Love Is Never the Deal
The file
The Pratap Singh file was thick.
Sia had read it twice the night before. Not because she needed to. Because she needed to know exactly who she was walking into.
Pratap Singh family. Old money. Political connections.
Vikram Pratap Singh–3-term MP. And his son. Yashveer Pratap Singh.
Yashveer was photographed at approximately every party that mattered in Delhi and Mumbai between 2018 and now.
Currently linked to–she had stopped counting at four names.
The scandals were recent. A model. A leaked conversation. A financial irregularity that his father's people had managed to keep at the level of rumour but just barely.
The account itself was stable. The previous manager had handled it for over a decade.
Which meant two things — trust, and habits that hadn’t been questioned in years.
Sia closed the file. Picked up her coffee. And walked into the meeting room.
She was early. She always was.
File placed neatly. Pen uncapped. Phone checked once, then turned face down.
This was supposed to be simple — a restructuring discussion before the financial year closed.
At 4:07 the door opened.
Not the aide. Not Vikram Pratap Singh.
Him.
He walked in like the room had been waiting for him. Dark jacket, no tie, the kind of watch that didn't need to announce itself.
He looked at her the way men like him look at young women—quick, complete, and already decided. Then he pulled out the chair across from her and sat.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
You're the new manager.
Sia Saxena
Sia Saxena. Senior Relationship Manager.
She slid her card across the table
Sia Saxena
I wasn't informed this meeting included you, Mr. Singh.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
Does it bother you?
Sia Saxena
It changes the agenda (opens her file) Is your father joining us or–
Yashveer Pratap Singh
He got held up. Parliament thing (leans back) You can talk to me.
Sia held his gaze for a second. Then looked back at her file.
Sia Saxena
This discussion requires the primary account holder. We’ll need to reschedule.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
Or, you explain it to me and I’ll handle it.
Sia Saxena
That’s not how this works.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
I’m his son.
Sia Saxena
You’re not on the account. Mr. Singh.
That landed. Not heavily. Just… clearly.
He tilted his head slightly. The corner of his mouth moved–not quite a smile, something more like the beginning of deciding to be charming.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
Yash
Yashveer Pratap Singh
Call me Yash. Mr. Singh is my father. (glanced at her card still on the table) Sia.
She picked her card back up and put it in her file.
Sia Saxena
I'll have my assistant contact your father's office to reschedule (closing the file) If there's nothing else —
Yashveer Pratap Singh
There's a dinner. Thursday. Some finance ministry people. My father wants to introduce the new manager. You should come.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
It's networking. Beneficial for you (Smirks) And the company won't be terrible.
Sia looked at him the way she looked at accounts that didn't balance.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
Yash
Sia Saxena
Mr. Singh (closed the file completely) I manage your family's financial portfolio. That is the entirety of our professional relationship. I don't attend dinners.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
(Raised an eyebrow) I was talking about networking.
Sia Saxena
I know what you were talking about.
He looked at her with an expression she couldn't immediately categorise.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
You are very–
Yashveer Pratap Singh
I was going to say direct.
Sia Saxena
Same thing in this office.
He leaned forward slightly, elbows on the table.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
Most people aren't this direct with me.
Sia Saxena
I know. That's your problem, not mine.
Something shifted in his face. Not anger. Something quieter than anger.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
You've read about me.
Sia Saxena
I read about all my clients.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
And?
Sia Saxena
And your portfolio is structured well. Your father's team is conservative but not unimaginative.
She flipped the file open to a specific page and turned it toward him.
Sia Saxena
This however–this fund allocation from 2021–is going to create a tax exposure problem in about eight months. I'd like to address it before it becomes your father's problem during election season.
He looked at the page. She watched his eyes move across the numbers.
He was quiet for a moment.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
How bad. The performance had gone out of it.
Sia Saxena
Manageable if we act now. Complicated if we wait.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
Why didn't the last manager–
Sia Saxena
He should have caught it two years ago (pulls the file back) He didn't. I did. Last Tuesday.
Yashveer sat back in his chair.
The room was different now. She had felt it shift–the moment he stopped looking at her face and started actually listening.
She had felt this before, with other clients. It usually took longer.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
What do you need from us?
Sia Saxena
A meeting with your father. The actual account holder. Within the next two weeks.
Sia Saxena
And in future–if there's a meeting scheduled with this office, please confirm your attendance in advance. It affects preparation.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
(Nods slowly) Right.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
The dinner.
I wasn't–(Exhales) Forget the dinner.
He almost smiled. A different kind than before. Less performed.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
You're going to be difficult.
Sia Saxena
I'm going to be your family's relationship manager.
Sia Saxena
I'll have my assistant reach out about the reschedule (moves toward the door) Thank you for coming in, Mr. Singh.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
Yash.
He said, one more time. But this time it was quieter. Like he wasn't sure why he kept saying it.
She left. Yashveer sat in the empty meeting room for a moment longer than necessary.
He picked up his phone. Put it down. Picked it up again. He texted his father's aide.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
(Typed the text)💬Reschedule the Singh account meeting. And find out everything about the new manager
Yashveer Pratap Singh
💬Professionally. The account stuff.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
(Puts the phone down) 💭Difficult.

Traitor
Rahul Sharma's cabin had one chair across from his desk and a window that faced the parking lot.
Sia sat in the chair with the file open on her lap.
Sia Saxena
It's not a mistake sir. I want to be clear about that before anything else.
Rahul Sharma (Sia's Boss)
(Looked at her over his glasses) Meaning?
Sia Saxena
Meaning Mehta sir saw this. The trust structure, it's not something you miss in eleven years. It's something you leave alone.
Rahul Sharma (Sia's Boss)
That's a serious thing to say about a senior.
[Rajat Mehta is Vikram Pratap Singh's old manager–Sia's senior]
Sia Saxena
I know. But I'm saying it because it's what the file shows. The numbers don’t make sense. Money’s being spent twice where it doesn’t need to be. It’s been like that for years.
Rahul took the file from her. Looked at the pages she'd marked.
Rahul Sharma (Sia's Boss)
No notes? No emails?
Sia Saxena
Nothing that explains it.
Rahul Sharma (Sia's Boss)
And the amount?
Sia Saxena
Fourteen lakhs. Not huge. But consistent. Which makes it worse.
Rahul closed the file.
Looked at the parking lot for a moment.
Rahul Sharma (Sia's Boss)
Fix it. Quietly.
Sia Saxena
That's what I'm doing.
Rahul Sharma (Sia's Boss)
And Sia (hands her the file back) Don't put the Mehta theory in writing.
She took the file. Stood.
He read the same file at his desk. His own copy. Pulled from the account records his father's office kept separately–the real ones, not the ones that went to the bank.
He found it in twenty minutes.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
💭Mehta
He sat back. Not angry. Just–still.
Mehta had been with the account for eleven years. Had come recommended through a party contact
He picked up his phone. Called Vedansh–not a friend exactly, more like someone who knew where to find things.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
📲Mehta. Previous manager on the Pratap Singh account. Find me his connections.
Vedansh Chaudhary (Yashveer's PA)
📲How deep?
Yashveer Pratap Singh
📲Deep enough.
He ended the call. Looked at the file again.
The fourteen lakhs didn’t bother him.
It was small. It was too consistent to be accidental.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
💭Someone put him there. And someone was getting something out of it.
His phone buzzed forty minutes later. He read Vedansh's message. Read it again.
Vedansh Chaudhary (Yashveer's PA)
💬Mehta. Opposition-backed. Sitting on the account since before the 2019 election.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
💭So that's what you were doing.
He called his father's office manager. Kept it short.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
📲Mehta doesn't get access to anything connected to this family again. Any account, any property, anything. Make it quiet.
Shiv Jaiswal (Vikram's PA)
📲Yes sir.
He ended the call. Closed the file.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
💭Fixed.
He sat for a moment in the quiet of his study. The irritation was already gone–or not gone, just filed somewhere useful.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
💭The new manager found it in five days.
Yashveer Pratap Singh
💭Five days.
He didn't know what to do with that yet.
