Silk & Sledgehammers
chapter 0: Character introduction
The Hook (The "Blurb" for Readers)
"One lives by the law; the other lives by the heart. One builds empires of glass; the other builds a home out of flour and salt. In a city that never sleeps, four men are about to find out that the most dangerous thing you can do... is let someone in."
The Character Introduction– Meet the men of 'Sourdough and Silk Ties'.
Elias Thorne (ML). The lawyer with a frozen heart. “Everything has a price, Mr. Adam. I’m just here to find yours.”
Age: 31
Occupation: Senior Corporate Lawyer / Executor of the Thorne-Gable Estate.
Appearance: Tall (6'2"), olive skin tone, sharp-edged features, and striking grey eyes.
Always seen in tailored navy or charcoal three-piece suits. Hair is dark, sleek, and perfectly parted.
Personality: Cold, calculated, and highly disciplined. He values efficiency above all else and has a "killer" reputation in the courtroom. He views emotions as a liability.
Internal Secret: He’s burnt out and lonely, but he doesn't know how to exist without a "goal" to achieve.
Ivan Adam (MC). The baker who refuses to break. “This shop isn’t for sale. Not today, not ever.”
Age: 27
Occupation: Head Baker and Owner of "Gable’s Hearth."
Appearance: Athletic and broad-shouldered from physical labor. Soft, dark hair that often falls over his eyes. He has a small, meaningful tattoo on the side of his neck and usually wears hoodies or aprons with the sleeves rolled up.
Personality: Grounded, stubborn, and deeply loyal. He is a man of few words but has a "warm" presence. He’s observant and can read people's true intentions better than Elias can.
Internal Secret: He feels the heavy weight of his grandmother’s legacy and is terrified of failing the community that relies on him.
Edward Sterling (2nd ML). The architect of the future. “Beauty is in the blueprint. Everything else is just... clutter.”
Age: 29
Occupation: Lead Architect for the Vane Development Firm.
Appearance: Sophisticated and modern. He wears high-end leather jackets, designer glasses, and black gloves. His look is "Dark Academia" meets "High Fashion."
Personality: Perfectionist, arrogant, and highly intelligent. He views buildings as art and people as obstacles. He finds Zayn's "unpolished" nature infuriating—and intoxicating.
Internal Secret: He’s a "black sheep" in a wealthy family and feels constant pressure to prove he is the best, leading to a hidden, high-stress lifestyle.
Zayn Raven (2nd MC). The protector with a dark past. “Touch him, and you’ll find out why they call me Raven.”
Age: 28
Occupation: Mechanic, Fixer, and General Manager of the Bakery.
Appearance: Lean and rugged with an "edgy" look (Image: dark turtleneck/cigarette vibe). Sharp, piercing gaze and messy dark hair. He has a silver heart earring and a rebellious posture.
Personality: Blunt, cynical, and fiercely protective of Ivan. He doesn't trust anyone "polished." He uses sarcasm as a weapon and is never seen without a scowl—until he's alone.
Internal Secret: He has a "troubled" past involving the law, and the bakery was the only place that gave him a second chance. He would burn the world down for Ivan.
Sarah Jenkins
Age: 26
Occupation: Elias’s Personal Legal Assistant.
Appearance: Always "perfect." Pencil skirts, crisp blouses, and hair in a tight, professional bun. Her makeup is flawless to hide the dark circles from working late.
Personality: Devoted, efficient, and quietly suffering. She is the "gatekeeper" to Elias’s life. She is brilliant but lacks the confidence to stand up for her own heart.
Internal Conflict: She is trapped in an arranged marriage set by her socially ambitious parents. She loves Elias, but she realizes she is just a "tool" in his professional life.
Marcus Vane
Occupation: CEO of Vane Development & Acquisitions | Elias’s Mentor.
Age: 52.
Appearance: A master of "Silver Fox" sophistication. He has impeccably groomed silver hair and sharp, icy blue eyes. He favors custom-tailored white blazers and silk vests that highlight his "old money" status. He carries a heavy, intimidating presence even when sitting still.
Personality: Ruthless, narcissistic, and highly intelligent. He views empathy as a weakness and people as mere chess pieces to be moved or sacrificed. He is a master of the "polite threat"—he never needs to raise his voice to make someone tremble.
Vibe: The ultimate corporate villain. He doesn't just want the land; he wants to break anyone who dares to say "no" to him.
Chapter one: The weight of gold
Gable’s Hearth Bakery. 5:00 AM. The air is thick with the scent of yeast and the low hum of the industrial ovens. The only light comes from the warm glow of the kitchen and the blue tint of the pre-dawn streetlights outside.
In this corner of the city, time is measured in rising dough and cooling crusts. But today, the clock sounds different.
Ivan Adam (MC)
(His forearms are dusted in flour, muscles tensing as he rhythmically kneads a heavy mass of dough. He doesn’t look up.) "You’re late with the coffee, Zayn."
Zayn Draven (MC's bff)
(Leaning against the heavy steel flour mixer, his eyes fixed on the window. He hasn't touched his cigarette.) "I’m not the only one who’s early today, Ivan."
Ivan Adam (MC)
(Stops. The silence of the bakery feels heavy.) "How many?"
Zayn Draven (MC's bff)
"Two. One’s a suit—looks like he’s made of glass and ice. The other... she looks like she’s carrying the weight of the world in a leather briefcase."
Ivan Adam (MC)
(Wiping his hands on his apron, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly tone.) "Let them in. We don't hide behind locked doors.
[The bell above the door rings—a sharp, cheerful sound that feels wrong in the tense atmosphere. Elias Thorne steps inside. He pauses, his expensive Italian leather shoes clicking softly on the worn wooden floor. Sarah follows a step behind, her eyes downcast.]
Elias Thorn(ML)
(Adjusting his cufflink, his gaze sweeping over the rustic interior with cold precision.) "Mr. Adam, I presume? I apologize for the hour. I find that reality is best delivered before the world gets too loud to hear it."
Ivan Adam (MC)
(Stepping out from the kitchen, standing his ground. He is a head shorter than Elias, but twice as broad.) "This is a place of work, Mr. Thorne. Not a courtroom. You’re wasting your breath and my time."
Elias Thorn(ML)
(He walks closer, stopping just outside Ivan’s personal space. The scent of woodsmoke and sugar from Ivan meets the sharp, sterile scent of Elias’s cologne.) "I’m not here to argue. I’m here to offer you an exit. My client is generous, but his patience has a ceiling. This..." (He gestures vaguely at the warm walls) "...is an obstacle."
Ivan Adam (MC)
(His voice is dangerously calm.) "This 'obstacle' fed my grandfather. It fed this neighborhood when the riots broke out. You see a line on a map. I see a soul."
Elias Thorn(ML)
(His grey eyes flicker, a brief shadow of something—not pity, but a cold recognition—passing through them.) "Souls don't pay property taxes, Mr. Adam. And they certainly don't stop demolition crews."
Sarah(Elias assistant)
(Softly, her voice trembling just enough for only Elias to hear.) "Sir... the papers."
[Elias reaches into the briefcase Sarah holds out. He doesn't look at her. He places a thick, cream-colored envelope on the flour-dusted counter.]
Elias Thorn(ML)
"Forty-eight hours. Read it. Mourn it. Then sign it."
Zayn Draven (MC's bff)
(Stepping forward, his hand resting on the handle of a heavy wrench in his back pocket.) "And if he doesn't?"
Elias Thorn(ML)
(Turns his head slowly to look at Zayn, his expression unreadable.) "Then we stop being polite. And believe me, Mr. Raven... you won't like me when I'm bored."
[Elias turns to leave, but as he reaches the door, he stops. He looks back at Ivan, who is still standing like a statue behind the counter.]
Elias Thorn(ML)
"Get some sleep, Ivan. You look like a man who's fighting a war that's already over."
[The door closes. The silence returns, but the warmth of the bakery is gone.]
Ivan Adam (MC)
(His hand trembles slightly as he touches the envelope, leaving a white, ghostly fingerprint on the expensive paper.) "He didn't even look at the bread, Zayn."
Zayn Draven (MC's bff)
"Men like him don't eat, Ivan. They just consume."
Chapter 2: Cracked Glass
The interior of a sleek, black luxury sedan parked just a block away from the bakery. The rain has begun to mist against the windows, blurring the warm lights of the shop in the rearview mirror.
Inside the car, the air is climate-controlled and sterile. It smells of expensive leather and the sharp metallic tang of Sarah’s nervous energy.
Sarah(Elias assistant)
(Her fingers are white-knuckled around her tablet. She stares straight ahead.) "He won't sign it, sir."
Elias Thorn(ML)
(He is leaning back, eyes closed, the orange glow of a streetlamp passing over his sharp features as they drive.) "Of course he won't. Not today."
Sarah(Elias assistant)
"Then why give him the forty-eight hours? Marcus wanted the injunction filed by noon. If we wait, Marcus will—"
Elias Thorn(ML)
(Opening his eyes, the grey iris catching the light like flint.) "Marcus wants a result, Sarah. I want a surrender. There is a difference. If you break a man too fast, he has nothing left to lose. But if you let him sit with the fear... he’ll find his own way to the exit."
Sarah(Elias assistant)
(A bitter shadow crosses her face, though she hides it well.) "Is that what you’re doing with me? Waiting for me to find my own way to the exit?"
Elias turns his head slowly. The silence in the car becomes suffocating.
Elias Thorn(ML)
"Your father called the office yesterday. He mentioned the guest list for the engagement gala. He seemed... pleased."
Sarah(Elias assistant)
(Her voice is a mere whisper, cracked.) "I haven't even met him, Elias. He’s a stranger. My parents just want the Vane connection."
Elias Thorn(ML)
(He looks back out the window, his voice turning back into a wall of ice.) "We all have roles to play. I am the sword. You are the shield. And Ivan Adam... he is the ghost of a world that no longer exists. Don't let sentimentality cloud your vision, Sarah. It’s a very expensive mistake."
Back at the Bakery. The kitchen is silent now, save for the crackle of a radio playing low blues in the background. Zayn is sitting on a flour sack, cleaning a grease-stained part from his bike.
Zayn Draven (MC's bff)
"You’re staring at it again."
Ivan Adam (MC)
(He is leaning against the cooling oven, the legal envelope unopened on the table in front of him. He looks exhausted.) "He called it an 'obstacle,' Zayn. Like we're just a rock in the middle of the road."
Zayn Draven (MC's bff)
"He’s a vulture in a tie, Ivan. He wants you to feel small so you’ll take the check and run."
Ivan Adam (MC)
(Picking up the envelope, feeling the weight of the thick paper.) "Did you see his hands? They were perfect. Not a scar. Not a callous. He’s never built anything in his life, yet he has the power to tear this all down with a fountain pen."
Zayn Draven (MC's bff)
(Standing up, tossing the wrench onto the table with a loud clank.) "Then let him try. I’ve dealt with guys like him before. They think because they have the law, they have the power. But the law doesn't know how to handle a man who doesn't care about their money."
Ivan Adam (MC)
(A small, tired smile tugs at his lips.) "I care about the bakery, Zayn. But I think... I think I’m more afraid of the way he looked at me."
Zayn Draven (MC's bff)
(Frowning.) "How?"
Ivan Adam (MC)
"Like he was looking at something he’d already broken. Like he knew the ending of the book before I even turned the page."
Outside, the mist turns into a steady pour. In the dark office of Vane Development, Marcus Vane watches the rain hit his window, a digital blueprint of the bakery site glowing red on his screen.
Ivan finally slides a finger under the seal of the envelope. He doesn't find a check. He finds a photograph of the bakery's back alley—and Zayn standing next to a crate that definitely shouldn't be there.
Ivan Adam (MC)
(His breath hitches.) "Zayn... what did you do?"
