Thirty years ago…
Deep within the emerald embrace of the mountains, far beyond the reach of iron rails or paved highways, lay Silent Town.
It was a place where Mother Nature held her breath.....a sanctuary of ancient forests and crystalline air. To a stranger, it looked like a dream; to the locals, it was a self-sustaining fortress. They had their schools, their small hospital, and a police station that rarely saw a scuffle.
The Mayor, a man whose face was etched with the lines of hard-won progress, had spent a lifetime fighting the rugged terrain. He had pleaded with the city for roads that never came, eventually taking the burden onto his own shoulders.
Through sheer will, he kept the town alive, turning a secluded village into a functional, beautiful home.
But every Eden has its serpent. In Silent Town, the serpent was a Law.
In this village, innocence was not a gift.....it was a requirement. Children were forbidden to lie.
It was a rule woven into the very fabric of their morality, enforced with a cruelty that defied the town’s serene beauty. To speak a falsehood was to forfeit one’s life.
For generations, the fear of the "Final Silence" kept the children’s tongues silver-straight. Until the day the law stepped inside the Mayor’s own home.
The town square was not filled with the usual morning chatter. Instead, a heavy, suffocating heat hung over the crowd. The Mayor’s grandson....a boy with eyes like the summer sky.....stood trembling before the elders. He had broken the rule.
A simple, childish deception, yet in Silent Town, there was no such thing as a "white lie."
"He is just a child!" his mother screamed, her voice cracking against the stone walls of the courthouse.
She knelt at the feet of the village council, clutching the Mayor’s robes. "Please, Father! He didn't know! He’s your own blood!"
The Mayor looked down, his heart fracturing behind a mask of stoic duty. He looked at the villagers......the people he had served, the families he had fed. Their faces were not filled with mercy; they were masks of stone.
"The Law is the Law!" a voice shouted from the back.
"A rule for the poor is a rule for the powerful!" another joined in.
The protest grew into a roar. The very order the Mayor had worked so hard to build was now demanding the life of his grandson. Helpless against the weight of his own governance, the Mayor closed his eyes and gave the smallest, most agonizing nod.
The silence that followed the execution was louder than any scream.
The Mayor’s house, once a symbol of hope, became a tomb. Within a month, his daughter-in-law.....unable to look at the man who allowed her son to die.....signed the divorce papers and disappeared into the fog of the mountains, never to return.
The grief was a poison. Shortly after, the Mayor’s eldest son, hollowed out by the loss of his child and the departure of his wife, took his own life.
Standing amidst the wreckage of his family, the Mayor finally broke the tradition.
The law was changed. Children would no longer face the gallows or the blade for a lie; they would be punished, restricted, and shamed....but they would be allowed to live.
But as the years passed, the shadows in Silent Town only grew longer. The blood was gone from the square, but the secrets were just beginning to take root.
