Shadows of the Forgotten
The Three Detectives
James
You both late again?
Vijay
Relax. We came before the coffee got cold.
James
One day I’ll replace you both.
Vijay
You say that every Monday.
Vinz
And every Monday you still need us.
The rain poured outside the small detective office in Chennai. The board outside read “JVV Investigations.” The office had once been a storage room, but now it was where James, Vijay, and Vinz solved missing person cases, frauds, and strange incidents no one else wanted.
The three of them had grown up together. James was calm and intelligent. Vijay was sarcastic but dependable. Vinz was clever with technology and always alert.
James looked at a file lying on the table.
Vijay
Please tell me it’s not another cheating husband case.
James slid the photographs toward them. Each victim had strange burn marks around their necks. Their eyes were wide open in terror.
Vinz
This doesn’t look normal.
Vijay
Maybe ritual killings.
James
Police found no fingerprints. No forced entry either.
Vinz
So the victims opened the doors willingly.
James stared at one picture longer than the others.
One of the symbols drawn on the wall beside the victims looked familiar.
Years ago, he had seen the same symbol in an old notebook belonging to someone he once loved.
*Someone he never forgot*
Vijay
Great. Rain, murder, and no sleep.
Vinz
Feels like old times.
But deep inside, an old wound had begun to open again.
And somewhere in the darkness outside, someone—or something—was watching them
The First Clue
The abandoned apartment smelled of smoke and damp walls. Police tape fluttered near the broken entrance while thunder echoed outside.
Vijay
Why do all creepy cases happen during rain?
Vinz
Because sunshine ruins the mood.
James ignored them and walked toward the bedroom.
The victim, a middle-aged woman, had been removed hours ago, but the room still felt cold.
James crouched near the wall where a strange symbol had been drawn in black ash.
Vijay noticed James staring too long.
Suddenly Vinz pointed his flashlight toward the mirror.
Words were written across it.
“SHE RETURNS.”
Vijay
Nope. I officially hate this case.
James touched the writing carefully.
Because the handwriting looked familiar.
Years ago, he had received dozens of letters written in the same elegant style.
From Aadhira (the love of his life)
James
Let’s search the apartment.
While checking drawers, James found an old photograph hidden beneath the bed.
A young woman stood beside the victim.
Her face was scratched away
But on the back was a sentence.
“Death cannot separate true love.”
James felt his heartbeat rise.
He remembered the last night he saw Aadhira alive.
The rain... The screams.... The blood
Vijay entered the room holding a dusty diary.
Inside the diary were pages describing nightmares about a woman appearing at midnight.
Vinz
This is getting weird.
James closed the diary slowly.
As they walked outside, lightning flashed.
For one second, James saw a woman standing across the road.
Long hair... White dress... watching him...
Vijay
What are you looking at?
But his hands would not stop shaking
Because deep down, he feared the impossible.
What if Aadhira was somehow connected to the murders?
Memories that hurt
The office was unusually quiet.
Vinz sat at his computer searching through old police databases.
Vijay leaned back with coffee.
James stood near the window staring at the rain.
Vijay
You’ve been acting strange since yesterday
James
The symbol… I’ve seen it before.
The room went silent.
Neither Vijay nor Vinz mentioned her often. They knew how painful it was for James.
Aadhira had died five years ago in a mysterious fire accident.
At least that was what everyone believed
Vijay
You think she’s connected?
Vinz slowly turned his laptop.
It was an article about ancient rituals connected to spirits who return after violent deaths
Vijay
Great. Ghost stories now.
Vinz
Laugh all you want. The victims all visited the same abandoned church before they died.
As night fell, the three arrived at the church.
Dust covered the broken benches. Candles melted onto the floor.
Vijay
This place feels cursed.
Suddenly James noticed something near the altar.
He picked it up carefully.
His breathing stopped.
It belonged to Aadhira.
James remembered gifting it to her on her birthday.
*Flashback flooded his mind.*
Aadhira laughing.
Aadhira holding his hand.
Aadhira promising she would never leave him.
Then a whisper echoed through the church.
The voice sounded like a woman.
Soft... broken ... familiar ...
Suddenly all the candles lit up together
The church doors slammed shut.
And somewhere in the darkness, a woman began to laugh.
