At 2:11 AM, Kavya heard her mother’s voice.
“Come here, beta.”
It came from under her bed.
Kavya froze, clutching her blanket. “Mom?”
A soft laugh. Too low. Too wrong.
“Come see.”
Her chest tightened. Her mother was asleep in the next room. She had just checked.
“You’re not my mom,” Kavya whispered.
Silence.
Then—
“Good.”
The voice changed.
Deeper.
Closer.
Kavya’s bed creaked slightly.
As if something shifted beneath it.
Slowly, she leaned over the edge, heart hammering, just enough to peek.
Darkness.
Nothing else.
Relief flooded her—
Until her real mother’s voice whispered behind her ear:
“Don’t look under the bed.”
Kavya turned.
Her mother stood at the door.
Pale.
Shaking.
“Because if it knows you looked…” she said softly, “it won’t stay there anymore.”
Something grabbed Kavya’s ankle.
