Fragments of Stories
Before you fade away (1)
Dark clouds blanketed the sky like a black veil.
The hospital air felt humid and sticky amidst the buzzing voices of patients visitors and exhausted staff.
Suddenly an alarm shrieked through the ICU ward.
Nurses in charge hurried into the room and attempted to stabilize the patient as monitors flashed erratically.
Outside, rain drops fell from the sky instantly soaking the city wet.
However, as they tried as before, this time the situation is more serious.
Helpless, one of them went to seek the attending doctor.
After a few minutes the doctor, an old senior doctor came and took the control of situation barely stabilizing the patient’s vitals.
Just as the doctor stepped out of the ward, a man rushed from the corridor, his neat attire shuffled by his large movements.
Seeing him rushing, he sighs lightly.
The man asked his eyes darted in to the ward, before landing on the bed.
Senior doctor
"It's okay, I stabilized him for now."
The doctor reassured him as he led the man to his workroom.
Seconds later both sat at the work table, a cool breeze drifted through the room.
The old doctor took of his glasses with weary expression, addressed the man across from him.
Mr. Jung didn't reply, just stared at him silently.
He felt faint premonition that he won't like the following words.
Like hearing his thoughts the next words from the doctor were really not pleasant.
Senior doctor
"Don't get your hopes high."
Senior doctor
"This is already fifth time. If it happens again once or twice, the chances are slim."
Mr. Jung clenched his palm tightly that knuckles turned white under the pressure.
Senior doctor
"It's already a miracle that he can hold on until now."
The doctor clasped his hands on the table.
Mr. Jung lowered his eyes slightly, his thoughts unknown.
A few seconds passed before Mr. Jung moved.
Leaving this sentence, he stood up and bowed to the doctor before he left the office.
Staring at the man leaving, the doctor shook his head with a sigh and put on his glasses back.
Before you fade away (2)
Lightning struck through the ink-black night sky.
Large drops of rain fell from the sky instantly soaking the city like a white curtain.
A soft ding sounded in the silent floor of an apartment.
A young man in his long trench coat stepped out the elevator, holding a phone to his ear, backpack on his back.
A cool rainy breeze drifted through the corridor.
The clinking of shoes against the floor reverberated in the hallway.
The conversation of the young man on phone, echoed particularly loud and eerie.
???
"Ye. I'm nearly at home, just a few steps."
Jungkook mother
"Take care of yourself Jungkookah."
Jungkook
"Hmm, I will. Don't worry."
Jungkook already reached the door of his apartment in a few seconds.
With a click, he opened the door and stepped into the house.
He stood at the door step and bend down to change his shoes while continuing his conversation with his mother.
Behind him, the slightly ajar door, slowly closed and locked itself with a click.
Unaware of this Jungkook turned to close the door, however seeing the closed door, he frowned.
Jungkook
'Did I close the door before?'
Before he could think further, his mom voice bring him back from the thought.
Jungkook
"Ye. Hmm, nothing."
The early morning sun peeked through the rain streaked windows, warming the cold apartment.
Sunlight filtered through the bedroom window, landing softly on Jungkook's face.
A light frown appeared on Jungkook sleeping face.
A few moments later, a sigh escaped from the young man on bed.
His hand stretched and took the phone under the pillow expertly, without opening his eyes.
He unlocked his phone the next moment a picture of him and his mom appeared in phone as it reflected in his eyes.
He gave a soft smile and stood up stretching.
He swiftly tidied up the bed.
Warm water splashed across his face as he washed up.
He then went to the kitchen, took a cup and coffee powder, made himself a coffee.
His oversized hoodie hung loosely on his shoulders, a few droplets of water hung from his wet hair, giving a fresh soft and warm feeling.
In a few moments, he took the coffee mug, sat at the dining table.
His thoughts churned as he took a sip from the coffee.
Jungkook
'It's been a week he moved into this apartment.'
Jungkook shoulders relaxed slightly.
His eyes closed as if savoring the flavor.
Jungkook
'I had a job as an editor in a publishing company, and moved into this nice apartment with cheaper price than market.'
He opened his eyes, his gaze landed on the apartment door that locked tightly before him.
Thinking back on the past week, he realized several strange things had happened.
Jungkook
'On the second day I moved in, light went off in my room before I turn off.'
Jungkook
'On fourth day, I was searching my watch, I checked on dining table seeing It's not there I went to my room before coming to the dining area, only to find it there.'
Jungkook
'And yesterday too, I opened the door and changed my shoes then want to close the door but its already locked.'
He frowned slightly, he felt slight tremor in his heart.
The phone ringing interrupted his spiraling thoughts.
Before you fade away (3)
Jungkook answered the call, pushing his thoughts aside.
Few minutes later, he ended the call, exhaling a breath.
The bitter taste of cold coffee spread across his tongue.
Like how he felt after knowing he had to work on his day off.
He cheered himself up lightly.
The warm sun rays from the opened window fell onto the floor, dust particles swirled in the air.
The apartment house was silent except for the tapping sounds of keyboard.
Jungkook, sitting on the sofa, one leg crossed over another on the floor, his laptop on his lap, tapping continuously.
Occasionally stopping midway to check, then resuming again.
On the coffee table, a book placed half opened, close to the edge.
The wind fluttered the opened pages of the book.
The sound echoed loudly in the silence.
Suddenly, the book fell to the floor, which startled Jungkook so much that he almost flung away his laptop.
He took a deep breath, relaxed slightly upon seeing the book on the floor.
He bent down and picked up the book from the floor, placing it on the coffee table again.
Jungkook paused briefly, then looked at the book, feeling confused.
Jungkook
'How did it fall?'
Jungkook
'I didn't put it on edge so close that it fell accidentally.'
He thought. Feeling inexplicable.
His thoughts interrupted by the growl from his stomach.
Jungkook was so focused on his work, that he lost his sense of time.
Only now did he realize that it's already late afternoon.
He froze, a moment later he rubbed his neck awkwardly.
Jungkook's ears turned light pink in embarrassment even though nobody was there.
He stopped his almost finished work and got up to make something to eat.
