I turned at the sound of my name and automatically smiled at the women down the street that screamed, she was beaming at me with her phone out, I politely waved at her. Just like how the PR team had taught me before
I started walking again towards the Baskin-Robbins at the corner of the street
Someone
Oh my... God!...is that.... Adrien Campbell!?
I briefly Closed my eyes. I did it again. Even though Leo told me not to.
They were getting louder and louder, The crowd was getting denser by the second.
I swear to god there was even a guy that almost crashed into a tree because he was staring at me too much.
I pulled my hood up, but the damage was unfortunately done, people where piling. They weren't hostile, they never were it's just people are starting to form huge crowds.
𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘐 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘓𝘦𝘰 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘮𝘦?
I quickly fished out my phone, dialing Leonard, My bodyguard's number. Already making my way to a less crowded alleyway.
Adrien Campbell
Hey Leo? Can you…uh...come pick me up?.....yeah, It's the crowd again.
I knew he would have guessed the situation right away. My man is skilled. Sorry.
Within minutes of the call, Leo arrived with the car near the alleyway.
He discreetly led me, to the car, making sure no one would notice me. I immediately slumped in my seat as soon as I sat down inside the car. Leo gave me a 'look' while passing me a water bottle before starting the engine of the car.
Adrien Campbell
Hey! What was that look for?
I whined at him, He shook his head
Leonard Moriera
You smiled at someone again right? Or did you wave at them? Let me guess, you did 'both'?
I gulped down the water, eyes wandering, nervousness claiming me.
I almost visibly flinched when he shot a glare at me
Adrien Campbell
Okay, I did smile and wave at the woman, but she looked so happy, Leo.
I tried arguing with him,
I slumped against the window of the car, sulking away. I heard him sigh, but I didn't pay attention to him. 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘢𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘦𝘳.
Leonard Moriera
What did I tell you, Adrien?
He asks, his voice scary like he would chew me down into goo if I didn't answer to his liking. Audibly gulped, clearing my throat
Adrien Campbell
You said 'Adrien. Don't. Attract. Any. Attention.' See I even learned how to mimic your voice
I laughed at my own joke but stopped when Leo glared at me through the rearview mirror.
Halfway through the peaceful ride. Leo spoke up again.
Leonard Moriera
You have practice in two hours.
Adrien Campbell
Can we get ice cream on our way there?
That's all he said, my face turned into a snarl
Adrien Campbell
But I didn't even get to eat, no – I didn't even get to buy the last one.
Leonard Moriera
You are a world-class athlete, Adrien.
He argues, I sit back a pout, subconsciously starting to form on my face. Leo glanced at me through the rearview mirror.
Leonard Moriera
God, not that disgustingly awful pout*mumbles to himself*
Adrien Campbell
What did you say!
Adrien Campbell
Nothing– you are a world-class athlete that's pouting for an ice cream right now.
His says, frustration and annoyance evident in his voice
Adrien Campbell
World class athletes are meant to get their strawberry ice cream, Leo. It's written in the contract.
I say in a 'duh' tone, sounding very confident.
Leonard Moriera
There is no contract
Leo says with his jaw clenched
Adrien Campbell
There should be!
Leonard Moriera
Fine, I will get you, your strawberry ice cream
I blinked, Brain stuttering for a moment before I finally spoke again.
Adrien Campbell
Wait?... what?– Really?
Leo didn't answer, just kept driving. Jaw clenched, hands on the wheel, eyes up ahead on the road.
Adrien Campbell
You are not messing with me are you?
Leonard Moriera
You don't need to be messed with, you are already a mess.
Adrien Campbell
That's not an answer!
Leonard Moriera
That is the answer.
His eyes, momentarily flickered to meet mine in the rearview mirror before they return to the road.
Leonard Moriera
One cone, only one. One scoop and no sprinkles.
He says grumpily. My jaw dropped open like I was a frog.
Adrien Campbell
Leo, you can't give a man hope and then take away his sprinkles!
I argue with him. Which 'human' refuses to give someone sprinkles?
Adrien Campbell
Now that's just cruel– inhumane, even. You can't do that, I will call my ice cream lawyer.
Leonard Moriera
You don't even have a lawyer
He said, his face clenching with annoyance, but, the corner of his lips twitched but it was gone before I could even call it a smile.
But I saw it, I always did
I leaned back against the seat, a wide grin still on my face. Strawberry ice cream without sprinkles was still strawberry ice cream and Leo grudgingly agreeing to buy me one was still a win.
The happy bubble popped when my phone buzzed on my lap.
I didn't need to look at it to tell who it was. Mom or Dad. It would be the same message but a different font.
My smile disappeared, face twisting into a saddened frown when I read the text that my dad sent me. It was the same one, same message they have been sending me since I started off my career, but it always came in different forms.
'When are you going to quit this stupid figure skating? You cousin just landed a job, your brother just got varsity.'
I stared at it for a minute, in silence. Trying to ignore the hurt– the sting in my heart that I thought I buried long ago
Adrien Campbell
So, practice– what am I doing today?
I asked him, trying to hide my emotions. Leo glanced at me
Leonard Moriera
Your coach said you will be doing Quadruple toe loops today
I groaned, Loud and dramatic. The only way I could do it
Adrien Campbell
Ugh... Why does Coach Carlos hate me so much!
Leonard Moriera
He wants you to win, Adrien.
Adrien Campbell
Same thing
Leo then pulls up into a gas station where they sell single servings of ice cream. He puts the car into park and then turns around to look at me.
Leonard Moriera
Are you okay?
That's what he asks. 'Are you okay?'. Hint of concern evident in his voice, not grumpy, not annoyed just... quiet and that– changed everything. he asks the question like my answers can change everything.
I smiled at him. The real smile. Not the PR one
Adrien Campbell
I will be after eating my strawberry ice cream.
He stays quiet for a minute. Studying me. Observing me. Probably to detect if I was lying to him or not.
Leo then proceeded to clear his throat and then gets off the car without saying anything.
I frown in confusion.
𝘞𝘦𝘪𝘳𝘥
I sighed, sitting in the lonely silence of the car. "𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦" Leo's words played in my mind like a song on repeat. Those words brought so many memories with them.
My father's words played in my mind.
"𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘢 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘬𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳?" 𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳'𝘴 𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘴. 𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘨." 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘴. 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦, 𝘈𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯?"
I snapped open my eyes, blinking away the memory that resurfaced. I looked outside the window, Leo was walking towards the car. He always walked like someone who'd seen things he isn't meant to talk about.
The phone in my lap buzzed again.
i don't pick up. I don't look at it.
I look at my reflection in the rearview mirror. Messy black hair with the blue highlights. Wrinkled hoodie. A crooked smiled adorning my face.
I tried to tell myself the words that I have said before, countless times.
𝘠𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘬𝘢𝘺. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘤𝘦. 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘦𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶
Leo open the door of the car, sitting inside and closing it with a thud. He turned to look at me while he handed me that ice cream cone. it was just like he said. One scoop, single serving and no sprinkles but he did bring a wooden spoon shaped like a leaf. And that?
It brought a smile to my face.

The ice cream was gone faster than it should have. One bite, two, three and on the fourth. It was gone
It was not enough strawberry goodness for a man to be satisfied and definitely not enough to fuel a world class athlete.
Another pout formed on my face without me realising it.
Leonard Moriera
Why are you pouting again?
I frowned at Leo, My pout still intact on my face.
Adrien Campbell
I am pouting? I am reflecting?
Leonard Moriera
On what? The tragic end of your strawberry ice creams lifespan?
I snapped my head up at him, an expression of surprise taking up my face.
Adrien Campbell
Wow, that was actually so poetic of you, Leo.
Adrien Campbell
I am proud of you
I said grinning ear to ear. Leo just grumbled and kept driving, his hands steady on the wheel like a robot. He looked like he was in a driving school or something.
But I saw it. The little crease at the corner of his lips. Almost a smile. 𝘈𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵.
The rest of the ride was just complete silence. I leaned my head against the car window, looking outside. People were walking their dogs, hanging out with people. Just doing normal 𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 things.
Those were the kind of things I couldn't do without a Woman shouting.
'Oh My GOd, LooK It'S AdRien CampBeLl!'
shivers ran down my spine just thinking about it.
The rink appeared in the distance. The old grey building appeared in my view. it was a big indoor rink, big athelets used often. Leo pulled into the private lot, behind the building. Away from all the media if there were any.
The building was quite old. The sign at the front faded from years of sun and snow. The rink was my second home.
𝘔𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵
Leonard Moriera
You ready?
Leo asked from the front seat.
I didn't know if it was for the practice today, the day ahead or both.
Adrien Campbell
I am Adrien Campbell
, I was born ready.
Leonard Moriera
You were born dramatic *mutters under his breath.*
As Leo opened the door for me. The familiar scent of home hit.
This was the place where I made sense. This was the place where my chest was unclenched like I had let go of all the worries in the world.
The hallways smelled like Ice– cold, sharp and a little like metal
The rink was empty when we walked in. It was resurfaced– smooth and White. Waiting. The stands stretched out far on both sides. But there were no fans screeching my name. Here, it was only me and the ice
Leo sat down on a seat in the first row. His usual spot, where he could see everything that was happening. He took out his phone and started doing whatever bodyguards do when they don't save me from huge crowds.
Carlos Moriarty/Adrien's bestfriend.
Campbell!
I hear Coach Carlos' name call me from behind.
I turn around to see Carlos coming out of the locker room area. His clipboard in one hand and a stopwatch in the other. I have heard that Coaches are usually very old but Carlos? he is far from old.
Carlos Moriarty/Adrien's bestfriend.
You are late, Campbell.
Adrien Campbell
I am right on time actually, Look, I can show you.
I say, showing him the time on my watch.
Carlos Moriarty/Adrien's bestfriend.
Well you're late because you didn't come in before I did.
He stands in front of me, crossing his arms and squinting his eyes.
Carlos Moriarty/Adrien's bestfriend.
Where is your fire, Adrien? Where is your hunger?
Adrien Campbell
Actually I just ate strawberry icecream on my wa-
Carlos Moriarty/Adrien's bestfriend.
I don't want to hear about your sweet tooth, Campbell. Now Chop-Chop we got training to do.
Adrien Campbell
Even though not old you sure do act like it sometimes *mumbles*
Carlos Moriarty/Adrien's bestfriend.
Quadruple toe loops ,today. 20 attempts, I will be watching.
My jaw dropped at his demand.
Adrien Campbell
But Carl-Coach! 20 is abs-
Carlos Moriarty/Adrien's bestfriend.
19, you just wasted 5 seconds Adrien. I will give you one minute to go and put your skates on.
My shoulders slump in defeat, I turn towards the locker rooms, throwing Leo a glance who just shrugs ‘Don’t look at me.’
I frown at his remarks and storm to the locker rooms to get my skates. After putting my things in the locker I take out my skates. My routine was muscle memory by now, I slip them one, lace them up tight and step onto the ice.
The blades bite into the surface, I felt it.
Home.
I pushed off, gliding forward. The cold air kissed my face as I glided across the ice.
The noise was the scraping of the ice. No texts from father, No screeching fans, nothing. It was only me, the ice and the silence. I skated across the rink to the centre ice, turning to face the empty stands.
Coach Carlos raised his arm, his stopwatch in his hand
Carlos Moriarty/Adrien's bestfriend.
Go!
The Quadruple toe loop is a cruel joke that someone decided to call a jump. Like you jump high into the air, spin four times, faster then humanly possible and then hope you won't shatter your ankles when you land.
I skated
I launched
I spun
I landed
But it wasn't my ankle, it was my blades digging into the ice beneath me.
That was before my feet decided to give up on me and I landed face first on to the floor.
Carlos Moriarty/Adrien's bestfriend.
Again!
I groaned and grumbled, getting up again, doing the same routine. Skates, launch, spin, land.
No matter how much I hate practising these, I also can't deny the fact that this? It is my home. The ice is my place, I feel like me when my blades cut through the ice, cold air tousling my hair in an affectionate mess.
I looked at the stands near the entrance to see what Leo was doing.
He wasn't watching his phone, he was watching me with an unreadable look in his eyes.
What the hell?
Why is he staring at me like that?
did I do something wrong in my routine?
I tilted my head in an indication of ‘is something wrong?’
Leo's eyes snapped wide, he shook his head and snapped his neck down to look at his phone.
Sheesh, he's being weird.
what's his deal these days?
A smug smile appeared on my face as something came up in my mind. I can tease him about this.
In this world, I guess there is only one person whom I can call a real friend.
It's Mr. Moreira, aka Leo, my bodyguard.
He has been my bodyguard for the past 2,3 years. He has seen me through my lowest.
I consider him a friend even though he considers me his employer.
