’re wasting my time.
(Meriem runs outside. She calls the real agency from the poster.)
..
..
Sorry, miss. The program is closed for this month. Try again in six weeks.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Sobbing) Six weeks? I’ll be kicked out of school in six hours! Please!
(Meriem looks at the hotel entrance. She thinks of her step-mother’s sneer. She walks back inside. She knocks on the penthouse door again.)
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Opening the door, leaning against the frame) Back so soon?
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Tears streaming down) I need the money. My medical studies... they’ll end today if I don't pay.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Coldly) And?
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
If I stay... will you give me the money? The full tuition?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Lifting her chin) Every cent. But I don't pay for nothing. You know the price.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Nodding slowly) Yes.
(Rayane leads her to the bed. He is efficient, heartless. Meriem is shaking, her breath coming in short, panicked bursts.)
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Stop shaking. You made the deal.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
I’ve never... I don't know what to do.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Moving over her) Just stay still.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(As he touches her) Ah... wait...
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Don’t hold your breath.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Hnn... it's too much... please be careful...
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Ignoring her plea, moving faster) You’re tight.

Ah! Uh... Rayane... stop... no, don't stop...
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Voice low) You’re learning fast for a medical student.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Mmm... ah... please... it hurts... ah... hnn...

(He finishes, rolls away, and goes to the shower without a word. Meriem curls into a ball, crying silently.)
(The sun hits the room. Rayane is dressed in a sharp suit. He tosses a black credit card onto the pillow next to her head.)
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
The PIN is the year on your ID card. Take what you need. Leave the card at the front desk when you’re done
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Voice hoarse) Is that it?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Checking his watch) Our transaction is over. Don't contact me again.
(Meriem rushes to the university. She pays the bursar. She walks into the lecture hall, feeling like a ghost.)
..
..
(Laughing) Look who showed up! Did you sleep in the trash, Meriem? Your clothes are all wrinkled.
..
..
Maybe she was working a "night shift" to find the money. You look pathetic
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Looking down) Leave me alone
..
..
Big news, girls. The old Professor Mansour retired. The new one is here today. They say he’s a genius from the Algiers Surgical Center.
..
..
Here he comes! Oh my god, he’s hot!
(The door opens. Rayane Belkacem walks in. He stops at the podium. He looks directly at Meriem.)

cp

The air in the lecture hall was suffocating. Every female student in the room seemed to have forgotten how to breathe the moment Rayane Belkacem adjusted his cufflinks. He stood at the front like a dark god, his presence commandingly cold.
..
..
Oh my god, look at his shoulders. Is he a surgeon or a model? I wouldn’t mind being on his operating table.
..
..
(Giggling) Forget the table, I want to be in his office. He looks like he’s never smiled a day in his life, and that’s exactly what makes him so hot.
Meriem sat paralyzed. Her mind was a chaotic blur of the previous night. She could still feel the weight of his body, the way his heartbeat had thundered against her chest when he didn’t think she was listening. She stared at his hands—the same hands that had been so clinical and heartless hours ago were now holding a piece of chalk, drawing a perfect diagram of a human heart on the board.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Without looking back) The heart is a muscle, but in this room, it is a machine. If you treat it with emotion, you fail. If you hesitate, your patient dies.
He turned around, his icy gaze cutting through the crowd and locking onto Meriem’s pale face.
..
..
It seems some of you are already failing. Ms. Meriem
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Jumping slightly) Yes... Doctor?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
You’ve been staring at the same page for ten minutes. Is the diagram too complex, or are you still dreaming about your "night shift"?
..
..
(Whispering) Burn. He already hates her.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Stand up. Come to the front.
Meriem’s legs felt like lead as she walked down the stairs. The whispers of the other students followed her like stinging bees. She stood two feet away from him. He smelled of that same expensive sandalwood. It made her dizzy.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
We are discussing emergency resuscitation. Show the class the correct hand placement and rhythm for CPR.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Voice trembling) Here? On the floor?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Smirking darkly) I don't like the floor. Use the desk. In fact...
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(He suddenly cleared the papers off his heavy oak desk with a single sweep of his arm and lay back on it, crossing his arms over his chest. The room gasped.)
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
I’ll be your patient. Show them how you save a life, Meriem. Or are you only good at taking things?
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Biting her lip) I... I can't.
..
..
Calling out) If she’s too scared, I’ll do it, Doctor! I’ve practiced!
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Eyes fixed on Meriem) No. Meriem will do it. Or she can leave this hall and never come back. Choose.
Meriem felt the heat of a hundred jealous eyes. She stepped forward, her shadow falling over him. She climbed onto the side of the desk, leaning over his broad chest. As she placed her palms one over the other on the center of his chest, she felt the rock-hard muscle beneath his shirt. Her skin burned where they touched.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Whispering so only he could hear) Why are you doing this to me?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Low voice, barely moving his lips) Push, Meriem. Two inches deep. 100 beats per minute. Don't stop until I tell you.
She began the compressions. Every time she pushed down, she had to lean her entire body weight over him. Her face was inches from his. The students were dead silent, the air thick with a tension that felt less like a medical lesson and more like a forbidden ritual.
..
..
(Hissing) Look at her... she’s practically lying on him.
..
..
Man, it’s getting hot in here. Is the AC broken?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Gazing up at her, his eyes dark) Now... the rescue breaths. Transition to ventilation.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Freezing) We... we have masks for that.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Then use one.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Meriem reached into her medical kit with shaking fingers and pulled out a small, clear plastic breathing shield—a basic piece of emergency gear. She placed the thin film over his lips. It was a barrier, but it was transparent.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
She leaned down. Her lips pressed against the plastic, which was pressed against his mouth. She blew air into his lungs, watching his chest rise. The intimacy was shattering. To the class, it was a demonstration. To Meriem, it was a reminder of the breath he had stolen from her in the dark.

..
..
(Whistling) Best class ever.
Meriem pulled back, her face flushed crimson. She stood up quickly, nearly tripping over her own feet. Rayane sat up slowly, smoothing his tie as if nothing had happened.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Coolly) Adequate. Though your technique lacks... confidence. You may sit down.
Meriem didn't wait. She grabbed her bag and bolted. She didn't stop until she was out in the hallway, her heart hammering against her ribs.
She had to check her balance. She had to make sure the money was safe so she could pay the final administrative fees. She pulled out her phone and logged into her bank app.

Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Gasping) No. No, no, no!
She refreshed the page. The large sum Rayane had given her—the money she had traded her soul for—was gone. She checked the transaction history. A transfer had been made an hour ago to an external account. She dialed her step-mother’s number immediately.
..
..
Hello, Meriem.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Where is the money? Fatima, what did you do?!
..
..
Oh, that? I saw the notification on your tablet. I didn't know you had such wealthy "friends." I figured since I’ve raised you all these years, I deserved a little commission for my retirement.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
That was my tuition! That was everything! I’ll be expelled! Please, give it back!
..
..
It’s already spent on my new jewelry and the apartment deposit. Don't call me again unless you have more.
(The line went dead.) Meriem felt the world tilt. The stress, the lack of sleep, and the sheer trauma of the last twenty-four hours culminated in a sharp, stabbing pain in her abdomen. She gasped, dropping her phone.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Ah... hnn...
She slumped against the cold stone wall of the corridor, sliding down until she was sitting on the floor. She clutched her stomach, her face turning ashen. She felt like she was being ripped apart from the inside.
At the end of the hall, the lecture doors opened. Students began pouring out, but Meriem was hidden behind a large pillar. Then, she saw the polished black shoes. Rayane was walking toward the faculty wing, his briefcase in hand, looking untouchable.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Weakly, reaching out) Help...
He stopped. He looked down and saw her huddled on the floor, looking small and broken. His expression didn't change, but he didn't walk away.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Coldly) Get up, Meriem. This isn't the place for a breakdown.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Lunging forward, grabbing the hem of his trousers, her knuckles white) Please... Rayane... help me. It hurts... it hurts so much.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Looking at her hand on his expensive suit, then at her pale face) What happened?
She collapsed against his legs, the pain causing her to black out. Rayane stood frozen for a split second, his heartless facade flickering as he looked down at the girl who had given him everything, only to be left with nothing.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Cursing under his breath) Dammit, Meriem.

prescription

The sterile scent of the professor’s private office didn’t mask the heavy tension between them. Rayane had carried Meriem through the back corridors, his face a mask of cold professionalism, though his grip on her had been tighter than necessary.
He laid her on the leather examination sofa and began a quick, clinical assessment. His large, warm hands pressed against her abdomen, checking for internal trauma.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(His voice low and raspy) Your vitals are stable, but your stress levels are off the charts. And your physical state...
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Wincing, pulling her sweater down) I’m fine. Just give me my phone. I have to find a way to get that money back
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(Ignoring her, leaning back) You aren't fine. You’re torn, Meriem. It was your first time, and it was... too rough. You’re lucky you aren't hemorrhaging.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Snapping, her eyes flashing with sudden fire) And whose fault is that?! You didn't exactly treat me like a person last night, Rayane! You treated me like a transaction! You were heartless!
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(His jaw tightening) You agreed to the deal. You set the price.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Because I was desperate! You saw a girl drowning and you decided to charge her for the life vest.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Not for nothing. Your tuition is paid. The bank doesn't take back payments.
He turned to his desk, scribbling quickly on a prescription pad. He ripped the paper off and handed it to her.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
Take these for the pain and the inflammation. And Meriem?
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Taking the paper, her hand shaking) What?
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(A dark, dangerous smirk tugging at his lips) No "sexy time" for at least a week. You’re medically unfit for my bed until you heal.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Blushing furiously) I wasn't planning on coming back! Ever!
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
We’ll see. You still have a semester of my lectures to survive.
Meriem grabbed her bag and bolted out of the office, her face burning. Rayane stood at the window, watching her small figure disappear into the courtyard. He wasn't smiling anymore. His eyes were fixed on a group of students lingering near the fountain.
Outside the faculty building, Meriem was stopped by Amel, a classmate who always acted like her best friend but had eyes that moved too fast.
..
..
Meriem! Oh my god, I heard you were in the Professor’s office. Are you okay? You look pale.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
(Trying to hide the prescription) Just a dizzy spell, Amel. I’m fine.
..
..
Look, I heard about your money troubles. I felt so bad, I talked to my cousin. He runs a high-end lounge in the city center. He needs a hostess for a private VIP event tonight. The tips alone would cover your rent for three months.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Hope flickering in her eyes) Really? A hostess? Just serving drinks?
..
..
Exactly! It’s easy. Just wear something nice and smile. Meet me at 'The Onyx Bar' at 9:00 PM. Don't be late!
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Amel, thank you. You have no idea how much I need this.
Meriem hugged her and hurried away to the pharmacy. As soon as she was gone, a shadow stepped out from behind a pillar. It was Sami, a wealthy, arrogant student who had been obsessed with Meriem since freshman year—and whom she had rejected dozens of times.
..
..
Handing Amel a thick envelope of cash) Did she buy it?
..
..
(Counting the money) Like a hungry fish. She’ll be there at nine.
..
..
(A sickening grin spreading across his face) Good. Make sure she’s in the private room. I’m tired of her acting so innocent. Tonight, she’ll learn that everyone has a price.
Unbeknownst to them, Rayane was standing on the balcony above, his shadow stretching long over the pavement. He had seen the hand-off. He had seen the greed in Amel’s eyes.
rayane(ml)
rayane(ml)
(To himself) You’re a magnet for trouble, Meriem.
The club was a sensory assault. Red neon lights, heavy bass, and the smell of expensive tobacco. Meriem arrived in a simple black dress, feeling completely out of place. Amel met her at the door, her eyes glinting.
..
..
You look perfect! Come on, the VIPs are in the back suite. They’re asking for champagne.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Is it safe? It feels... very private back here.
..
..
(Pushing her into a dimly lit room) Totally safe! I’ll be right outside. Just wait here, I’ll go grab the tray.
The heavy soundproof door clicked shut. Meriem looked around. The room was filled with plush velvet sofas and expensive crystal, but it was empty.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Amel?
The door locked from the outside. A second later, a side door opened, and Sami walked in, loosening his tie. He looked drunk, his eyes roaming over Meriem with a terrifying hunger.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Sami? What are you doing here? Amel said—
..
..
Amel says whatever I pay her to say. You think you’re so much better than us? Rejecting me in front of the whole class?
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
I’m leaving, Sami. Open the door.
..
..
You aren't going anywhere. I know you’re struggling for money. I have more than that Professor ever will. Just be a good girl, and I’ll make sure you never have to worry about tuition again.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
Let go of me! Don't touch me
..
..
(Snarling, his hand gripping her throat lightly) Stop fighting! You’ve probably already slept with half the faculty to get those grades. Why not me?
He threw her onto the sofa, his weight crushing the breath out of her. Meriem cried out, her mind flashing back to the night with Rayane. But this wasn't a deal. This was a violation.
Meriem(fl)
Meriem(fl)
No! Please! Someone help!
..
..
Cry all you want. These walls are soundproof.
He reached for the hem of her dress, his touch oily and aggressive. Meriem’s hand flew out, searching for anything to use as a weapon. Her fingers closed around the neck of an empty glass champagne bottle sitting on the side table.
..
..
(Leaning down to kiss her) Come here—
..
..
With a scream of pure desperation) GET OFF ME!
CRACK. She swung the bottle with every ounce of strength she had left. It shattered against the side of Sami’s head. Glass sprayed across the velvet. Sami let out a choked groan, his hands flying to his temple as blood began to seep through his fingers. He fell sideways, moaning in pain and shock.
Meriem scrambled off the sofa, her chest heaving, her hands covered in his blood and shards of glass. She looked at the door, sobbing, her legs giving out. Suddenly, the lock clicked. The heavy door swung open.
