The noisy music, gaudy lights, and the wildly writhing young people made the capital’s newest, trendiest bar even more wanton. The bar had already turned down the temperature as much as possible, but due to the heaving, heated masses, Bai Xinyu huddled in one corner of a couch, sweating heavily. Vexed, he undid two buttons of his shirt, and dropped the liquor glass onto the marble table.
“What’s wrong? We’re out to have fun, but your face is pissy as hell. What a wet blanket.” Zou Hang grasped his neck and pinched at it. He grinned, “Is it because there’s no girl worth looking at?”
“No.”
“Ah, fine. I know exactly what you’re like. What else can you be thinking about? If they’re not good enough, we’ll swap them for a new batch. I’m paying today, no need to save money for me.”
Bai Xinyu pushed his hand away. “Who’s saving money for you? I’m really just not in the mood.”
Zou Hang slapped him on the thigh. “Seriously, what’s going on?”
Bai Xinyu tugged at his freshly-dyed chestnut coloured hair. “I bumped into my cousin a few days ago.”
“Your cousin? Which one? Jian Suiying?”
“Mn.”
Zou Hang grinned, clicking his tongue. “He beat you up again?”
“No, but he was definitely there for that purpose. However, I was in the car, so I immediately drove off.”
“How did you piss him off again? That cousin of yours is really too harsh. To be honest, I’m also a little scared of him.”
Hearing Zou Hang badmouth Jian Suiying, Bai Xinyu was not too happy about it. However, he did not rebut him as Zou Hang was not wrong. He thought about it, then said, “Actually, he’s pretty nice to me…”
Zou Hang patted him on the back. “You’ve been conditioned to accept the abuse.”
Bai Xinyu drank a mouthful of liquor. “I won’t chat anymore. Have fun, I’m going back.”
“Eh? You’re really going? It’s still early.”
Bai Xinyu gave him a kick. “I’ll slaughter you the next time.” He left, picking up his keys and wallet.
Stepping out of the bar, the air no longer felt so murky and thick. However, today was also too damn hot, and his body still felt sticky with sweat. His head was also dizzy, and when he got into his car in the parking lot, he adjusted the air conditioning to the lowest setting, then leaned back into the seat and sighed heavily.
Ever since he bumped into his older cousin, he had been feeling a continuous sense of anxiety. Recalling the sinister look on his cousin’s face, his hands would keep shaking.
Jian Suiying was his older cousin, the only son of his mother’s younger sister. His aunt was unlucky in life, pressured to death by a mistress, and caused his cousin to lose a mother at ten years old. His mother’s heart ached for his cousin, and so she was exceptionally nice to him. As for Jian Suiying, he grew up to be very capable, and he was very good to Bai Xinyu in return. Although he had never stopped scolding him since he was a child, but even as a kid, he would give him pocket money, involve himself in fights for him, invest in his businesses, and settle his gambling debts. There were many incidents like these, so although his cousin was a little fierce, he really was pretty good to him. He had always been scared of his cousin. Whenever his parents were unable to control him, each time his cousin made an appearance, he would straight away become obedient. He had no choice, because he was really scared. A glare from his cousin was enough to make him feel as though a box was about to land his face. As such, he really did not know, half a year ago, how he had the guts to cheat money out of his cousin.
Thinking about what happened half a year ago, a look of chagrin appeared on Bai Xinyu’s face. He clutched onto the steering wheel and hit his head on it a few times, and the car horn sounded.
At that time, because of betting on football, he owed the loan sharks over three million dollars. He really did not dare to bring it up to his dad, and so he bit the bullet and looked to his cousin for a loan. In the end, his cousin too flared up, berating him and kicking him out, even saying that he would not bother about him again. At that time, a thought of wanting to commit suicide actually appeared in Bai Xinyu’s head. Unexpectedly, his cousin’s step-brother, that mistress’ son, came looking for him, telling him that he could help him. Then, he truly had been driven into a corner, with no way out, and so he collaborated with that guy to cheat his cousin out of three houses. After selling them, he finally had the money to pay his debts. Upon settling this matter, with great regret, guilt and fear, Bai Xinyu then ran off to Europe, where his aunt lived, to hide for half a year.
However, being stuck in a foreign place where they spoke a foreign language, he was without a friend. Staying at his aunt’s manor, he could only play with the dog and almost went stir-crazy. Finally, he could no longer endure it, and came back. After he was home, he did not dare to announce it. Who would have thought that only a few days after he was back, as he brought a little pretty model he had just met out, he would bump into his cousin at the parking lot. In a fright, he sped off. Even thinking about how his cousin was yelling at him made his heart tremble in fear.
He felt that he was dead, really dead. Who knew his cousin would deal with him? He was so frightened that he even did not dare to go home. As for his cousin, he had yet to call him or his parents. Did that not mean that a storm was brewing? Recalling his cousin’s methods in giving people a hard time, he shuddered. He was so anxious that he nearly cried.

Sitting in the car for nearly an hour, he had pretty much sobered up from the alcohol. Thinking it over, as he had not much money left, and sooner or later, he still had to go home. Home was still the safest. At least if his cousin came to his house looking for him, he would still have to give his mother some face and would not beat him to death. If he was caught outside instead, he would definitely be half-dead. Young Master Bai was moved by his own logic and quickly drove off, heading back home.
It was already past 1am. Bai Xinyu parked his car in the garage, soundlessly opening the door to his house and making his way upstairs in the dark. Before he even took two steps, the lights in the living room suddenly came on. Bai Xinyu leapt in fright and turned his head. His parents were sitting on the couch, their faces solemn.
A chill jolted Bai Xinyu’s heart. He hurriedly looked around the huge living room, but did not see a trace of his cousin. Still, he did not let go of his vigilance. He had only been back for a few days, his mother should not have been done missing him yet, it was not possible that she would turn cold so quickly.
Oh no, Ge must definitely have looked for my parents.
In trepidation, he spoke, “Ah, Dad, Mom, it’s so late at night, why haven’t you slept? And you also didn’t turn on the lights…”
Bai Qingmin pointed at the couch. “Sit here.”
Bai Xinyu’s knees shook a little. He said in a small voice, “Dad, what happened?”
“Come here!”
Bai Xinyu looked pleadingly at his mother, but she turned her head away. He swallowed, then walked over and sat down.
Bai Qingmin glared at him. “Tell me, did you go gambling again after coming home?”
Bai Xinyu looked mournful. “Dad, you’ve wronged me. I’ve only been back a few days, I didn’t gamble.” This time, he was not lying. He had not gambled, not because he was controlling himself, but because he had no money. His dad had been very strict with him recently, and since he was in such a situation, he had no face to go out and play.
Unfortunately, he had lied too many times in the past, and his dad did not believe him at all. His father slapped the table, “Suiying came to our place today saying that you didn’t learn your lesson in Australia. Also, ever since you came back, you’re still mixing around with Zou Hang, those good-for-nothings, gambling and whoring about. Look at yourself, dying your hair yellow, there’s nothing proper about you!”
Bai Xinyu shrank. “Dad, what did my cousin say? What happened to you today? You were still fine earlier…”
He knew his cousin had definitely stirred up the hornet’s nest. Why else would his father’s attitude towards him change so quickly? His parents always listened to his cousin because their family’s main business basically relied on his cousin to sustain it. They were also very close to the point where anything to do with his education, his cousin could make the decision, and so he was scared. He was scared that his cousin would tell his parents about him collaborating with Xiaolinzi to cheat his cousin’s money. If they knew, his dad would definitely beat him to death.
Bai Qingmin inhaled deeply. “You’re always full of lies, who at home would still believe you? Suiying is concerned about you, and that’s why you told us about what you’re doing outside. If not, as a big boss, why would he keep caring about your crap?”
In his heart, Bai Xinyu sighed in relief. It seemed that his cousin did not tell them about the most serious matter, but he still had an ominous feeling. He again looked pleadingly at his mother, signalling her with his eyes.
Li Weizhi nudged at her husband, sighing, “Just get to the main point.”
Bai Qingmin looked at Bai Xinyu in disappointment. Bai Xinyu straightened up nervously, not even daring to breathe too loudly.
Bai Qingmin said, “If Suiying hadn’t told us about it, we wouldn’t have known how notorious you are outside. You’re already 22 this year, how long do you plan on fooling around like this? Always hanging around with people like Zou Hang, can you afford it? Zou Hang’s family has a business worth hundreds of millions, can our family compare to that? If you continue on like this, our Bai family will really have no one left to carry it on.”
Bai Xinyu was anxious. “Dad, don’t say all this. I will change, I want to run a business too. But there are profits and losses in a business, next time I will…”
“Profits my ass! The only reason why you haven’t made a loss is because Suiying is there to watch over you. How much money have you earned yourself? You only know how to have a good time, but do you plan to do this for the rest of your life? In 10, 20 years, when both your mother and I are dead, who will provide you with more money to spend? With our family’s assets, how long can they last before you fritter them away?”
Bai Xinyu felt very aggrieved by the scolding, but at the same time, he felt a little lucky. If his cousin’s way of disciplining him was just to tattle about him to his family, then the punishment was really too light. He really should thank his gods, since his dad’s nagging would only enter one ear and exit from the other. Later on, when he did not have any more money, he could just whine to his mother about it, and his mother would definitely not ignore him. Looking at this, Bai Xinyu tried his best to lower himself and cajoled, “Dad, I’m wrong. I won’t fool around anymore, I will work hard, I won’t just look for fun, I won’t waste any more money. Why don’t I go back to school?”
“Bullshit!” Bai Qingmin was furious.
Bai Xinyu shuddered in fear. He muttered silently, what was going on today? Ever since he was a child, his skin was thick, and his tongue honeyed. Any time he made a mistake, his attitude towards admitting his mistakes was always excellent, all just to try avoiding getting hit and nagged at. Also, if this method did not work, his father would usually calm down after venting his anger, but why was his fury so strong today?
“You even dare to talk about school? I spent money to let you study overseas, but after you finished using your money, you came back home. You can’t even get into the good universities in our country, tell me, having lived for so many years, have you done anything that could make your parents proud? Have you?!”
With his head bowed, Bai Xinyu kept silent. Although his shamelessness was trained to a very high level already, there were still times when he would feel that his pride had been pricked. In fact, it was not that he did not want to study, that he did not want to run a business like his cousin, but it was that he just was not capable of doing so.
Li Weizhi again nudged her husband. “Enough, don’t scold him anymore. Going on and on, would he still be able to continue listening?”
Bai Qingmin turned his anger to his wife. “You still have the cheek to say that? It’s all because of you that’s why he’s like that!”
Li Weizhi’s face changed. “Did our son come from me alone? You were never home, and I was the only one taking care of him when he was young. Now, it’s all my fault?”
Bai Qingmin’s face turned pale. Li Weizhi still wanted to continue, but she choked back her own words before she could work herself up for the tirade. Her eyes reddened a little, “What’s the point of arguing about this now? You better quickly get down to business.”
When the word “business” was mentioned, Bai Xinyu murmured silently again. What was this “business”? Were they going to cut his allowance again?
Bai Qingmin cleared his throat, suppressing his rage a little. “Xinyu, when Suiying was here today, the three of us had a good discussion about your future, and we have a plan.”
Bai Xinyu shivered slightly. He felt that what he was going to hear was definitely not going to be good.
Bai Qingmin looked at his only son, his feelings complicated. He thought that he could still be considered to have some achievements, and his genes were not lousy either. Such a handsome son, with a regular IQ, and a good family background with a healthy upbringing, but why did he grow up to be so useless? He hardened his heart. “We plan on sending you to the military for a few years.”
This was a bolt out of the blue to Bai Xinyu. He nearly knelt down, crying out loud, “Dad—”
Bai Qingmin waved his hand. “Even if you pray to your ancestors, it’s useless. We’ve already decided.”
“Dad!” Bai Xinyu stood up, flying to his father, his eyes full of tears. “Dad, I’m not going. Please, I beg you. I’ll die before I go!”
“Then you can just die!” Bai Qingmin looked at his worthless son, anger and resentment in his heart. He steeled himself and pushed Bai Xinyu away.
“Dad, I beg you, I will really die in military training. You know that I’ve never been able to endure any suffering since I was a child. I don’t want to go, Dad, I will behave properly in the future. I’ll do anything you want me to do, don’t make me go into the army, please, please Dad.”
Bai Qingmin turned his head away, refusing to look at him.
Those were not Bai Xinyu’s pretend tears, they were real. When he had been kicked out of the school in England and came back dejectedly, his parents had thought of sending him to the military then. At that time, he cried, howled, and rolled around on the ground, and thus managed to stay. What a joke, was the military even for humans? Thinking about having to train both in the morning and at night daily, hanging out with a group of fellows like that the whole time, they might as well just kill him. Who would have guessed, he had once managed to dodge this, but it still came back to bite him. This time, his parents even pulled out his past misdemeanours, and it seemed like they had made up their minds. Thinking about his fate, Bai Xinyu sobbed, crying his head off. He saw how determined his dad was, and immediately shifted his target, flying into his mother’s arms. “Mom, can you bear to let me go into the army? If I’m gone, who would go shopping with you, who would bring you out for fun? Mom, say something.”
A conflicted look was on Li Weizhi’s face. Looking at her fair son with red eyes, she was really reluctant to do so. Actually, her husband was right. Her son had been spoilt by her. She had no choice. Her son was her life, and she always let him have his way since he was a child. She knew that it was not good, but she could never resist her son’s whining, and would try her best to give him whatever he wanted. In the end, when her son was this old, he completely had no sense of independence, and instead, became a prodigal son. Today, Suiying had talked to her for a long time, and some of his words were quite harsh, but it also enlightened her, and so she hardened her heart as well.
She sniffed. “Xinyu, you’re really too absurd. This year alone you’ve already spent over 3 million, and although we don’t lack money, we’re also not rolling in cash. We can’t afford your lavish ways. If I could support you for the rest of your life, I’d live with it, but I can’t. Your dad and I will leave someday, and you can’t expect Suiying to look after you forever. If you continue like this, how can we ever feel relieved? This matter… it’s settled. You should just go, we’re all doing this for your sake, we won’t harm you. Joining the military can help with your temperament and let you mature. Also, you’re not suitable to be in business. In the future, we’ll let your cousin use some of his connections and let you have a position in the army. Then, you won’t have to worry about making a living, isn’t that good?”
Tears poured down Bai Xinyu’s cheeks. “Mom, I won’t last there, I really won’t. Mummy, I don’t want to go, quick, persuade Dad, Mummy, Mummy, please.”
Bai Xinyu’s arms tightened around his mother’s waist, begging and pleading. His mom’s biggest soft spot was him. She was his only hope.
Bai Qingmin could not help but kick his son. “Have some backbone, what are you doing?! Stand up!”
Li Weizhi complained, “Enough. Our son’s going to leave already, why are you still so fierce? For all we know, we won’t be able to see him in the next few years. We’ll see how much you’ll miss him then.” Then, her tears started falling too.
Bai Qingmin sighed. He turned his head around and started smoking.
Bai Xinyu cried even harder. “Mummy, how can you bear to let me go? I don’t want to go, you only have one son, doesn’t your heart feel the pain? The military is tough and exhausting, I won’t be able to endure it. Mummy, please, I beg you, talk to my dad, talk to my cousin, don’t let me go in, please, Mummy, please, please.”
Li Weizhi stroked his hair, speaking hoarsely. “Son, I’m reluctant to let you go, but this is not a matter of whether I want to or not. Look at how you’re loafing about. I’m anxious looking at you, you really can’t go on like this. Stop begging me, it’s useless. I’m not the one making the decision here. Even if I am, you… you still have to go. We’re doing this for your own good, you should go obediently, and come back as a proper being.”
Bai Xinyu found that his whines and pleas no longer worked, and cried loudly, “I’m not going, I’m not going! Even if I die, I’m not going!”
Bai Qingmin raged, “If you don’t go, don’t even think about getting a cent from us in the future. Your house, your car, your credit cards, I’ll take them all back from now on. When I’m dead, I’ll donate all my money to an orphanage, you won’t get any of it. If you don’t go, I, Bai Qingmin, would not have a pathetic son like you!”
Bai Xinyu’s sobs stopped, his tears and snot still all over his face. A good-looking face had now turned wretched-looking. That weak and useless unfortunate image roused Bai Qingmin’s anger even higher.
Bai Qingmin viciously stubbed out his barely smoked cigarette in the ashtray and stood up. “This matter is settled. You’re not allowed to go out and play for the next few days. Stay and home and prepare, once Suiying is done with the procedures, we’ll send you off.”
Bai Xinyu’s butt fell right onto the ground, feeling that his world had collapsed.
When Bai Xinyu woke up, he found himself lying on the bed. Looking at that familiar ceiling, he recalled what happened last night. Realising that it was not a nightmare but reality, he could not help but bury his face into his blanket, kicking his legs wildly and moaning away.
Someone knocked on his door. His housekeeper called out to him, “Xinyu, it’s time to wake up for breakfast.”
Bai Xinyu shouted back, “I’m not eating! I’ll just starve to death!”
The housekeeper pushed open the door. She looked at Bai Xinyu who was kicking wildly on his bed and sighed. Walking over to the bed, she patted his shoulder, “Look at you, is there any point in throwing a tantrum? Quick, get up and have some food. Auntie has steamed some crabs for you today, they’re really fresh. Be good, come on up.”
Bai Xinyu twisted himself deeper into his blanket, speaking gloomily, “If I starve to death, I won’t have to go.”
The housekeeper could neither laugh nor cry. “You’re going to the army, not the execution ground.”
Bai Xinyu looked up with his hair like a bird’s nest. His eyes were red, and he spoke tearfully, “How is that any different from the execution ground? Haven’t you watched any of the TV shows? Haven’t you seen what it’s like to be in the army? They wake up before the sun comes up, they run around, hit, and beat each other up the entire day. Locked up in the camp with nowhere to go, how is that a life fit for humans?!”
“Aiyah, it’s not as scary as you think it is.” The housekeeper tidied his hair, “Also, what’s the point of making a fuss? Your parents have already made up their mind. If you really don’t want to go, why don’t you think of another idea?”
Bai Xinyu’s eyes brightened. “What idea? Auntie, you have an idea? Quick, help me persuade my mom.”
“My persuasion won’t work. Why don’t you think about who suggested this?”
Bai Xinyu blinked, “My brother…”
“That’s right. When Young Master Jian came yesterday, I was around as well. I heard everything they said. Young Master Jian settled this by coaxing and frightening them. If you don’t want to go, he has to be the one to give in. There’s no use in begging your parents.”
Bai Xinyu thought that this made sense. However, how would he dare to give Jian Suiying a call when all he wanted to do was hide from him?
The housekeeper smiled, “Quick, get up. Come and eat first. It’ll be easier to think of an idea on a full stomach, then you can continue lying on the bed for the rest of your life.”
Bai Xinyu pouted, fussing, “Deshell the crab for me.”
The housekeeper smiled at him, a face full of tender love. “Sure, sure. We’ll go along with whatever my little ancestor says.”
Bai Xinyu shut himself up at home for the entire day, not going anywhere. As expected, his dad kept his word. Upon waking up, his car and the key to his apartment had disappeared. There was no need to look at his credit cards since they had definitely been frozen. Hiding in his bed, he played his video games only to become more vexed as he kept playing. In the end, he tossed his controller away.
Pondering over it, the housekeeper was right. If he wanted to resolve this matter, he had to get his brother to do it. However, he really did not dare to call Jian Suiying. Just imagining that familiar angry roar, he felt chills down his back, his legs softening. He really could not decide whether he should just go to the army to suffer or let his brother ruthlessly beat him up.
Spending two days in listlessness, when it came to dinnertime, Bai Xinyu still did not go downstairs. He had the housekeeper bring his food to his room. Just as he took a few bites, his door was pushed open. Looking up, his parents were standing there, gazing at him with a complicated look in their eyes.
Bai Xinyu immediately tossed his chopsticks aside and leaned onto his bed. He pretended to look as though he had no appetite, and turned his head, aggrieved.
Li Weizhi grumbled, “What are you doing hiding all day in your room? Can’t you just come downstairs and move around?”
Bai Xinyu replied with a small voice, “I have no energy.”
Bai Qingmin was gruff. “Bullshit, sit up straight.”
Bai Xinyu was still a little afraid of his dad, so he sat up straight.

Bai Qingmin tossed a folder onto his bed. “This is your file. Suiying has already arranged everything for you. You’ll be taking the train tomorrow afternoon at four, I’ll drive you there.”
Bai Xinyu’s eyes widened. “To-tomorrow?” He had not expected that the day would come so fast. He was still hesitating over whether to go on a hunger strike, or come up with another method. Now, before he could even try any of them, he had to go? He felt powerless, as though his sandbag had burst open without him even throwing a punch.
Bai Qingmin looked at him, also a little reluctant. But he hardened his heart, “Tomorrow.”
Bai Xinyu wanted to burst into loud sobs, but suddenly discovered that he had vented too much negative emotions over the past few days, and could not summon the feelings up at that instant. His face immediately crumpled, hopelessness and alarm in his eyes, unable to say a word.
Li Weizhi’s heart ached. “Have a good dinner. Tell me what you’d like to eat tomorrow, I’ll prepare it personally. When you’re in the army, you have to obey your officers properly and get along with other people…” She really could not continue. Thinking that her son was about to leave her side, she was extremely reluctant.
Bai Xinyu knew that there was no point in saying things like he did not want to go now. Looking at the folder on his bed, he really wanted to try killing himself by slamming his head into the wall.
Bai Qingmin said, “You should start packing up. Actually, there’s nothing much to pack. The army doesn’t allow rubbish or junk anyway. There’s the instructions for enlistment in the folder, go take a good look.”
After that, he basically could not pay attention to whatever his parents said next. The only thought in his head was to give his brother a call. He would rather be beaten halfway to death by him than to go into the army!
When his parents left his room, he immediately grabbed his phone and dialled his brother’s number. In the end, despite calling numerous times, no one picked up. He knew his brother was not answering his calls on purpose, and he felt his world shattering, that his life was completely ruined.
The next afternoon, Bai Xinyu was forced into the car, crying and fussing, and driven to the Beijing Railway Station.
At that moment, he was dressed in a camouflage uniform. He had never worn something so cheap in his life, and kept feeling that the material was too stiff, the friction upon his skin very unbearable. On his chest was a stupid looking hibiscus, and his normally stylish hair was pressed flat by his flat cap. His eyes were red, his mood depressed, and he was practically dragged along by his dad.
While walking, Bai Qingmin rebuked him, “We forgot to get you a hair cut. That ridiculous dyed hair… Remember, when you’re there, you should go get your hair fixed first, ok?”
Bai Xinyu pursed his lips, his heart filled with resentment and resistance.
Li Weizhi was wiping her tears non-stop, babbling all sorts of instructions at him. However, with his current mood, how could Bai Xinyu take any of it in? He had already walked onto the platform, and in front of him was a sea of green. The platform was crowded with people as everyone was there to either enlist or send them off. In that seething mess, emotional sobs could also be heard distinctly.
Bai Xinyu had already long lost control of his emotions. Thinking that there were so many brothers who would be suffering through such hardships like him, under the atmosphere of all these farewells and parting messages, he too also wanted to crouch down and cry loudly.
Li Weizhi caressed his face, unable to stop her tears. “Darling, take care of yourself properly when you’re there. Mama is reluctant to let you go, but this is for your own good. Don’t blame us, and don’t blame Suiying.”
Bai Xinyu was still grabbing onto the hope that he could be saved. Tears rolling in his eyes, he said, “Mama, let’s go home. I don’t want to go, I don’t want to leave you.”
Li Weizhi wiped her tears. “Your brother is afraid that you’ll be bullied in the army, and he has looked for someone to take care of you. That child’s family background is very powerful. His grandfather is of the same generation as the old master of the Jian family, with a military background. That child is called Yu Fengcheng, and he is enlisting in the same week as you. Your brother has specially arranged for you to be assigned to the same location as him so that he can take care of you. When you’re in the army, remember to look for him. See, your brother is also doing this for your own good. Don’t be resentful, alright?”
Bai Xinyu did not hear a word. His mind was blank, and felt that the train behind him was the one that was driving towards the slaughterhouse, and all of the new recruits were about to be sent for suffering and torture.
The broadcast system of the platform came on. The announcer started requesting for the enlisting soldiers to board the train according to their numbers.
Steeling his heart, Bai Qingmin pushed Bai Xinyu up the train. Bai Xinyu hugged his dad’s arm, crying and wailing, going straight down to his knees. Li Weizhi was still wiping her tears, and the crowd around them nearly could not take it. Many of those who came to send the soldiers off did feel emotional, but to be like them, looking as though they were on the edge of parting forever, was very rare, and so many people turned to look at them.
Bai Qingmin was thin-skinned, and quickly pushed Bai Xinyu up the train. When Bai Xinyu had one foot on the step of the train carriage, his other foot immediately wanted to run away. But before he could do so, someone suddenly gripped his arm and dragged him powerfully into the carriage. A male voice with a Sichuan accent rang loudly in his ears, “Move in, move in, don’t block the door.” In the next second, he was shoved into the carriage.
Finally managing to steady himself, Bai Xinyu turned his head. The person who dragged him in was a wiry man of at least thirty years old. His facial features were very defined, his skin was darkly tanned. His eyes were bright and piercing, his brows thick and bushy, and did not seem like one that he should provoke easily. Bai Xinyu looked at that man plaintively, then was swept by the other new recruits into the carriage.
Bai Xinyu found a seat next to the window and took it. Once he sat down, he quickly pulled the window open. His parents were standing right by the window, and he stretched his arm out, clutching Li Weizhi’s extended hand, wishing desperately that he could just jump out of the window. However, at that moment, he also understood that he was at the point of no return. He was really about to be dragged to the far off Xinjiang to endure at least two years worth of suffering.
Li Weizhi’s eyes whirled with tears, her heart aching with pain to the point where she could not speak. Bai Xinyu’s sobs never stopped. Plastered against the window, he cried without a break.
The train whistle sounded. It was about to leave.
Bai Xinyu’s rationality snapped. He grasped his mother’s hand, crying out loud, “Ma, I’m not going. I don’t want to go, I want to go home, Ma—”
His voice was too loud and gave the people around him a shock. Other parents who were there to send their children off all gave them a sidelong glance. Other recruits cried because they would miss their family, and no one cried like him as though he was dying.
Bai Qingmin’s face flushed, feeling very ashamed, and pulled Li Weizhi away with him.
Bai Xinyu wailed, “Mama—”
Every three steps she took, Li Weizhi would turn back to take a look. In the end, she was tugged away by Bai Qingmin. Bai Xinyu felt that he had been abandoned, and just as he wanted to shout loudly again, he felt his collar tightened around him. Dragged back, the back of his head knocked against the seat, and he saw stars.
Above him came an angry yell, “What are you doing, crying and wailing?! Still calling out to your mother? You haven’t been fucking weaned yet?!”
Bai Xinyu looked up. It was that man who aggressively dragged him into the train. Ever since he was a child, he had been a cowardly bully, and so when he saw that man’s muscular body and sharp eyes, he shrank into himself.
The man pointed at him, scolding, “We’re just going to the training camp, not the battlefield. What are you crying about?! Can the country depend on a person like you to defend it? Who recruited you?” He yelled, “Who recruited this soldier? Who?!”
After shouting a couple of times, a bespectacled man came running from another carriage. “Lao-Xu, don’t shout, don’t shout, come on, come.” He hooked his arm around that man, pulling and pushing him out of the carriage.
Before leaving, that man again pointed at Bai Xinyu, “Try calling out for your mother again!”
Bai Xinyu was scared motionless. Even when the two people left the carriage, he had yet to recover his senses. The recruits around him who originally had looks of sorrow upon their faces all too did not dare to make a sound, only looking at Bai Xinyu, either in sympathy or in ridicule.
Bai Xinyu felt as though he was sitting on pins and needles. He turned around, facing the window. Secretly pulling out his phone, he continued calling his brother. He would now rather be beaten halfway to death by him than to go into the army.
His phone rang for a short while before he heard a sudden roar behind him. “Is the army a dump?! The parents can’t handle him, so now I have to, what is this? Let me tell you—” The voice cut out—he must have been stopped by someone.
Bai Xinyu trembled, sniffing, feeling that this endless nightmare had just begun.
Someone behind him patted him on the shoulder, “Hey, bro.”
Bai Xinyu turned his head, discovering a boy with small eyes next to him. The corners of his eyes were curved slightly, and he was born looking like he was smiling all the time. Bai Xinyu wiped his tears, “What?”
“Why are you crying so badly? Do you miss your girlfriend?”
Bai Xinyu could not remember which girlfriend he should be missing. What he missed were his good days. He shook his head, “I just don’t want to go.”
“If you don’t want to go, why did you come?” A foolish looking boy across him frowned. “There are 29 of us in my village who wanted to come, and they only chose me. I wanted to get my childhood buddy in too, but he was not allowed.”
Bai Xinyu could not be bothered to pay attention to him. My life of leisure, how would a bumpkin like you know anything about it?
“I’m Qian Liang, which means my future wealth…” Small eyes stretched out his hands, giving the gesture of an ambitious and far off target, “… is bright.”
Bai Xinyu replied distractedly, “I’m… Bai Xinyu.” He was not the least interested in chatting with these people. Although he was useless, he was born lucky and filled with the superiority of a rich man’s son. During all these years, he had been interacting with only wealthy and respectable people, so how could he be satisfied with these village children? He only kept tapping on his phone, praying for his brother to quickly answer his calls. However, he lost hope. His brother seemed to have hardened his heart, and left him to his fate.
A while later, that bespectacled man returned. Clapping his hands together in the carriage, he attracted everyone’s attention. “Hello everyone. From today on, we welcome you to officially being part of the glorious People’s Liberation Army of the Republic of China. The clothes you’re wearing now—they’re not just clothes, but the symbol of the dignity and honour of a soldier. I hope that once you put this uniform on, you’ll remember the morals and dignity of being a soldier. You’ll train hard, fight hard, and contribute your strength for defending the country and its people.”
Bai Xinyu rolled his eyes, and did not take it seriously. He continued looking down and fiddling on his phone, complaining to his friends on WeChat that he had been allocated to the borderlands.
“Let me introduce myself. I’m Wang Shunwei, and I’ll be the instructor for this temporary established company of recruits. The one you saw just now is Xu Chuang, the temporary commander. This time, we’ve recruited over 600 new soldiers from all over the country, and we’re going to bring you to Xinjiang. After 3 months of training, you’ll be assigned to various companies depending on the situation. Of course, during these three months, Commander Xu and I will be in charge of your training. From now on, you will all live and train together, and in the future, you might even be comrades-in-arms entering the battlefield. I hope for as long as your comrades are there, you will treat that place as your home.”
When he finished, the carriage burst into applause. All the recruits had an anticipatory expression towards their lives in the army, and Bai Xinyu was the only one who played with his phone from start till end. After the applause died down, he happened to receive a message. A chime of a bell, it sounded exceptionally piercing in the quiet carriage. Everyone’s eyes turned simultaneously towards him.
Bai Xinyu jerked his head up, looking at his surroundings at a loss. “W-what do you want?”
Wang Shunwei frowned at him.
He was the one in charge of this recruitment. In this company, there were some soldiers that entered through special means, and this undisciplined fellow was one of them. He knew that Xu Chuang was angry, and he was unwilling as well. However, both inside and out of this organisation, there were many of such favours and requests. As long as people were involved, this could not be avoided. The head of the organisation had shoved this case into his arms, so how could he reject it?
Although he was the one who assigned him here, he too found this finicky rich man’s son deplorable. He sighed, “This little comrade, what are you doing?”
Bai Xinyu waved his phone, answering innocently, “What’s wrong?”
Wang Shunwei spoke sternly, “When your superior is talking, you’re not allowed to play on your phone or do anything distracting.”
Bai Xinyu shrugged and shoved his phone into his pocket.
Wang Shunwei saw his dismissiveness, and sneered in his heart. There’s going to be so much hardship for you in the camp, sooner or later, we’ll get rid of all your bad habits.
Wang Shunwei left after he was done speaking.
New recruits filled the carriage. Everyone did not know each other, and were not very talkative at the start. After a few hours, they started to get familiar with each other, and some chit-chatted while others played cards. These children whose average age were around eighteen or nineteen easily opened their hearts to each other, and the carriage became very lively.
There was only one person who was a misfit, and that was Young Master Bai.
Ever since Bai Xinyu got into the train, he had been looking down and playing with his phone. A few hours later, his phone was out of battery, and there were no charging ports available on the train. Vexed, he shut his eyes and tried to sleep.
Qian Liang nudged him, “Hey, do you want to play cards?”
Bai Xinyu shook his head, not bothering to even open his eyes.
Someone quietly said, “Qian Liang, don’t bother with him. Can’t you see that he doesn’t want to acknowledge us?”
Bai Xinyu thought, That’s right, I don’t want to acknowledge you all. I’m very irritated now, don’t come and irritate me some more. Filled with grievances, fear, rage, anxiety, along with the swaying carriage, he fell asleep.
He woke up after some time. The sky had already darkened, and the train attendant was pushing the cart and giving them their dinner.
A packed meal on the train naturally could not be considered fine dining. Bai Xinyu was already in a bad mood, and after looking at the mixture of meat and vegetables on the rice in the box, he lost his appetite. Qian Liang saw that he was not eating, and so he emptied it into his own stomach instead.
At about 9pm in the evening, Bai Xinyu, who had already been sitting for six hours, felt an ache in his buttocks and a soreness in his waist. His neck was unbearably stiff, and he could not help but ask, “Qian Liang, there’s somewhere to sleep on this train, right?”
“I think there is. The first carriage of the train seems like a sleeper car.”
“Then what time are we going there?”
“Huh? Going where?”
“To the sleeper car.”
Qian Liang blinked at him, “We’re not going to the sleeper car.”
Bai Xinyu’s eyes widened. “We’re just going to sit here all the way to Xinjiang?”
“Yes,” Qian Liang answered with a matter-of-fact tone. “The sleeper car is expensive.”
Bai Xinyu could not believe what he was hearing. “How… How many days?”
“It might be two days. We’ll transfer to the train going to Xinjiang at Urumqi, then after the train journey we’ll need to take a car. Anyway, that place is very very far, it’s at the border of our motherland.” Qian Lang was in no way affected by it, “If we play some cards and chat with each other, time will actually pass by very fast.”
Bai Xinyu only felt his vision darken, wishing desperately that he could just faint away.
In the middle of the night, the entire carriage of recruits had all fallen asleep, and some even had ear-splitting loud snores. He was so hungry to the point of dizziness, and remembered that he had some snacks in his luggage given to him by his mother. However, with his aching waist and cramped legs, he was really too lazy to stand up. Also, the two comrades next to him were sleeping like dead pigs, and so he was unable to get out. Having never suffered such punishment in his life before, Bai Xinyu felt that his entire lower half of his body was no longer under his control. He leant his head against the window, trying to sleep for just a bit. However, his neck soon could not take it, and that night, his stomach gurgled in hunger, his entire body uncomfortable, and time ticked on slowly, counting out Young Master Bai’s pain and tears.
Groggily, he thought of how he ended up in this position, and could not help but start to hate Jian Suiying. However, thinking about it, he could not fully blame his brother for it. He should blame his brother’s younger half-brother, Jian Suilin, who shared the same father! If not for Xiao-Linzi egging him on to cheat his brother of his houses, how would he have the guts to do something like that? If he did not do it… If he did not do it, he would not have been able to pay off his gambling debt, and he would most likely be chopped to death by loan sharks. Thinking of this, he really wanted to cry. He yelled out in his heart, Ge, I know I was wrong, please let me go home!
Because he was too tired, Bai Xinyu in the end still managed to fall asleep.
When the sun rose the next morning, everyone in the carriage woke up, starting on their breakfast.
When Bai Xinyu woke up, his entire body was in pain. Moaning as he lay on his seat, he felt that his body was about to fall apart.
Enduring this pain until Urumqi, they all moved to an even older train, heading towards the Karakoram Range. It was very close to the border there, and as it was high in altitude, the recruits in the carriage started showing different degrees of altitude sickness.
Over the past few days, other than going to the toilet, Bai Xinyu never left his seat. His mobile, computer, and iPad had no charge left in their batteries, and he felt that he was just like a hopeless zombie, lying in his seat half-dead. After the two days of hardship, the only thing he was looking forward to was a bed to lie down on. Due to the lack of oxygen, his body that was already uncomfortable felt even worse now. Bai Xinyu’s eyes could not help reddening again, and he sobbed quietly.
Qian Liang and the other recruits around him were already used to his self-pity, and so no one bothered with him.
Gradually, many people too started feeling breathing difficulties. However, these new recruits were all young and healthy, and they could all still endure it.
At this time, Bai Xinyu heard a commotion from the carriage in front. Listening carefully, it seemed that someone was asking if anyone needed the oxygen tank.
Need they even ask? All the recruits here came from places of low sea level. Who didn’t need it?
So, when the door of the carriage was pulled open, and Wang Shunwei led someone in and asked how everyone was, Bai Xinyu immediately shouted, “I need it, I need it, I can barely breathe!”
The entire carriage all turned to look at Bai Xinyu, looking at this coward who had been acting holier-than-thou throughout the entire journey, huddling in his seat ignoring everyone, yet had been secretly crying at night. Their eyes were full of ridicule.
In front of Wang Shunwei was a tall and big man. He too turned his head after hearing the shout, and looked at Bai Xinyu. Bai Xinyu happened to be looking up as well, and their eyes met.
The man in front of him had very defined features, his brows thick and strong, and was so handsome that he looked as though he had stepped out from a movie. His skin was so smooth no flaws could be seen, and his short hair stood up stiffly, looking very valiant and heroic in bearing, clean and neat. His camouflage uniform wrapped his firm and tall body, and it was extremely attractive.
Bai Xinyu could not explain why his breathing suddenly stopped. This person’s eyes were too sharp, too challenging. Pinned down by his gaze, his heart panicked and he did not dare to look at him again.
He felt the burning eyes of the crowd around him, and started feeling like a fish out of water. There clearly were many people whose breathing had been affected already, but no one took the initiative to request for oxygen. What were they doing? Testing their endurance?
That person raised his chin slightly. “Is there any comrade in this carriage who needs oxygen? There’s only a limited supply, and everyone is young and strong. If you can endure it, just endure it for now, and try to leave the supply for people who really need it.” Although his words were addressed to the entire carriage, his eyes were staring straight at Bai Xinyu, a little contemptuous.
Many people laughed quietly, and Bai Xinyu’s face burned.
Behind that person was Wang Shunwei, and he spoke, “Continue walking. Don’t block the way, we’ll go and take a look in the next carriage.
That person looked away from Bai Xinyu, continuing ahead.
Embarrassing himself in front of so many people, Bai Xinyu really could not take it lying down. All his despondency, hate and rage that he had been accumulating over the past few days flamed up because of this person’s mocking words, and he found a place to vent all his negative emotions. Just as that person was about to walk past him, Bai Xinyu stood up abruptly, yelling arrogantly, “How much is a tank? I’ll donate a hundred of them to you! If you’re unwilling to give up even a few breaths of oxygen and not allowing people to use it, then why even bother asking?”
The entire carriage fell silent.

That person’s eyes narrowed slightly, carefully observing him.
Bai Xinyu was 182cm, but was still quite a few centimetres shorter than this person. He felt a sort of oppressive aura coming off him, and this aura was different from the brother he was most afraid of. No matter how angry his brother got, he would not really do anything to him. However, this person in front of him really seemed capable of strangling him, and it was really fucking frightening.
Bai Xinyu shrunk quietly, but he since had already stood up, he felt that it was too shameful to just sit down like this. Furthermore, this person did not seem on planning to let him go.
The next second, Bai Xinyu only saw a blur, and that person had already taken two steps to stop right in front of him. Yanking him away from his seat, he felt his head knock into that person’s face, and a manly scent wafted into his nose. Before he could react, he felt a pain around his arms. His arms had been pulled behind him by that person, his wrists gripped tightly by just one hand.
Bai Xinyu shouted in alarm, “What are you doing?” He struggled as best as he could, but the hand around his wrists was like an iron bar, it was very strong. The owner of this hand clearly looked younger than him, but why was his strength so frightening? The more he struggled, the more his wrists hurt, and he howled in pain.
That man ignored him, dragging and pushing him to the head of the carriage. Kicking the toilet door open, he cruelly pushed him inside.
A pungent stench blew into his face, and Bai Xinyu nearly vomited. As he was urgently trying to steady himself so as not to end up kissing the wall of the toilet, the door slammed shut behind him. He turned and lunged at it, but discovered that the handle had been jammed by a broom.
A mocking voice could be heard from outside. “There’s a lot of oxygen in there, you can take your time breathing it in.”
From the carriage came a roar of laughter.
When had Bai Xinyu ever suffered such grievances? He was so angry he started crying, pounding on the door. “You fucking bastard, let me out!”
He heard Wang Shunwei speaking unhurriedly, “Aiyah, don’t make such a fuss. Xiao-Yu, you can’t do this, quick, let him out.”
Next was Xu Chuang’s loud voice. “Don’t let him out. Keep the door closed. This bugger needs some education. All of you, stop laughing. Sit there properly, don’t look!”
When Xu Chuang was done berating, no sound could be heard from outside. Bai Xinyu knocked on the door for a long time, cursing and swearing, but everyone ignored him. Recalling that bastard’s mocking face, Young Master Bai really wanted to bite him to death!
After being locked in the stinking toilet for an hour, someone finally let him out.
Bai Xinyu this time had become obedient, and returned to his seat without saying a word, only silently cursing that idiot who locked him in the toilet.
Qian Liang prodded at him in concern. “Hey, are you alright?”
Bai Xinyu shook his head, not wanting to see his face. He felt that the entire carriage was laughing at him.
Qian Liang spoke, “Of all people to antagonise, you had to antagonise him.”
Bai Xinyu had just finished crying, and his voice was still hoarse. With a nasally voice, he sounded extremely aggrieved, “What about him?”
“I heard that person has a very impressive background. He got into military school, but chose not to enroll in it. Instead, he’s coming to Kunlun Mountain to suffer. Say, what exactly is he thinking?”
Bai Xinyu gritted his teeth. “He’s probably sick in the head.” How else could he have done such a beastly thing?
The next day, they finally disembarked from the train and were now shoved into the military trucks. By then, they were already in the Kunlun Mountains, and even though it was still summer, the temperature was low and the climate dry. Bai Xinyu felt that his every breath needed a lot of strength. His altitude sickness was not as serious as yesterday, but he was not any more at ease. Many people on the truck fitter than him were vomiting and having diarrhoea. Compared to them, he could still be considered a little more fortunate.
Again enduring an eight-hour journey on the truck, Bai Xinyu felt as though he was a livestock about to be slaughtered, on its way to the slaughterhouse. Also, this livestock was in a half-dead state.
The camp was built in a very rural area, and there was no telephone signal. Behind the camp was a barren mountain, and it faced an endless mountainous forest. The road here was just like cheese, pits and potholes everywhere, and Bai Xinyu’s legs and stomach were shaken non-stop. Looking at this view, he felt that he should cry, but he discovered that he no longer had enough tears to do so.
The instructions from the officer had all been passed down during the long journey. Seeing that these new recruits were all tired, he gave them their dorm assignments and let them rest.
Carrying his luggage, Bai Xinyu dragged his feet towards the dorm. He also wanted to quickly get onto the bed and have a good sleep, but he really had no energy. There was no part of him that was not aching, and the luggage in his hand was really too fucking heavy. Young Master Bai had never done any housework in his life before. Even if a broom fell onto the floor, he would not pick it up. When would he ever have lifted something so heavy before?
Stumbling to the door of the dorm, he was about to step inside before someone bumped heavily into his shoulder. He nearly ended up smashing his face into the wall.
No matter how slow his brain was, he knew that with the amount of strength used, it was definitely deliberate. He turned his head in rage, only to see a pair of eyes filled with derision and disdain. Those eyes were narrow, long and bright. As the light ebbed and flowed in them, there was an inexplicable charm to them. However, despite this face being very good-looking, the person could not be anymore wicked. This was the person who had locked him in the toilet on the train, the bastard who caused him to be unable to eat for the entire day.
Although Bai Xinyu really wanted to bite him, he was also a little scared of him. Ever since he was a child, his courage was only that big, and he often bullied the weak while he was afraid of the strong. When he met someone stronger than him, he would not even dare to fart in his presence.
That person snorted. “Sissy.”
Bai Xinyu glared at him hatefully, but did not dare to talk back. What should he do? A tyrant had appeared so quickly, and it seemed like he was fixated on him. What was even scarier was that the person had entered his dormitory! Bai Xinyu’s vision darkened, nearly falling onto the ground. He was really too unlucky, to actually be in the same room as this jinx. Like this, would he not be tortured to death?!
Bai Xinyu stood mournfully at the door for a long time, before accepting the reality and walking in. He decided to look for an officer to change his dorm assignment.
When that person saw him enter, he revealed a row of straight white teeth, smiling at him.
Bai Xinyu shuddered in fright, hurriedly turning his head away.
The dorm was just like what he saw on the television, a room where dozens of people could sleep inside. There were four rows of beds, an aisle in the middle, and each bed in every row was very close to the other. Thinking about how twenty-odd people were going to squeeze into the room to sleep, Bai Xinyu felt nauseous.
Bai Xinyu saw that the jinx had selected his bed, and he quickly found one as far away from him as possible, tossing his luggage onto it.
Just as he put his luggage down and was about to unzip it to look for food, someone pulled at his collar behind his neck. A derisive voice sounded above him, “Who allowed you to sleep here?”
Bai Xinyu turned around in great trepidation and saw that jinx.
That jinx pointed at a bed inside, “Sleep there.”
Bai Xinyu looked at it. Fuck, it was right next to this jinx’s bed. Speaking crudely, if this jinx was to turn over, he would be able to roll onto him. If he slept there, his life would definitely be shortened by ten years. He hurriedly shook his head, “I’ll just… sleep here.”
The mouth of the jinx curled slightly, revealing a wicked smile. Without any courtesy, he picked up his luggage, grabbed his collar, and dragged him to the bed next to his. Throwing the luggage down, he allowed him no other choice. “You’re sleeping here.”
Bai Xinyu looked at the other people around him, they all looked like they were enjoying the show, and no one was willing to lend a hand. He only felt his vision turn black, and he really wanted to cry.
When that jinx finally let go, Bai Xinyu scrambled out of the room.
