The Divorce Architect (Taekook)

Chapter 1: The boy no one understood

.

.

.

Kim Taehyung had always been someone people noticed—just not in the way he wanted.

There was something about him that drew attention effortlessly. Maybe it was the way he carried himself, straight-backed and unbending, or the sharpness in his eyes that made people hesitate before approaching. He wasn’t loud, nor overly expressive, yet he stood out in every room he entered.

And that, ironically, made him lonely.

Final year of university was supposed to be memorable—filled with friendships, celebrations, and the bittersweet ache of endings. For most people, it was. For Taehyung, it felt like just another phase he had to get through.

He preferred being alone.

Not because he couldn’t connect—but because connections rarely stayed.

Sitting at the far end of the lecture hall, Taehyung flipped through his notes, his handwriting neat and precise. Around him, students whispered, laughed, leaned into each other. He didn’t join. He never did.

“Hey, is this seat taken?”

The voice was unfamiliar.

Taehyung didn’t look up immediately. He finished the line he was writing, capped his pen, and only then raised his gaze.

A boy stood beside him—tall, composed, with a face that blended into the crowd yet somehow held a quiet charm. There was nothing overly striking about him, but there was something… steady.

Min Eunwoo.

Taehyung didn’t know his name yet.

“No,” Taehyung replied simply.

The boy nodded and sat down without another word.

That was their first interaction.

Simple. Forgettable.

Yet somehow, it wasn’t.

Days passed, and the quiet presence beside Taehyung became… consistent.

Eunwoo didn’t try too hard. He didn’t force conversations or invade Taehyung’s space like others sometimes did out of curiosity. Instead, he existed beside him—occasionally asking for notes, sometimes sharing small observations about lectures.

It was… easy.

And that was rare.

“You always sit here?” Eunwoo asked one afternoon, his tone casual.

Taehyung shrugged. “It’s quiet.”

Eunwoo hummed in agreement. “I like it too.”

That was it.

No dramatic conversation. No forced bonding.

But something had begun.

Taehyung wasn’t unaware of how people saw him.

He heard the whispers.

“Too proud.”

“Hard to approach.”

“Kind of rude, isn’t he?”

He never corrected them.

Because explaining yourself to people who already decided who you are… was exhausting.

But Eunwoo didn’t seem to have those assumptions.

Or maybe he just didn’t care.

And that, slowly, made a difference.

One evening, as the sun dipped low, casting long shadows across campus, Taehyung found himself walking beside Eunwoo without realizing how it had happened.

“You’re from here?” Eunwoo asked.

“No.”

“Same.”

Silence followed, but it wasn’t uncomfortable.

Taehyung noticed something then—Eunwoo wasn’t trying to impress him. He wasn’t overly expressive, nor particularly deep. He was… normal.

Steady.

Grounded.

For someone like Taehyung, who had spent most of his life standing alone, that normalcy felt strangely comforting.

It didn’t happen all at once.

Nothing with Taehyung ever did.

But slowly, piece by piece, Eunwoo became part of his routine.

Sitting together.

Walking together.

Occasionally sharing meals.

And eventually… waiting for each other.

Taehyung didn’t notice when it shifted.

When Eunwoo’s presence went from optional to expected.

When silence between them stopped being emptiness and started feeling like understanding.

For the first time in a long time, Taehyung didn’t feel entirely alone.

And that scared him.

Because he knew one thing very well—

Things that felt good… never stayed.

But still, he didn’t step back.

Didn’t distance himself.

Didn’t build the walls higher like he usually did.

Instead, for reasons he couldn’t fully explain, Kim Taehyung let Min Eunwoo stay.

And that—

That was where everything began.

Chapter 2: something that felt like warmth

Taehyung wasn’t used to waiting for people.

Yet, there he was.

Standing near the campus gate, arms crossed loosely, eyes scanning the passing crowd.

He didn’t check the time.

Didn’t fidget.

But the moment Eunwoo appeared, slightly out of breath, something in Taehyung settled.

“Sorry,” Eunwoo said, adjusting his bag. “Got held back.”

Taehyung simply turned and started walking. “You’re late.”

Eunwoo let out a small laugh, falling into step beside him. “You noticed.”

“I was leaving anyway.”

A lie.

But Eunwoo didn’t call him out.

It became a habit after that.

Waiting.

Walking.

Existing side by side.

Eunwoo wasn’t extraordinary.

That was the first thing Taehyung noticed.

He wasn’t overly talented, nor particularly ambitious in a way that stood out. He did his work, attended classes, and lived his life without making too much noise.

But he was kind.

In quiet ways.

He remembered small things—like how Taehyung preferred his coffee less sweet, or how he didn’t like crowded places. He didn’t make a big deal out of it, but he adjusted.

And Taehyung noticed.

Of course he did.

He always noticed everything.

“You don’t talk much,” Eunwoo said one day as they sat under a tree, sharing a simple meal.

Taehyung raised a brow. “You talk enough for both of us.”

Eunwoo chuckled. “That’s fair.”

A pause.

Then—

“But I don’t think you’re quiet because you have nothing to say.”

Taehyung glanced at him.

Eunwoo continued, softer now, “I think you just don’t think people are worth saying things to.”

Taehyung didn’t respond.

But for the first time, someone had said something that felt… accurate.

It was strange.

How easily Eunwoo slipped past the barriers Taehyung had built so carefully over the years.

Not by force.

Not by persistence.

But simply by being there.

Weeks turned into months.

And what started as quiet companionship slowly deepened into something harder to define.

Taehyung found himself speaking more.

Not a lot.

But more than he did with anyone else.

Eunwoo listened.

Always.

Without interrupting.

Without judging.

“You’re different from what people say,” Eunwoo admitted one evening.

Taehyung scoffed lightly. “People don’t know me.”

“I know.”

A simple response.

Yet it carried weight.

For someone like Taehyung, who had spent years being misunderstood, that acknowledgment felt… dangerous.

Because it made him want more.

More understanding.

More presence.

More of Eunwoo.

And that was the problem.

Taehyung didn’t do “more.”

He didn’t rely on people.

Didn’t build expectations.

Didn’t allow himself to need anyone.

But somewhere along the way—

He started needing Eunwoo.

He noticed it in small ways.

The way his mood shifted depending on whether Eunwoo was around.

The way silence felt heavier when Eunwoo wasn’t beside him.

The way he started looking for him in crowded spaces.

It was subtle.

Slow.

Almost unnoticeable.

But it was there.

And Eunwoo—

Eunwoo stayed consistent.

Warm.

Steady.

Safe.

For the first time in his life, Kim Taehyung felt something unfamiliar.

Something fragile.

Something he didn’t quite understand yet.

But it felt like warmth.

Chapter 3 : vows

Their relationship, in Taehyung’s eyes, was simple.

That was what made it feel so full.

There was nothing about it that would make people stop and look twice. No loud confessions, no overwhelming gestures, no kind of love that demanded attention.

It was quiet.

Ordinary.

And that was something Taehyung had never had.

So to him, it felt like everything.

It built slowly.

In shared walks where neither of them said much, yet neither left.

In small habits—Eunwoo waiting without asking, Taehyung not telling him to stop.

In the way their space began to overlap without either of them noticing when it started.

The first time Eunwoo held his hand, there was a brief pause before their fingers settled together.

Taehyung noticed that.

He noticed everything.

The slight hesitation. The carefulness. The way Eunwoo always seemed to take a second before doing something.

Taehyung didn’t pull away.

He let it happen.

And after that, it became natural.

Their closeness grew in the same quiet way.

Nothing rushed.

Nothing forced.

At night, when everything around them softened, Taehyung found himself leaning into something he didn’t fully understand.

It wasn’t about intensity.

It was about being close.

About being wanted.

Eunwoo wasn’t overwhelming.

His touch wasn’t demanding. It came with small pauses, like he was making sure it was allowed.

Taehyung felt those pauses.

And each time—

He closed the distance himself.

He adjusted.

Guided.

Stayed.

There was warmth in those moments.

Not sharp, not consuming—

But steady.

The kind that lingered even after everything went quiet again.

And Taehyung held onto that.

Because it was his.

When marriage came up, Taehyung didn’t hesitate.

To him, it felt like the next step.

Natural.

Expected.

Right.

Meeting Eunwoo’s parents was… normal.

A regular house. A regular conversation. Nothing out of place.

“What will you do after graduation?” his father asked.

“I was planning to do an internship,” Taehyung answered.

A short pause followed.

“You won’t need that after marriage.”

The words weren’t harsh.

Just… stated.

Taehyung nodded slowly.

He glanced at Eunwoo.

Eunwoo shifted slightly.

“We can… figure it out,” he said, voice not fully steady.

The conversation moved on.

Taehyung didn’t argue.

Didn’t insist.

Because to him—

This felt like something he had never experienced before.

A structure. A family. A place where decisions were made together.

He didn’t go to the internship.

Didn’t bring it up again.

When results came, he passed.

Lower than he could have.

But still passed.

He folded the paper and put it away.

That was all.

The wedding was simple.

Guests filled the space. Conversations overlapped. Nothing stood out too much.

But standing there—

Taehyung felt something different.

When he looked at Eunwoo, everything felt steady.

Like this—

This was where he was supposed to be.

The vows began.

Spoken clearly.

Line by line.

“To stay beside you.”

“To choose you.”

“To not leave, even when it becomes difficult.”

“To remain, without turning away.”

Taehyung listened carefully.

Every word settled somewhere deep.

When it was his turn, he didn’t hesitate.

He meant every word.

And when Eunwoo spoke—

There were small pauses between sentences.

Barely noticeable.

But present.

Taehyung didn’t question it.

He focused on the vows themselves.

Held onto them.

Because to him—

They weren’t just words.

They were something to live by.

By the time the ceremony ended and the door to their room closed behind them, the noise of everything else had faded.

It was quiet again.

Taehyung stood still for a moment.

Not out of hesitation—

But because everything felt… settled.

Eunwoo stepped closer.

Slower now.

“You’re tired,” he said.

Taehyung shook his head softly. “I’m not.”

There was a pause.

Full, but not uncomfortable.

Taehyung reached out first.

His fingers brushing lightly against Eunwoo’s sleeve before resting there.

Eunwoo looked at him.

And then—

He stepped closer.

There it was again.

That brief pause.

That small hesitation before fully closing the distance.

Taehyung noticed.

And this time—

He didn’t wait.

He moved forward.

The space between them disappeared completely.

The closeness felt different now.

Not something growing.

But something already chosen.

Eunwoo’s hand settled at his waist, light at first.

Not firm.

Not uncertain either—

Just careful.

Taehyung leaned into it.

And slowly—

That carefulness softened.

The night unfolded quietly.

Not rushed.

Not overwhelming.

In small movements.

In shared warmth.

In the way they learned each other without needing to speak.

Taehyung felt it all.

Not sharply—

But deeply.

The warmth of being held.

The quiet closeness that didn’t fade.

The presence of someone who stayed.

For someone who had always been alone—

That was enough.

More than enough.

Later, when everything stilled again, Taehyung remained awake.

Eunwoo’s arm rested around him.

Loose.

Natural.

Taehyung didn’t move away.

He let himself stay like that.

Because for the first time—

He didn’t feel like he had to hold everything on his own.

Days passed.

Quietly.

Normally.

Until one morning—

Taehyung stood still, staring at what he held in his hand.

He didn’t move.

Didn’t breathe properly.

Then slowly—

His grip tightened.

When Eunwoo came home, Taehyung was still there.

Waiting.

“I…” Taehyung started, voice softer than usual.

Eunwoo looked at him. “What is it?”

Taehyung lifted his gaze.

Eyes slightly wet.

“I’m pregnant.”

Silence filled the room.

Eunwoo’s lips parted.

Then closed.

Then opened again.

“I—… that’s—”

His voice didn’t settle.

Something caught in his throat.

Something unsaid.

Taehyung watched him.

Carefully.

Then—

he smiled.

Small.

Real.

Because to him—

this was happiness.
