Transmigration : The Ugly Truth of My New Life.
Chapter :- 1
The rain didn't fall; it hammered.
From the sixtieth floor, the storm turned the city into a shivering ghost of neon and wet asphalt.
He didn't look up when the door opened.
He didn't look up when the heavy footsteps approached the desk.
He simply tapped a fountain pen against a stack of documents.
—a rhythmic, metallic tink, tink, tink that served as the only heartbeat in the room.
someone
The bridge was flooded.
The older man said, his voice straining to remain steady.
someone
I came as fast as I could.
His gaze was flat, devoid of the heat of anger, which made it far more terrifying.
The older man sat. He clutched a leather briefcase like a shield.
someone
We’ve been in business together for a decade.
someone
My father trusted you. I’ve given this company my life.
David Vane
And yet, here we are.
He slid a single sheet of paper across the vast, obsidian surface of the desk.
someone
This is a liquidation.
someone
This is a mercy killing !
someone
You're destroying a hundred years of history for a three-point bump in your quarterly projections.
someone
Don't you feel anything? **hissed**
David Vane
**He leaned back, the leather of his chair creaking softly**
David Vane
I feel the passage of time. You’re wasting it.
David Vane
If your signature isn't on that line in sixty seconds, I don't just take the company.
David Vane
I take the house in the Hamptons. I take the trust funds for your daughters. I take the ground you're standing on. ❄️❄️❄️❄️
someone
You’re cold, Vane. Even for your father’s son.
Outside, a crack of thunder shook the floor-to-ceiling glass.
someone
**hand shook as he reached for the pen**
The scratch of ink on paper was the only sound for a long, agonizing minute.
He said quietly, once the paper was back in his possession.
someone
You’ll be alone in the end...
The man spat, standing up.
someone
In a tower of glass, with no one to hear you scream when it finally shatters.
David Vane
I'll have the view. That's enough for me. ❄️ **smirk**
The door closed with a soft, expensive thud.
For a moment, he didn't move. He watched the rain.
A shadow moved in the corner of the room—his assistant, stepping out from the dimness of the lounge.
Mary [ Assistant ]
The board is waiting on the conference call.
David Vane
Tell them I’ll be there in ten.
Mary [ Assistant ]
You haven't eaten since yesterday...
David ignored her, his fingers already dancing across a holographic display.
David Vane
I'm not hungry.
Mary [ Assistant ]
You’re exhausted. Sir 😟
David Vane
**He turned his head slowly**
David Vane
I pay you to manage my schedule, not my health. Is the car ready? ❄️
Mary [ Assistant ]
yes sir, mika is waiting downstairs....
He stood up, smoothing the front of a suit that cost more than the car he was about to step into.
He felt a strange, fleeting sensation in his chest—not pain, but a tightness, like a wire being pulled too taut.
David Vane
{ it's nothing... } 💭
The elevator ride was a descent into a different kind of darkness. The lobby was a cavern of white marble and hushed whispers.
When the automatic doors slid open, the humidity of the New York night hit him like a physical blow.
His driver held the umbrella, the black fabric snapping in the wind.
Mika [Driver]
The weather is turning for the worse, sir.
The driver noted as he opened the rear door.
Mika [Driver]
The sensors are picking up localized flooding on the route.
David Vane
Then find a different route.
Mika [Driver]
It might take longer, sir...
David Vane
I didn't ask for a scenic tour. I asked to be at the secondary site by midnight. Make it happen.
He slid into the back seat. The door closed, sealing out the roar of the city.
David Vane
**He pulled a tablet from the seat pocket**
The blue light reflecting in his eyes, turning them into something synthetic.
The car pulled away, the tires hissing against the flooded gutters.
David Vane
**He watched the city lights blur into long, jagged streaks of gold and red.**
The driver asked after several miles of silence.
Mika [Driver]
The bridge... it's swaying quite a bit in this wind. Perhaps we should pull over until the gust passes?
Mika [Driver]
Sir, the visibility is—
David Vane
I don't pay you for your meteorological opinions.
David Vane
I pay you to move this car from point A to point B. If you can't handle a bit of rain, I’ll find someone who can.
The car surged, the engine growling as it climbed the ramp onto the suspension bridge.
Below them, the river was a black abyss, churning with whitecaps.
David Vane
**He stared at the screen in his hand**
But for the first time in years, the numbers didn't make sense. They were just lines.
He looked out the window at the steel cables of the bridge, shivering under the pressure of the storm.
David Vane
Is the cabin pressurized? **he asked suddenly**
David Vane
The car. It feels... tight. Like the air is running out...
Mika [Driver]
The climate control is at the standard setting, sir. Would you like me to lower the temperature?
He pressed his palm against the glass.
It was freezing, vibrating with the force of the wind.
He had built a world where he controlled everything—the markets, the people, the very air he breathed.
And yet, as the car crested the center of the bridge, suspended between a dark sky and a darker sea, he felt a sudden, piercing realization.
David Vane
Faster, Just get me there. **whispered**
