STEP BROTHER DIARIES: ALYSSA AND JAKE

I Love Him - (We're not blood-related!)

The rain outside slammed against the windowpane, a relentless, dull roar that usually drowned out the rest of the world. In the quiet, shadowed corner of the living room, it felt like they were the only two people left alive.

Jake reached out, his fingers trembling slightly as he pulled Alyssa close against his chest. He felt the rapid, erratic beat of her heart against his ribs. Tilting her chin up, his gaze locked onto hers, searching for the same terrifying certainty he felt inside. When his lips met hers, it was gentle—a soft, breathless reassurance meant to quiet the storm between them, if only for a second.

Then, the world shattered.

A sharp, violent crack echoed through the room, followed by the chaotic, musical ring of breaking glass. The sound sliced through the heavy air like a physical blade.

Both of them froze. The warmth of the kiss instantly evaporated, replaced by a cold, jarring spike of adrenaline. Alyssa’s breath hitched in her throat, her hands gripping Jake’s jacket as panic seized them in a vice grip.

In unison, their heads snapped toward the doorway.

Standing under the harsh hallway light was their mother. Her hand was still frozen in mid-air, trembling, right above where the shattered pieces of a water glass now lay scattered across the hardwood floor.

The color had completely drained from her face, leaving her a ghostly, hollow white. Her eyes were wide, fixed on her children with a look of absolute, unvarnished horror. The silence that followed was suffocating, heavy with a truth that could never, ever be unsaid.

The heavy silence didn't break; it exploded.

Before either of them could draw another breath, Esmeralda crossed the room. Her movement was a blur of frantic, desperate motion. She seized Alyssa’s arm, her fingers digging in with a terrifying strength as she violently yanked her daughter away from Jake.

In the same breathless second, Esmeralda’s hand whipped through the air.

Smack.

The slap echoed sharply through the room. The force of it snapped Jake’s head to the side, leaving a searing, hot print across his cheek.

Esmeralda stood between them, her chest heaving as she gasped for air. She looked between the two of them, her hands trembling so violently she had to ball them into fists.

When she spoke, her voice was a cracked, shaking whisper, vibrating with sheer disbelief.

"What in the world... were you thinking?" The whisper strained, cracking under the weight of her fury. "Doing something so... so inappropriate? Under my roof? In this house?!"

Alyssa stumbled back, utterly speechless. Her throat felt tight, choked by a sudden rush of tears as she stared at her mother, paralyzed by the raw disgust bleeding from Esmeralda's eyes.

Jake didn't yell. He didn't run. Slowly, he lowered his hand from his burning cheek, his fingers dropping to his side. He lifted his head, his gaze steady, locking directly onto his stepmother’s panicked eyes. When he spoke, his voice was unnervingly calm, grounded by a terrifying seriousness.

"I genuinely love Alyssa, Esmeralda," Jake said, refusing to call her mother. "Not as a sister. As a woman."

The confession hung in the air like poison. For Esmeralda, the words didn't offer clarity; they fueled a blinding surge of anger and physical revulsion. A choked gasp of pure disgust escaped her lips, and she raised her hand a second time, aiming to strike the defiance right off his face.

But the blow never landed.

Alyssa threw herself forward, shielding Jake’s body with her own. She intercepted her mother, staring up at her through a thick veil of tears that finally spilled over her lashes.

"I love Jake, Mom!" Alyssa cried out, her voice trembling but fiercely protective. "He’s my everything! Besides... he isn't my brother. We're not blood-related!"

I love Him- My Big Brother

Chapter 1: My Big Brother

Alyssa’s POV

Damn it, it hurts..

I sat flat on the cold, waxed linoleum floor of the kindergarten homeroom, rubbing my scraped knee. The colorful alphabet posters on the wall blurred through the tears stinging my eyes. Just a second ago, we were supposed to be lining up for recess, but then a heavy shove from behind had sent me sprawling.

I looked up, glaring through my messy bangs at the boy standing over me. "Ryan, you’re such a bad kid! Why did you push me? I’m going to tell my brother!"

Ryan didn't even look guilty. He just crossed his arms, puffing out his chest with a mean, mocking grin. "What a crybaby you are! It serves you right anyway, because your mother is a whore!"

I blinked, the tears freezing on my cheeks. The word felt heavy and ugly, bouncing off the bright classroom walls, but it was a word I had never heard before. "What 'whore' do you mean? My mother is the kindest soul on this earth! Apologize right now!"

Before Ryan could open his mouth to snap back, the heavy wooden door swung open.

"Alright, everyone, back to your seats!"

The teacher's sharp voice cut through the midday chatter. Instantly, the classroom erupted into a flurry of scuffling feet and scraping chairs as the students scattered like startled birds, rushing back to their desks.

Ryan gave me one last dirty look before turning on his heel and blending into the crowd. I pushed myself up, wiping the dust off my skirt, the strange word still ringing in my ears.

By the time the final bell rang, the afternoon sun was beginning to dip, casting long, golden shadows across the pavement.

The walk home was usually my favorite part of the day because I had Jake. Even though we didn't share the same blood, he was my big brother, my protector, the one who always held my hand so I wouldn't trip. But today, I walked in total silence, my eyes glued to my scuffed shoes as we made our way down the familiar sidewalk.

Jake noticed the quiet immediately. He slowed his pace, his fingers tightening gently around mine. "Alyssa? What’s wrong? You’re usually talking my ear off by now."

I swallowed hard, looking up at his face. He looked so mature, so dependable. If anyone knew everything in the world, it was him.

"Brother..." I hesitated, my voice dropping to a small, cautious whisper. "What does a whore mean?"

Jake stopped dead in his tracks. The easy, relaxed expression on his face vanished, replaced by a sudden, rigid tension. His brow furrowed deeply, and his grip on my hand flinched..

"Whore?" Jake repeated, his voice dropping an octave, laced with a sharp, protective edge. "Who said that to you, Alyssa?"

"You know, a boy from my class," I said, looking up at him earnestly, entirely innocent to the weight of what I was asking. "He told me Mom is a whore. I had a feeling it was a bad word, but I don't know what it means... so tell me, brother, what is it?"

Jake’s POV

Hearing that word come out of Alyssa’s small, innocent mouth felt like a physical blow to my chest. A cold wave of anger surged through me, my fists tightening instinctively. Ryan. I didn't even know the kid, but right then, I wanted nothing more than to find him and make him regret ever speaking to my little sister that way.

But looking down at Alyssa’s wide, confused eyes, I forced the anger down. She didn't need to see me mad. She needed her big brother.

I gently placed my hands on her small shoulders, dropping to one knee so I could level my face with hers. I wanted her to see total certainty in my eyes. It was far too early for her to know what that vulgar word really meant—the ugly, adult weight behind it wasn't something a kindergartener should ever have to carry.

"Alyssa, look at me," I said, keeping my voice as gentle and steady as possible. "Your mother isn't that. 'Whore' is just a word used to describe a really, really bad person. That boy was just trying to be mean."

The tears she had been holding back finally spilled over her rosy cheeks. "But Mom isn't bad!" she cried, her voice cracking with a child's desperate loyalty. "She’s kind! She loves me, and she loves you... she loves us so much!"

Seeing her cry broke my heart, but her words brought a soft, reassuring smile to my lips. I reached up, gently wiping a tear from her cheek with the pad of my thumb.

"There you go. See? I told you Mom isn't a whore, because she's kind," I murmured softly, squeezing her shoulders. "So don't let what he said bother you too much, okay?"

I stood back up, taking her hand again and giving it a playful tug to get her moving.

"Cheer up. Tomorrow, I’m going to personally talk to your teacher and make sure she disciplines that little brat."

Alyssa’s POV

The moment Jake unlocked the front door, the warm, familiar scent of home washed over me, instantly chasing away the lingering shadows of the schoolyard. I kicked off my shoes at the entryway and completely forgot about the scraped knee or the mean words from earlier.

"Mom!"

I sprinted down the hallway, the soles of my socks sliding slightly on the polished floor, and burst into the kitchen. Mom was standing by the counter, her back to me as she washed vegetables. I didn't hesitate—I threw my arms around her waist, burying my face into her apron. "I missed you, Mom!"

Mom let out a soft, surprised laugh. She turned around within my embrace, her hands still slightly damp, and looked down at me with a warm, indulgent smile. She reached out, gently bopping the tip of my nose.

"Silly kid," she teased, her voice sweet and soothing. "We were only apart for a few hours. What do you want for dinner tonight?"

My eyes sparked with pure joy. The answer was incredibly easy. "I want hamburger steak!"

Mom chuckled, shaking her head at my enthusiasm. Then, her gaze drifted over my shoulder toward the kitchen doorway. Her expression softened even further, a welcoming smile lighting up her face as she saw my big brother standing there, watching us with his usual quiet presence.

"Welcome home, Jake," she said warmly, treating him with the exact same maternal tenderness she gave me. "What about you, dear? What would you like for dinner?"

Jake leaned casually against the doorframe, his hands tucked into his pockets. He looked at me, a small, relaxed smile playing on his lips, before looking back at Mom.

"I'm fine with whatever Alyssa wants," he said softly.
