Chapter 1: Raising the Bar
Kageyama, now in his third year, sprints to the club room to change for practice.
Hinata
Oi! You're a little later than usual.
Kageyama
My homeroom teacher wanted to talk about something important.
Hinata
This early in the school year? Did you do anything bad on the first day back?
Kageyama
She told me she expects me to do better in my studies.
Kageyama
College scouts will consider academic standings.
Hinata
Well, if you would just come and study with me and Yachi--
Yamaguchi
OI! HURRY UP! TAKEDA-SAN HAS AN ANNOUNCEMENT.
Kageyama and Hinata rush down to the court to meet everyone there.
Takeda
You've all come far from the baby crows that you once were.
Takeda
Still, it does not mean there is no room for improvement.
Takeda
You must be able to challenge yourselves and push your abilities to its limits.
Takeda
The office has decided to raise the bar of academic standards for students with extracurricular activities.
Takeda
All those with clubs will have to maintain a grade higher than 80 by the end of each term, otherwise they will have to be excluded from all their club's activities in the term that follows.
Kageyama grits his teeth.
Takeda
This applies to all of you, but most especially the seniors. The passing rate of our school in college entrance tests have been mediocre at best, and the admins have decided to change that through encouraging you to be better.
Takeda
So do good this year, please?
Yamaguchi
We will! Thank you!
Yamaguchi
ALL RIGHT! LET'S START PRACTICE!
The Karasuno Volleyball Club had their first practice of the term. With Takeda-san's announcement, pressure was evident on the seniors... except for one.
Tsukishima
You seemed distracted today, king.
Tsukishima
Servant forgot to bring you milk this morning?
Tsukishima
Or is it because of...
Tsukishima sneers. They all knew what was boggling Kageyama's mind.
Kageyama
I will hit you with this ball so hard...
Yamaguchi
If it helps, I can help get you a tutor.
Hinata
Why don't you just be the one that tutors us?
Yamaguchi
I help around my community a lot. I don't really have much time to fit in a new activity in my life.
Kageyama
Forget it. I'll find a way... probably.
Tsukishima
Aw... prideful much?
Kageyama
Oh shut up, bean pole.
The boys tidy up the court before leaving. Kageyama and Tsukishima were mopping the floor when...

I'm sorry. May I speak with Yachi for a moment?
Yamaguchi
Y/N-san! Ah, eh. Sure!
Yamaguchi's face instantly turned crimson. Tsukishima, who was mopping in the middle of the court, stopped dead in his tracks as he had his eyes glued to Y/N.
Y/N gives a small smile and nods. Yachi steps out to talk with her.
Kageyama
Oi! If you're not going to do it right, don't stay in the middle!
Kageyama hits Tsukishima's nape with the stick of his mop.
Tsukishima
Tsss. I covered a way bigger area than you, king.
Tsukishima gets back to mopping. Hinata, who had only gone back from placing the balls in the storage room, looked curiously at the brown-haired girl talking to Yachi.
Hinata
Oh. Yamaguchi-san, who's Yachi's friend?
Yamaguchi
Y/N. More of a classmate than a friend though. She's crazy smart.
Tsukishima
And crazy attractive.
Tsukishima
Too attractive for a nerd.
Yamaguchi
She's top three in our year. Her best subject is English, and she's really talented. I don't know anyone as well-rounded as her.
Hinata
How come I've never heard of her before?
Tsukishima
Picky with friends. She talks to people mostly on formal matters. It seems to me she has trust issues.
Yamaguchi
But she's actually really friendly! I think it's just her aura. She's really scary when she's not smiling.
Hinata
Huh. Kinda like you, Kageyama.
Tsukishima
Kageyama looks like a villain when he smiles.
Kageyama ignores this. He finishes up and gets ready to head home.
Y/N
Yamaguchi-san, thank you. I'll be off now.
Y/N
And congrats on becoming captain.
Yamaguchi opened his mouth but no words came out.
Y/N smirked at this and winked before finally leaving.
Tsukishima
No, you're just being oblivious because she's a girl.
Hinata
SO YOU LIKE HER, YAMAGUCHI-SAN?
Tsukishima lets out a laugh.
Yamaguchi
Not in the way you think.
Yamaguchi
We rarely talk but it's nice to have her as an acquaintance.
Tsukishima
She praises Yamaguchi more than anyone in her class.
Yamaguchi
I think she just likes motivating people.
Yamaguchi
And, well, she's really influential.
Kageyama
That powerful, huh?
Tsukishima
Thought you weren't interested in this conversation?
Kageyama
Tch, whatever. I'm going home.
Kageyama and Hinata walk out the school together. At one point before making a turn to his street, Kageyama swore he saw a brown-haired girl walking behind him from the corner of his eye.
Y/N walks past him, as he was blocking the sidewalk and makes a turn opposite the direction of his home.

The entirety of the 3rd Year- Class 5 stares at Y/N. It seemed like no one had the guts to reply.
Having arrived 20 minutes before the bell, Y/N decides to take a nap and rests her head on her desk.
Yamaguchi
Shh, I think she's asleep.
Yamaguchi
We can come back later.
Tsukishima
Tsk, we're already here. Might as well get this over with.
Yamaguchi
Maybe she's tired... from studying all night...
Tsukishima raises his eyebrow at Yamaguchi.
Yamaguchi
I don't know! I don't want to annoy her so early in the morning.
Yamaguchi
I might get on her bad side.
Tsukishima
She's like what? 5'3? 5'4 tops?
Tsukishima
What is she gonna do? Pinch your arms?
Y/N
I can hear you, you know.
Y/N sighs as she lifts up her head to face the bickering boys from Class 4.
Yamaguchi
Ohayou, Y/N-san. Hehe.
Tsukishima rolls his eyes.
Yamaguchi
We were wondering if you... uh... well...
Yamaguchi
Considering how much of a busy woman you are... uh... and...

Maybe there's a possibility that you... um... could...
Tsukishima
Oh, this is getting ridiculous.

We'd like to ask for help in assissting some of our teammates in their studies.

If possible, could you fit some time in your schedule after school to tutor them?
Tsukishima
They're real idiots but not a hopeless case, so it'd be great if you'd lend a hand.
Yamaguchi
Tsukki... that was too... straightforward...
The school bell rings, signaling the start of the first period. Yamaguchi let out a frightened noise.
Y/N
Can we talk later? I'll be at the grounds during lunch.
Yamaguchi
Sure! Haha! See you later.
Yamaguchi and Tsukishima walk back to their classroom before they could even get caught by their homeroom adviser.
Yamaguchi
Well, that was easy.

I had a feeling if she wasn't interested, she would've said no immediately.

Why are you so worked up about this? Your grades are fine.
Yamaguchi
I want them to play.
Before entering their own, they catch a glimpse of Kageyama and Hinata entering their respective classrooms.
Yamaguchi
And... Y/N! Are you kidding me?

2 years and we're this close to becoming her friends!
Morning classes passed by and it was finally lunch break. On the school ground where gazebos are made available for the students to utilize, Y/N quietly eats her lunch while reading a novel.
Tsukishima
Walk up to her.
Yamaguchi
What? No, you go first.
Tsukishima
You came up with this idea.
Yamaguchi
But she's scary.
Tsukishima
She's just reading!
Y/N shoots her head up and looks back at the two who were a few feet behind her.
Yamaguchi

So, um, what do you want to know more about the thing earlier?
Kageyama
Will you stop shouting?
Hinata stops and stares at Y/N curiously.

The hair is... kind of a giveaway.

Tsukishima
What are you doing here? Aren't you always at the court during break?
Kageyama
The dance team booked it. They're training extra hard this year.

So we came to have lunch with you!

Y/N places her bag next to her on the floor.

You can sit beside me, Hinata.
Hinata
Well! That's so nice of you!

And Yamaguchi here made you out to be-- mmph.
Yamaguchi covers Hinata's mouth with his palm.

Don't worry! It isn't anything serious.

They saw you talking to Yachi, and I kind of told them who you were.

That *points at Hinata* is a walking talking bomb. Once you're in a conversation with him, it'll feel like years before it ends.
Hinata
This is why you don't have other friends.
Tsukishima
And that *points at Kageyama* is a milk-obsessed lunatic that has the emotional range of a teaspoon.
Kageyama
Tch. Says the guy who's the embodiment of salt.
Y/N
And what about you, Tsukishima?
Y/N
Do you think there are parts of you that'll make me regret making your acquaintance?
Yamaguchi
*whispers* Aw, acquaintance.
Tsukishima
I'm the sanest person on the team.
Y/N

Tsukishima

All right, that's enough.
Yamaguchi
So, Y/N-san, are you considering it?

Mmm, I'll find time to tutor you guys.
Kageyama's eyes were suddenly filled with life upon hearing this.
Y/N
But I can't do it before training. You guys will have to cover that, Yamaguchi and Tsukishima.
Y/N
I'll be at our club room right after class, but I will be dismissed earlier. I can catch up with you at the court.
Kageyama
Campaign and advocacies committee, right?
The three boys furrowed their eyebrows at the sudden reply.
Hinata
How'd you know that?
Kageyama
Her face is in the bulletin board by the stairs on the second floor.
Hinata
What do you do there, Y/N-san?
Y/N
Community work mostly...
Hinata
Cool! You get to hang out with people outside the school!
Yamaguchi
*nudges Tsukki* Isn't she amazing?
Tsukishima
So when can you start?
Y/N
Later, I'll meet you at the court.
Yamaguchi
I thought you'd be at your club room?

Mhm, I'm going straight to you guys after meeting.
Yamaguchi
But we'll still be practicing...?
The lunch bell rang. Students start to walk back to their rooms. Y/N grabs her bag and stands up.
Y/N
That's why I was talking to, Yachi-san.
Y/N
I'll be taking notes on you guys for research.
With that, Y/N makes a sly smile. She walks off leaving the bewildered boys at the gazebo.
Hinata
IS SHE A SCIENTIST OR SOMETHING?
Hinata
ARE WE HER LABRATS?
Hinata
IS LIFE JUST A SIMULATION?
Kageyama
Boke, you're too noisy.
The boys got up to walk back to the building, when Kageyama notices a book on the place where Y/N had sat on.
Kageyama
Forgot your book.
Kageyama
Then give it to her.
Tsukishima
Eh? Are we your servants?
Tsukishima
Hand too heavy to hold a book?
Hinata
Just hand it to her at practice.
During class, Kageyama examines the book he picked up. He opened it and a bookmark fell off.
On the bookmark were beautifully written words: We tend to accept what is already presented to us, but it never hurts to ask for more.

I think Kageyama needs to attend a Philosophy class or two.

Chapter 3: The Starting Line
Yachi
Y/N-san! I'll head off now. See you later.
Y/N walks calmly to her own club room only to find two of the members from her year. They had suddenly stopped talking when she arrived.
Student #1
Y/N-san, have you finished the project proposals for this year?
Y/N
Yes, but I'll still need the budget proposals to go along with it.
Student #2
Why don't you start on it yourself?
Student #1
We'll need it by Friday.
Student #2
Well, we're off to buy supplies for the welcome party.
The two girls left abruptly. Y/N didn't get a chance to object to the sudden assignment. She shakes it off and massages her temples.
Y/N
Well, I guess that's it for the meeting.
Y/N found her way to the gym the Boys Volleyball Club were using, but there was a tall figure blocking the entrance.
Asahi
Hmm? Oh, sorry. Are you a new manager?
Y/N
I just came to see Yamaguchi.
Asahi paused and didn't react. He was wondering if Y/N was Yamaguchi's girlfriend. Y/N noticed he was a familiar face.
Asahi
Oh, you can just call me Asahi!
Nishinoya
ASAHI! WHAT ARE YOU STANDING AROUND AT THE DOOR FOR? LET'S CRITIQUE THIS LOT!
Nishinoya comes over to hug you. The BVC turns their heads to this commotion.
Tsukishima
Were they always close?
Yamaguchi
I'm... not sure.
Hinata
Oh? Y/N! You're early!
Y/N
It was quite a quick meeting.
Nishinoya
Have you applied to become a manager?
Nishinoya
You'd be perfect!

No, they needed a tutor.
Asahi

Y/N settles down with her things upstairs. She can see the whole gym from up there. As Asahi was just about to go down, Kageyama was climbing up.
He hands her the book she left during lunch.

Oh, thanks. I was wondering if somebody else had picked it up.
Kageyama
Tsk, be careful with your things next time.
Kageyama throws a small box of milk to Y/N.
Kageyama
That's for you. You might get thirsty while you're up here.
Kageyama
Kageyama, by the way.
Kageyama runs down to start warming up. Y/N watches their practice from above as she promised.
Y/N
Tsukishima can improve on receiving.
Y/N
Hinata's jump is phenomenal.
Y/N
Kageyama's set is... weirdly accurate.
Y/N writes down all her notes. She wasn't kidding when she said she's doing her research.
Nishinoya
You did it, huh?

Good thing it was approved.
Y/N
It's not like teachers can say no to me, you know.

You two laugh, making the BVC below look up.

All right, ten laps jogging before cleaning up. Let's go!

You climb down with Nishinoya right behind you.
Nishinoya
Asahi, are you seeing these slackers? Tell them off!
Asahi
They don't have your stamina.
Yachi
Did you get good points for your notes today, Y/N?

I think so. I might need to interview some of them.

You look over to the boys who had finished jogging. Yamaguchi was trying to get Hinata away from Kageyama who was picking a fight with Tsukishima.
Asahi
It's like we never left.

Oi, cut that off. Y/N can see you. Don't make fools of yourselves,
Yamaguchi
So Y/N, let's go?
After cleaning up and changing their clothes, they head off to the BVC coach's store for their first tutoring session.
It was a chaotic first session with Tsukishima roasting Hinata and Kageyama and Yamaguchi trying to calm them all down.
Yamaguchi
I'm sorry they're so noisy.
Y/N
I'm sorry you have to deal with it everyday,
Tsukishima
That's it for tonight, right? I'm heading home.
Hinata
Y/N! You're so good at English!
Y/N

Hinata

Tsukishima, Yamaguchi, and Hinata leave the store. Y/N goes round back to pick and buy some snacks.
Y/N steps out of the store with the snacks in her hands when she sees Kageyama sitting on the pavement.

Nice work today. See you tomorrow.
Kageyama looked uneasy. His face was slowly turning red but Y/N couldn't see clearly in the dark street.
Kageyama
...walk together.
For some reason, Kageyama didn't know where to place his hands. He kept moving it around. From his pockets, to his neck, to his waist. Finally, he spoke.
Kageyama
Did you finish the milk I gave you?
Y/N
Yes. I did get thirsty.
Y/N
Thanks again, but you don't really have to buy me anything next time.
As they were nearing the corner where Y/N and Kageyama were supposed to separate, Y/N recognizes two voices from afar.
Student #1
I'm still not warming up to her.
Student #2
Y/N's just got a superiority complex, that's all.
Student #1
I don't like it, but we have to keep working with her.
Y/N stopped walking before she could even be seen. She grabs Kageyama by his jacket and pulls him behind a wall of a store nearby.
Kageyama
Oi! What are you--
Student #2
We could just leave the committee, you know.
Student #1
We're the only three seniors. The freshmen don't know anything about the projects.
Student #2
Exactly. Leave the hard work to Y/N.
Student #1
I can't just leave. I need this on my resume.
Student #2
Then let's just give all the paperwork to her.
But the two girls just laugh. Y/N knew they were going to do it anyway.
Meanwhile, Kageyama was frozen at the fact that he was so close to Y/N. She was still holding his jacket, so his chin almost touches her forehead.
Y/N lets go of his jacket and regains her composure.
Kageyama
Hey, were they...?
Y/N
People from the committee that were planning on leaving me? Yeah. Yeah, they were.
Y/N
No, I'm sorry for snapping.
Y/N
I think I'm getting tired.
Kageyama
How come you and Nishinoya-san are close?
Y/N
Hmm? Oh, I interviewed him for an essay in Literature last year.
Y/N
He was really nice. Treated me to ice cream afterwards.
They were now at the corner where they would go the opposite directions.
Y/N
Well, this is where I'm headed. Goodbye.
Kageyama
Can we... have lunch together again tomorow?
Kageyama
I need to work on Japanese.
Kageyama watches Y/N as she turns around and walks to the opposite end of the street. When her figure had gone, he walked to his house with a small smile.
Y/N lied down on her bad, exhausted. She rummages her bag for her notes when she pulls out the book she was reading.
She pulls out the bookmark inside and with it was a small piece of paper with the words: You have nice handwriting.
