Pehli Nazar Mein—When Hearts Meet
The Wedding
The wedding ground was beautifully decorated. Aakash stood with the other guests, trying not to check his watch too obviously.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
(Whispering) At least pretend to enjoy yourself.
Aakash Singh
(Muttering) I am pretending.
Aakash's maternal cousin Aaditya was getting married. Family obligation had brought him here—three hours from Mumbai to attend ceremonies he didn't particularly care about.
Groom entered. Aakash clapped politely, his mind already on the work emails waiting in his inbox.
After sometime the bride started walking toward the stage for the jaimala.
And he saw her. A girl—mid-twenties maybe—walking beside the bride, carefully managing the heavy lehenga trail.
She moved quickly, talking to a girl and making sure the bride’s dupatta stayed in place.
Even from a distance, there was something striking about her. Not just her looks—though she was beautiful—but the focused efficiency in every movement. Like she was solving a complex problem while making it look effortless.
For a moment, their eyes met across the crowd. Just a second. Maybe less.
Then someone called her name—'Vaani!'—and she turned away, back to managing the bride.
Aakash blinked, pulling his gaze away.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
The bride's cousin.
She noticed where he had been looking.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
Vaani Chauhan. Her mother Rashmi and the bride's mother Meera are sisters.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
She's a research scientist—very accomplished. Rashmi and I became friendly during the wedding prep at the hotel this week.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
Such a lovely girl. Very intelligent, very—
She smiled but said nothing more.
The pheras began around midnight. Aakash stood with the other guests, watching the bride and groom circle the sacred fire.
His eyes kept drifting.
There—Vaani was standing with the bride's family, her dupatta now draped properly over her shoulder. She was watching her cousin get married, a soft smile on her face.
Even in the dim light, He could see her clearly.. The way she absently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. The slight tiredness around her eyes that suggested she had been managing things all day.
Aakash Singh
"Why do I keep looking at her?"
He forced his attention back to the ceremony. But five minutes later, his gaze found her again.
She was listening to something an elderly relative was saying, nodding politely.
Aakash Singh
“She seems genuinely kind.”
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
(Whispering) Beta, you're staring.
Aakash Singh
I'm watching the ceremony.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
You're watching someone else.
Aakash Singh
(Annoyed) I'm not. Can we just focus on the wedding?
Rupali's smile widened but she didn't push further.
Early Morning - The Vidai
The bride prepared to leave.
The vidai ceremony—always emotional—had the bride's mother sobbing, relatives gathering for final hugs.
Aakash stood back, tired after the long night.
Vaani was there too, eyes red as she hugged her cousin tightly. Whispering something that made the bride laugh through her tears.
Then she stepped back, letting others say goodbye, wrapping her arms around herself in the cool morning air.
He had the strangest urge to... he didn't know what. Say something? Offer comfort?
Aakash Singh
"You don't even know her."
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
Okay, let's go. Anuj is waiting.
They walked toward the parking lot. The sun was rising, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange.
Anuj Singh (Aakash's Father)
Did you enjoy the wedding?
As his father started the car, he couldn't help one last glance toward the wedding venue.
Vaani was standing near the entrance, talking with some girls..probably cousins. The morning light caught her hair, making it shine almost gold.
Then they turned the corner, and she disappeared from view.
Aakash Singh
"That's it. You'll probably never see her again."

Coming Home
Three Months Later - Mumbai
Sameer Malhotra (Aakash's Friend)
Aakash, are you listening?
Aakash blinked, looking up from his laptop. Sameer was standing in his cabin doorway, holding project files.
Sameer Malhotra (Aakash's Friend)
The meeting. Tomorrow at 10. Did you review the designs?
Aakash Singh
Yes..they're done. Send me the final deck and I'll look over it tonight.
Sameer Malhotra (Aakash's Friend)
You've been distracted a lot lately. Everything okay?
Aakash Singh
I'm fine. Just busy.
After Sameer left, Aakash leaned back in his chair, rubbing his eyes. He was distracted.
Had been for weeks.
It was stupid. Irrational. But he couldn't stop thinking about her.
A girl he had seen for maybe 1 hour total. A girl he had never even spoken to. A girl whose name he only knew because his mother had mentioned it.
He had tried to logic it away. Tried to focus on work. Tried to convince himself it was just a passing thought, meaningless.
But every few days, his mind would drift back to that moment during the pheras. The way she'd looked in the firelight. The brief second when their eyes had met across the crowd.
Aakash Singh
(Mumbling) This is ridiculous
His phone buzzed. A message from his mother.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
💬 Are you coming home this weekend? I want to discuss something with you.
Aakash Singh
💬I have work. Maybe next weekend.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
💬It's important. Please come.
He sighed. When his mother said something was important, she meant it.
Aakash Singh
💬Fine. I'll come Saturday.
Aakash came home. His mother had made all his favorite foods—always a sign she wanted something.
Aakash Singh
What's this about, Ma?
Rupali set down her chai cup, suddenly serious.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
Beta, I want to talk to you about marriage.
Aakash Singh
(Annoyed) Ma, not this again—
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
Just listen. I'm not getting any younger, and I want to see you settled before—
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
Which is exactly the right age! Aakash, you've been so focused on your career, which is wonderful, but life is more than just work.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
There's a family. Very good family. The girl is accomplished, educated, from good background. I think you should at least meet her.
Aakash Singh
I'm not interested in meeting anyone right now.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
Beta, just one meeting. If you don't like her, fine. But give it a chance.
He set down his plate, frustrated.
Aakash Singh
Who is this girl?
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
Her name is Vaani Chauhan. She's a research scientist... 26 years old. Her mother Rashmi and I became friends at Aaditya's wedding. Remember?....
Aakash Singh
What did you say her name was?
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
(Smiling) Vaani. Vaani Chauhan. She was managing all the wedding arrangements—you have seen her there. I know.
His mind went blank.
It was her.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
I have her photo (pulling out her phone) Here.
She handed him the phone. And there she was. Professional photo, probably for the biodata. Slight smile, intelligent eyes, wearing a simple white suit.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
So? What do you think?
He thought his heart was beating too fast. He thought this couldn't be coincidence.
Aakash Singh
She's...(clearing his throat) She looks nice.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
Just nice?
Aakash Singh
I mean... yes. Okay. I'll meet her.
His mother's face lit up.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
Really? You will?
Aakash Singh
One meeting, Ma. That's all I'm promising.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
One meeting is all I'm asking!
She was already texting someone—probably Rashmi.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
This is wonderful, beta! I'll arrange everything. Maybe next weekend? Both families can meet?
Aakash barely heard her. His mind was spinning. For three months, he had been telling himself to forget about a girl he had never even spoken to.
And now he was going to marry her.
Maybe.
Possibly.
Aakash Singh
"If she agrees."
And why would she agree? She didn't know him. Didn't remember him. To her, he'd be just another arranged marriage prospect.
While he...
He'd been thinking about her only..
Aakash Singh
(Muttering) This is going to be complicated.
Rupali Singh (Aakash's Mother)
What was that, beta?
Aakash Singh
Nothing. When is this meeting?
