Sabrina Jewel blinked twice, her gaze in a daze, staring at the two red lines. "I'm pregnant," she murmured. This was her fiftieth pregnancy test in her three years of marriage aside from the ones taken at hospitals till she got tired of being mocked for coming to take pregnancy tests which were constantly negative.
She beamed but at the same time, a tear dropped down her cheeks. "Yes, I'm pregnant," she self-proclaimed, rubbing her still flat stomach. "Robin would be happy. He would stop seeing other women," she assured herself when her phone began to ring. She gnawed in annoyance of this sweet moment being interrupted. Wiping the joyful tears, she answered the call without checking the caller ID.
"Hello,"
"Make some chicken soup with rice, salad and some pasta," the cold voice rang in her ears. Sometimes, it was painstaking to think about if she did the right thing by agreeing to marry Robin, knowing there was no love between them. Her father proposed and forced it but wanted her to leave Robin after a few months when they saw no change in him. Whereas, Sabrina refused because she blamed herself, feeling that if she got pregnant, Robin would change but what weird combinations? Robin Jewel, her husband of three years, never ate salads.
He never liked them. The beeping sound that met her ears after, was an indication that he had hung up on her as usual. Perhaps things would improve after she tells him about the pregnancy. It's the reason why things have been messy between them.
Sabrina sent the maids to get the groceries while she began to prepare the food. When she was done, she went to shower and changed into a new dress she bought. She even put on makeup for the first time in two years.
After the first year of marriage, she no longer cared about her appearance after constantly receiving pictures and videos of Robin's escapades with different women. Aside from loving Robin so much, she also made a promise to his father. He treated her like a princess but sadly, he died six months after arranging her marriage with Robin.
His wife, Robin's mother, had died four years earlier. She was still loved by Celia, Robin's grandma but she was too weak to care about Robin anymore. He has become a puzzle no one could piece together. His good looks made things worse because the women could not resist his charms. Even Sabrina was ashamed to agree that most times when he wanted to fuck her, she would refuse but soon melt in his arms and succumb to that same charm. Robin knew his advantage over women and used it well.
Today was special and Sabrina wanted things to change between them. Robin had arrived and she went to take his coat as usual, freezing in her step when she saw the woman beside him. It was Zayla, his 'first love.' Well, Sabrina always saw it that way since Robin's attitude towards Zayla was different from how he treated every other woman.
Zayla went to study abroad and changed her number for reasons unknown to both Robin and Sabrina before Robin's father arranged for Robin to marry Sabrina. Since his father had a health condition, Robin wanted to please him, thereby agreeing to the arrangement but overtime, he regretted it. When his father passed on, it grew worse. The so-called business collaboration his father had pushed forward had also been canceled.
Sabrina was heartbroken, her hands shaking when she reached out to take Robin's coat from him. Zayla handed hers too but Sabrina pretended to be busy with something and changed the direction of her gaze. She has been in love with Robin since she was eleven. Her knees wobbled and her voice shook.
"Her? What is she doing here?"
Robin walked past Sabrina without a glance, not appreciating the effort she had put in her appearance. He pulled Zayla with him and made her comfortable at the dining table. Sabrina endured all his escapades with other women because he never brought them home but this was his first love.
A lump formed in her throat and tears brimmed in the back of her eyes. If she was with Robin alone, she would not mind being vulnerable but not when Zayla was there. She would only be branded a nagging wife and annoy him the most. She had to be strong but how could she when everything happening before her only triggered pain?
"Zayla is not a stranger. She is the woman I should have married. She is also pregnant for me," Robin ruthlessly revealed. Seeing Sabrina's surprised look, he got infuriated, adding, "you should be happy. For three years, you could not conceive. I bumped into Zayla three months ago and she's already two months pregnant."
Every word he uttered, only widened the wound in Sabrina's heart, she stared blankly like a lost child, trying her best to not let her tears fall.
"Robin, I'm hungry," Zayla cried like a spoiled child. She looked as if she was going for a runway fashion show and her make-up was spot on. Her clothes were of the latest designer brands and she carried the appearance of a multi-million-dollar babe. It made Sabrina self-conscious, as if her efforts to look good for Robin was not enough. Robin glared Sabrina,
"You heard her. Bring her the salad I told you to prepare."
Sabrina was shocked and unmoved. So, the salad Robin requested was for Zayla. Was it the same with the rest of the dishes? Sabrina could already guess that Zayla was behind it. They used to be best friends in high school but their friendship was short, lasting for just a few months. Sabrina has always loved cooking and went to school with a packed lunch for Zayla.
She trusted Zayla, telling her about her feelings for Robin. Zayla encouraged her to make it known to him and Sabrina took the chance to speak with Robin but the day she went to his house, Zayla was already there and Robin would not even look at Sabrina. Zayla never knew Robin until she became Sabrina's friend so Sabrina had no idea how the two of them met. The betrayal was too much for her to bear so she decided to give up. What was she thinking? Robin would never love her.
She almost touched her flat belly, thinking of doing a proper check up to find out how far she had gone in her pregnancy since this was the first time she saw the two red lines instead of one. Robin already had a baby growing inside Zayla's belly so he did not need hers. It was pointless to tell him about it at this moment.
It was not enough for Zayla to take Robin from her but also wanted to tie Sabrina with her superiority belt. Sabrina was too smart for that. Everything she felt for Robin before, dwindled. Robin was a serial cheater but it was okay for as long as he did not bring his whores home. She endured so much for Robin but not anymore. She blinked and every emotion on her face was gone. She turned blank and indifferent.
"You should take her to a restaurant. I am not responsible for her," Sabrina said callously. Robin was displeased and shocked. This was the first time Sabrina disrespected him and it was not sitting well with him. Zayla lowered her head. To think that she could have Sabrina wrapped around her fingers to serve her like a maid.
"She will be living together with us from today," Robin announced. Sabrina's expression changed, as the walls she built around her emotions crumbled and fell hard. Robin's voice was void of warmth but she was used to it. It was how he related to her ever since his father died.
"What? After all the sperm, you could not for once be pregnant. Not even a miscarriage. Zayla did your job for you," he tried to pin her blame on her, recalling a few things his father told him before he died. That way, his guilt will lessen.
Sabrina blinked but she was in bewilderment. She decided to tell him if it was the only way to get Zayla out of their home but then again, the bitch was already pregnant. Even if she wanted to fight for her home Zayla would always be in it because of the child in her womb. She was standing while the lovebirds sat comfortably, she felt her world crumble right before her eyes.
She refused to return to her family because of this idiot but not anymore. His father knew who she was but Robin never took the pain to even research about her throughout their three years of marriage. Since Zayla was pregnant for him, she was done for good.
"I have taken enough, Robin. It's either she leaves or I leave."
Robin felt like this was the first time she spoke any sense today. "Bingo! The only reason I refused to kick you out was because of my dad. Now that you have mentioned it, I am giving you the option to choose. Will you stay as a humble wife and take care of Zayla or leave?"
The little light in Sabrina's heart went out. If he did not want her, then why did he fuck her anytime he was home? She should have been disgusting to him right? Well since he already intended to kick her out of his life, she would just make it easy for him.
"I want a divorce, Robin. I won't share my home with another woman."
Robin was startled by her choice but his expression remained calm. He was not expecting her to pick that option, since he knew how much she loved him. He could also not lie that there was something about Sabrina that kept bringing him back to her even when all he wanted was to hurt and send her away.
Though he always pinned it on pleasing his father, there was a silent conviction that it was not true. Right now, he had Zayla, the woman who saved his life before and the only woman he vowed to be by his side. Sabrina would not be missed and he wanted a child too so Zayla was of a much better value to him than Sabrina was or ever would be.
"Alright. I will give you two villas, two cars and 200 million as alimony."
"I don't want all that," Sabrina chimed in, her expression eerie. A thin line appeared on Robin's fore head when he grimaced. He admitted to not knowing much about Sabrina but what other reason could she be desperate to marry him? It was all because of the money. For as long as she took it, he would feel less guilty.
"So how will you survive? I don't want people telling me that my ex-wife became a beggar," Robin's voice laced with disgust and taunt while he tried to break her. Sabrina did not want anything from him since she could not get the very thing she wanted, which was his love. Sadly, she also made a promise to Robin's father and did not plan to break it. Not until she tried.
"I want this villa. It's the only thing I want. I will get the divorce papers ready tomorrow," Sabrina said calmly, but why did it hurt her so much? She loved Robin for fifteen years and got married to him for three years but he was still cold towards her. How useless could she be? It was such a shame but she was just 25 so it was not too late to pick her life back. Robin was amazed by her request.
The villa was worth 60 million and he thought it foolish if she took it over the houses, cars and money he wanted to give her. Maybe it was because of the love she had for his father. The old man lived with them in this villa for six months because he did not trust that Robin would make Sabrina happy. He did it to fill the void, which worked miraculously, the reason why Sabrina did not return to her parents when her father asked her to.
"Are you sure the villa is all you want?" Robin asked seriously, though he felt uneasy about the whole thing. However, he also felt that Sabrina had been out of touch with the world and did not know how hard it was out there without money. It would not be long before she would come running back to him and he could force her to take care of Zayla.
Even in a situation like this, she was the only one he could trust to take care of his unborn heir because she had a kind heart. Whereas, what both Sabrina and Robin failed to see was the way the color on Zayla's face drained at Robin's question. She was sure that Robin was going to give in to Sabrina's demand.
"Babe, I want this villa for our child. It's more homely," Zayla said in a sweet flattery voice. Sabrina stiffened slightly, recalling Robin's father's words,
"Sabrina, you must promise me that no matter what happens between you and my son, you must never leave this villa. It's my gift to you and there is more to it than you think."
"Dad, please don't be ridiculous. You know that I have no need for anything. If I wanted a villa like this, my father would have given me four. It should be for Robin," Sabrina recalled her response that day.
"You don't understand. A man who lacks self-control in the aspect of his zip when he has a wife at home is up for destruction. I'm sorry for being selfish but there are so many treasures in this villa, passed down from generation to generation. If it gets into the hands of another woman, we shall lose it all. Please promise me that this villa will always be yours and you will not let him have it," the middle-aged man demanded on his deathbed. He had kidney failure but they could not get a donor due to his rare blood group.
"If it makes you happy, then I will keep an eye on the villa but don't worry, I will make Robin fall in love with me. I will give him so much love that he would be left with no choice," she recalled herself saying to the sick man on the bed. If she had known things would turn out like this, she would not have made that promise but recalling how the man smiled after those words before he passed away, she knew she had to keep that promise.
"Robin, this villa has memories of your father. He treated me like a daughter and I want it preserved," Sabrina held back her tears and spoke. Zayla's eyes were red or were they green? Was it envy, jealousy or greed? There was just something about the villa. It was the reason why Zayla returned. Back then, she left after Robin's father threatened to expose her secrets but now, he was gone so she was here to stay and in this villa she must.
"Babe please, you can give her the penthouse. This is the best place for our child to grow," she tagged on Robin's shirt and spoke. Robin might be blind to certain things but he wanted to be fair.
"Zayla, at least Sabrina has been a good wife. This is all she is asking for but you have me," he pointed out with an unreadable glare which forced Zayla to lower her gaze. She feared that Robin would see through her but neither was she ready to let it go. Rather, they should have this discussion later, when she would have strong backing.
"Yes, you are right, I have you but I don't want to eat out," she lamented, casting an accusing glare at Sabrina. For as long as Zayla was concerned, Sabrina should serve her like a maid for as long as she continued to live in the villa. It was the only way for Zayla to feel good about herself, since she knew about Sabrina's history. Her father was Mr. Cobby James. A billionaire with multiple businesses. However, Robin took Zayla's 'yes,' as acceptance to his plea.
"Sabrina, since it's settled, bring us the food," Robin demanded but Sabrina seemed to be busy with something. She was talking on the phone, which was unusual for her. For as long as Robin knew, he was the only one in Sabrina's contact list. The rest were maids, drivers, bodyguards and the family doctor. And yes, Robin's best friend, Daniel Root.
Robin was even more curious because of the way Sabrina created a distance, speaking in a relaxed tone though he could not hear what she was saying. There was even a faint smile on her face which did not look forced. It brought out some hidden beauty in her he never noticed before. What was he thinking? He was never attracted to Sabrina. When he fucked her, it was because of his responsibility as a husband. In a way, it also felt different because he never used protection with her like he did with other women.
When Zayla returned, he only slept with her once without protection but that was because they were both drunk. After that day, he never slept with her again for a reason he could not tell but who knew that she was the one to make him happy after his years of miserable marriage? Sabrina finally hangs up the phone and asked,
"Did you say something?"
"The food," Robin demanded. Sabrina blinked and an evil thought came to mind. Robin would eat her food every time he came home and during the times he slept out due to reasons only he knew, he would eat as if he was starved. Putting two and two together, she yelled,
"Margaret!"
"Yes ma'am," the chief maid humbly responded, hastening to the Madam of the house. She was happy that the house would be for Sabina, which meant that her job and that of the other maids would be safe. It was bad to eavesdrop yet, Margaret was glad she did.
"Please bring the food from the kitchen," Sabrina said calmly, catching the evil smirk in the corner of Zayla's lips and oh, Robin swallowed too. He looked hungry and Sabrina wondered why there were so many expensive restaurants yet, he would always call her to cook for him.
The maid nodded and went to get it but Robin was upset. Sabrina served his food personally so why send the maid? Perhaps she was upset with Zayla's presence which was quite understandable. He wanted to insist but the aroma of the food got him tongue-tied when it arrived. Before the maid set it on the table, Sabrina bellowed,
"I didn't tell you to take it there."
Margaret froze and looked at her with a confused gaze. Robin and Zayla were equally surprised. "What do I do with it ma'am?" Margaret asked. She was a middle-aged woman and always had her hair held in a bun. She was not expecting Sabrina's next words.
"You and your friends should eat it. My treat," Sabrina smiled and spoke. Margaret smiled but was also afraid, she could not move, asking,
"Ma'am, are you sure?"
"I cooked it so eat it," Sabrina's smile grew broader when she saw the expression of the two people seated at the dining table. Margaret smiled. She knew that Sabrina was upset so she still did not move.
"Sabrina, what is the meaning of this?" Robin bellowed furiously. Sabrina shushed Margaret away with the food before she shrugged, saying,"
"You have a beautiful woman by your side. The kitchen is empty so what is hindering her from cooking for you?"
Seeing Robin rising from the dining table in anger, Sabrina quickly turned to leave but it was too late. He grabbed her by the arm, incoherently pinning her against the wall. His movement was a little violent.
As they say, a hungry man is an angry man. Robin's angry gaze bored into her amber eyes that brought out the beauty of her blonde hair. He raged,
"Why are you so insolent? When did you become like this?"
His closeness made Sabrina uncomfortable but she gazed at him coldly and truthfully responded, "I loved you for so long thinking that one day, you will love me too. I endured so much, including watching you on the news and receiving pictures and videos of your affairs with so many women, thinking you would change but I was wrong. I am done loving you, Robin. I am no longer your submissive wife."
She gritted her teeth at the last part and tried to wiggle out of his arms, failing miserably at it. Seeing she was not a match for him, she stopped fighting and only glared as he said, "Don't forget that we are not yet divorced."
The doorbell rang and Sabrina felt grateful for it. Robin got interrupted, wondering who was at the gate. The maids should go and get it but Sabrina pulled away from him and went to get it. She returned and placed the documents on the dining table, Robin was shocked. Zayla was excited though.
"How did you get it?" Robin asked. Divorce documents took time to process and only a good lawyer could get it so fast. It was even more confusing because they had talked about it not long ago. Or was it the person she was talking to on the phone? When did Sabrina know of anyone who was not in Robin's circle?
"Why do you care? They are genuine so you should sign," Sabrina coldly demanded. Robin panicked but externally, he looked calm.
"I will take time to read through them, just in case," he said smugly, assuring himself that he did not need her. Sabrina glanced between him and Zayla before she demanded,
"I need it tomorrow and I need you and your woman out of this villa too."
Now Robin was pissed. Since when did Sabrina grow horns? What fueled her confidence? Was she planning for the divorce all along or was it because she was jealous that Zayla was pregnant for him? Should she not be happy for him that he finally got someone to call him a father? Perhaps she forgot who he was. Glaring daggers at her, he spat coldly, "You do not talk to me like that."
Sabrina calmed herself. She was allowing her anger to take a toll on the situation which was not the best. The divorce was not finalized and Robin could still decide to take the villa from her. "I'm sorry, Mr. Robin Jewel, Good night," she said and walked away. She might burst into tears if she stood there any longer.
An awkward silence ensued after. Sabrina just showed a side of her which Robin never saw before, even after three years of marriage. She was becoming mysterious to him. His stomach grumbled and so did Zayla. Ah, he had not eaten anything because he was waiting for his sumptuous meal. Who thought that Sabrina could be like this? Somehow, even when she said she did not love him anymore, he felt that she was lying. It was just a matter of time. She would run back to him.
"I will order food for us," he told Zayla, who was uncomfortable. She had not had a home cooked meal in a long time because her home was not as peaceful as that of Sabrina. She had it in her to break the bitch but it seemed that even after agreeing to divorce, the bitch still walked with her head high in victory.
'Just you wait, Sabrina. This villa will still be mine and you will run back to your father. But once I get a hold of this villa, I will destroy everything your father has.'
"What about the maids? Can't they cook?" Zayla forced a smile and questioned, still not wanting to feel like she failed at her own game. Robin's response did not make her feel any better.
"Cooking is not part of their contract. Sabrina never added it because she loves to do it. I have to get a chef but he will start work from the penthouse."
Zayla frowned stubbornly, "I don't want to live in the penthouse. I want to live here," she insisted but Robin was at a loss. He never dealt with an over pampered child before. Sabrina was a matured woman, lessening his burdens and not adding to them. At 27, Zayla was still behaving like a 16 year old.
"I already gave this house to Sabrina and I'm I wrong to think that you like this house better than me?" He glared at Zayla, her resolve broke. She was moving too fast but also because she was desperate. She composed herself in time and smiled,
"No, no, it's just beautiful."
"I will get something more beautiful than this for you and our unborn child," Robin said seriously but Zayla was not amused about it. She wanted this villa because it had something impeccable. Something her family needed to bounce back and she was their only hope in getting it.
They ordered food and ate with Robin grimacing the whole time. The food was from a top restaurant but did not meet his taste so he ate little. When they were done, Robin ordered Margaret to take Zayla to the guest room. She was instantly appalled.
"Babe, I'm scared of sleeping alone."
Robin was getting upset. He had a huge corporation to manage and was not ready to babysit an adult behaving as a kid. "You are not a child, Zayla. Who were you sleeping with in Europe every night when I was not with you?" He asked in annoyance.
Embarrassment covered Zayla's eyes before she said, "Well, pregnancy is different." She tried to hide her disappointment because a month after she and Robin got drunk, she only met him with the news that she was pregnant for him, insisting that it was her first time doing it with him when they were drunk. Robin was happy and took responsibility but never slept with her after that. She even caught him fucking a woman he claimed to be a client so why not her? Why did she feel like he was hiding from her?
"Don't forget the divorce is not finalized. I need time to read this before I sign," Robin created an excuse. The point was, he did not feel sexually attracted to her after that night but since he promised to keep her by his side, he would do just that.
"Okay," Zayla smiled since it was about the divorce. Who knew what Sabrina had in her sleeves? It had to be over with. Robin went to his room and heard sobbing. Seemed that the ice queen was not so tough after all. This was the assurance he needed. Sabrina would not be able to live without him. He laid beside her on the bed and Sabrina quickly wiped her tears, putting on a strong look. She stiffened when his hand wrapped around her waist.
"DON'T TOUCH ME," she bellowed but Robin laughed and said,
"Have you forgotten that the divorce is not yet finalized? Until then, you are still my wife."
Sabrina was so upset that she wanted to slap him but he was right. The divorce was not finalized and with all the power and wealth Robin had, he could make things difficult for her. She forced a smile. After all, she was never going to do this in her life again so why not enjoy it now? She turned to her side and began to plaster kisses on his face.
It was not as easy as she thought by the time they were done. Robin drained everything out of her until she felt like paper. Tonight was different. He was fierce but also passionate. Too bad it wasn't going to happen again. Then her heart thumped. What if it affected the baby in her womb? She wasn't thinking when she gave in. Taking deep breaths, she forced herself to calm down before giving in to sleep. She was surprised that the man was still holding her naked body tightly in his arms. How weird?
By the time Sabrina woke up the next day, the papers had been signed and they had to meet in court for the final procedure. Sabrina broke down, venting everything she kept inside before. It was a painful realization after she had put on all the strength in front of him. Inside, she was just a broken little girl, who also desired to be loved and comforted.
Her attention was drawn to the time and she quickly dressed up, happy to have packed a few things the night before. By the time she reached the divorce court, Robin was already there, fuming with anger. The papers were signed and the marriage annulled. Sabrina did not expect it when he asked her,
"I'm going back to the office but I can drop you at the villa first. I don't understand the reason you refused to come with the driver."
"Thanks Mr Jewel but there's no need for that," Sabrina replied politely and Robin felt strange. Before he could tell her to stop addressing him formally, she had walked past him, which was also strange. He was the one who used to walk past her before. Still, he was determined to drop her in the villa, thereby following her.
His jaw almost hit the ground in shock when a tall, slender and handsome figure met Sabrina, instantly pulling her into his arms, towering over her and burying his face in the crook of her neck. Robin was gnashing his teeth.
