Friends To LÖVers (Taekook)

Chapter 1

The summer morning was warm and bright. Kim Seokjin parked her car outside her sister's house~ a soft smile on her beautiful face. She looked at her son in the backseat.

Taehyung was seven years old. His brown eyes were wide with excitement. He was bouncing in his seat~ his small hands pressed against the window.

"Mom~ are we there~?" Taehyung asked~ even though he could see the house clearly.

Seokjin laughed. Her voice was like warm honey. "Yes~ baby. Now~ remember—"

"You and Papa will come back in one week~" Taehyung finished for her. "I know~ I know. Auntie will take care of me. I will be good!"

Seokjin shook her head lovingly. Her son was too smart for his own age. She looked at her husband in the passenger seat.

Kim Namjoon was a professor. His glasses were slightly crooked on his face. He had a deep dimple when he smiled. Right now~ he was checking his bag for the third time.

"Namjoon~ we are just going for a week. Not a year~" Seokjin teased.

Namjoon looked up with a guilty smile. "I wanted to make sure I didn't forget… anything." He paused. "I think I forgot my charger."

Seokjin sighed but her eyes were full of love. Their marriage was a love story from two sides. For Namjoon~ it was love at first sight. For Seokjin~ her family had arranged the meeting. But Namjoon's clumsy charm~ his caring heart~ and his deep love for his family made her fall for him completely. Now~ they were inseparable.

Seokjin leaned over and fixed his glasses. "We will buy a new charger. Now~ let's drop our son."

She turned to Taehyung. Her eyes became soft. "Tae~ baby~ come here."

Taehyung climbed to the front seat. Seokjin pulled him into her arms. She kissed his forehead.

"Be good for Auntie. Listen to her. And don't bother Jungkook too much~" she said.

Taehyung nodded. "I will be the good boy!"

Namjoon took Taehyung's small hand. His large fingers wrapped around his son's tiny ones. "Papa will miss you. Every day."

"Papa~ don't break anything at the hotel~" Taehyung said seriously.

Namjoon's dimple appeared as he laughed. "I will try."

The truth was~ Namjoon was clumsy. He broke things often. Just last week~ he broke a cup while making tea. Seokjin had scolded him~ but then kissed his cheek right after. Taehyung had seen it and made a funny face. His parents were always like that—full of love and laughter.

Seokjin got out and took Taehyung's small bag. She held his hand and walked to the front door.

The door opened before she could knock.

"JIN!" A loud~ excited voice filled the air.

Jeon Jinim stood at the door. She was Seokjin's older sister. She had the same beautiful features but was more talkative and full of energy. She pulled Seokjin into a tight hug.

"My baby sister! Come in~ come in!" Jinim said. She looked down and saw Taehyung. Her face lit up like the sun.

"Oh~ my little TaeTae!" She bent down and opened her arms. "Come to Auntie!"

Taehyung giggled—a loud~ bright sound—and ran into her arms. Jinim picked him up and spun him around.

"You are getting so big! Soon you will be taller than me!" she said.

Behind her~ inside the doorway~ stood a small boy.

Jeon Jungkook was also seven years old. He had big~ round eyes like a bunny. His black hair was soft and fell over his forehead. He was wearing a simple white t-shirt and blue shorts.

He was not smiling. He was standing very still~ looking down at his feet. His small hands were behind his back. He looked scared.

Jinim noticed and put Taehyung down. "Jungkook-ah~ say hello to your cousin."

Jungkook looked up for a split second. His eyes met Taehyung's bright curious ones. Then he looked down again. He didn't say anything.

Jinim sighed softly. "He's shy. Don't worry~ Tae. He will warm up."

But Taehyung was not worried. Taehyung was never worried. He walked straight to Jungkook with a big smile.

"Hi! I'm Taehyung! I'm your cousin! Your mom is my mom's sister! So we are family!" Taehyung said~ his words tumbling out like a waterfall.

Jungkook said nothing. He just looked at his feet.

Taehyung didn't stop. He stuck out his small hand.

"Let's be friends! I will show you my painting! I made it myself!"

Jungkook slowly looked up. He stared at Taehyung's hand. Then he looked at Taehyung's face. Taehyung was smiling so wide his eyes became crescents.

Jungkook slowly raised his hand and took Taehyung's.

Taehyung grinned and shook their hands up and down. "There! Now we are friends forever!"

Jungkook's lips twitched. It was not a smile~ but it was close.

Seokjin watched them and felt her heart swell. She turned to Jinim.

"Thank you for taking him for the week. Namjoon and I… we need some time. Just us."

Jinim waved her hand. "Don't even say thank you. Tae is my nephew. I love him like my own. You two go. Enjoy. Be romantic. Do whatever you two do.🌚😏😉."

Seokjin blushed. "Jinim!"

Jinim laughed loudly. "What~? You are married! It's okay!"

Seokjin kissed Taehyung's head one more time. "Be good~ baby. Mama and Papa will call you every night."

Taehyung hugged her tightly. "I will miss you~ Mama."

"I will miss you more~" Seokjin whispered.

Namjoon came to the door. He had finally found his charger in the glove compartment. He bent down and hugged Taehyung.

"Papa loves you~" he said softly.

"I love you too~ Papa. Don't break anything~" Taehyung said again.

Namjoon laughed and his dimple showed. "I promise to try."

He stood up and nodded at Jinim. "Thank you~ noona. We will bring something nice for you."

"Bring me a good story!" Jinim said. "Now go! Drive safe!"

Seokjin and Namjoon walked to the car. Taehyung stood at the door and waved. His parents waved back. The car drove away slowly.

Taehyung watched until the car turned the corner and disappeared.

Then he turned to Jinim. "Auntie~ can I have juice~?"

Jinim laughed. "Of course~ baby. Come inside."

Taehyung walked into the house. It was warm and smelled like bread. The living room was clean and cozy. There was a big couch and a television.

Jungkook was already inside. He was standing near the couch~ looking at the floor again.

Taehyung walked to him. He didn't understand why Jungkook was so quiet. Taehyung was never quiet.

"Jungkook! Do you want juice too~? I like apple juice. What do you like~?" Taehyung asked.

Jungkook looked at him. His bunny eyes were big and shy. He opened his mouth but no sound came out. He closed it again.

Taehyung didn't wait for an answer. He started talking.

"I have a lot of friends at school! There is Jimin—he is small but he is very strong! And there is Hoseok—he laughs very loud! And there is Yoongi—he is sleepy all the time but he is funny!"

Jungkook just blinked.

Taehyung kept going. "Yesterday~ Papa took me for ice cream at night! We went to the shop near our house. Papa dropped his ice cream on his shoe! He was so sad! Mama scolded him but then she shared her ice cream with him. They are so weird."

This time~ Jungkook's lips moved. A small sound came out. It was almost a laugh.

Taehyung's eyes lit up. "Did you laugh~? Did you~? I saw it!"

Jungkook shook his head quickly. His ears turned pink.

Jinim came back with two glasses of apple juice and a plate of snacks. She placed them on the small table.

"Here you go~ my boys. Tae~ these are your favorite crackers."

Taehyung's eyes went wide. "Auntie! You remembered!"

"Of course I remembered. I am the best auntie~" Jinim said with a wink.

She turned on the television. A cartoon was playing—colorful animals running and jumping.

"I will be in the kitchen making lunch. You two play nice~" she said.

She walked away but stopped at the door. She looked back with a soft smile.

Taehyung was sitting on the couch~ drinking his juice. Jungkook was standing a little away~ watching the cartoon.

But Taehyung kept looking at Jungkook. Every few seconds~ he would glance at him and smile.

Jungkook pretended to watch the cartoon. But his eyes kept moving to Taehyung too.

Jinim smiled to herself and went to the kitchen.

After finishing his juice~ Taehyung put the glass down. He saw Jungkook slowly moving toward the hallway.

Jungkook was walking quietly. He was going to his room. He liked his room. It was quiet. It was his space. He felt safe there.

Taehyung noticed.

"Where are you going~?" Taehyung asked loudly.

Jungkook stopped. He didn't turn around.

"…My room~" he said. His voice was very soft. Like a whisper.

Taehyung jumped off the couch. "I will come too!"

Jungkook's shoulders went up a little. He wanted to say no. He liked being alone. But he didn't know how to say it.

So he just walked faster.

Taehyung followed him. His small feet are padded behind Jungkook.

Jungkook went into his room. It was small and neat. There was a bed with blue blankets. A small desk. Some toys in the corner.

Jungkook sat on his bed. He pulled his knees to his chest. He made himself small.

Taehyung walked into the room. He looked around with big~ curious eyes.

"Your room is nice!" Taehyung said. "I like blue! My room is green! Green is my favorite color. But blue is nice too!"

Jungkook didn't say anything.

Taehyung walked closer to the bed. "Can I sit~?"

Jungkook wanted to say no. He wanted his space. He didn't like people in his room. He didn't like people touching his things.

But Taehyung was already sitting on the bed. Right next to him.

Jungkook's body went stiff.

Taehyung leaned closer. His shoulder touched Jungkook's shoulder.

"Your room is very quiet. My room is loud. Mama says I make too much noise~" Taehyung said with a giggle.

Jungkook could feel Taehyung's warmth. It was strange. It was different. But it was not… bad.

Taehyung was looking at him. His brown eyes were soft and friendly.

"Are you scared of me~?" Taehyung asked.

Jungkook shook his head.

"Then why are you so quiet~?"

Jungkook thought for a long moment. Then he said~ very softly~ "I don't… talk much."

Taehyung tilted his head. "Why~?"

Jungkook shrugged. He didn't know how to explain. Words were hard for him. They got stuck in his throat.

Taehyung smiled. "That's okay. I talk enough for both of us!"

And then he started talking again. He talked about his favorite cartoon. He talked about his Papa breaking a plate that morning. He talked about a bird that sat on his window.

Jungkook listened. He didn't say much. But he didn't move away.

Taehyung was sitting very close. His arm was touching Jungkook's arm. He was in Jungkook's personal space.

But Jungkook found that he didn't mind.

.

In the kitchen~ Jinim was chopping vegetables. She heard Taehyung's loud voice coming from Jungkook's room. She heard her son's silence.

She smiled softly.

Her son never let anyone in his room. He never let anyone sit on his bed.

But here was Taehyung~ a whirlwind of laughter and words~ sitting right next to him.

And Jungkook was letting him.

Jinim looked out the window. The sun was high now. The day was beautiful.

She thought about her son. He was so quiet~ so shy. He loved his personal space. He loved being alone. He got that from his father.

Jeon Jeun~ her husband. He owned a small cafe in the city. He worked hard. He provided for the family. But he didn't show his love much. He was quiet~ like Jungkook. He cared deeply but his words were few.

Jungkook was exactly like him.

Jinim was the opposite. She was talkative. She was warm. She showed her love loudly.

And Taehyung—Taehyung was like her. Loud and loving and full of light.

Maybe that was why Jungkook didn't push him away. Maybe he needed someone like Taehyung.

Jinim wiped her hands and walked quietly to Jungkook's door. She looked inside.

Taehyung was lying on the bed now~ his legs kicking in the air. He was telling a long story about his friend Jimin.

"And Jimin said he can lift a rock! A big rock! But the rock was actually small! It was so funny!"

Jungkook was still sitting with his knees to his chest. But he was looking at Taehyung now. His big eyes were focused. His lips were parted slightly.

And then it happened.

Jungkook smiled.

It was small. It was shy. It was barely there.

But it was a smile.

Taehyung saw it and stopped talking. His eyes went wide.

"You smiled!" Taehyung shouted. "I saw it! You have a bunny smile! Like a bunny!"

Jungkook's face turned red. He tried to hide his face behind his knees.

But Taehyung was laughing. A loud~ happy laugh.

"Don't hide! It's pretty! Your smile is pretty~ Jungkook!"

Jungkook peeked from behind his knees. His ears were bright red.

Taehyung grinned and patted Jungkook's head.

"We are going to be best friends~" Taehyung declared. "I decided."

Jungkook didn't say anything. But he didn't say no.

From the doorway~ Jinim watched her son. His ears were red. His face was half-hidden. But he wasn't pushing Taehyung away.

In fact~ he was leaning closer. Just a little.

Jinim's heart filled with warmth.

She stepped away quietly~ leaving the door open.

In the room~ Taehyung had started another story. His voice was loud and happy. He was lying on his stomach~ his legs swinging.

Jungkook was still sitting. But his body had relaxed. His knees were no longer pressed to his chest. He was leaning back on his hands.

He was looking at Taehyung. Listening.

For the first time~ his quiet room didn't feel empty.

It felt full.

It felt like something new was beginning.

chapter 2

The morning sun filled Jungkook's room with soft yellow light. Taehyung was still sleeping on the bed~ his mouth open~ his hair was messy like a bird's nest.

Jungkook was already awake. He was sitting on the edge of the bed~ watching Taehyung with curious eyes.

He had never shared his room with anyone. He had never let anyone sleep in his bed. But last night~ Taehyung had just fallen asleep right there~ talking about his friends until his eyes closed.

Jungkook had stayed awake for a long time~ watching the rise and fall of Taehyung's chest. It was strange to have someone in his space. But the room didn't feel small. It felt… warm.

Now~ Taehyung's eyes flutter open. He blinked at the ceiling. Then he turned his head and saw Jungkook.

A big smile spread across his face.

"Good morning~ Kookie!"

Jungkook's ears turned pink. "Don't call me that."

"Kookie!" Taehyung said again~ just to be playful. He sat up and stretched his arms wide. "What's for breakfast~? I'm hungry! Auntie makes the best pancakes! Does she make pancakes~? I love pancakes! With syrup! And strawberries! Do you have strawberries~?"

Jungkook blinked. It was seven in the morning. Taehyung was already a storm of words.

"My mom makes pancakes~" Jungkook said quietly.

"YES!" Taehyung jumped off the bed and ran out of the room.

Jungkook sat there for a moment. Then he slowly got up and followed.

---

The kitchen was warm and smelled like butter. Jinim was standing at the stove~ flipping pancakes. She was wearing a pink apron and humming a song.

Taehyung ran to her and hugged her legs.

"Auntie! Kookie said you are making pancakes! I love pancakes!"

Jinim laughed. "I know~ baby. Sit down. They are almost ready."

Taehyung climbed onto a chair. He looked at the table. There was syrup~ strawberries~ and whipped cream. His eyes went wide.

"This looks like a birthday party!" he said.

Jinim placed a tall stack of pancakes in front of him. Taehyung's jaw dropped.

"You are the best auntie in the whole world!" he declared.

Jinim kissed his head. "Eat well~ my love."

Jungkook sat down across from Taehyung. He took one pancake and ate it quietly. He liked his pancakes plain. No syrup. No strawberries.

Taehyung watched him with confusion.

"Why are you not putting syrup~? Syrup is the best part!"

Jungkook shook his head.

Taehyung picked up the syrup bottle. "Here~ let me—"

"No~" Jungkook said quickly~ pulling his plate away.

Taehyung pouted. "But it tastes better with syrup!"

"I like it without."

Taehyung stared at him for a moment. Then he shrugged. "Okay! More syrup for me!"

He poured a huge amount of syrup on his pancakes. Then he added strawberries. Then whipped cream. Then more syrup.

Jinim watched and laughed. "Tae~ that's enough sugar for a week!"

Taehyung took a big bite. His cheeks puffed out like a squirrel.

"It's perfect!" he said with his mouth full.

Jungkook watched him eat. Taehyung was messy. Syrup was on his chin. Whipped cream was on his nose.

Jungkook's lips twitched. He wanted to laugh but he held it in.

---

After breakfast~ Taehyung was full of energy. He ran around the living room~ jumping on the couch.

"Let's play outside!" Taehyung shouted. "Let's run! Let's catch bugs! Let's climb trees!"

Jungkook was sitting on the floor~ reading a picture book. He looked up with wide eyes.

"I don't want to play outside."

Taehyung stopped jumping. He looked at Jungkook like he had said something crazy.

"Why not~? Outside is fun! The sun is out! The birds are singing!"

"I like it inside~" Jungkook said quietly. "It's quiet."

Taehyung walked to him and took the book from his hands. He closed it and put it on the table.

Jungkook stared at his empty hands. His mouth opened but no words came out.

"Come on!" Taehyung grabbed Jungkook's hand and pulled him up. "We are going outside!"

Jungkook wanted to say no. He wanted to pull his hand back. He wanted to go to his room and close the door.

But Taehyung's hand was warm. And his grip was firm. And his smile was so bright.

Jungkook let himself be dragged outside.

---

The backyard was small but green. There was a big tree in the corner and a small garden with flowers.

Taehyung let go of Jungkook's hand and ran in circles.

"Look! A tree! Can we climb it~?"

"No~" Jungkook said quickly. "My mom will get angry."

Taehyung stopped running. He looked around. His eyes landed on the garden.

"Flowers! Let's pick flowers for Auntie!"

Jungkook shook his head. "Those are my mom's flowers. She will be sad if we pick them."

Taehyung pouted. "Then what can we do~?"

He thought for a moment. Then his face lit up.

"Let's play tag! You run and I will catch you!"

Jungkook took a step back. "I don't want to run."

Taehyung grinned. "Then I will catch you without running!"

He walked toward Jungkook slowly. His hands were out like a monster.

Jungkook took another step back. Then another.

Taehyung walked faster. Jungkook stepped back faster.

"You can't catch me!" Jungkook said. His voice was louder now. There was a small smile on his face.

Taehyung's eyes sparkled. "Oh~ I can't~? Watch me!"

He lunged forward. Jungkook squeaked and turned around. He started running.

Taehyung chased him around the yard. Jungkook was fast but Taehyung was faster.

"You run funny!" Taehyung laughed. "Like a bunny! A running bunny!"

Jungkook tried to run faster but his feet got tangled. He stumbled and fell on the grass.

Taehyung fell on top of him~ laughing.

"I caught you! I caught the bunny!"

Jungkook was breathing hard. His face was red. But he was laughing too. A small~ shy laugh that escaped his lips.

Taehyung heard it and stopped. He looked down at Jungkook with wonder.

"You laughed! Bunny!"

Jungkook's face turned redder. He pushed Taehyung off and sat up.

"No~ I didn't."

"Yes~ you did! I heard it!" Taehyung sat up too~ his eyes shining. "Your laugh is like a bunny too! A happy bunny!"

Jungkook looked away. But he couldn't hide the smile on his face.

For the rest of the morning~ they played outside. Taehyung showed Jungkook how to do a cartwheel. Jungkook showed Taehyung how to balance on one foot. They chased butterflies. They made a fort with sticks.

Jungkook was tired. His legs hurt. His face was sweaty.

But he was smiling.

---

The afternoon passed quickly. Taehyung talked nonstop. Jungkook listened and smiled.

By evening~ Taehyung was getting tired. He sat on the couch~ leaning against Jungkook. His eyes were half-closed.

"When is Uncle coming home~?" Taehyung asked sleepily.

Jungkook's body went a little stiff. "He comes home at dinner time."

"What is Uncle like~?"

Jungkook was quiet for a moment. "He is… quiet. Like me."

Taehyung nodded like he understood. "My Papa is loud. But Papa is clumsy. He breaks things. Mama says he has destroy king tag!"

Jungkook didn't know what that meant but he nodded anyway.

---

The front door opened at 7 PM.

Jeon Jeun walked in. He was tall~ with broad shoulders and a calm face. He was wearing a simple shirt and pants from working at his cafe. His face was tired but his eyes were kind.

He saw Taehyung first.

The small boy was sitting on the couch~ his legs swinging. When he saw Mr. Jeon~ his whole face lit up.

"Uncle!"

Taehyung jumped off the couch and ran to him. Mr. Jeon froze for a moment. He was not used to such excitement.

In his hands~ he was carrying a small box and a bag. He had stopped at the cafe and brought some cakes and sweets for the boys.

Taehyung looked at the box with wide eyes. "What is that~? Is it for me~?"

Mr. Jeon blinked. Then a small smile appeared on his face. "Yes. For you and Jungkook."

He handed the box to Taehyung. Taehyung opened it carefully.

Inside were small cakes with cream and strawberries. There were also cookies shaped like animals.

Taehyung's mouth fell open. His eyes became wet with happiness.

"For me~?" he whispered.

Mr. Jeon nodded. "From the cafe. I thought you might like them."

Taehyung dropped the box on the couch and ran back to Mr. Jeon. He jumped up and wrapped his small arms around Mr. Jeon's legs.

"Thank you~ Uncle! Thank you! Thank you!"

Mr. Jeon's body went completely still.

He was not used to hugs. Jungkook never hugged him like this. Jungkook was shy~ like him. They showed love with silence~ not with touch.

But this small boy—this loud~ bright~ happy boy—was hugging him like he was the best person in the world.

Mr. Jeon slowly raised his hand. He patted Taehyung's head. It was awkward. But his eyes were soft.

"You are welcome~" he said quietly.

From the hallway~ Jungkook was watching.

He had come out when he heard his father's voice. He was standing in the doorway~ his hands at his sides.

He saw his father pat Taehyung's head. He saw the small smile on his father's face. A smile that Jungkook rarely saw.

Something hot rose in Jungkook's chest. His stomach twisted.

His father was looking at Taehyung. Paying attention to Taehyung. Smiling at Taehyung.

Taehyung was getting the hug that Jungkook never gave. The smile that Jungkook never asked for.

Jungkook's hands curled into fists.

He didn't understand the feeling. It was too big for his small heart. It was hot and sharp and painful.

It was jealousy.

He looked at Taehyung—Taehyung who was still holding his father's leg~ giggling about the cookies—and something changed in his eyes.

He turned around and walked back to his room. He closed the door. Not loudly. Just a soft click.

But it felt like a wall.

---

Dinner was served at 8 PM. Jinim had made a big meal—soup~ rice~ and grilled fish.

Taehyung sat next to Mr. Jeon. He was still talking about the cakes.

"The strawberry one was my favorite! But the cookie was a bear! A bear cookie! Have you ever seen a bear cookie~ Uncle~?"

Mr. Jeon nodded slowly. "I make them at the cafe."

"You make them~? You can make cookies~? You are like a magician!"

Mr. Jeon's ears turned red. He was not used to compliments. He looked down at his plate.

Jungkook sat across from them. He was not talking. He was pushing his rice with his chopsticks. His face was blank.

Jinim noticed. "Jungkook-ah~ are you not hungry~?"

Jungkook shrugged.

Taehyung looked at him. "Kookie~ you should eat! The fish is so good! Auntie is the best cook!"

Jungkook's jaw tightened. He didn't look at Taehyung.

Taehyung didn't notice. He turned back to Mr. Jeon.

"Uncle~ do you have a big oven~? At your cafe~? Can I see it one day~? I want to see where the bear cookies are born!"

Mr. Jeon let out a small laugh. It was a rare sound.

Jinim's eyes went wide. She looked at her husband. He was laughing. Actually laughing.

Taehyung was making her quiet husband laugh.

Jungkook saw it too. His chest burned again.

He put his chopsticks down. "I'm full~" he said.

Jinim frowned. "You barely ate."

"I'm not hungry." Jungkook got up from the table. He walked to his room without looking back.

Jinim looked at Taehyung. Taehyung looked confused.

"Is Kookie okay~?" he asked.

Jinim smiled softly. "He's just tired. It's been a big day. Don't worry."

But Taehyung was worried. His eyes followed Jungkook down the hallway.

---

Later that night~ Jinim prepared a room for Taehyung. It was a small guest room with a soft bed and yellow blankets.

She tucked Taehyung in. "Do you want me to stay with you~? Are you scared~?"

Taehyung looked at the dark corners of the room. The shadows on the ceiling looked like monsters. His heart was beating fast.

But he was a big boy. He was seven years old. Big boys are not scared.

"I'm not scared~ Auntie~" he said with a brave face. "I'm a big boy now."

Jinim kissed his forehead. "You are very brave. Good night~ my love."

She turned off the light and closed the door.

The room became dark. Very dark.

Taehyung pulled the blanket up to his chin. His eyes were wide open.

The wind outside made the tree branches scratch against the window. Something creaked in the hallway.

Taehyung's lip started to tremble.

He closed his eyes. But the darkness was behind his eyes too.

He thought of his Papa's warm hugs. He thought of his Mama's soft voice. He thought of the night light in his room at home.

A tear rolled down his cheek.

He was scared.

He waited for ten minutes. Then twenty. The fear did not go away.

Finally~ he pushed the blanket off. He slipped out of bed. His feet were cold on the floor.

He walked to the door. He opened it quietly. The hallway was dark but there was a small light from the kitchen.

He walked to Jungkook's room. His heart was pounding.

He knocked softly.

No answer.

He knocked again. A little louder.

The door opened.

Jungkook stood there. His face was not soft anymore. His eyebrows were pulled together. His lips were pressed in a thin line. He looked like an angry bunny.

"What~?" he said. His voice was cold.

Taehyung's lip trembled. "Kookie… I can't sleep."

Jungkook stared at him. "So~?"

Taehyung looked down at his feet. "I'm scared."

The anger on Jungkook's face flickered. But he didn't soften.

"Go back to your room~" he said.

Taehyung shook his head. "Please. Please let me sleep with you. Please~ Kookie."

Jungkook's jaw tightened. "I want to be alone."

Taehyung looked up. His eyes were wet. His cheeks were pink. He looked small and scared.

"Please~" he whispered. "I won't make noise. I promise. I just… I don't want to be alone."

Jungkook stared at him. The jealousy from dinner was still burning in his chest. He wanted to push Taehyung away. He wanted to close the door.

But Taehyung was crying.

Small tears were falling down his cheeks. He was trying to be brave but he was failing.

Jungkook's heart twisted. The anger in his chest mixed with something else. Something softer.

He stepped aside.

"Fine. Come in."

Taehyung's face lit up. He quickly walked into the room.

"But don't touch me~" Jungkook said firmly. "You stay on your side. Don't come near me."

Taehyung nodded quickly. "I promise. I won't touch you."

He climbed onto the bed and lay on the very edge. He was so far that he was almost falling off.

Jungkook climbed onto his side. He lay down and turned his back to Taehyung.

The room was quiet.

Taehyung was quiet too. He kept his promise. He didn't move. He didn't make a sound.

But Jungkook couldn't sleep.

He lay in the dark~ staring at the wall. His mind was full of messy feelings.

He was jealous. He knew that. He was jealous that Taehyung hugged his father. He was jealous that his father smiled at Taehyung.

But right now~ Taehyung was in his bed. He was scared. He needed Jungkook.

And Jungkook had let him in.

Why~?

He thought about it. He was jealous of Taehyung. But he was also… something else.

He was jealous of his father~? Because his father got Taehyung's hug~? Or was he jealous of Taehyung because his father smiled at him~?

He didn't know. The feelings were too tangled.

He heard a small sniff from behind him.

Taehyung was still crying. Quietly. He was trying to hide it.

Jungkook closed his eyes. His chest felt tight.

He didn't turn around. He didn't say anything.

But he moved his hand back. Just a little. His fingers touched Taehyung's fingers.

Taehyung stopped crying. He held Jungkook's finger.

Just one finger.

They stayed like that. Not talking. Not looking at each other. Just holding one finger in the dark.

Jungkook felt the jealousy slowly fade. It was replaced by something warm. Something confusing. Something that made his heart beat faster.

He didn't know what Taehyung was to him. A cousin~? A friend~? A rival~?

But lying there~ holding Taehyung's finger in the dark~ he knew one thing.

He didn't want Taehyung to leave.

His eyes grew heavy. The warmth of Taehyung's hand spread through him.

He fell asleep~ still holding on......

chapter 3

The morning sun slipped through the curtains~ painting soft gold lines on the bed.

Jungkook opened his eyes first.

He was lying on his side. His hand was still stretched out. His fingers were still touching Taehyung's.

Taehyung was asleep. His face was peaceful. His lips were slightly open. A small line of dried tears was still on his cheek from last night.

Jungkook looked at their hands. His finger was wrapped around Taehyung's finger. Just like last night.

His ears turned pink.

He pulled his hand back slowly~ carefully. He didn't want to wake Taehyung.

He sat up and looked at the small boy in his bed. Taehyung's hair was a mess. His pajama shirt was twisted. He looked nothing like the loud~ bright boy from yesterday.

He looked small. Soft. Human.

Jungkook got out of bed quietly. He went to the bathroom and washed his face. He brushed his teeth. He combed his hair.

Then he stood in the bathroom doorway~ looking at Taehyung.

He thought about last night. The jealousy. The anger. The way his chest burned when Taehyung hugged his father.

But then he thought about Taehyung crying. The small~ scared boy knocking on his door. The way Taehyung held his finger in the dark.

The jealousy was still there~ somewhere deep. But this morning~ it felt smaller. Lighter.

Jungkook walked back to the bed. He poked Taehyung's shoulder.

"Wake up."

Taehyung didn't move.

Jungkook poked him again. Harder. "Taehyung. Wake up."

Taehyung groaned and rolled over. His eyes were still closed. "Five more minutes~ Mama…"

Jungkook frowned. "I'm not your mama. Wake up. We have to eat breakfast."

Taehyung's eyes opened slowly. He blinked at Jungkook. Then a sleepy smile spread across his face.

"Kookie~" he whispered. His voice was soft and sleepy.

Jungkook's ears turned red again. "Come on. You need to wash your face. Your face is dirty."

Taehyung touched his cheek. He felt the dried tears. His smile faded a little.

Then he sat up and looked at Jungkook with big~ grateful eyes.

"You let me sleep with you~" Taehyung said softly. "Thank you~ Kookie."

Jungkook looked away. "Whatever. Come. I'll show you where the bathroom is."

He walked to the bathroom. Taehyung followed him like a small duckling.

Jungkook showed him the toothbrush. He put toothpaste on it. He handed it to Taehyung.

"Brush your teeth~" he said.

Taehyung took the toothbrush. He looked at it. Then he looked at Jungkook.

"You are helping me~" Taehyung said with wonder. "Like a big boy."

Jungkook's face went red. "Just brush your teeth."

Taehyung giggled and started brushing. He made funny faces in the mirror. Jungkook watched him and tried not to smile.

After brushing~ Jungkook wet a towel and handed it to Taehyung.

"Wash your face."

Taehyung took the towel and wiped his face. He missed a spot on his nose.

Jungkook sighed. He took the towel and wiped Taehyung's nose himself.

Taehyung stood very still. His eyes were soft.

"You are nice~ Kookie~" he said quietly. "Even when you pretend not to be."

Jungkook threw the towel in the sink. "Let's go. I'm hungry."

He walked out of the bathroom quickly. Taehyung followed~ giggling.

---

The kitchen smelled like eggs and toast. Jinim was at the stove~ humming her morning song.

She turned when the boys walked in. Her face lit up.

"Good morning~ my babies! Did you sleep well~?"

Taehyung ran to her and hugged her waist. "Yes~ Auntie! I slept with Kookie! He let me stay in his room!"

Jinim looked at Jungkook with surprise. Jungkook looked away~ his face red.

"Oh~?" Jinim said softly. "That was very kind of you~ Jungkook-ah."

Jungkook shrugged. "He was crying."

Taehyung's cheeks turned pink. "I was not crying! I was just… my eyes were wet."

Jinim laughed. "Sit down~ both of you. Breakfast is ready."

They sat at the table. Mr. Jeon was already there~ reading the newspaper. He looked up when the boys sat down.

His eyes moved to Taehyung. A small smile appeared on his face.

"Good morning~" he said quietly.

Taehyung beamed. "Good morning~ Uncle! Did you sleep well~? Did you dream about bear cookies~?"

Mr. Jeon blinked. Then he let out a small laugh. "No bear cookies. But I slept fine."

Jinim placed plates of eggs~ toast~ and fruit on the table. Taehyung's eyes went wide.

"This looks so good! Auntie~ you are a cooking master!"

Jinim laughed and kissed his head. "Eat well."

Jungkook ate his breakfast quietly. He watched Taehyung talk to his father. He waited for the jealousy to come back. The hot~ sharp feeling from last night.

But it didn't come.

He watched Taehyung make his father laugh. He watched his father's rare smile. And instead of feeling angry~ he felt… something else.

Taehyung was making his father happy. His father didn't smile much. But with Taehyung~ he was smiling.

And Taehyung was happy. His eyes were bright. His laugh was loud. He was like sunshine filling the quiet house.

Jungkook took a bite of his toast. He looked at Taehyung.

For the first time~ he wasn't jealous.

He was just… happy.

---

After breakfast~ Jinim clapped her hands.

"Boys! Today we are going out!"

Taehyung stopped mid-bite. His eyes became as big as saucers.

"OUT~? Where~? When~? Now~?"

Jinim laughed. "Yes~ now. We are going to the mall. Then we are going to Papa's cafe. And then—" she paused for drama~ "—we are going to the amusement park!"

Taehyung screamed.

He jumped off his chair and ran in circles around the kitchen.

"AMUSEMENT PARK! AMUSEMENT PARK! AMUSEMENT PARK!"

Jungkook covered his ears. But he was smiling.

Taehyung ran to Mr. Jeon. He grabbed his hand and shook it.

"Uncle! Did you hear~? Amusement park! Are you coming too~? Please say yes! Please please please!"

Mr. Jeon looked at the small boy shaking his hand. His heart felt strangely warm.

"Yes. I'm coming."

Taehyung jumped up and down. "This is the best day! The best day ever!"

Jinim watched her son. Jungkook was sitting at the table~ watching Taehyung with a small smile. His eyes were soft. He was not hiding.

Jinim's heart swelled.

She looked at her husband. Mr. Jeon was watching the boys too. His face was calm~ but his eyes were gentle.

He caught Jinim's eyes and nodded. A small~ quiet nod.

Jinim smiled. Today was going to be a good day.

---

The car ride was loud.

Taehyung sat in the back seat~ his face pressed against the window. He pointed at everything.

"A dog! Look~ Kookie~ a dog! Oh~ a red car! My Papa's car is black! Black is boring! Red is better! Oh~ look! A bird! A big bird! Is it an eagle~? Kookie~ is that an eagle~?"

Jungkook sat next to him~ his hands in his lap. He was quiet. But he was looking at everything Taehyung pointed at.

"I don't think it's an eagle~" Jungkook said quietly.

Taehyung turned to him with wide eyes. "What is it then~?"

Jungkook looked out the window. "I think it's just a pigeon."

Taehyung stared at the bird. Then he laughed loudly.

"A pigeon! A big~ fat pigeon! It looked like an eagle from far! I'm so silly!"

Jungkook's lips curved up. "Yes. You are silly."

Taehyung grinned and leaned against Jungkook's shoulder. Jungkook didn't push him away.

In the front seat~ Jinim watched them in the rearview mirror. She nudged her husband.

Mr. Jeon glanced in the mirror. He saw his son—his quiet~ shy son—sitting with a small boy leaning on him. Jungkook's face was relaxed. He looked… content.

Mr. Jeon's eyes softened. He said nothing. But he drove a little slower~ wanting the ride to last longer.

---

The mall was big and bright. There were people everywhere. Shops with colorful windows. Music playing from speakers.

Taehyung held Jinim's hand and pulled her toward a toy shop.

"Auntie! Auntie! Look! Toys!"

Jinim laughed and let herself be pulled. Mr. Jeon walked behind with Jungkook.

Inside the toy shop~ Taehyung ran from shelf to shelf. His eyes couldn't look at everything fast enough.

"Dolls! Cars! Puzzles! Oh~ Kookie~ look at this!"

He picked up a stuffed tiger. He hugged it. Then he put it down and picked up a stuffed giraffe.

"Too long neck!" he said~ putting it down.

He moved to the next shelf. And then he stopped.

His hands reached out slowly. He picked up two toys.

One was a brown teddy bear with a red bow. The other was a white bunny with long floppy ears.

Taehyung held both of them. His face was full of wonder.

"Auntie~" he said softly. "Look. A bear and a bunny."

Jinim knelt beside him. "They are very cute."

Taehyung looked at the bear. Then at the bunny. Then at Jungkook.

"Kookie is a bunny~" he said seriously. "And I am a bear. A teddy bear! Because my cheeks are big! See~?"

He puffed out his cheeks. Jinim laughed so hard she almost fell over.

Jungkook's face turned red. "I'm not a bunny."

"Yes~ you are!" Taehyung said. "You have bunny teeth! And bunny eyes! And you are quiet like a bunny! So you are a bunny!"

He held out the white bunny to Jungkook. "This is you!"

Then he held the brown bear to his chest. "And this is me! We match!"

Jinim watched with a soft smile. She looked at her husband.

Mr. Jeon was watching the boys. His face was calm but his eyes were warm.

Jinim walked to the shelf and picked up both toys. "We are buying these~" she said.

Taehyung's mouth fell open. "For us~? Really~?"

"Really~" Jinim said. She handed the bunny to Jungkook and the bear to Taehyung.

Taehyung hugged the bear so tight its head looked like it might pop off.

"Thank you~ Auntie! Thank you! I will keep it forever! Forever and ever!"

Then he looked down at the bear. His smile faded a little. He looked up at Jinim with a small pout.

"Auntie… I want to give you a gift too."

Jinim's heart melted. "Oh~ baby…"

"But I don't have money~" Taehyung said~ his voice sad. "I want to buy you something pretty. But I can't."

Jinim knelt down and cupped his face. Her eyes were wet.

"Tae~ my love. When you grow up~ you will have money. And then you can buy me the prettiest gift in the whole world. Okay~?"

Taehyung's eyes lit up. "Okay! I will buy you a big gift! The biggest! With flowers! And chocolates! And a card! A big card!"

Jinim kissed his forehead. "I will wait for that day."

Taehyung giggled and hugged her neck.

Jungkook stood behind them~ holding his bunny. He watched Taehyung hug his mother. And for some reason~ his chest felt warm instead of jealous.

---

They walked through the mall together. Mr. Jeon and Jinim walked ahead~ holding hands sometimes. They didn't talk much. But they didn't need to. Their love was quiet~ like everything in their family.

Behind them~ Taehyung and Jungkook walked side by side.

Taehyung was holding his teddy bear in one hand. With his other hand~ he held Jungkook's hand.

Jungkook didn't pull away.

They walked like that—two small boys~ one loud and one quiet~ holding hands through the busy mall.

Taehyung pointed at things. He asked questions. He made silly jokes.

Jungkook didn't say much. But he smiled. A lot.

And for once~ he didn't care if anyone saw.

---

The cafe was small and cozy. It was called "Jeon's Coffee." There were wooden tables and soft chairs. The walls were decorated with pictures of coffee cups and cookies.

Mr. Jeon opened the door. The smell of coffee and fresh bread filled the air.

Taehyung took a deep breath. "It smells like heaven!" he announced.

The lady at the counter smiled. "Boss~ is this your son~?"

Mr. Jeon looked at Taehyung. "Nephew. My sister-in-law's son."

Taehyung waved at the lady. "Hello! I'm Taehyung! I'm here to see where the bear cookies are born!"

The lady laughed. She pointed to the kitchen. "Right through there. Your uncle makes them himself."

Taehyung looked at Mr. Jeon with stars in his eyes. "Uncle~ can I see~? Please~?"

Mr. Jeon looked at Jinim. Jinim nodded.

Mr. Jeon took Taehyung's hand. "Come."

He led Taehyung to the kitchen. Jungkook followed quietly.

Inside the kitchen~ there was a big oven. There were trays of cookies cooling on the counter. And there—right in the middle—was a tray of bear cookies.

Taehyung gasped. "BEAR COOKIES!"

He ran to the tray. His face was inches away from the cookies. His breath fogged the air.

"They are so cute! How can I eat them~? They are too cute!"

Mr. Jeon picked one up. He handed it to Taehyung.

"You can eat them. I will make more."

Taehyung took the cookie carefully. He looked at it for a long moment. Then he took a small bite.

His eyes closed. His whole body relaxed.

"It's the best cookie I ever ate~" he whispered. "Uncle~ you are a genius."

Mr. Jeon's ears turned red. He looked away. But he was smiling.

He picked up another bear cookie and handed it to Jungkook.

Jungkook took it quietly. He looked at his father. Their eyes met.

Mr. Jeon nodded. Just once.

Jungkook nodded back.

It was small. It was quiet. But it was something.

---

The amusement park was colorful and loud. There were rides spinning in the air. There was music playing. Children were laughing and running.

Taehyung stopped at the entrance. His mouth was open. His eyes were so wide they looked like they might fall out.

"Kookie~" he whispered. "Is this Real~?"

Jungkook looked at the spinning rides. The loud noises. The crowds of people.

His first thought was: too loud. Too many people. Too much.

Then he looked at Taehyung.

Taehyung was glowing. His whole body was vibrating with excitement.

And Jungkook thought: okay. For him. I will do it for him.

They rode the merry-go-round first. Taehyung picked a white horse. Jungkook picked a brown one next to him.

Taehyung waved his hands in the air. "Look~ Kookie! I'm flying!"

Jungkook held onto his horse tightly. But he was smiling.

They rode the bumper cars next. Taehyung crashed into everyone. Jungkook tried to avoid everyone.

Taehyung laughed so hard he almost fell out of his car.

Then Taehyung saw it.

The big swing ride. It went high up in the air. It spun around in a giant circle.

Taehyung's face went pale.

"Let's do that one!" he said~ pointing at it. But his voice was shaking.

Jungkook looked at the ride. It went very high. Very fast.

"You're scared~" Jungkook said.

Taehyung straightened his back. "I'm not scared! I'm a big boy! Big boys are not scared!"

He marched toward the ride. Jungkook followed.

They sat in the swing seats. The ride started moving. Slowly at first. Then faster. Then higher.

Taehyung's eyes went wide. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the chains.

"KOOOOKIEEE!" he screamed as the swing went up.

The ride went higher. The wind blew Taehyung's hair back. His face was a mix of terror and thrill.

"IT'S TOO HIGH! I'M GOING TO DIE!"

Jungkook was on the swing next to him. He was scared too. His heart was pounding. But when he heard Taehyung scream~ he started laughing.

He couldn't help it. Taehyung's face was so funny. His eyes were squeezed shut. His mouth was wide open. His cheeks were blowing in the wind.

Jungkook laughed. A real laugh. Loud and free.

The ride went up again. Taehyung screamed again. Jungkook laughed again.

When the ride finally stopped~ Taehyung stumbled off. His legs were like jelly. He almost fell.

Jungkook caught him.

Taehyung grabbed Jungkook and hugged him tight. His face was buried in Jungkook's shoulder.

"I was so scared~" Taehyung whispered. His voice was shaking.

Jungkook patted his back. "I know."

"But you were laughing~" Taehyung said~ pulling back. His eyes were wet. "You were laughing at me!"

Jungkook's face turned red. "I wasn't laughing at you. I was laughing… because you were funny."

Taehyung stared at him. Then his face broke into a big smile.

"You laughed~ Kookie! A real laugh! I heard it!"

Jungkook looked away. "Whatever."

But Taehyung was already running toward Jinim and Mr. Jeon.

"Auntie! Uncle! Kookie laughed! A big laugh! I heard it!"

Jinim looked at her son. Jungkook was walking behind Taehyung. His ears were red. His face was shy. But he was smiling.

Jinim's eyes filled with tears. She looked at her husband.

Mr. Jeon was watching his son. His face was calm. But his eyes were shining.

They had never heard Jungkook laugh like that. Ever.

Mr. Jeon put his arm around Jinim's shoulders. She leaned into him.

Their son was laughing. Their quiet~ shy boy was laughing.

And it was because of a small boy with big cheeks and a loud laugh.

---

At a small shop~ there was a stand selling ribbons and headbands.

Taehyung ran to it. His eyes landed on a kitten headband with pink ears.

"Kookie! Look! Kitten ears!"

He put the headband on. He made a claw with his hands. "Meow!"

Jinim laughed. "You look adorable~ Tae!"

Taehyung looked at the stand again. He picked up a bunny headband with white ears.

He walked to Jungkook. "Put this on."

Jungkook stepped back. "No."

"Please~ Kookie! Please! I'm wearing kitten! You wear bunny! We match!"

Jungkook shook his head. "No."

Taehyung's face fell. His bottom lip pushed out. His eyes became big and sad.

"Please~?" he whispered.

Jungkook looked at the headband. He looked at Taehyung's sad face. He sighed.

"Fine."

Taehyung's face lit up. He carefully placed the bunny headband on Jungkook's head.

Jungkook stood there. His face was red. His ears were pink. He looked like the grumpiest bunny in the world.

Taehyung grabbed Jinim's phone from her hand.

"We take a selfie!" he announced.

He stood next to Jungkook. He held up the kitten claws. He smiled his biggest smile.

Jungkook stood stiffly. His face was red. But he didn't take the headband off.

Click.

Taehyung looked at the photo. His eyes went soft.

"Look~ Kookie. A kitten and a bunny. Best friends forever."

Jungkook looked at the photo. Taehyung was smiling bright. He was making a silly face. Jungkook was standing next to him~ shy and red.

They looked happy.

Jungkook saved the photo in his heart. He didn't say anything. But he kept the headband on for the rest of the day.

---

They rode more rides. They ate cotton candy. They played games and won small prizes.

Taehyung dragged Jungkook to the big slide. The tall~ twisty slide that went down in circles.

They climbed up together. At the top~ Taehyung looked down and his face went pale again.

"It's so high~" he whispered.

Jungkook looked at him. "Do you want to go down together~?"

Taehyung nodded quickly.

They sat down. Jungkook sat behind Taehyung. He wrapped his arms around Taehyung's waist.

"Hold on~" Jungkook said.

They pushed off.

The slide was fast. The wind whipped their hair. Taehyung screamed. Jungkook held him tight.

At the bottom~ they crashed into the pile of cushions. Taehyung was laughing so hard he couldn't breathe.

"Again! Again!" he shouted.

They went up again. And again. And again.

Each time~ Jungkook held Taehyung. Each time~ Taehyung screamed. Each time~ they laughed.

By the end~ they were tired. Their legs hurt. Their throats were sore from screaming and laughing.

They sat on a bench~ leaning against each other. Taehyung's head was on Jungkook's shoulder. Jungkook's head was on Taehyung's.

The sun was setting. The sky was pink and orange.

Taehyung looked up at the sky. "Kookie."

"Yeah~?"

"This is the best day ever."

Jungkook was quiet for a moment. Then he said~ "Yeah. It is."

Taehyung smiled. He held his teddy bear tight in one hand. With his other hand~ he found Jungkook's hand.

They sat like that. Two small boys. A teddy bear and a bunny. Watching the sunset.

---

In the car ride home~ Taehyung fell asleep. His head was on Jungkook's shoulder. His teddy bear was pressed between them.

Jungkook was awake. He looked out the window at the passing lights. His bunny was in his lap.

In the front seat~ Jinim looked back at them. She saw her son~ awake and quiet~ with Taehyung sleeping on him.

She saw the bunny headband still on Jungkook's head. The kitten headband on Taehyung.

She smiled and turned to her husband.

Mr. Jeon glanced in the mirror. He saw the two boys. His son was holding the bunny. The other boy was holding the bear.He drove home in comfortable silence. When they arrived~ Jungkook didn't wake Taehyung. He let him sleep.

Mr. Jeon carried Taehyung inside. The small boy didn't wake up. He just hugged his teddy bear tighter.

Mr. Jeon laid him on the couch. Jinim covered him with a blanket.Jungkook stood beside the couch~ watching Taehyung sleep.

He looked at the teddy bear in Taehyung's arms. He looked at the bunny in his own arms.

He didn't know what Taehyung was to him. A cousin. A friend. A storm in his quiet life.

But as he watched Taehyung sleep~ his small chest rising and falling~ Jungkook knew one thing.

He didn't want this day to end.

He didn't want Taehyung to leave.

He didn't want to go back to his quiet room. His quiet life. His quiet self.

Taehyung had brought noise and laughter and color into his world.

And for the first time~ Jungkook realized—he liked it.

He liked it a lot.
