The glass doors of Blackwood Corporation slid open silently, revealing the grand and majestic lobby that seemed to stretch endlessly toward the sky. The building stood tall in the heart of the business district, a symbol of power, wealth, and success that towered over every other structure in the city. To the public, it was not just an office building; it was the kingdom of Ethan Blackwood—the youngest, most brilliant, and most feared business tycoon of the generation.
Stepping inside this magnificent structure for the very first time, Clara Bennett could not help but feel small and insignificant. She stood at the entrance, her hands clutching her bag tightly against her chest, her eyes wide with awe and nervousness. The air inside was cool and crisp, filled with the soft hum of activity and the sound of footsteps moving hurriedly across the polished marble floors. Everyone around her was dressed in formal, high-end attire, walking with confidence and purpose, while she wore her best simple dress, which now felt plain and out of place among the elegance surrounding her.
“Stay calm, Clara. You can do this,” she whispered to herself, taking a deep breath to steady her racing heart. “This is the opportunity you have been waiting for. This is the only way you can help your mother and your family. No matter how hard it gets, you must hold on.”
For months, Clara had sent out countless resumes, applying to every company she could find, hoping to land a stable job that would pay well enough to cover her mother’s medical expenses and support her younger siblings. Her father had passed away years ago, leaving her as the head of the family, and since then, she had worked tirelessly, taking any job she could find just to make ends meet. When she saw the job opening for the position of Personal Secretary to the CEO of Blackwood Corporation, she had applied with little hope, thinking that someone like her—with only basic qualifications and no influential connections—would never even be considered.
Yet, against all odds, she had received the call inviting her for an interview, and shortly after that, the job offer itself. It was a miracle, or so she thought. She had no idea that this was not merely a matter of luck or her skills getting noticed. There was a reason, a secret reason, why she had been chosen among hundreds of highly qualified and experienced candidates.
Clara walked toward the reception desk, her legs feeling slightly heavy with anxiety. As she approached, the receptionist looked up from her computer, her expression professional yet distant.
“Good morning. How may I help you?” she asked politely.
“Good morning,” Clara replied, trying her best to sound composed. “I am Clara Bennett. I was hired as the new Personal Secretary. I am here to report for my first day of work.”
The receptionist’s eyes widened slightly, and she looked at Clara from head to toe with an expression that was a mix of surprise and pity. It was as if she could not believe that this simple-looking woman was the one who would be working directly under the most difficult man in the entire business world.
“Ah, yes. Ms. Bennett,” she said, her tone softening a little. “I have been informed. Please follow me. I will take you to the 50th floor. That is where the main office is located. But… I must warn you. Working for Mr. Blackwood is not easy. He is a very strict man, and he expects perfection in everything. Many have tried, and many have resigned within just a few weeks. Please… be careful.”
Clara nodded, her heart pounding even faster. She had already heard the rumors, of course. Everyone knew who Ethan Blackwood was. He was known in the business world as the “Ice King”—a man who possessed intelligence and charisma, but whose heart seemed to be made of ice. He was ruthless in business negotiations, never showed mercy to his competitors, and was known to fire employees for the smallest mistakes. He was handsome, undeniably one of the most attractive men alive, with sharp features, deep dark eyes, and a commanding presence, but his beauty was often described as cold and intimidating, like the beauty of a storm or a winter night.
“Thank you for your concern,” Clara said with a small smile. “I will do my best.”
Together, they walked toward the elevator, and as the doors closed and the lift began to ascend, Clara felt as though she was traveling not just to a higher floor, but into a completely different world. When the doors opened again, they stepped out into a floor that was even more luxurious and quiet than the lobby below. The atmosphere here was heavy, filled with a silent tension that made it feel as though everyone was holding their breath, afraid to make a single sound that might disturb the peace—or worse, disturb the man who ruled this place.
The receptionist led her to a large door made of dark wood and glass, which bore a simple golden plaque that read: CEO: Ethan Blackwood.
“Wait here for a moment,” the receptionist instructed. “I will inform him that you have arrived.”
She knocked gently on the door and entered, leaving Clara standing alone in the hallway. Every second that passed felt like an hour, and Clara found herself pacing slightly, her mind racing with thoughts. What will he be like? Will he be as terrifying as everyone says? Will I be able to meet his standards?
After a few minutes, the door opened again, and the receptionist stepped out, her face looking a little pale.
“You may go in now,” she said softly. “Good luck.”
Clara took one last deep breath, straightened her clothes, and stepped forward. She pushed the door open and walked inside, and the moment she crossed the threshold, time seemed to stop for her.
The office was enormous, designed with modern and elegant furniture, with large floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a breathtaking view of the entire city. Sunlight poured into the room, illuminating every corner, yet the space felt cold and solemn. Standing with his back facing her, looking out over the city, was the man she had come to meet.
Even from behind, he radiated power and authority. He was tall and broad-shouldered, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that fit him like a second skin. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his posture was straight and firm, showing the confidence of someone who was used to being in control of everything and everyone around him.
“Close the door,” a deep, commanding voice echoed through the room. It was a voice that was rich and captivating, yet carried a weight that made it impossible to ignore.
Clara did as she was told, gently closing the door behind her. “Good morning, Sir. I am Clara Bennett. I am reporting for duty today,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady despite the nervousness that was shaking her from within.
Slowly, the man turned around to face her.
When their eyes met, Clara felt as though electricity had run through her entire body. His eyes were dark and intense, deep like the ocean at night, and as he looked at her, it felt as though he was looking straight into her soul, reading every thought and feeling she had. There was no warmth in his gaze; it was sharp, assessing, and cold, exactly as everyone had described. His face was handsome, with high cheekbones, a strong jawline, and lips that were set in a firm, unsmiling line.
For a moment, he said nothing. He simply stood there, staring at her, making her feel small and vulnerable under his scrutiny. Clara lowered her head slightly, unable to hold his gaze for too long, feeling intimidated by the overwhelming aura he possessed.
“So you are the new secretary,” Ethan said finally. His tone was flat and serious, devoid of any emotion. “I hope you are aware of what this job entails. I do not tolerate laziness, mistakes, or excuses. Time is money, and every second wasted is a loss for this company. If you are here hoping for an easy job or a comfortable life, then you have come to the wrong place. I will demand everything from you—your time, your effort, and your focus. If you fail to meet my expectations, do not expect me to be kind or merciful. I will let you go immediately, no matter what the reason is. Do you understand me?”
His words were sharp and direct, cutting through the air like a knife. Clara felt a lump forming in her throat, but she knew she could not back down now. This job was her lifeline.
“I understand everything you have said, Sir,” Clara replied, raising her head again and looking him in the eye with determination. “I know this job is not easy, and I know you have high standards. I promise you that I will work hard, I will learn quickly, and I will do my absolute best to fulfill every task you give me. I may not be the most experienced or the most skilled person, but I have a strong will and I am willing to put in the effort required. I will not give you any reason to be disappointed in me.”
Ethan looked at her closely, and for a split second, something flickered in his eyes—something that was not coldness or anger, but something else, something soft and familiar, like a memory that he had been holding onto for a very long time. But just as quickly as it appeared, it vanished, and his expression returned to its usual stern and unreadable state.
“We will see,” he said simply. “Your desk is right outside this office. You are expected to arrive before me every morning and leave only after I have finished working. You will manage my schedule, handle my documents, answer my calls, and assist me with everything I need. You will learn how I work, how I think, and what I want, so that soon enough, you will know what I need even before I ask for it. Is that clear?”
“Yes, Sir,” Clara answered obediently.
“Good. Now, start by organizing the documents on that table. They need to be sorted and filed before noon. Do not make any mistakes. Every detail matters.”
With that, Ethan turned back toward the window, dismissing her without another word. Clara walked out of his office, feeling as though she had just survived a difficult test. Her heart was still beating rapidly, and her hands were slightly shaking, but she also felt a sense of relief. At least he had given her a chance.
As she sat down at her desk and began to work, she could not help but glance back at the closed door of his office. He is really as cold as they say, she thought to herself. His words are harsh, and his eyes show no kindness. How am I going to survive working for someone like this every single day?
But even as she asked herself this question, she could not shake off the strange feeling she had experienced when he looked at her. There were moments, brief as they were, when she thought she saw something different in his gaze—a look that seemed to know her, a look that held a deep emotion that he was trying very hard to hide. It was confusing and strange, and Clara wondered if she was just imagining things because of her nervousness.
Days turned into weeks, and Clara soon realized that everything she had heard about Ethan Blackwood was true, and perhaps even worse. He was indeed the strictest person she had ever met. He would scold her for small errors that she thought were insignificant, he would give her heavy workloads that required her to work late into the night, and he rarely spoke to her with anything other than a serious and commanding tone. There were times when she felt exhausted, both physically and emotionally, and there were nights when she would go home crying, wondering why she was putting herself through this kind of hardship.
But as time passed, Clara also began to notice things that others did not see. She started to realize that behind his cold words and strict rules, there was a hidden side to Ethan Blackwood—a side that was kind, caring, and protective, but which he only showed to her, and only when he thought she was not paying attention.
She noticed that whenever she stayed late to finish her work, there would always be hot food and warm drinks placed on her desk, even though he never mentioned anything about it. She noticed that whenever she fell ill or felt unwell, the heavy workload would suddenly become lighter, and he would give her time to rest, even though he would say it was “because he did not want a sick employee making mistakes.” She noticed that whenever other people—whether they were clients, other employees, or even his own family members—tried to belittle her or treat her badly, Ethan would immediately step in to defend her, using his authority and power to make sure she was respected and protected.
One afternoon, while Clara was working on some important documents, she accidentally knocked over a cup of coffee, spilling the hot liquid all over the papers and onto her hands. She yelped in pain as the hot liquid burned her skin, and before she could even react, Ethan was already by her side.
In that moment, the cold and strict CEO disappeared completely. His face was filled with panic and worry, something that no one had ever seen before. He grabbed her hands gently, checking the redness and the burns on her skin, his hands trembling slightly.
“Are you alright? Does it hurt badly?” he asked, his voice soft and full of concern, sounding nothing like the man who usually spoke only orders and criticisms. “Why are you so careless? Do you not know how dangerous hot liquids are? What were you thinking?”
His words sounded like scolding, but his tone was gentle, and his eyes were filled with genuine care. He quickly took her to the small medical room in the office, treating her burns with his own hands, being extremely careful not to hurt her even more. Clara sat there in silence, watching him, her heart beating fast for a completely different reason this time.
As he applied the ointment, he looked up and met her eyes, and in that moment, Clara finally understood. She realized that his strictness was never meant to hurt her. It was his way of training her, his way of making her strong, and his way of keeping her close to him. She realized that his coldness was just a mask he wore for the world, but behind that mask, his heart belonged only to her.
“Why… why are you being so nice to me, Sir?” Clara asked softly, unable to hold back her curiosity any longer. “You act so cold and strict in front of everyone, but when we are alone… you are different. Why?”
Ethan paused for a moment, his hands stopping their movement. He looked at her, and for the first time, a warm and gentle smile appeared on his lips—a smile that was beautiful and breathtaking, one that she had never seen before.
“Because you are different, Clara,” he whispered, his voice filled with emotion and sincerity. “You have always been different to me. You just don’t remember yet… but soon, I will tell you everything. I have waited for you for ten long years. I have built this empire, I have gained all this power and wealth, all just so I could find you again and protect you. The strictness, the scolding, the high expectations… they are all just my way of making sure you are strong enough to stand beside me. I am not just your boss, Clara. I am the man who has loved you for longer than you can imagine.”
Clara stared at him, her mind spinning with confusion and shock. She did not understand what he meant, but looking into his eyes, she knew that every word he said was true. There was a deep history between them, a bond that time and distance could not break, and now, the truth was finally beginning to unfold.
The room fell into a heavy silence after Ethan spoke those words. Clara sat there, her eyes wide with disbelief and confusion, her heart pounding loudly against her chest. She stared at the man sitting in front of her—the man known to the whole world as the ruthless, unfeeling Ice King—and yet, right now, he looked nothing like that reputation. His eyes were soft, filled with a depth of love and longing that made her breathless, and his expression was open and vulnerable, as if he had finally decided to remove the heavy mask he had worn for so many years.
“W-what do you mean?” Clara asked softly, her voice trembling slightly. She tried to search her memories, trying to recall if she had ever met Ethan Blackwood before, but no matter how hard she thought, she could not find any trace of him in her past. To her, he was just a stranger until a few weeks ago, a powerful man she had only read about in newspapers and seen on television. “Sir… I don’t remember ever meeting you before. How can you say you have loved me for years? And what did you mean when you said you built everything just to find me?”
Ethan let out a long, quiet sigh, and a sad smile touched his lips. He gently held her uninjured hand, his touch warm and comforting, sending a strange feeling of safety through her entire body. He looked at her face, memorizing every feature, as if he had been waiting a lifetime just to be able to look at her this closely and openly.
“I know you don’t remember,” he said gently, his voice low and soothing. “And I don’t blame you. You were young then, and what happened was something you probably wanted to forget or thought was just a small incident. But for me… that moment changed everything. It became the reason for my existence, the light that guided me through the darkest days of my life. You may have forgotten, Clara, but I have never forgotten a single detail. Not even for one second.”
He paused for a moment, as if gathering his thoughts and the strength to revisit memories that were both painful and precious to him. He guided her to sit more comfortably, ensuring that her injured hand was resting properly and that she was not in too much pain.
“Ten years ago,” Ethan began, his gaze becoming distant as he traveled back in time, “I was just a seventeen-year-old boy, running away from home and from the people who wanted to hurt me. At that time, my family was going through a terrible crisis. There were relatives who were greedy for our wealth and power, and they did not hesitate to use dirty and dangerous methods to get what they wanted. I was just a teenager, naive and powerless, and I became their target. They wanted to get rid of me so that they could claim the entire inheritance and take control of the company that my father had built with so much hard work.”
Clara listened intently, her heart aching as she heard the pain and bitterness in his voice. She had always thought that Ethan was born into luxury and power, that he had never known hardship or struggle. But now she realized that behind his success and strength was a past filled with danger and suffering.
“One night,” Ethan continued, his eyes returning to look at her face, “they sent men to attack me. I was beaten badly, left bleeding and unconscious in the deep, dark forest at the edge of the city. They thought I would die there, alone and forgotten, and they left me to my fate. I remember lying there, feeling my life slipping away, feeling cold and hopeless. I thought that was the end for me. I thought I would die without being able to do anything, without being able to protect myself or my family.”
His grip on her hand tightened slightly, not out of force, but out of emotion. “And then… you came. I didn’t know how long I had been lying there, but suddenly, I felt warmth. I felt someone touching my face, calling out to me in a soft, sweet voice. When I opened my eyes, I saw you. You were just a little girl, probably twelve or thirteen years old, wearing simple clothes, with dirt on your hands and face from playing or working. You had found me while you were gathering firewood or helping your parents, and instead of running away from a stranger who was covered in blood and looked frightening, you stayed. You didn’t leave me there to die.”
Clara’s breath caught in her throat. A faint, distant memory began to stir in the back of her mind—a memory of a rainy day, of finding someone hurt and helpless in the woods near her old home. She had thought it was just a small, insignificant event from her childhood, something she had forgotten because life had become too busy and difficult. But hearing Ethan describe it, every detail started to become clearer.
“I remember…” she whispered, her eyes widening as the memory resurfaced. “I remember finding a boy who was badly hurt. I was so scared, but I couldn’t just leave him there. I didn’t know who he was or what had happened to him. I just knew that if I left him, he would die. I brought him to the small hut we had in the forest, and I took care of him until he was strong enough to leave. But… I never knew his name. I never saw his face clearly because he was always wrapped in bandages, and he left early one morning before I woke up. I thought… I thought I would never see him again. But… that boy was you?”
A tear rolled down Ethan’s cheek, a sight that would have shocked the entire world, for no one had ever seen the great Ethan Blackwood cry. “Yes, Clara. That boy was me. You saved my life. You took care of me, fed me, cleaned my wounds, and gave me medicine with whatever little things you had. You talked to me, told me stories, and told me that I had to be strong, that life was beautiful and worth fighting for. You gave me hope when I had none. You told me that no matter how hard things get, there is always light waiting for us if we just keep moving forward. Those words… they became my mantra. They became the reason why I survived and why I fought so hard to become who I am today.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, worn-out wooden pendant, shaped like a star. It looked old and well-kept, as if it had been treasured and protected for years.
“Do you remember this?” he asked, holding it up. “You gave it to me before I left. You said it was your lucky charm, and you told me that as long as I had it, I would be safe and happy. You said it would lead me back to you one day. I have carried this with me every single day since then. I never took it off, never lost it, and never let anyone touch it. It is the most precious thing I own, more valuable than all the money, property, and power I have accumulated.”
Clara gasped, her hand flying to her own chest, where she still wore an identical pendant around her neck. She had kept it all these years too, not knowing that the person she had given it to had kept his as well.
“I gave you that?” she asked in amazement. “I thought I lost it long ago. I have kept mine because it reminds me of that time, of how good it felt to help someone and see them get better. But I never imagined…”
“I promised myself that once I recovered and became strong enough, I would come back for you,” Ethan said, his voice filled with determination and love. “But when I went back to look for you, your family had moved away. I searched everywhere, I hired private investigators, I used every resource I had, but for years, I found nothing. You had disappeared, like a dream that vanished when the morning came. But I never stopped looking. I built this company, expanded my business, and gained influence and power not just for success or wealth, but because I knew that the more powerful I became, the more resources I would have to find you. I created this empire just so I could have the means to search every corner of this country and beyond until I found you again.”
He looked deep into her eyes, making sure she understood every word he was saying.
“And then, finally, I found you. When I saw your resume come across my desk, my heart stopped. I recognized your name immediately, and when I saw your photo, I knew that my search was finally over. The girl who saved me, the girl who owned my heart from the moment I opened my eyes and saw her face, was finally here. I hired you immediately, even though many people advised me against it, saying that you were not qualified or experienced enough for such an important position. But they didn’t understand. I didn’t hire you because of your skills or your experience. I hired you because you are you. Because you are the one I have been waiting for.”
Clara sat there, overwhelmed by everything she was hearing. Her mind was a whirlwind of emotions—shock, joy, confusion, and deep affection. She had always thought that she was just an ordinary person, leading a simple life, struggling to get by day by day. She never imagined that she held such a special place in someone’s heart, or that a simple act of kindness she did as a child would lead to something so deep and meaningful.
“But… why were you so strict with me then?” Clara asked, looking at him with teary eyes. “If you were happy to have me here, why did you scold me for every little mistake? Why did you give me so much work and make things so hard for me? I thought you disliked me, or that I was just a burden to you. I cried many nights because I thought I was failing you.”
Ethan’s expression softened even more, and he reached out to gently wipe the tears from her cheeks with his thumb.
“I am sorry for making you feel that way, my love,” he said sincerely. “It was never my intention to hurt you or make you feel unloved. But I had my reasons. You see, the life I lead is not easy or safe. Being the CEO of such a large company means that I have many enemies—people who are jealous of my success, people who want what I have, and people who still hold grudges against my family. If anyone finds out that you are special to me, that you are the most important person in my life, you will become their target. They will try to hurt you, use you, or take you away from me just to get back at me or to control me.”
He paused, letting his words sink in.
“I acted strict and demanding because I wanted to train you. I wanted to make you capable, strong, and independent. I wanted you to learn everything you need to know about this world, about business, and about how to protect yourself. I wanted you to be able to stand by my side not just as the woman I love, but as my equal, someone who can handle the pressure, the responsibility, and the dangers that come with being close to me. I thought that if I made you work hard and learn quickly, you would be better prepared for whatever comes our way. And also… I was afraid. I was afraid that if I showed you too much affection too soon, you would think I was being too forward, or that you would feel uncomfortable, or worse… that you wouldn’t feel the same way about me. So I hid my feelings behind this cold and strict personality, thinking it was the safest way to be near you while protecting you at the same time.”
He smiled sadly. “I was wrong, though. I realized that my actions only made you sad and confused, and seeing you hurt was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. I decided that I couldn’t keep hiding anymore. I would rather face all the dangers in the world than make you cry or feel alone. I want you to know the truth. I want you to know that every time I scolded you, it was because I cared. Every time I gave you extra work, it was because I wanted you to grow. And every time I looked at you when you weren’t looking, I was simply admiring the woman who saved my life and gave me my reason to live.”
Clara could no longer hold back her tears. They flowed freely down her face, but these were not tears of sadness or pain. They were tears of happiness and relief. All the questions she had in her mind, all the confusion she felt, had finally been answered. She understood now. She understood why he had treated her differently, why he protected her, and why he always seemed to know things about her that she had never told anyone.
“You… you really did all of this just for me?” she asked, her voice thick with emotion. “You went through all that hardship, built this huge company, and waited for ten years… all because of something I did when I was just a child?”
“Everything I am, everything I have, and everything I will ever be… it all belongs to you, Clara,” Ethan said firmly, his eyes burning with sincerity and passion. “You are my past, my present, and my future. You are the owner of my heart, and no one can ever take that place away from you. I love you. I have loved you for ten years, and I will love you for every year that comes after this. Whether you are rich or poor, whether you are strong or weak, you are the only woman I will ever love.”
Clara looked at the man in front of her—the powerful CEO, the feared business tycoon, the man who seemed to have everything—and she realized that in reality, he was just a man who had been waiting for the love of his life for a very long time. He was just a man who had been lonely and waiting, hoping and praying that one day he would find her again.
She felt her heart opening up to him, all the walls she had built around herself melting away completely. She realized that she had also grown fond of him over the past weeks, that despite his strictness, she had started to look forward to seeing him every day, and that she felt safe whenever he was near. What she thought was just respect and fear was actually the beginning of a deep and beautiful love.
Slowly, she reached out and placed her good hand over his, looking straight into his eyes with all the honesty in her heart.
“I love you too, Ethan,” she whispered, smiling through her tears. “I didn’t realize it at first, but I think I started falling for you a long time ago. I fell for the way you protect me, the way you care for me, and the way you look at me like I am the most precious thing in the world. I was scared and confused, but now I know… this is where I belong. This is where my heart is. I love you, and I will stay by your side no matter what happens. We will face everything together, just like you said.”
The smile that appeared on Ethan’s face was brighter and more beautiful than anything Clara had ever seen. It was a smile that held all the happiness in the world. He gently pulled her into his arms, holding her close to his chest, letting her hear the steady rhythm of his heartbeat—a heartbeat that had belonged to her all along.
For a long time, they stayed there, holding each other in silence, feeling the warmth of their love and the peace that came from finally finding each other again. It was the beginning of a new chapter in their lives, a chapter filled with love and hope. But deep down, they both knew that their journey was far from over. There were still obstacles waiting for them, people who would try to separate them, and challenges that would test the strength of their love.
But as long as they had each other, they knew they could overcome anything.
The afternoon sun streamed through the large windows of the office, casting a warm golden glow over the room and the two people who were holding each other closely. For the first time in ten long years, Ethan Blackwood felt complete. The heavy weight he had carried in his heart all this time—the longing, the loneliness, and the constant worry that he might never find her again—had finally been lifted. In his arms was Clara, the woman who was not just his secretary or his employee, but the love of his life, his savior, and his destiny.
Clara rested her head against Ethan’s broad chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart. It was a sound that gave her a sense of peace and security she had never felt before. All the confusion, the tears, and the hardships of the past few weeks now seemed like small tests that fate had given them just so they could reach this beautiful moment. She looked up at him, and as she did, Ethan gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face, his eyes filled with so much love and tenderness that it made her heart flutter.
“From this moment on, nothing will ever be the same again,” Ethan said softly, his voice deep and warm. “I promise you, Clara, I will spend every single day making up for all the years we were apart. I will take care of you, protect you, and give you everything your heart desires. You will never have to worry about money, about hardship, or about being alone ever again. As long as I am breathing, I will make sure you are happy and safe.”
Clara smiled, a bright and genuine smile that lit up her whole face. “I don’t need wealth or luxury, Ethan. All I need is you. As long as we are together, I already have everything I could ever ask for. We can face anything, right? As long as we are side by side.”
“Right,” Ethan agreed, nodding firmly. “Nothing in this world can separate us now. Not people, not circumstances, and definitely not time.”
He carefully took her injured hand, examining the red marks that were slowly fading away. His expression turned serious again, but this time, it was not the stern look he showed the world. It was the look of someone who felt responsible and concerned.
“Your hand…” he murmured. “Does it still hurt?”
“Not much anymore,” Clara replied gently. “It just stings a little, but it’s nothing I can’t handle. Thank you… for taking care of me. You didn’t have to do all this, but you did, and it makes me feel so special.”
“You are special,” Ethan corrected her immediately. “You are the most special person in the entire universe to me. Never think otherwise. And from now on, I will make sure you never get hurt again, not even by something as simple as hot coffee. I will arrange for better assistants and systems so you won’t have to do tasks that could put you in danger or cause you pain. Your job will no longer be just about paperwork and schedules. Your job is simply to be by my side and let me love you.”
Clara blushed, feeling her cheeks grow warm. It was still strange for her to hear such sweet words coming from the man who was known as the ruthless and unfeeling Ice King. But she loved this side of him—the side that only she could see, the side that was soft, romantic, and deeply caring.
As the hours passed, they spent the rest of the afternoon talking, sharing stories about the years they were apart, learning about each other’s lives, dreams, and struggles. Clara told him about her family, about her mother’s illness, and how hard she had worked just to keep her family afloat. Ethan listened to every word, his heart aching as he heard about the difficulties she had gone through. He realized that while he had been building his empire and searching for her, she had been fighting her own battles, facing poverty and hardship with the same courage and kindness she had shown him years ago.
“You have been through so much, and yet you still have a heart full of goodness,” Ethan said, holding her hand tightly. “I will take care of your family too, Clara. Your mother’s health is my priority now. I have the best doctors and medical facilities available. I will make sure she gets the best treatment possible, and I will provide everything your family needs. They are my family now too, and I will treat them as such.”
Clara’s eyes filled with tears of gratitude. “Thank you, Ethan. You don’t know how much this means to me. My mother has been sick for so long, and I have always felt helpless because I couldn’t afford the treatment she needed. Now… now I have hope again.”
“You don’t have to thank me,” Ethan said, leaning forward and placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. “This is what love is, isn’t it? We share everything—the joy, the pain, the problems, and the solutions. Your problems are my problems, and your happiness is my happiness.”
By the time evening came, Ethan insisted on driving her home himself. He wanted to make sure she was safe and comfortable, and he also wanted to see the place where she lived, wanting to know every little detail about her life. As they walked out of the office together, the atmosphere had completely changed. The cold distance that used to exist between them was gone, replaced by warmth and familiarity.
When they stepped out of the CEO’s floor, the employees who were still working or passing by were shocked to the core. They stood frozen in their places, their eyes wide with disbelief, watching the scene unfolding before them.
They saw Ethan Blackwood—the man who never smiled, the man who always walked alone with an air of authority and distance—walking side by side with Clara Bennett. He was holding her uninjured hand gently, his head slightly tilted toward her as he listened to her speak, and there was a soft, gentle smile on his face that no one had ever seen before. It was as if the Ice King had finally melted, revealing the warm and loving heart that had been hidden all along.
“Is… is that really Mr. Blackwood?” whispered one secretary to her colleague, rubbing her eyes as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing. “I have worked here for five years, and I have never seen him look at anyone like that. He looks like a completely different person!”
“And look at how he is holding her hand!” another employee added. “Everyone said she wouldn’t last a month, that she would quit because of his attitude. But instead… she seems to have won his heart. How did she do it? She is just an ordinary girl…”
“Love works in mysterious ways,” said an older manager who had been watching them carefully. “And look at her. She has kindness written all over her face. Perhaps that is exactly what his cold heart needed all along.”
Clara felt the eyes of everyone on them, and she felt a little shy and self-conscious. She tried to pull her hand away slightly, feeling embarrassed, but Ethan held it even tighter, refusing to let go. He looked around at the people watching them, and instead of feeling annoyed or embarrassed, he looked proud and confident.
“Let them look,” Ethan whispered to her, his voice only for her to hear. “Let them see. I want the whole world to know that you are mine, and I am yours. There is no need to hide or be ashamed. We have nothing to be ashamed of. Our love is pure and true, and it is the most precious thing in the world.”
His words gave Clara courage, and she lifted her head high, walking beside him with a smile on her face. She realized that Ethan was right. Their love was special, and they had every right to be happy and proud of it.
When they arrived at Clara’s home, it was a small, simple house located in a quiet neighborhood. It was neat and clean, filled with warmth and love, even though it lacked luxury. Ethan walked her to the door, and before she could go inside, he pulled her gently into his arms once more.
“Rest well tonight, my love,” he said softly. “Don’t worry about work tomorrow. I have already informed everyone that your schedule will be adjusted, and you don’t have to do the heavy tasks anymore. Just focus on resting and recovering. I will send someone to check on your mother’s condition tomorrow morning, and we will arrange for her medical check-ups as soon as possible.”
“Thank you, Ethan,” Clara said, looking up at him with so much affection. “Good night.”
“Good night, Clara. Dream of me, just as I will dream of you.”
He placed a soft, sweet kiss on her lips—a kiss that was gentle and full of promise, sealing their love and their new beginning. Reluctantly, he let her go, and watched until she had safely entered her house and closed the door behind her. Only then did he turn around and walk back to his car, a happy smile still playing on his lips.
But while Ethan and Clara were basking in the joy of their newfound happiness, there were people who were watching their every move, people who were not happy with what was happening, and people who were already planning how to destroy their happiness.
In a large, luxurious mansion located in the most exclusive part of the city, a meeting was taking place. Inside the grand living room, sitting on expensive sofas, were the members of the Blackwood family—people who held great power, wealth, and influence in society. And right now, their faces were twisted with anger, disapproval, and disgust.
Sitting at the center was Mrs. Vivian Blackwood, Ethan’s mother—a woman who carried herself with elegance and pride, but whose eyes were cold and calculating. She was holding a newspaper in her hand, and on the front page was a photograph of Ethan and Clara walking out of the office building together, holding hands and smiling. The headline read: “The Ice King Melts: CEO Ethan Blackwood Spotted with Mystery Woman.”
“Disgraceful!” Mrs. Blackwood said, slamming the newspaper onto the table with force. “Absolutely disgraceful! Look at this! My son, the heir to the Blackwood empire, the most eligible bachelor in the country, is holding hands with a common girl from the slums! He is bringing shame to our family name and to our reputation!”
Beside her sat Mr. Arthur Blackwood, Ethan’s father—a stern and serious man who believed that everything in life should be decided by status, wealth, and family background. He looked at the photograph with a deep frown on his face, his expression filled with disappointment and anger.
“I knew something was wrong when he hired her,” Mr. Blackwood said in a deep, heavy voice. “I told him it was a mistake to bring someone like her into the company. I warned him that it would cause problems, but he didn’t listen. And now look what has happened! He has fallen in love with her, and he is making a fool of himself and of us in front of the whole world. This girl is clearly taking advantage of him. She probably knew who he was and planned everything just to get his money and status.”
“But father, mother, do you really think that is the case?” asked a young man sitting across from them—Ethan’s cousin, Lucas. He had a sly smile on his face, his eyes gleaming with malice and greed. “Perhaps there is another reason. Perhaps this girl is a threat to us all. Ethan is the sole heir to everything we have built. If he marries this girl, and if they have children, all of this wealth and power will eventually go to her and her family. We will be left with nothing. Is that what you want? To let the Blackwood fortune fall into the hands of strangers?”
His words struck a chord deep within the hearts of Ethan’s parents. They were proud people who had worked hard to build their position in society, and the thought of losing everything or having it passed on to someone they considered unworthy was unbearable to them.
“We cannot let that happen,” Mrs. Blackwood said firmly, her eyes turning sharp and dangerous. “Ethan is too blinded by this so-called love to see the truth. He thinks this girl is good and pure, but she is just using her charm to trap him. It is our duty as his parents and as the heads of this family to protect him and protect our legacy. We must stop this relationship before it goes any further. We must separate them, no matter what it takes.”
“But how?” asked another relative. “Ethan is stubborn and powerful. He does not listen to anyone easily, and he has the power and resources to do whatever he wants. If we try to force him, he might just rebel even more and make things worse.”
Lucas smiled confidently, leaning back against the sofa. “Do not worry. I have already thought of a plan. We cannot fight Ethan directly, but we can target the weak point—the girl herself. If she realizes that she is not welcome in this world, if she realizes that she is not good enough to stand beside Ethan, and if she sees the troubles and dangers that come with being associated with him… she will leave on her own. And if that doesn’t work… well, there are other ways to make people disappear, aren’t there?”
His words were cold and dangerous, sending a chill through the room. But instead of being shocked or stopping him, Ethan’s parents simply nodded their heads in agreement. To them, Clara was just an obstacle that needed to be removed, a problem that needed to be solved, no matter what methods had to be used.
“Make sure you handle this carefully,” Mr. Blackwood said. “We do not want any scandals or troubles. But make sure that she is gone from Ethan’s life forever. Our family’s honor and future depend on it.”
Meanwhile, in another part of the city, another person was also watching the news closely. It was Isabella Morgan, the daughter of a powerful business tycoon and the woman that everyone expected Ethan Blackwood would eventually marry. She had been pursuing Ethan for years, believing that she was the only woman worthy of him and his status. She had spent time, money, and effort trying to win his heart, but he had always ignored her and treated her with indifference.
When she saw the photograph of Ethan and Clara together, her beautiful face twisted with jealousy and rage. She crumpled the newspaper in her hands, her eyes burning with hatred.
“How dare she?” Isabella hissed through gritted teeth. “How dare a nobody like her steal the man who belongs to me! Ethan Blackwood is mine, and mine alone. I have waited for him for years, and I have done everything to be with him. I will not let this little tramp take him away from me. I will destroy her life, I will ruin her reputation, and I will make sure she regrets ever looking at Ethan. She will pay for this… with everything she has.”
As the night fell, darkness began to gather around the happy couple. While Ethan and Clara were filled with love and hope, completely unaware of the storm that was coming their way, powerful and dangerous people were already making their plans, preparing to do everything in their power to tear them apart.
Love was their greatest strength, but it was also their greatest weakness. And soon, they would find out just how difficult it would be to hold onto their happiness when the whole world seemed to be against them.
