"CROWN OF WHITE ASHES"

Ch - 1

The grand ballroom shimmered under golden chandeliers, filled with laughter and music as nobles gathered to celebrate Lady Rosaline’s eighteenth birthday—the beloved daughter of the house.

Yet, though it was also her birthday, Aurelia stood quietly at the far edge of the hall, her presence unnoticed, as always.

Her white hair, soft as moonlight, drew whispers wherever she went, marking her as something unwanted in a world that favored perfection.

Across the room, Rosaline shone brightly, her dark hair cascading elegantly as their mother smiled at her with a warmth Aurelia had never known.

For a moment, Aurelia allowed herself a small, foolish hope—that perhaps Cedric would remember her today.

Holding onto that fragile thought, she slipped away from the crowd in search of him, her steps light against the marble floors as the music slowly faded behind her.

The corridors were silent—almost too silent—until she stopped before a half-open door.

Soft voices drifted out.

Familiar voices.

A faint smile touched her lips as she pushed the door open…

…and it vanished instantly.

Silence followed her entrance.

Not guilt.

Not panic.

But irritation.

“You weren’t supposed to see this,” Cedric said flatly, as though she were the one who had made a mistake.

Aurelia said nothing, her fingers curling slightly into her dress.

Then his gaze hardened.

“You have white hair… did you really think someone like you wouldn’t bring bad luck?”

Clara looked away, uninterested.

“You should leave,” she said quietly.

“You’re making this awkward.”

Aurelia didn’t cry.

She didn’t shout.

Whatever should have broken inside her simply… fell silent.

Without another word, she turned and walked away.

The laughter.

The music.

The warmth.

All of it felt distant now—like something she no longer belonged to.

She didn’t look at Rosaline.

Didn’t search for Cedric again.

But as she passed the crowd—

a soft laugh reached her ear.

Delicate.

Familiar.

“Finally,” Rosaline whispered lightly,

“now she’ll stop pretending to belong here.”

Aurelia moved again… as if she hadn’t heard a thing.

Step by step, she walked past the grand doors—leaving behind the lights, the music, and the people who had never once chosen her.

Aurelia kept walking.

Her footsteps were soft, almost fading into the night itself.

For a moment, the world felt strangely still—as if it was holding its breath.

Then—

A faint sound broke the silence.

Footsteps behind her.

She stopped.

Not turning… not yet.

Her heart beat once.

Twice.

“…Aurelia.”

That voice.

Her breath caught slightly.

Cedric.

She didn’t move.

Didn’t answer.

Behind her, he stepped closer—but slower now, hesitant in a way he had never been before.

“I… didn’t mean—”

Aurelia let out a quiet breath, almost like a laugh, but softer… emptier.

“You always mean it,” she said gently, her voice calm.

That was what made it worse.

Silence stretched between them.

The wind moved again, brushing past both of them, carrying away whatever was left unsaid.

Aurelia finally turned her head slightly—not fully facing him, just enough.

Her expression wasn’t angry.

Wasn’t sad.

Just… distant.

“Some things,” she said quietly, “can’t be undone.”

Cedric’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t argue this time.

Because he knew.

For the first time… he actually knew.

Aurelia looked back toward the road ahead.

The path stretched into darkness, but it wasn’t frightening anymore.

It was… quiet.

Peaceful.

And for the first time in her life—

it didn’t feel like she was being pushed away.

It felt like she was choosing to leave.

Without another word, she walked forward again.

And this time…

she didn’t look back

Aurelia walked without direction, her steps slow but steady as the sounds of the ballroom faded behind her.

The night air was cold, brushing against her skin, yet she felt none of it.

There was no anger left in her, no sadness either—just a hollow silence that stretched endlessly inside her chest.

She didn’t know how long she had been walking.

The estate grounds were dim, shadows stretching across the stone paths.

Somewhere far behind her, voices echoed faintly, but none of them called her name. They never had.

A faint scent reached her.

Smoke.

At first, she ignored it, her mind too distant to care. But then came the shouts—sharp, panicked, breaking through the quiet.

Servants rushed past her, their footsteps hurried, their voices filled with urgency. Flames flickered against the night sky, growing higher, brighter, devouring everything in their path.

Aurelia turned slowly, her gaze falling on the burning structure. For a moment, she simply stood there, watching as chaos unfolded around her.

Then suddenly—

A force struck her shoulder.

“Don’t just stand there! Move!”

She stumbled back, her footing unsteady as she was pushed closer to the burning building. The heat hit her skin, sharp and suffocating.

A loud crack split through the air.

Before she could react—

something collapsed.

Pain exploded through her body, blinding and overwhelming. The world tilted violently, her vision drowning in fire and light. Sounds faded, voices disappeared, and everything became distant.

And in that final moment, as everything slipped away…

a single thought remained—

If there is another life… I won’t live like this again.

Darkness swallowed her whole.

A breath escaped her lips. Soft. Unsteady.

Her eyes fluttered open.

The ceiling above her was unfamiliar—plain, wooden, nothing like the grand halls she remembered. Confusion flickered through her mind as she slowly lifted her hand.

It was small.

Too small

Tiny fingers trembled in front of her eyes, delicate and childlike.

Her breath caught.

Voices echoed nearby.

“She’s awake…”

“That cursed hair…”

“Why was she even born…”

Aurelia froze.

That voice…

Her mother.

Her heart began to pound, not with fear, but with something deeper—something colder. Recognition.

Slowly, she turned her head.

And there, in the faint reflection beside her—

she saw it.

White hair

Soft. Untouched. The same as before.

Five years old.

Back.

Not a dream. Not an illusion.

A second chance.

Her small fingers curled tightly into a fist.

I won’t be weak again.

I drew in a slow breath, forcing my trembling body to still.

This room… these voices… this suffocating feeling—

I remembered all of it.

Every insult.

Every glance filled with disgust.

Every moment I was made to feel like I didn’t belong.

But not anymore.

This time, I would see everything before it happened.

And this time… I would never let them break me again.

I lowered my gaze to my small hands, still clenched tightly.

So fragile. So powerless.

…but not for long.

If this world thought I was cursed—

then I would become something far worse than a curse.

Something they couldn’t ignore.

Something they couldn’t control.

I slowly lifted my head, my eyes steady, cold.

Let them hate me.

Let them fear me.

It would only make my rise… more satisfying. 😈

The next morning felt no different.

The same cold room. The same pale light slipping through the curtains. The same silence that had always surrounded me.

But I was no longer the same.

I lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling, letting the memories settle—memories that didn’t belong to a child, yet were now mine to carry again.

The pain, the betrayal… it all felt distant and sharp at the same time.

Slowly, I pushed myself up. My body was small, weak, unfamiliar. My hands—tiny, fragile—rested against the sheets as if they didn’t belong to me.

But they did now.

And this time, I would use them differently.

A soft knock echoed through the room before the door opened without waiting for a response. A maid stepped inside, her expression stiff the moment her eyes landed on me.

“You’re awake,” she said. .

I didn’t answer immediately. Instead, I watched her. The way she avoided getting too close. The way her gaze lingered on my hair before quickly looking away.

Nothing had changed.

“…Yes,” I replied quietly.

Even my voice sounded smaller. Lighter.

Weak.

The word echoed in my mind, but I didn’t react. Not anymore.

“Get ready,” she added, already turning away. “Lady Evelyn wants to see you.”

Mother.

Of course she did.

I slipped out of bed without another word, moving slowly, carefully adjusting to this unfamiliar body. Each step felt strange, but my mind was steady. Focused.

When I entered the main hall, the atmosphere felt just as suffocating as I remembered. Servants moved quietly, avoiding my presence as if I were something unpleasant.

At the center stood my mother—and beside her, Rosaline.

Perfect, as always.

Rosaline noticed me first, her lips curving into a faint smile. Sweet. Harmless.

A lie.

“Aurelia,” my mother called, her voice sharp, impatient.

I stepped forward and stopped at a proper distance.

“…Mother.”

The word left my lips easily. Calmly.

For a brief moment, silence followed.

I saw it then—the flicker of something in her eyes. Not warmth. Not care.

Confusion.

Because I wasn’t trembling. I wasn’t looking down.

I was simply… standing.

“Stand properly,” she said coldly. “Don’t embarrass me.”

“I am standing properly,” I replied.

Soft. Polite.

But firm.

Rosaline’s smile faltered slightly.

The room grew still.

My mother’s gaze sharpened, clearly displeased, but she said nothing more. Perhaps she didn’t know what to say.

Good.

I lowered my eyes just enough to appear obedient, but my thoughts were clear.

This house hadn’t changed.

And it never would.

Love would never exist here for me.

I had chased it once—desperately, foolishly. I had tried to be enough. Tried to belong.

And in the end, it had led me to nothing but betrayal… and death.

A quiet breath escaped me.

Not this time.

I didn’t need their love.

I didn’t need their approval.

What I needed… was control.

Knowledge.

Strength.

Things no one could take away from me.

Rosaline stepped closer, her voice light as ever. “You seem different today, sister.”

I met her gaze.

Calm. Steady.

“Do I?”

For a second—just a second—something unreadable passed through her eyes.

Then she smiled again.

“Yes… but I’m sure it’s nothing.”

Of course she would say that.

She had no idea.

None of them did.

And that was exactly how I wanted it.

I turned my gaze away, no longer interested in the conversation.

Let them underestimate me.

Let them ignore me.

It would only make things easier.

Because this time…

I wasn’t here to survive.

I was here to change everything.
