Whispers Beneath the Jade Sky

The Silent Stars and the Unruly Blossom

The Silent Stars and the Unruly Blossom

The night sky stretched endlessly over the imperial capital, painted in deep shades of indigo and silver. Lanterns flickered like fallen stars along the palace walls, but high above them all, the true stars shimmered—quiet, eternal, and knowing.

Inside the Observatory Tower, where few dared to disturb, stood a man draped in flowing robes the color of midnight.

Zhang Wei.

The Empire’s most revered astrologer.

He stood by the open window, unmoving, his long black hair swaying gently in the cool wind. His sharp yet serene eyes traced the constellations with practiced ease. To him, the heavens were not just beauty—they were truth, fate, and warning.

“The stars are restless tonight…” he murmured softly, his voice calm like still water.

A servant standing behind him hesitated before speaking.

“Master Zhang, His Majesty has summoned you to court at dawn.”

Zhang Wei did not turn.

“I know,” he replied simply.

He had already seen it.

A shift in destiny.

A thread being pulled.

And at the center of it… was not war, not disaster—but a person.

A girl.

Meanwhile, far from the quiet of the observatory, chaos bloomed like fireworks within Minister Lin’s grand residence.

“Miss! MISS! Please come down from there!”

Servants ran in panic across the courtyard, their heads tilted upward in horror.

Perched boldly on the highest branch of a flowering plum tree sat a young woman in bright silk robes, swinging her legs as if she were a carefree child.

Lin Meiyue.

The Minister’s only daughter.

And the kingdom’s greatest headache.

“Oh, relax!” she called down with a grin, plucking a plum and tossing it into her mouth. “I just wanted a better view of the sunset!”

“Better view?! You climbed a forbidden tree in formal attire!”

“And?” she raised a brow mischievously. “It’s still standing, isn’t it?”

A few petals fell with the breeze as she leaned back lazily, completely ignoring the chaos below.

Her beauty was undeniable—bright eyes full of life, lips always curved in playful defiance—but it was her spirit that made her unforgettable. She was fire in human form, untamed and unpredictable.

And utterly unsuited for the expectations placed upon her.

Inside the main hall, Minister Lin stood with a pale face, clutching an imperial scroll.

“This… this cannot be…”

His wife looked at him anxiously.

“What happened?”

He swallowed hard.

“It’s a decree from the palace.”

At that exact moment, Meiyue leapt down from the tree with effortless grace and strode into the hall, brushing petals off her sleeves.

“What’s all the fuss about?” she asked casually.

Minister Lin turned toward her slowly, his expression strained.

“Meiyue… you are to be married.”

Silence fell.

For a moment, even the wind seemed to stop.

Then—

“What?” she blinked, then laughed. “To who? Some boring noble who talks like a history book?”

Her father hesitated.

“…Zhang Wei.”

The name landed like thunder.

Meiyue’s smile faded just slightly.

“The astrologer?” she tilted her head. “The one who barely speaks? The one who stares at the sky like it owes him money?”

“Yes,” Minister Lin sighed heavily. “Chosen by the Emperor himself.”

Meiyue crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing—not in fear, but in curiosity.

“A man who reads stars…” she muttered. “And they think he can handle me?”

A slow, dangerous smile spread across her face.

“This might actually be interesting.”

Back at the Observatory, Zhang Wei finally closed his eyes.

The wind shifted.

And in his mind, he saw her clearly for the first time.

A girl laughing beneath falling petals.

A storm wrapped in silk.

His future.

His wife.

His greatest imbalance.

Zhang Wei exhaled slowly, his expression unchanged—but for the first time, his calm felt… challenged.

“The stars…” he whispered, “have made a reckless choice.”

The Girl Who Fell From the Wall

Morning sunlight spread across the imperial capital as merchants opened their shops and nobles traveled through the busy streets in decorated carriages. News of the Emperor’s marriage decree had already begun spreading throughout the city.

The calm astrologer Zhang Wei was going to marry Minister Lin’s troublesome daughter.

Half the capital was shocked.

The other half was entertained.

Inside the Celestial Observatory, however, silence remained untouched.

Zhang Wei sat beside a low wooden table, carefully arranging ancient star charts beneath the morning light. His white robes flowed neatly around him while soft incense smoke curled through the room.

A young palace official stood nearby nervously.

“Master Zhang,” he began carefully, “everyone in the capital is discussing your marriage.”

Zhang Wei calmly poured tea into a porcelain cup.

“People discuss many things.”

The official hesitated.

“They say Lady Lin climbed onto her residence roof last night and threatened to run away.”

Zhang Wei paused for the first time.

Only briefly.

Then he continued drinking his tea as though nothing happened.

“I see.”

The official stared at him in disbelief.

How could this man remain calm about everything?

At that exact moment, chaos was indeed unfolding inside Minister Lin’s residence.

“Miss! Please stop running!”

Lin Meiyue sprinted through the courtyard while several maids chased after her carrying expensive dresses and jewelry boxes.

“I said I’m not wearing those!” she protested loudly.

“But Lady Meiyue, the royal tailor personally prepared them!”

“That makes them even worse!”

She darted around a stone pillar and climbed halfway onto the courtyard wall before anyone could stop her.

Her mother nearly fainted.

“MEIYUE!”

“What?” she replied innocently from the wall. “I’m only getting fresh air.”

“You are supposed to learn proper etiquette before meeting your future husband!”

Meiyue rolled her eyes dramatically.

“If he truly studies stars all day, I doubt he even notices people.”

The servants exchanged helpless looks.

Everyone in the capital feared Zhang Wei because of his cold and unreadable nature.

Everyone except Lin Meiyue.

A maid suddenly pointed toward the front gates in panic.

“The royal carriage has arrived!”

Meiyue froze.

Her mother straightened immediately while servants hurried into formation.

A golden carriage bearing the royal emblem slowly entered the courtyard.

Meiyue narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

“Why is the palace here?”

The carriage doors opened.

A tall figure stepped out gracefully.

White robes.

Long black hair.

Calm dark eyes.

The entire courtyard fell silent instantly.

Zhang Wei himself had arrived.

Several servants quickly bowed their heads while Minister Lin hurried forward nervously.

“Master Zhang, we did not expect your visit so soon.”

Zhang Wei inclined his head politely.

“His Majesty requested that I deliver ceremonial gifts personally.”

His voice was low and calm, smooth like quiet water.

Meiyue crossed her arms while sitting on the wall above everyone.

So this was the famous astrologer.

He was even prettier than the rumors claimed.

Annoyingly pretty.

Zhang Wei calmly glanced upward.

Their eyes met for the first time.

For a brief second, the noisy courtyard seemed to disappear.

Meiyue expected him to look away immediately like most noblemen did when embarrassed.

But Zhang Wei simply observed her quietly.

Calm.

Unreadable.

As though he were studying the moon itself.

Meiyue suddenly felt strangely challenged.

“You’re staring,” she declared boldly.

Gasps spread across the courtyard.

Minister Lin almost died on the spot.

But Zhang Wei showed no reaction.

“You are sitting on a dangerous wall,” he replied calmly.

Meiyue smirked proudly.

“I never fall.”

The moment the words left her mouth, one loose stone shifted beneath her foot.

Her eyes widened.

The servants screamed.

And Lin Meiyue fell directly from the wall.

Before anyone could react, Zhang Wei stepped forward swiftly.

His sleeves moved like flowing clouds as he caught her effortlessly in his arms.

Silence.

Complete silence.

Meiyue blinked in shock.

One of his arms supported her waist securely while the other steadied her shoulders. Up close, she could see how unfairly handsome he was.

His face remained calm, but his grip was firm and warm.

The servants stared with open mouths.

Minister Lin nearly cried from relief.

For the first time in years, Zhang Wei’s perfectly composed expression shifted slightly.

His brows furrowed faintly.

“You should be more careful,” he said quietly.

Meiyue stared at him for several seconds before slowly grinning.

“Oh,” she whispered mischievously, “so the great astrologer does know how to catch people.”

The servants covered their faces in horror.

Flirting.

She was openly flirting.

But instead of reacting coldly, Zhang Wei simply released her gently and stepped back.

“I only prevent disasters when possible.”

Meiyue’s smile widened instantly.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Because for the first time in a long while, someone had not become frightened, embarrassed, or angry because of her behavior.

And for the first time in years, Zhang Wei found himself unable to completely predict what would happen next.

Far above them, hidden behind daylight, the stars quietly shifted.

Their story had finally begun.

The Astrologer’s Patience

The news spread across the capital before sunset.

Lady Lin had fallen from a wall.

And Zhang Wei had caught her.

Servants whispered about it in palace kitchens. Noblewomen discussed it behind silk fans during tea gatherings. Even the guards at the city gates seemed entertained.

“The astrologer touched a woman?”

“I heard he carried her.”

“No, no, I heard she almost landed on top of him intentionally!”

Inside Minister Lin’s residence, however, the atmosphere was far less amusing.

“Sit properly.”

“I am sitting properly.”

“You are upside down on the chair.”

Lin Meiyue sighed dramatically before dropping her legs back to the floor.

Her mother pressed her fingers against her temple in exhaustion.

“How can you behave this way when your wedding date may be announced any day now?”

Meiyue lazily bit into a sweet pastry.

“Maybe he’ll cancel the marriage himself after meeting me.”

A maid standing nearby hesitated before speaking softly.

“But Master Zhang did not seem displeased yesterday.”

Meiyue paused slightly.

That was true.

Most men became nervous around her within moments. Either they feared offending her noble status or became completely flustered by her unpredictable behavior.

But Zhang Wei…

He remained calm no matter what she said.

That strangely irritated her.

And intrigued her even more.

Meanwhile, inside the Celestial Observatory, Zhang Wei quietly read through celestial records while sunlight streamed across the floor.

His assistant Shen Yu stood nearby organizing scrolls.

After several minutes of silence, Shen Yu finally spoke carefully.

“Master… may I ask something?”

“You already intend to.”

Shen Yu awkwardly coughed.

“Yesterday when Lady Lin fell… you moved very quickly.”

Zhang Wei continued reading.

“A person was falling.”

“Yes, but normally you dislike physical contact.”

Silence.

Shen Yu slowly grinned.

“Oh?”

Zhang Wei calmly closed the scroll.

“Shen Yu.”

“Yes?”

“You speak too much.”

The assistant immediately lowered his head while secretly trying not to laugh.

For years Zhang Wei had lived untouched by emotion, completely devoted to astronomy, fate calculations, and royal duties. Women admired him endlessly, yet none had ever succeeded in disrupting his composure.

Until Lin Meiyue appeared like a walking storm.

At that exact moment, a palace servant entered hurriedly.

“Master Zhang, Her Majesty the Queen requests your presence at the palace gardens.”

Zhang Wei stood gracefully.

The Queen rarely summoned him personally.

Which meant trouble.

And he was correct.

The moment he arrived at the royal garden, he heard laughter echoing through the air.

Loud laughter.

Familiar laughter.

Zhang Wei stopped walking.

Beside the lotus pond stood Lin Meiyue.

She was currently balancing herself along the edge of the pond while several horrified palace maids begged her to come down safely.

The Queen sat nearby watching with amused eyes.

The instant Meiyue noticed Zhang Wei, her face brightened mischievously.

“Master Astrologer!”

The maids nearly cried.

Why did she sound excited to see him?

Zhang Wei approached calmly and bowed respectfully toward the Queen.

“Your Majesty.”

The Queen smiled knowingly.

“Perfect timing. Your future wife refuses to behave.”

Meiyue crossed her arms proudly.

“I behave perfectly fine.”

At that exact second, her foot slipped slightly on the stone edge.

Again.

The maids gasped loudly.

But this time Zhang Wei simply looked at her calmly.

“Lady Lin,” he said evenly, “if you fall twice within two days, the stars may begin mocking you.”

For a moment, silence filled the garden.

Then the Queen burst into laughter.

Even the servants struggled not to smile.

Meiyue stared at Zhang Wei in disbelief.

Did he just joke?

The great emotionless astrologer actually made a joke.

Her eyes sparkled instantly.

“You can tease people?” she asked excitedly.

Zhang Wei looked completely unbothered.

“Only when necessary.”

Meiyue jumped down from the pond edge and walked directly toward him.

Very close.

Close enough for the palace maids to panic internally.

She tilted her head upward with a playful grin.

“You’re more interesting than I thought.”

“And you are more troublesome than expected.”

“That sounds like praise.”

“It was not.”

The Queen watched them quietly, hiding her smile behind her tea cup.

The Emperor’s decision had seemed ridiculous at first.

A calm astrologer.

A chaotic noblewoman.

Moon and wildfire.

Yet somehow, standing together beneath falling lotus petals, they looked strangely balanced.

As though fate itself had carefully placed them side by side.

Meiyue suddenly leaned closer to Zhang Wei and whispered mischievously,

“Tell me honestly… did the stars truly choose me?”

Zhang Wei lowered his eyes toward her.

For a brief moment, the wind softened around them.

“Yes,” he answered quietly.

And for reasons she could not explain, Lin Meiyue’s heartbeat skipped once.
