When the Rain Remembers Us

Episode 1: The First Meeting

Aanya had always liked the predictability of life. She believed that if you planned things well enough, nothing could surprise you—no heartbreaks, no chaos, no unnecessary complications. Her days were simple: university, assignments, occasional coffee, and back home. Love was something she read about, not something she expected to experience.

That afternoon, however, was anything but predictable.

The sky darkened faster than usual, and within minutes, rain poured down in heavy sheets. Aanya ran along the pavement, clutching her bag over her head, trying to find shelter. Her eyes caught a small bookstore tucked between two buildings. Without thinking twice, she rushed inside.

The soft chime of the bell above the door echoed as she entered.

She exhaled, brushing raindrops off her arms, her breath slowly calming as the scent of old books wrapped around her like comfort. The place was quiet, almost frozen in time. She stepped further in, her fingers grazing the spines of books as she wandered.

And then—

Crash.

She collided into someone.

Books slipped from her hands and scattered across the wooden floor. She froze, startled, before quickly bending down to pick them up.

“I’m so sorry,” she muttered, not looking up.

“It’s okay,” a voice replied, warm and calm. “I think the rain made you do it.”

She paused, then looked up.

For a second, everything felt still.

He was smiling.

Not the forced kind people give strangers—but something genuine, easy, as if this moment amused him. His eyes held a softness that made her feel strangely aware of herself.

“I didn’t mean to—” she started.

“I know,” he said lightly, kneeling to help her gather the books. “Unless you were planning to attack me with literature.”

She almost smiled. Almost.

“Thanks,” she said, taking the last book from his hand.

“I’m Aarav,” he added, standing up.

She hesitated for a moment before replying, “Aanya.”

There was a small silence, not uncomfortable, just… unfamiliar.

The rain outside grew heavier, tapping against the glass windows like it had something to say.

“Well, Aanya,” Aarav said, glancing outside, “looks like we’re stuck here for a while.”

“I guess so.”

She moved toward a shelf, pretending to browse, but her mind wasn’t on the books anymore. She could feel his presence—not intrusive, just there.

A few minutes passed before he spoke again.

“Do you come here often?”

“No,” she replied honestly. “First time.”

“Same,” he smiled. “Funny, isn’t it? Out of all places…”

She didn’t respond, but something about his words lingered.

Out of all places… why here?

Why now?

The rain eventually slowed, and with it, the moment began to fade. Aanya picked a random book, paid for it, and walked toward the door.

As she stepped out, she heard his voice again.

“Hey.”

She turned.

“Maybe,” he said, hands in his pockets, “we’ll meet again… if the rain decides so.”

She gave a small nod, unsure of what to say, and walked away.

But that night, as she lay in bed listening to the soft drizzle outside, one thought refused to leave her mind—

For someone she had just met…

why did he feel so familiar?

Episode 2: Unexpected Conversations

Days passed, but the memory of that rainy afternoon lingered longer than Aanya expected. She tried to brush it off as just another random encounter, something that didn’t need meaning. Yet, every time clouds gathered in the sky, she found herself thinking of that bookstore… and him.

Aarav.

She didn’t expect to see him again.

But life had other plans.

A week later, she walked into a small café near her university, more out of habit than desire. The place was half-empty, filled with the quiet hum of conversations and the clinking of cups. She ordered her coffee and turned—

And there he was.

Sitting by the window, casually flipping through a book.

For a moment, she thought she was imagining things.

But then he looked up.

Their eyes met.

And just like that, he smiled again.

“Well,” he said, closing his book, “I guess the rain isn’t the only thing bringing us together.”

She let out a soft breath, something between surprise and disbelief.

“This is… strange,” she admitted.

“In a good way?” he asked.

She hesitated. “I don’t know yet.”

He laughed lightly, gesturing to the chair across from him. “Sit. Let’s figure it out.”

She should’ve said no. She should’ve kept things simple, walked away, and forgotten about him.

But she didn’t.

She sat down.

That day, they talked.

At first, it was the usual—studies, interests, favorite books. But slowly, the conversation shifted. It became deeper, more real. Aarav spoke about wanting to travel, about not believing in rigid plans. Aanya found herself opening up too, talking about her fears, her need for control.

“You think too much,” he said gently.

“And you don’t think enough,” she replied.

“Maybe that’s why we keep meeting,” he smiled.

After that day, it didn’t stop.

They ran into each other again… and again.

Sometimes at the café, sometimes near the bookstore, sometimes just walking down the same street at the same time. It felt like coincidence—but also something more.

Their conversations grew longer.

Easier.

More personal.

Aanya noticed something different about Aarav. He didn’t interrupt, didn’t judge, didn’t rush her words. He listened in a way that made her feel understood, even when she couldn’t fully express herself.

And without realizing it, she began to look forward to those moments.

To him.

One evening, as they walked under a sky painted in soft orange hues, Aarav suddenly asked, “Do you believe in fate?”

She frowned slightly. “Not really.”

“Not even a little?”

“No,” she said firmly. “Things happen because of choices, not destiny.”

He nodded, as if considering her words.

“Then I guess,” he said after a pause, “I’ll just have to keep choosing to meet you.”

Her heart skipped.

She didn’t reply.

But that night, for the first time in a long time, Aanya smiled at nothing.

And it kind of scared her.

Because she knew that something was changing.

Episode 3: The Almost Love

At some point, Aanya stopped questioning why Aarav kept appearing in her life and simply accepted it. He had become a quiet constant—something she never planned, yet something she began to rely on.

Her days still followed the same routine, but now, there was always a part of her waiting for something more.

Waiting for him.

It showed in small ways. She lingered longer at the café. She walked slower near the bookstore. She even started noticing the weather—hoping, without admitting it, that it might rain again.

Because rain meant him.

That evening, the city felt softer than usual. The streets glowed under golden lights, and a gentle breeze carried the calmness of night. Aanya and Aarav walked side by side, their shoulders almost brushing, yet neither stepping away.

“You’ve been quiet today,” Aarav said, glancing at her.

“I’m just thinking,” she replied.

“That’s dangerous,” he teased lightly. “What about?”

She hesitated, her fingers tightening around the strap of her bag. “About… this.”

He slowed his steps. “This?”

She nodded, finally looking at him. “Us.”

The word hung between them, fragile and uncertain.

Aarav stopped walking completely now. “So there is an ‘us’?”

Her heart skipped. “That’s not what I meant.”

“Then what do you mean?” he asked gently, his voice softer than usual.

Aanya struggled to find the right words. “I don’t know what this is. We meet, we talk, and it feels… important. But I don’t know what it’s turning into.”

Aarav watched her quietly, as if weighing her thoughts.

Then, without hesitation, he said,

“I think I’m falling for you.”

The world seemed to pause.

The distant sounds faded, the breeze stilled, and all Aanya could hear was her own heartbeat—loud, uneven, overwhelming.

Because she felt it too.

In the way she looked for him in crowded places.

In the way his words stayed with her long after they parted.

In the way her world seemed a little brighter when he was around.

But along with that feeling came something stronger—

Fear.

“What if it doesn’t last?” she whispered, her voice barely steady.

Aarav stepped a little closer, not too much, just enough. “What if it does?”

“What if it ends?” she insisted, her eyes searching his.

“Everything ends at some point,” he said calmly. “That doesn’t mean it’s not worth beginning.”

His words made sense.

Too much sense.

And that scared her even more.

“I can’t do this,” she said suddenly, stepping back.

A flicker of hurt crossed his face, though he tried to hide it. “Can’t… or won’t?”

“I don’t want to get hurt,” she admitted, her voice trembling now. “I’ve seen how things fall apart. I don’t want to lose something that matters.”

Aarav looked at her for a long moment, his expression soft but heavy.

“And you think not starting will protect you?” he asked quietly.

“Yes,” she said, though her voice lacked conviction.

He nodded slowly, as if accepting something he didn’t agree with.

“Okay.”

That single word felt heavier than anything else he could have said.

No arguments.

No trying to convince her.

No dramatic confession.

Just acceptance.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“I hope you don’t regret this,” he said gently, a faint sadness in his smile.

Her chest tightened, but she said nothing.

Because a part of her already knew—

she would.

“Take care, Aanya,” he added softly before turning away.

She stood there, frozen, watching him walk farther and farther until he disappeared into the crowd.

The space beside her felt emptier than ever.

And for the first time—

she didn’t feel relieved.

She felt lost.

That night, sleep didn’t come easily. His words echoed in her mind, replaying again and again.

“I think I’m falling for you.”

She closed her eyes, her heart aching with something she refused to name.

Because deep down, she knew the truth—

She wasn’t afraid of love.

She was afraid of how much it meant.

And in trying to protect herself…

she had just let it slip away...
