The Kill of the Killer

Chapter 1

Followed yet?

Rain fell like it was trying to erase the city.

It hit the pavement in sharp, endless drops, washing over neon reflections and empty streets. The sirens cut through the night, loud and urgent, echoing between tall buildings as if the city itself was screaming.

Detective Jason Hale stepped out of the car first.

He didn’t rush.

He never did.

His dark eyes scanned the scene before him—a narrow alley, blocked off with yellow tape, flickering police lights painting everything in red and blue. Officers moved around in tense silence. No chatter. No jokes.

That was the first sign.

Something was wrong.

Behind him, a voice broke the stillness.

“Looks like we’re late to the party.”

Jason didn’t turn. He already knew who it was.

Adam Reed.

Best friend. Partner. The only person who could still sound casual at a crime scene.

“You’re always late,” Jason replied flatly.

Adam chuckled softly, stepping beside him. His light hair caught the flashing lights, making him look almost unreal—too calm for a place like this.

“Or maybe you’re just too early.”

Jason finally glanced at him.

Same relaxed smile. Same sharp eyes.

Nothing unusual.

“Let’s go,” Jason said.

They crossed under the tape.

The moment they stepped deeper into the alley, the air changed.

Heavier.

Colder.

Like something unseen was watching.

An officer approached them quickly, clearly uneasy.

“Detectives… you should prepare yourselves.”

Jason’s gaze sharpened. “What is it?”

The officer hesitated.

“I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Jason didn’t respond. He simply walked past him.

Adam followed.

And then—

They saw it.

Jason stopped.

For the first time in a long time… he didn’t move.

“…What the hell…” Adam muttered under his breath.

At the center of the alley sat a giant teddy bear.

Human-sized.

Its fur was dirty, worn… but that wasn’t what made it disturbing.

It was sitting upright.

Like it was posed.

Waiting.

And around it—

Silence.

No struggle marks.

No signs of chaos.

Just… stillness.

Jason stepped closer.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

The closer he got, the more details came into focus.

The stitching.

Rough.

Uneven.

New.

His jaw tightened.

“This isn’t random,” he said quietly.

Adam crouched slightly, observing from a different angle. “You think?”

Jason ignored the sarcasm.

His eyes moved slowly, analyzing everything.

The placement.

The position.

The message.

Because this—

This wasn’t just a crime.

It was a display.

“Victim?” Jason asked.

The officer behind them swallowed. “That’s the thing…”

Jason didn’t like the pause.

“What thing?”

“…We can’t identify them yet.”

Adam frowned. “What do you mean ‘can’t’?”

The officer hesitated again.

Jason didn’t wait.

He stepped closer to the teddy.

Closer.

Closer—

And then he saw it.

Something hidden within the fur.

Something wrong.

Very wrong.

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Adam noticed.

“What is it?”

Jason didn’t answer immediately.

His voice, when it came, was colder than before.

“This wasn’t just murder.”

Adam stood up straight now. “Then what is it?”

Jason’s eyes stayed locked on the teddy.

“It’s a message.”

A beat of silence.

Then—

Adam exhaled slowly. “Great. One of those.”

Jason reached out—

Then stopped.

He didn’t touch it.

Not yet.

Instead, he stepped back.

Thinking.

Analyzing.

“Whoever did this…” he said quietly, “they wanted us to find it.”

Adam tilted his head slightly. “Us?”

Jason finally looked at him.

“Not just the police. Not just anyone.”

A pause.

Then—

“Detectives.”

Adam’s smile faded a little.

“…So we’ve got a fan.”

Jason didn’t respond.

Because something about this didn’t feel like admiration.

It felt like—

Selection.

The rain continued to fall, heavier now, washing over the scene… but not enough to erase it.

Nothing could erase this.

Not anymore.

Jason turned away.

“We secure the area. No one touches anything until forensics finishes.”

The officer nodded quickly. “Yes, sir.”

Adam walked beside Jason again as they moved away from the center.

“Well,” Adam said lightly, though his eyes weren’t smiling anymore, “first case of the week and we already get a nightmare.”

Jason didn’t react.

His mind was already moving.

Patterns.

Intent.

Meaning.

“This is just the beginning,” he said.

Adam glanced at him.

“You sound pretty sure.”

Jason’s gaze shifted back toward the teddy one last time.

Something about it—

Something about the way it was placed—

It wasn’t done yet.

“No,” Jason said quietly.

“I am sure.”

A distant thunder rolled across the sky.

And somewhere, unseen…

Someone was watching.

Waiting.

For the next move.

Chapter 2

Morning came, but the city didn’t feel any lighter.

The rain had stopped, yet the sky remained heavy, covered in dull grey clouds. The crime scene was quieter now, stripped of flashing lights and loud sirens—but the tension still lingered like something unfinished.

Jason stood near the edge of the alley, hands in his coat pockets, eyes fixed on the sealed evidence area.

The teddy bear had been taken.

But the feeling it left behind hadn’t.

“Still thinking about it?”

Adam’s voice came from behind, casual as always.

Jason didn’t turn. “You’re not?”

Adam walked up beside him, holding two cups of coffee. He handed one over.

“I am,” he said. “Just trying not to let it ruin my morning.”

Jason took the coffee but didn’t drink it.

“That wasn’t a random kill.”

Adam smirked faintly. “You said that yesterday.”

“And I’m saying it again.”

This time, Adam didn’t joke.

He leaned slightly against the police barrier, eyes narrowing as he looked at the same spot Jason had been staring at.

“Okay,” he said. “Then let’s hear it. What makes this one special?”

Jason finally moved.

He turned slightly, his voice low and controlled.

“No struggle. No witnesses. No noise.”

Adam nodded. “Clean job.”

“Too clean,” Jason corrected. “And then… the display.”

Adam exhaled slowly. “Yeah. That part.”

There was a pause.

Neither of them needed to describe it.

They both saw it clearly.

Too clearly.

Jason continued, “Whoever did this didn’t just want to kill.”

Adam tilted his head. “They wanted attention?”

Jason shook his head.

“No.”

A beat.

“They wanted understanding.”

That made Adam look at him.

“…You’re saying the killer expects someone to figure it out?”

Jason met his gaze.

“Yes.”

A silence stretched between them.

Then Adam let out a quiet laugh.

“Well, that’s flattering. We’ve got a killer who believes in us.”

Jason didn’t smile.

“Or someone who chose us.”

Adam’s expression shifted slightly.

That wasn’t a joke anymore.

Before he could respond, a voice called out—

“Detectives!”

They both turned.

A young officer jogged toward them, slightly out of breath.

“Forensics report just came in.”

Jason stepped forward immediately. “What do we have?”

The officer hesitated for a second.

“Not much identification… but there’s something strange.”

Adam sighed. “Of course there is.”

The officer handed over a file.

Jason opened it.

His eyes moved quickly across the page.

Then—

They stopped.

“…What?” Adam asked.

Jason didn’t answer right away.

Instead, he handed the file to Adam.

Adam scanned it.

And then his expression changed.

“…There’s no missing persons report,” Adam said slowly.

Jason nodded once.

“Exactly.”

Adam looked back at him. “So… no one reported the victim missing?”

“No.”

“That’s impossible.”

Jason’s gaze darkened.

“Or intentional.”

Adam frowned. “You think the victim had no one?”

Jason shook his head slightly.

“No. I think someone made sure no one would look.”

The weight of that settled in.

Adam closed the file slowly.

“Okay… that’s creepy.”

Jason didn’t disagree.

“Anything else?” he asked the officer.

The officer swallowed.

“Yes, sir.”

He pointed to a section in the report.

“There was… a symbol.”

Jason’s eyes sharpened. “What kind of symbol?”

The officer hesitated again.

“It was… stitched.”

Adam let out a quiet breath. “Of course it was.”

Jason stepped closer. “Where?”

The officer’s voice dropped.

“On the inside of the teddy.”

Silence.

Jason didn’t blink.

“Describe it.”

The officer shook his head slightly. “We couldn’t fully understand it… but it looked like a pattern. Almost like… a code.”

Adam crossed his arms. “A killer who leaves codes. That’s new.”

Jason turned away slightly, already thinking.

Pattern.

Message.

Code.

This wasn’t just a crime anymore.

It was a game.

And someone had just made the first move.

Adam watched him carefully.

“I know that look,” he said. “You’re already inside it, aren’t you?”

Jason didn’t deny it.

“If it’s a code, it has meaning.”

Adam sighed. “And if it has meaning, you’re not going to sleep until you figure it out.”

Jason finally took a sip of his coffee.

Cold.

He didn’t react.

“This isn’t over,” he said.

Adam gave a small, knowing smile.

“Yeah.”

A pause.

“Something tells me… it’s just starting.”

Jason’s gaze shifted back to the alley one last time.

Empty now.

But not really.

Because whatever had started here—

Was still out there.

Watching.

Waiting.

And planning the next move.

Chapter 3

The station felt different that day.

Not louder. Not busier.

Just… heavier.

Like something had settled into the walls overnight.

Jason stood in front of the evidence board, unmoving, eyes locked on the photos pinned across it. The alley. The position. The teddy.

The stitching.

Every detail mattered.

Every detail meant something.

Behind him, chairs scraped lightly as officers moved around, voices low, cautious. No one wanted to say it out loud, but everyone felt it.

This case wasn’t normal.

“Still staring holes into it?”

Adam’s voice cut through the quiet as he walked in, tossing his jacket over a chair.

Jason didn’t look away. “You’re late.”

Adam smirked. “You say that like I haven’t been here for an hour already.”

Jason ignored that.

His focus shifted slightly to a photo—zoomed in.

The stitches.

Uneven.

But not careless.

Deliberate.

Adam walked up beside him, following his gaze.

“You’ve been looking at that for too long,” he said. “It’s just stitching.”

Jason shook his head slightly.

“No.”

A pause.

“It’s not random.”

Adam raised a brow. “You found something?”

Jason stepped closer to the board, pointing.

“Look at the spacing.”

Adam leaned in.

“Okay…”

“Now look at this one,” Jason said, pointing to another image.

Adam’s eyes moved between them.

Then—

“…Wait.”

Jason didn’t say anything.

Adam straightened a little. “That’s not messy. That’s… repeated.”

Jason nodded once.

“Pattern.”

Adam let out a low whistle. “You’re telling me the killer stitched a pattern into a teddy bear?”

Jason’s voice stayed calm.

“I’m telling you the stitching is the message.”

Silence.

Adam crossed his arms, thinking.

“…So what? It’s a code?”

“Yes.”

“And we’re supposed to what? Read it like a book?”

Jason finally turned to him.

“Yes.”

Adam blinked.

“…You’re serious.”

Jason didn’t respond.

Because he was.

A moment passed before Adam exhaled.

“Okay. Fine. Let’s say it’s a code. Where do we even start?”

Jason glanced back at the board.

“With repetition.”

Adam frowned slightly. “Repetition?”

“If it’s a code, it follows rules. If it follows rules, it repeats.”

Adam nodded slowly. “And if it repeats…”

“We can break it.”

Adam gave a small grin. “Now that sounds fun.”

Jason didn’t share the excitement.

Because something about this didn’t feel like a puzzle meant to be solved.

It felt like—

Something meant to be understood by only one person.

Before Adam could say anything else, a voice called out—

“Detectives.”

They both turned.

A senior officer approached, holding another file.

“We got something from nearby cameras.”

Jason stepped forward instantly. “Show me.”

The officer opened the file, revealing a series of grainy images.

Street view.

Nighttime.

Rain.

Blurry shapes.

Adam leaned in. “That’s it?”

“Enhancement is still in progress,” the officer said. “But we caught… something.”

Jason’s eyes scanned the images carefully.

Frame by frame.

Then—

He stopped.

“…This one.”

Adam leaned closer. “What?”

Jason pointed.

“There.”

At first, it looked like nothing.

Just shadows.

Rain.

Darkness.

But then—

Adam saw it.

A figure.

Standing at the edge of the frame.

Still.

Watching.

“…That’s him?” Adam asked quietly.

Jason didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes narrowed.

“No movement,” he said. “No blur.”

Adam frowned. “So?”

Jason looked at him.

“He wanted to be seen.”

That made Adam pause.

“…Why would a killer want that?”

Jason turned back to the photo.

Because it wasn’t just about being seen.

It was about—

Control.

“He’s not hiding,” Jason said.

Adam’s expression shifted.

“He’s waiting.”

Silence fell between them again.

The kind that settled deep.

Uncomfortable.

Real.

Adam straightened, trying to shake it off.

“Alright,” he said, forcing a lighter tone. “So we’ve got a code, a creepy teddy, and a killer who likes cameras.”

Jason didn’t react.

Adam glanced at him.

“…You’re thinking something else.”

Jason didn’t deny it.

“This isn’t just about the victims.”

Adam’s smile faded slightly.

“Then what is it about?”

Jason’s gaze stayed on the photo.

On the figure.

On the presence that felt too intentional.

“It’s about us.”

Adam went still.

“…You’re joking.”

Jason finally looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

Then—

“He’s getting closer.”

Adam let out a quiet breath.

“…Great.”

But this time—

He didn’t sound amused.

Because for the first time…

It didn’t feel like they were chasing the killer.

It felt like—

The killer had already found them.
