Falling for the Top Student

Chapter 1: The Name on the Top List

The first day of classes always felt the same.

Noise. Chaos. New faces pretending they weren’t nervous.

But for her, it was different—because today wasn’t just about starting a semester.

It was about surviving it.

She stepped into the lecture hall clutching her notebook tightly against her chest. The room was already half full, students scattered across rows, some laughing too loudly, others scrolling through their phones like nothing mattered.

She chose a seat near the middle.

Not too far. Not too close.

Safe.

“Okay class, settle down,” the professor called, adjusting his glasses. “Before we begin, I want you all to take a look at last semester’s rankings.”

A few students groaned.

Some straightened in their seats.

And then the projector lit up.

Top 10 Students of the Semester.

Her eyes scanned the list without much interest at first—until she saw it.

Kieran Vale

The room didn’t react, but she noticed something strange.

A shift.

Whispers.

Like everyone already knew the name… and respected it.

“Kieran Vale,” someone behind her murmured. “He’s insane. Always first. Like, no one even comes close.”

She frowned slightly.

So what? A smart student. Big deal.

Then—

The lecture hall door opened.

And everything changed.

A tall guy walked in, calm and unreadable, backpack hanging loosely over one shoulder. He didn’t rush. Didn’t look around. Didn’t care that every head turned toward him.

He just walked in like he already owned the room.

And then he sat two rows behind her.

The air felt different after that.

Like the noise got quieter without anyone telling it to.

She didn’t turn around.

She refused to.

But she could feel it.

The presence.

“Late again, Mr. Vale,” the professor said, but there was no real anger in his voice.

“Traffic,” the guy replied simply.

One word.

Cold. Controlled.

Like he didn’t owe anyone more explanation than that.

Class began.

But she couldn’t focus.

Because for some reason, the atmosphere kept pulling her attention backward—like gravity.

And she hated that.

She finally risked a small glance over her shoulder.

Just one second.

That was all it took.

Dark hair slightly messy. Sharp eyes looking down at his notes like nothing in the world was interesting enough to bother him. Calm expression. No emotion.

Then suddenly—

His eyes lifted.

And met hers.

She froze.

For a moment, neither of them looked away.

It wasn’t dramatic.

No music. No sparks in the air.

Just silence.

And something dangerously unfamiliar sitting between them.

Then he looked away first.

Like she wasn’t important enough to keep staring at.

Her chest tightened slightly.

Rude.

She turned back around quickly, forcing her attention to the board.

“Forget him,” she whispered to herself. “He’s just another student.”

But behind her, Kieran Vale tilted his pen slightly between his fingers…

…and for the first time that day, he wasn’t listening to the lecture either.

He was thinking about the girl who looked at him like he wasn’t supposed to matter.

Chapter 2: Assigned to Him

The next day felt heavier than it should’ve.

She told herself it was just another class. Another lecture. Another boring routine.

But somehow… her eyes still searched the room the moment she entered.

She hated that.

And she hated even more that she already knew where he would be sitting.

Two rows behind her.

Exactly like yesterday.

She walked in, chose her seat, and placed her bag down carefully—like if she moved too loudly, something might happen.

Ridiculous.

“Good morning class,” the professor began. “Today, we’ll be assigning your semester project partners.”

A collective reaction filled the room—some excited, some annoyed, most uninterested.

She stayed still.

Partners meant teamwork.

Teamwork meant problems.

The professor started reading names from his list.

“Lara and Miguel.”

“Daniella and Chris.”

Names kept pairing up until—

“Jade…”

She straightened slightly.

“…and Kieran Vale.”

Silence.

Then—

A wave of whispers exploded across the room.

Her heart dropped for a second.

No.

Out of everyone.

Why him?

She slowly turned her head without meaning to.

And there he was.

Still calm. Still unreadable.

Like the universe didn’t just assign her to the most talked-about student in campus.

Like it meant nothing.

He stood up without hesitation, grabbing his things and walking forward.

Straight toward her.

Each step felt louder than it should’ve.

When he reached her desk, he didn’t smile.

He didn’t greet her.

He just looked at her notebook for a second… then at her.

“You’re my partner,” he said simply.

Not a question.

A statement.

She blinked. “I can see that.”

A pause.

His eyes flickered—just slightly. Like he wasn’t used to people answering him like that.

“Good,” he said finally. “You’re not clueless.”

Her brows furrowed. “Excuse me?”

But he had already sat down beside her.

Beside her.

Not behind. Not far.

Too close.

She could smell faint traces of his cologne—clean, subtle, distracting in a way she didn’t want to admit.

“Let’s set rules,” he said, opening his notebook.

“Rules?” she repeated.

“Yes.” He finally looked at her again. “If we’re going to finish top-tier work, we don’t waste time.”

She crossed her arms. “Who said I need rules?”

That made him pause.

A small silence stretched between them.

Then—almost faintly—

“Interesting,” he said.

“What is?”

“You talk like you don’t care about being first.”

“I don’t,” she said quickly.

He leaned back slightly, studying her like she was a problem he hadn’t solved yet.

“You will,” he replied. “Everyone does.”

That line should’ve annoyed her.

But instead, it stayed in her head longer than it should’ve.

The professor continued speaking in the background, but she wasn’t listening anymore.

Because Kieran Vale had already turned his notebook toward her.

And written something at the top of the page.

Project Title: Undefined

She frowned. “What does that mean?”

He didn’t look up.

“It means we don’t start with expectations,” he said. “We figure it out as we go.”

She stared at him.

“You’re weird,” she muttered.

That time—

A faint smirk appeared.

Barely there.

But real.

“So are you,” he said.

And for the first time since she met him…

She didn’t have a comeback ready.

Chapter 3: Late Nights and Loud Silences

She didn’t expect the project to actually start that fast.

But Kieran Vale wasn’t the type to delay anything.

By the end of the week, she already had a message from him.

Kieran: Library. 6 PM. Don’t be late.

No “hi.” No “please.” No explanation.

Just a command.

She stared at her phone for a full five seconds before locking it.

“Bossy,” she muttered.

Still… she went.

The library was quieter than usual that night. Warm lights. Soft pages turning. The kind of silence that didn’t feel empty—just careful.

She spotted him immediately.

Of course he was already there.

Back straight. Laptop open. Notes perfectly arranged like everything in his life had a system.

She walked over and dropped her bag on the table a little harder than necessary.

“I’m not late,” she said.

He glanced at the time on his laptop.

“You are,” he replied.

She frowned. “It’s 6:01.”

“Late.”

She rolled her eyes and sat across from him. “You’re annoying.”

He didn’t react. Just slid a printed outline toward her.

“I already drafted the structure,” he said.

She blinked. “You… already started?”

“Yes.”

“Without me?”

He finally looked at her.

“You were busy,” he said simply.

That made her pause.

“I wasn’t busy.”

“You didn’t respond for two days.”

She opened her mouth—then closed it again.

Because she had seen the message.

She just ignored it.

Not because she didn’t care.

But because she didn’t expect him to actually wait.

“…Fine,” she muttered. “Let’s see it.”

She pulled the paper closer.

And froze.

It was perfect.

Clean structure. Strong arguments. Balanced workload. Even space for her input already marked in small notes.

It was so good it annoyed her.

“You act like you don’t need anyone,” she said quietly.

He didn’t look up from his laptop. “I don’t.”

That answer should’ve been arrogant.

But somehow… it sounded tired.

She studied him for a moment.

For the first time, she noticed the small things.

The faint dark circles under his eyes. The way his shoulders stayed tense even when he was sitting still. The way he never fully relaxed.

“Do you ever rest?” she asked before she could stop herself.

His typing slowed.

A pause.

Then—

“That’s not relevant,” he said.

She leaned back. “That sounds like a no.”

He didn’t answer.

Silence returned between them.

But it didn’t feel the same as before.

It felt heavier.

Minutes passed as they worked.

At some point, she stopped competing with him and just… matched his pace.

Strangely, it wasn’t uncomfortable anymore.

It was… easy.

Too easy.

“Here,” she said suddenly, pointing at his draft. “This part is too rigid. It sounds robotic.”

He glanced at where she pointed.

“You think so?”

“I know so.”

Another pause.

Then he slid the laptop slightly toward her.

“Fix it.”

She blinked. “Just like that?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t trust your own work?”

“I trust results,” he said. “Not ego.”

That line hit differently than she expected.

She typed for a moment, adjusting a paragraph, softening the tone.

When she finished, she turned the screen back to him.

He read it.

Longer than she expected.

Then—

“…Better,” he said quietly.

Just one word.

But it didn’t sound cold this time.

It sounded… honest.

She tried to hide her small smile. “Of course it is.”

He finally looked at her again.

And for a moment, he didn’t look like the untouchable top student everyone talked about.

Just a guy sitting in a quiet library.

Working beside her.

“Same time tomorrow,” he said.

She raised a brow. “That’s not a request, huh?”

“No.”

She sighed. “You really don’t like asking nicely.”

A faint pause.

Then—

“I don’t need to,” he said.

But this time, his eyes didn’t feel as distant.

And she didn’t hate the idea of coming back tomorrow.

Not even a little.
