SILENT OBSESSION

The ghost in the machine

The blue light of the triple-monitor setup was the only thing illuminating Elara’s face. In the silence of her cramped apartment, the only sound was the rhythmic, frantic clicking of her mechanical keyboard. Elara Voss didn't steal money, and she didn't leak secrets for fun. She was a digital ghost, a "recovery specialist" for people who had lost things they shouldn't have. But tonight, she was chasing a ghost of her own."

'Almost there' 😀
Her eyes tracking a cascading waterfall of green code. She had found a back door into an encrypted server—a "dark" node that shouldn't have existed on any public registry. It was a masterpiece of architecture, elegant and terrifyingly cold. She couldn't resist the urge to see who owned such a fortress. Her fingers flew. Bypass. Spoof. Enter. The screen flickered. For a second, Elara felt a rush of adrenaline. She was in. But instead of files or data, a single window opened in the center of her primary screen. It was a live feed of a room. A study. It was filled with mahogany bookshelves and leather-bound volumes. A man sat behind a desk, his face obscured by the shadows, a glass of amber liquid resting near his hand. He wasn't moving. He was staring directly at the camera. Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs. She reached for the power button, her breath hitching. Abort. Disconnect. Now. Before her finger could touch the button, a line of text appeared in a simple terminal window at the bottom of her screen.

You have a very distinct rhythm to your keystrokes, Elara Voss.
Elara froze. Her name. He knew her name.

Don't turn it off. That would be a waste of such a beautiful introduction.
On the video feed, the man slowly leaned forward into the light. He was younger than she expected, with sharp, aristocratic features and eyes that seemed to see through the digital veil between them. He didn't look angry. He looked... patient.

Who are you?" Elara breathed, knowing he couldn't hear her—unless he had her mic.
As if answering, he raised his glass toward the camera in a silent toast.

I am the person who owns the door you just kicked down. And now, I think I’ll keep it open.
The screen went black. Elara’s monitors died simultaneously, leaving her in total darkness. She sat there, the silence of her apartment suddenly feeling heavy, like a hand resting on her shoulder.
