STRANGER BOY:THE SHADOW DATE

CHAPTER ONE:PEST CONTROL

The tires of the sedan crunched over the gravel as Mellisa drove past the weathered wooden sign that read "WELCOME TO HAMLET." It was October 28, 1991, but the crisp autumn air felt heavy with a silence that had lasted for miles. Beside her, fifteen-year-old Lisa stared out the window, her face partially obscured by a clinical mask. She hadn’t spoken since they left their old life behind.

"Honey, I promise you, Hamlet will be a fresh start," Mellisa said, her voice pleading for a crack in her daughter's armor. Lisa didn't move. "Baby, please say something. What happened to your Dad... it wasn't our fault, okay?"

Lisa turned sharply, her eyes burning with a cold, sharp fury above the edge of her mask. "Yeah, whatever," she muttered.

Mellisa’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. "What is that supposed to mean, huh?"

"It means it’s your fault," Lisa snapped, her voice trembling with rage. "You fucked our family."

"Language, young lady!" Mellisa shouted, her face flushing.

Lisa let out a jagged, angry laugh. "Language? Is that what you’re concerned about? I just want you to accept that you’re wrong. You fucked up our family for the first time in your life!"

"You know what? You’re grounded," Mellisa yelled, her eyes leaving the road to glare at her daughter. "You won’t go anywhere. You’ll stay home and learn how to speak to your mother!"

"You selfish bitch!" Lisa screamed. She lunged toward the steering wheel, grabbing at her mother’s arms in a desperate, frantic struggle. The car swerved violently, the tires losing their grip on the pavement before the world dissolved into the deafening crunch of metal and shattering glass.

As the dust settled on the wreckage, a figure emerged from the treeline. He walked with a hitching, unnatural gait, his skin blackened and charred like a walking corpse—a zombie born of fire. Mellisa, pinned and bleeding, fought through the haze of a concussion to shield her daughter, but the creature was relentless. He lunged forward, his teeth sinking into Mellisa’s shoulder. As the world turned black for her, the man gathered the unconscious Lisa into his arms and disappeared into the dark woods of Hamlet.

By November 21, the air in Hamlet had turned bitter. Rose found herself standing in the middle of the Brickwall Mall, but the shops were empty and the lights flickered with a dying hum. Her skin began to itch—a deep, rhythmic throb. She looked down in horror as thick, green veins pulsed beneath her flesh, threatening to burst through the surface.

Suddenly, Andy appeared, stumbling toward her with blood slicking his clothes. Rose stood frozen, her legs heavy as lead.

"You are a pest, Rose," Andy hissed, his voice echoing. "A unique type of pest. And you broke your vow."

Rose screamed as the shadows shifted, revealing the pale, bloodied forms of IZ and her dead stepbrother, Jacob. They moved toward her with accusatory stares.

"Why do you get to live while we die?" Jacob asked, his voice dripping with venom. "You are a curse, Rose."

"I thought we were friends," IZ whispered, her eyes hollow. "But you left me to die."

"Please," Rose sobbed, clutching her head. "Please forgive me."

"Pest. Pest. Pest," they chanted in a terrifying unison. "You will die and go to hell, bitch!"

Rose bolted upright in bed, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her room was quiet, the moonlight filtering through the blinds. It was just a nightmare, but the phantom itch in her veins remained.

Down at the Hamlet Police Station, Fabio paced the floor of the lobby. He needed to see the Chief, but Scott stood in his way, leaning against a desk with a smug expression.

"What can’t you understand, man?" Scott said. "The Chief is out of town."

Fabio stepped into Scott’s space, his voice low and urgent. "Look, I know you hate me, okay? But this is getting out of hand."

Scott let out a sarcastic bark of a laugh. "Oh, let me guess. Is there a Russian or Spanish conspiracy going on again? Just like what happened at the mall three weeks ago?"

Disgusted, Fabio turned on his heel and stormed out of the station.

At Hamlet High School, the morning sun did little to cheer the mood. Rose dropped her bicycle by the racks and marched toward Apollo, Owen, and Kevin. A new student, Ruth, was standing with them.

"Guys, where’s Charles?" Rose demanded.

Apollo leaned back, crossing his arms. "Well, well, well. Look who finally decided to show up."

"Yeah, good morning to you too, Rosey," Kevin added.

Owen, however, noticed the tremble in her hands. "Guys, stop. Rose, what is wrong?"

"I need to talk to you guys at the Trog Centre," Rose said, her eyes darting around the hallway. As they started to move, Ruth followed. Rose stopped and turned, her gaze icy. "Trog party members only!"

Ruth scoffed, looking hurt. "What? I played Trog too."

"Umm, like once, right?" Rose snapped. "So stay!"

While the group headed for their sanctuary, Fabio arrived at the Hugo residence. He found Sarah sitting outside on the porch, her eyes fixed on the distance. She looked fragile.

"Thank God, Sarah," Fabio said, approaching her. "I need to talk to you about John." When she didn't answer, he sat beside her in concern. "Hey, what is wrong?"

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears. "Nothing. It’s just... tomorrow is November 22nd. That’s the day that changed my son forever. And now he’s got a fever." She broke down, and Fabio pulled her into a protective hug.

Across town, Maria sat in the Thompson home. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, the grieving parents of her dead friend Laura, looked at her with a mixture of gratitude and sorrow.

"Thank you, Maria, for accepting to tutor Norah," Mrs. Thompson said.

Maria offered a small, sad smile. "Please don’t, Ma. She’s my sister too."

Mr. Thompson shook his head. "Seeing you do this makes me sad about Laura. I mean, if that lazy son of a bitch Chief had done something better, Laura would still be alive." The room fell into an uncomfortable silence. "Maria, you can go in. She’s inside," Mrs. Thompson said, nodding toward the hallway.

Back at the Trog Centre, Rose paced the small room as she recounted her dream to Apollo, Owen, and Kevin.

"It’s like the Swamp Knight veins are inside my skin," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I saw Jacob, Andy, and IZ. They were so upset with me. That’s why I need to see Charles."

"But—but why?" Owen asked.

"I need to protect him because the date is approaching," Rose replied.

"Protect him how?" Apollo challenged. "You’re the one who needs protection."

Kevin frowned. "And which date are you talking about?"

Rose looked at them, her eyes wide with fear. "November 29. The day that marks exactly one year since Charles's kidnapping."

The weight of the date hit them all at once. Meanwhile, deep in the woods, Fabio and Sarah stood over a gruesome scene. Three corpses lay tangled in the undergrowth, their bodies shredded by savage bite marks.

"I don’t want to believe it, Sarah, but last night..." Fabio trailed off, his face pale. "Me and these three people were hiking when a man showed up—all burnt. He started biting them like an animal. I was able to escape, but I think it’s that cult group of cannibalism." Sarah stared at the bodies, her breath hitching in shock.

The group of friends emerged from the Trog Centre, walking with a sense of urgent purpose. Ruth was waiting for them in the hallway and tried to fall in step. "Is everything okay with Charles?" she asked.

They ignored her, but Rose finally spun around, her patience gone. "Stop being nosey in our affairs and go home, new girl!" she yelled. Ruth stood frozen as Rose walked away, leaving the new student alone in the hall.

At the Thompson house, Maria sat across from fifteen-year-old Norah. A math textbook lay open between them, but Norah wasn't looking at the numbers. She was staring directly at Maria.

"You were with my sister the night she died, right?" Norah asked.

Maria froze. "Norah, what are you saying?"

"I’m saying you killed Laura," Norah said, her voice rising as she began to sob. "And now I am living like a stupid loser. You took the one person that made me feel alive in this world." As Norah cried, a wave of intense dizziness washed over Maria, the room beginning to spin.

Miles away, in the sterile, cold environment of the Hamlet Laboratory, IZ’s eyes fluttered open. She was strapped to a table, and a man stood over her. He went by the name MK ULTRA.

"Hello, Isabella," he said calmly.

IZ blinked, her mind a complete blank. No memories, no name, no past. "Who... who are you?" she whispered, before the darkness claimed her once again.

CHAPTER TWO:HUNGER GAMES

The memory hit IZ like a physical blow, taking her back to October 28, 1985. MK Ultra stood in a cold, mirrored room surrounded by seven children, their ages ranging from seven to ten. Each child’s head was shaved. There were four boys and three girls, but IZ was nowhere to be seen.

"Good morning, kids," MK Ultra announced.

"Good morning, Master!" the children replied in chilling unison.

"It is almost time to finish our biggest experiment," he said. "After breakfast, we begin."

"Yes, Master."

"Subject Two, follow me."

A young boy stepped forward and followed MK Ultra through the facility. They passed row after row of rooms until they reached the door marked "Subject One"—IZ’s room. They continued past it into MK Ultra’s private office.

"Now, Subject Two, I want to test you," MK Ultra said. "Find me the nurses."

The boy nodded and closed his eyes. Moments later, the high-pitched wail of an emergency alarm tore through the building.

"Subject Two, what is going on out there?"

The boy opened his eyes, wide with terror. "She is killing them, Master."

Before MK Ultra could react, the office door was ripped from its hinges. The force knocked him unconscious. When he finally came to, he gasped. Subject Two lay nearby, his neck twisted at an impossible angle.

MK Ultra stumbled back to the mirror room. It was a slaughterhouse. The guards and the other six children were all dead, their necks snapped just like Subject Two's. In the center of the room stood Subject One. The ten-year-old IZ stood fuming with rage, her hands raised toward a final guard. With a flick of her wrists, the guard’s neck twisted, and he fell limp.

"What have you done?" MK Ultra groaned in horror. "What have you done?!"

IZ collapsed to the floor, and the vision ended.

Night had fallen by the time Apollo, Kevin, Owen, and Rose arrived at the Hugos' residence. As they dropped their bicycles, Rose’s eyes suddenly went vacant. She saw Jacob standing before her, a knife buried in his chest.

"You think you can protect somebody?" Jacob’s voice was a demonic growl. "When you couldn't even protect your own stepbrother?"

"No, Jacob, I’m sorry!" Rose sobbed. "I want to stop it!"

"If you want to stop it, then let me kill you," Jacob sneered. "Oh, wait—you want to save him because you love the boy, right?"

Rose’s skin began to pulse with a sickly green hue.

"I don't love him! No, please, Jacob! He’s my friend!"

"Admit you love Charles, you bitch!" Jacob screamed.

"I DON'T LOVE CHARLES!" Rose shrieked at the top of her lungs.

The vision snapped. She was back in the driveway, shaking and crying. Owen, Apollo, and Kevin stared at her, paralyzed by shock.

In the woods, Fabio checked his surroundings nervously. "Where is John? He needs to see this."

"He went to Russia," Sarah replied, her voice trembling. "Fabio, report this to the police."

"They aren't listening to me, Sarah! When will John be back?"

Suddenly, the burnt man stepped from behind a tree, staring at them with glazed eyes.

"Sarah," Fabio whispered. "That’s the guy who bit my friends."

"Run!" Sarah screamed.

They bolted through the undergrowth, the humanoid creature hot on their heels.

At the Hamlet Department of Energy, IZ sat across from MK Ultra. Her memories were still fractured; the only thing she could grasp was the horrific vision of the laboratory massacre.

"Why did I kill them?" IZ asked through tears. "Am I a bad person? Is that why I can't remember who I was?"

"We all have memories, Isabella—bad and good," MK Ultra said smoothly. "What you saw was a buried memory. A bad one. Now, get some rest. We will help you recover the rest starting tomorrow."

IZ nodded slowly, though her heart remained heavy.

At the Thompson home, the tension between mother and daughter had reached a breaking point.

"I told you to stop pushing people away and start accepting who you are," Mrs. Thompson said firmly.

"Who I am?" Norah shouted. "Who I am is someone with a disease!"

"Stop it. You don't have that. Now, sleep."

Mrs. Thompson walked out, leaving Norah to collapse onto her bed in a fit of heavy sobbing.

Back in the woods, Fabio had become separated from Sarah during the chase. He stumbled through the dark, frantic. "Sarah! Sarah, are you okay? Where are you?"

At the Hugos', the group was gathered around David.

"Just come clean with me," David insisted. "Tell me what’s going on."

"The Swamp Knight," Rose whispered. "I think it’s back."

"And we're expecting the worst," Owen added. "It cursed Rose."

David listened in stunned silence as they detailed Rose’s terrifying episodes.

"That is why we need to see Charles," Apollo said.

"We’ve fought this evil before," Kevin added. "It’s back. We need to know why."

In his bedroom, Charles lay fast asleep. He began to dream of Sarah, hearing her screams as she tried to escape the humanoid creature in the woods. In the dream, he saw Fabio arrive, firing his gun at the creature until it fled into the darkness.

Charles bolted upright in bed, drenched in sweat and gasping for air.

Miles away in the woods, the dream was a reality. Fabio had found Sarah just in time, driving the creature off with his weapon. Exhausted and terrified, they climbed into the car and drove away into the night.

CHAPTER THREE:BLOODLINE

The morning of November 22nd brought no relief, only the lingering chill of a waking nightmare.

Charles found himself trapped within the confines of a sterile, blindingly white room. Every wall was a mirror, reflecting his own terror back at him from every angle. Standing in the center of the room was his father, Jace.

"Today is the day, son," Jace said, his voice echoing coldly against the glass. "The day that you were free."

Tears welled in Charles’s eyes, spilling down his cheeks.

But Jace’s expression twisted, stripping away any fleeting sense of comfort. "You can never be free, son. You are a messed up kid. A broken one."

Charles recoiled in shock. Before his eyes, Jace’s flesh began to decay, his features warping and melting until he transformed into a grotesque, humanoid, zombie-like creature.

"You are not real!" Charles screamed, backing away.

The creature lunged forward, its dead hands clamping tightly around Charles’s neck, cutting off his air supply.

"Some minds, it turns out, simply do not belong in this world," the creature hissed, its voice a terrifying blend of Jace’s tone and a deep, demonic growl.

Charles choked and coughed, clawing desperately at the suffocating grip.

"You will break and die, Charles Hugo!"

With a gasp, Charles bolted upright in his bed, the phantom pressure still burning around his throat. His chest heaved as he looked around his room, the morning light filtering through the window convincing him, finally, that it had only been a nightmare.

Across town, Maria sat at a table with Norah, trying to guide her through the morning's lessons. But Norah was entirely checked out, her eyes staring blankly into space, lost in the shadows of her own mind.

Sensing her distress, Maria reached out and gently touched her arm. "Hey, you're okay?"

Norah flinched slightly, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked up. "Can I tell you a secret? Please don't tell my mum and dad."

Maria offered a warm, reassuring smile. "It'll be our little secret, Norah. Tell me."

Downtown in the Hugo residence, Charles sat in a daze. Owen and Kevin entered the room, their faces etched with concern.

"Charles, are you okay?" Owen asked, stepping closer.

Charles gave a tight, nervous nod, unable to find his words.

"Yesterday you passed out," Kevin added. "Your mum and David were really worried."

The door opened again, and Sarah, David, and Fabio walked in. The heavy silence in the room broke as Charles finally opened up, his voice trembling as he recounted the horrific details of the nightmares that had been plaguing him.

Meanwhile, over at Rose’s house, Apollo arrived to meet her. He found her pacing, a tense energy radiating from her.

"I am ready," Rose said sharply, grabbing her things. "We should go now."

Apollo stood up from his seat, but he didn't move toward the door. Instead, he looked at her intently. "So... you're in love with Charles."

Rose froze, her face flushed with shock. "What are you talking about?"

Apollo gave a small, sad smile. "I am not upset with you because you chose Charles over me. But last night... we heard you shout it out."

Anger flashed in Rose’s eyes, deflecting the sudden vulnerability. "So—let me get this straight. The world is basically falling apart, and this is what you're worried about?"

"No, I—" Apollo started, trying to defend himself.

"Let's go already!" Rose snapped, cutting him off.

Apollo nodded quietly. They wheeled their bicycles outside, mounted them, and rode away into the morning air.

In the quiet confines of Maria’s car, the atmosphere was thick with unease. Norah sat in the passenger seat, tears streaming down her face as she opened up about the terrors in her mind.

"I know something is wrong with me, but my parents don't want to believe me," Norah sobbed. Maria listened, a profound sadness washing over her. "I used to have this weird dream... of this zombie-looking creature hunting and biting people. And this... this red world."

Maria’s breath caught in her throat. A chill ran down her spine as the realization hit her.

Back at the Hugos', Sarah was intentionally keeping her own terrifying experiences from the previous night a secret from the children.

"It's all a nightmare, Charles," Sarah insisted, her voice steady despite the lie. "This is not the Grabber, or the Swamp Knight."

Fabio stepped up to support her, nodding in agreement. "Your mom is right, kid. If it were them, you could have felt his presence through your eyes, right?"

Charles ran a hand over his face, letting out a breath. "Yeah... maybe you guys are right."

Kevin frowned, crossing his arms. "I don't believe that. What about Rose's episodes?"

"No, Kevin," Owen argued, trying to keep the panic at bay. "If it were something that serious, the monster would have showed up by now, right?"

As the boys debated, Sarah and Fabio caught each other's gaze across the room, a shared, silent terror passing between them.

Near Rose’s house, Rose suddenly slammed her brakes. She spotted Ruth skulking through the shadows, trying to hide in their backyard. Rose and Apollo dropped their bicycles onto the grass and marched over to confront her. Ruth was trembling, beads of sweat breaking out on her forehead.

"Ruth, what are you doing here?" Apollo demanded.

"Stalking me, of course," Rose said, her voice dripping with venom.

"No... no!" Ruth stammered, raising her hands defensively. "I saw Apollo's bike, and I just... I wanted to come ask about Charles."

Rose’s glare didn't soften. "You lying piece of shit. Why are you here?"

"Rose, please," Apollo pleaded, trying to de-escalate the tension.

Rose let out an angry sigh, turning on her heel. "I am out of here."

Without looking back, Rose hopped onto her bike and sped away. Apollo turned back to the trembling girl. "Hop on," he told Ruth. "I'm going to Charles’s place."

A relieved smile broke across Ruth’s face. She quickly climbed onto the back of Apollo's bicycle, and they rode off together.

Later that day, David walked out to meet Maria at her car. Inside, Norah had finally cried herself to sleep, her small form curled up in the seat. David leaned over and anxiously relayed the details of Charles’s nightmare to Maria.

Maria’s eyes widened. "Oh my God, David. This is exactly what Norah told me she saw in her dream. A zombie-looking man hunting people."

David stared at her, his mind racing. "What are you thinking?"

A grim smirk crossed Maria’s face. "The library."

Without another word, Maria started the engine and threw the car into drive.

Inside Fabio’s house, the front door clicked shut. Fabio turned to Sarah, his voice low and demanding.

"Why did you lie to the kids?"

Sarah sank into a chair, the stoic mask she had worn earlier completely shattering, leaving only raw fear. "I don't want them to get involved. I don't want to lose another child like I lost IZ. I want us to find and kill that thing by ourselves."

Fabio looked at her, the weight of her words sinking in, filling him with a quiet dread.

Back at the Hugo residence, Rose, Ruth, and Apollo arrived. They walked into the house to find Charles, Owen, and Kevin waiting. The moment Ruth saw Charles, she bypassed everyone else and threw her arms around him in a tight hug.

The room went completely still. Everyone stared in surprise.

"I am so glad you're okay," Ruth whimpered, holding onto him. "I was worried. I thought that thing got you again."

Rose’s temper flared instantly. She marched over, grabbed Ruth, and pulled her away with a harsh yank. "Get away from him, you monster!"

The room erupted into shocked protests.

"Rose, it's no big deal, please," Charles pleaded.

"Yes, what the hell, Rose?" Owen yelled.

Apollo stepped between them. "Why'd you call her a monster?"

Rose pointed a shaking finger at Ruth. "How does she know that Charles got something on himself?"

At the library, the glowing green hue of an old computer screen illuminated Maria and David's faces. With Norah still asleep out in the car, they frantically searched through old digital newspaper archives, tracking down articles on cannibalism and local zombie sightings.

David shook his head, leaning back. "This is so meaningless, Maria. It's all pranks and false alarms."

Maria kept scrolling, her eyes scanning the text. "Melissa Krull claimed her daughter was taken by a zombie man who bit her and took her daughter."

David let out a nervous laugh. "Hahaha, really funny, babe."

"Dude, I am serious," Maria said, her tone deadpan. "Come on and check it out."

David sighed and leaned over her shoulder, reading the article from the previous month detailing Melissa's terrifying account. His smile vanished. "Oh my God... and the scary part is that name."

Maria met his gaze. "The Krull family." They looked at each other, fear settling deep in their chests.

Deep in the woods, the shadows were lengthening. Sarah and Fabio moved through the dense undergrowth, shotguns gripped tightly in their hands, knives sheathed at their belts. They kept their eyes peeled for any sign of the creature.

"This is not working," Sarah whispered, her nerves fraying. "I don't see anything."

"Don't give up yet," Fabio urged, pointing through the trees. "Let's search that barn over there."

Positioned in a clearing ahead was an old, dilapidated barn, its roof and walls heavily covered in overgrown leaves and vines.

Back inside the Hugo house, the interrogation continued.

Ruth shrank back, her voice trembling. "I... I... I followed you to the trog room that day."

"Liar," Rose snapped. "Are you stalking us?"

"Please, Rose," Ruth begged, tears forming. "I just wanted to be part of you guys. Nothing else."

Charles looked at the crying girl, then at Rose. "Rose, let's just tell her, right?"

Rose let out a sharp sigh of pure frustration. Unable to stand it anymore, she turned and stormed out of the house. Owen gave Charles a quick look before running out after her.

Sitting in Maria’s idling car, David and Maria weighed their very limited options.

"John is out of town," David said flatly. "How are we gonna find her files?"

Maria gripped the steering wheel. "Let's break into the station."

David’s jaw dropped. "Really? Are you nuts, Maria? We can't do that."

Maria turned to him, her eyes fierce. "So we should just stay quiet and let this thing hurt Charles and Norah?"

David held her gaze for a long moment, the internal battle raging before he finally succumbed. "Screw it. Let's do it." A smirk played on Maria’s lips as David added, "But we have to take the master key at my house."

Maria nodded quickly and hit the gas.

Night had completely fallen over the woods. Quietly, Fabio and Sarah slipped through the broken wooden doors of the old barn. The beams of their flashlights illuminated horrific crimson stains splattered across the floor and walls.

As they searched deeper, they uncovered a hidden door. Fabio stepped close, his breath hitched as he pulled it open. Beyond the threshold lay a steep flight of stone staircases leading down into pitch blackness.

Suddenly, a blood-curdling roar echoed from outside the barn.

Sarah froze, her grip tightening on her shotgun. "What is that?" she asked, terror leaking into her voice.

They crept toward the entrance and peered out into the dark trees. The creature was there, moving with unnatural, jerky movements, sniffing the air. It turned its head toward their location and began stalking directly toward the barn.

Outside the Hugo house, Rose sat alone on the steps, gazing up at the stars in silent sadness. Hearing footsteps, she looked up to see Owen joining her. She managed a small smile.

"I know you all think I am the bad person here, and Ruth isn't," Rose said softly.

"Of course not, Rose," Owen replied gently. "She is not part of us, but you are our friend." Rose’s smile widened slightly. "I know Ruth might be nosey, but you don't think she's a host like Jacob or Andy, right?"

"I don't know, Owen," Rose sighed, looking back at the sky. "I've seen her close to my house countless times, but I just ignored it. Why is she obsessed with me?" Owen just smiled warmly. "I just want to protect Charles. Now that IZ is not here, he has no one except us—his friends."

Owen’s expression turned emotional, a flash of grief crossing his features as he remembered IZ’s smile. "Never leave a friend behind."

They shook hands, a silent pact sealed between them, and Owen turned to walk away.

But as Rose watched him go, her eyes widened in horror. Another Owen was stepping out from the thick bushes directly ahead of her.

"It isn't the whole truth, is it, Rose?" the second Owen spoke, his voice shifting into a distorted, demonic cadence. "You never cared for anyone except for yourself."

Rose scrambled backward, standing up in pure terror. "No... No... Owen..."

The demonic Owen stepped closer, his eyes hollow and dark. "I see you crying each night, wishing to be dead like Jacob. That is why I am here... to grant you your wish, Rose."

Rose let out a piercing scream.

Suddenly, the illusion shattered. David and Maria’s car slammed to a halt in the driveway, and they hurried out, carrying a sleeping Norah. Rose blinked, gasping for air as she realized she had just survived another horrific episode.

Inside, Ruth emerged from the bathroom, sweating profusely and pale. Apollo noticed her state but chose to ignore it, unwilling to start another argument.

But before anyone could speak, the night air was shattered by a deafening roar. The creature materialized out of the darkness with terrifying speed. Before anyone could react, it lunged forward, snatched Norah from their grasp, and sprinted back into the shadows. The group screamed, trying desperately to give chase, but the beast was too fast, vanishing into the night.

At that exact moment, inside the barn, the creature broke through the entrance, lunging directly at Fabio.

Sarah raised her shotgun and fired, the blast hitting it squarely in the head. The creature staggered, but it didn't die; it kept coming, snarling through its wounds. Reacting on pure instinct, Fabio swung his cutlass with all his might, cleanly chopping off the creature's head.

The beast collapsed into a lifeless heap. Dropping her weapon, a crying Sarah collapsed into Fabio's arms, and he held her tightly against the darkness
