The Last Seven Minutes

she

Like the earth joyfully welcoming the long-lost sunlight after many days, the blue morning beautifully embraced the young rays of the sun.

It was time for Madhavi to get ready for office.

“Amma, where is my tiffin box?”

Even asking such a simple question was no longer possible.

Because her mother had gone far away from her forever.

The moment Madhavi was born, her father abandoned them simply because she was a girl.

As long as her mother was alive, she did everything she could to educate her. The only degree Madhavi managed to complete was a B.A.

After finishing her studies, Madhavi dreamed of getting a job and supporting her mother. She wished to buy her silk sarees, sandals, and all the little things her mother had denied herself for years.

But everything ended too soon.

Her mother was gone.

Madhavi fought through life on her own. As much as possible, she never wanted to depend on anyone or stretch her hand before others. She chose to live only through her own hard work and determination.

Nandini, Madhavi’s friend, was born into a wealthy family.

Her father was a businessman, her mother a doctor, and her elder brother was also a doctor. She had every comfort and luxury in life.

Even so, while studying in Chennai, she stayed with Madhavi and worked alongside her as a companion and support to her.

Nandini was a good-hearted woman. Beautiful, talented, intelligent — she possessed everything. Yet she remained a true friend to Madhavi.

Even though Nandhini and Madhavi worked in different offices, their mornings always began together.

The same road, the same bus stop, the same laughter — amidst the rush of city life, they had created a small world of their own.

That morning too began like any other.

As they were getting ready for work, Nandhini’s phone suddenly rang.

“Who is it?” Madhavi asked while fixing her hair.

“My brother, Naren…” Nandhini replied as she answered the call.

Within seconds, the color drained from her face.

“Dad isn’t well… they’ve admitted him to the hospital…” she said in a trembling voice, frozen in panic.

“I’ll come with you,” Madhavi said immediately, getting ready to leave with her.

But when they reached downstairs near the vehicle, Madhavi suddenly remembered something important.

There was an auditing session at the office that day — a meeting she absolutely couldn’t miss.

After a moment of hesitation, she spoke softly,

“Nandhini… you go ahead first. I’ll finish the auditing work and come to the hospital by afternoon.”

Nandhini quietly nodded.

Fear and confusion filled her eyes.

“Drive carefully…” Madhavi said before stepping away from the vehicle.

Unable to even return a small smile, Nandhini simply replied,

“Okay…”

Then she slowly drove away.

Neither of them knew…

that within the next few minutes, their lives were about to change forever.

That morning, Madhavi got ready for work and stood at the bus stop as usual.

But without Nandhini beside her, the journey felt strangely empty. Normally, their conversations would fill the morning with energy and laughter, but today there was only silence and a quiet sense of loneliness.

Since she had left home a little earlier than usual, she felt somewhat relieved, hoping she would at least reach the office on time.

But the bus was late, and time slowly kept slipping away.

At that moment, quite unexpectedly, Geetha — who worked with her — arrived there.

Stopping her scooter near Madhavi, Geetha said,

“It’s getting late… come, let’s go.”

At that moment, it felt like a great help to Madhavi.

Without hesitation, she left with Geetha.

Within fifteen minutes, they reached the office.

But as soon as she walked inside, Madhavi realized that they had still arrived later than office hours, and a small feeling of disappointment settled in her heart.

After parking her vehicle, Geetha told Madhavi that she would be back in a moment and walked away.

“You go ahead…” Madhavi said as she hurried toward the lift and quickly pressed the button.

Lost in her anxious and hurried state of mind, she didn’t even notice a young man standing behind her.

A few moments later, he politely stepped closer and asked softly,

“Excuse me… could you please give me a little space?”

But just hearing a male voice so suddenly startled Madhavi badly.

“Ahhh!” she screamed in fear.

Still shaken by the sudden shock, she immediately began complaining angrily,

“If women are alone somewhere, men always come and disturb them!”

Without even giving him a chance to explain himself, Madhavi continued speaking in anger.

Hearing the noise, Geetha quickly rushed back and tried to calm her down.

“Madhavi… relax… what happened?” she asked gently.

But the young man standing there understood absolutely nothing.

He stood there silently, completely confused as to why simply asking for a little space had turned into such a huge misunderstanding.

Geetha awkwardly turned toward the young man and said,

“Sorry… she gets angry very quickly,” before stepping into the lift along with Madhavi.

But Madhavi still hadn’t calmed down.

“Why are you even talking to him?” she muttered irritably at Geetha.

A few moments later, they entered the office.

As soon as they walked in, a piece of good news reached Madhavi’s ears.

The Managing Director, who was supposed to come for the audit that day, apparently wouldn’t be coming after all.

The moment she heard that, her heart instantly felt lighter.

“Then I can apply for leave today and go visit Nandhini’s father at the hospital…” she thought happily to herself.

At that moment, she had no idea that bad news was waiting just behind that moment of relief.

Hurriedly, she went to Geetha and said,

“I need to take leave today.”

Geetha hesitated for a moment before replying,

“But… they’re saying the boss’s son is coming for the audit instead…”

The moment she heard those words, Madhavi froze in shock.

Madhavi stood there quietly, disappointed that she might not be able to take leave that day.

Just then, Akhila arrived.

She was the kind of person who somehow knew everything happening in the office — who spoke to whom, what happened where, and every little piece of gossip. That was exactly why everyone in the office called her “The Newspaper.”

That day, she looked especially excited.

After all, she had gathered fresh information about the Managing Director’s son.

Curious, Geetha immediately asked,

“Tell me… what’s he like?”

As though she had been waiting for someone to ask, Akhila eagerly began talking.

“His name is Madhavan… apparently he completed his MBA in London. Very smart too. They say there isn’t a single woman who hasn’t fallen for him…” she continued, going on and on about him.

Listening to all this, Madhavi frowned.

“Oh, so his name is Madhavan? That explains everything,” she said sarcastically.

After a brief pause, she muttered again,

“And as if that wasn’t enough, he’s rich too…”

With that, she walked away from them and quietly sat down at her desk.

But she didn’t know one thing…

Within the next few hours, the very same “Madhavan” she had spoken about with such annoyance was going to change her life completely.

Ep-2

Even after returning to her seat, Madhavi couldn’t forget what had happened in the lift.

The young man’s face kept replaying in her mind again and again.

At first, she had been angry. But after some time, a sense of guilt slowly began to grow within her.

She started realizing that the mistake had actually been hers.

He had simply asked for a little space, yet she had unnecessarily turned it into a huge issue. Thinking about it made her feel deeply uncomfortable.

One side of her mind whispered,

“I should apologize to him…”

But the other side — her stubbornness — refused to accept it.

After struggling with those thoughts for a while, Madhavi finally decided to forget everything and focus on her work.

She carefully arranged all the files needed for the audit.

Just then, the office peon came to her desk and said,

“Madam… the manager asked you to bring the audit files.”

“Okay,” Madhavi replied before picking up the files and heading toward the manager’s room.

But when she entered, the manager wasn’t there.

Immediately, she turned back at the peon with irritation.

Feeling awkward, he quickly said,

“Sorry, madam… he’s in the MD’s room.”

“The MD has arrived?”

The shock froze Madhavi for a moment.

The very next second, her heart began beating rapidly.

“What if he overheard everything I said to Geetha…?” she wondered nervously.

With growing tension, Madhavi slowly walked toward the MD’s room.

But…

The shock waiting for her there was far greater than anything she had imagined.

The young man who had been in the lift with her… was Madhavan.

Standing beside him was the manager, Chandran.

The moment Madhavi saw him, her heart froze in shock.

Even though she had entered the room, she stood there like a statue, forgetting even to ask for permission to come in.

Noticing her condition, Chandran gently said,

“Miss Madhavi… please come in.”

Only then did she slowly step inside with hesitation.

Madhavan silently watched her.

The tension on her face and the confusion in her eyes were clearly visible to him.

After a few moments of silence, he calmly said,

“Please give me the files.”

The moment she heard those words, Madhavi’s nervousness only grew stronger.

Maybe it was because she had come to work without eating properly that morning…

Or maybe it was the shock of unexpectedly seeing Madhavan there…

The next second, her head began to spin.

Slowly, she started collapsing to the floor.

The sight startled Madhavan instantly.

To him, it felt as though a beautiful ancient statue had fallen and shattered right before his eyes.

From that very moment…

he had no idea that his own heart, too, was going to break in the same way because of her.

When Madhavi opened her eyes, she found herself lying in a white hospital room.

For a few moments, she couldn’t understand anything.

Slowly turning her gaze, she noticed Narendra standing nearby.

Trying to hide his smile, he teased,

“What happened, Madhavi? Did you forget to eat the food you cooked this morning?”

His words only confused her even more.

Without understanding anything, she widened her eyes in confusion.

The next moment, her eyes fell on Nandhini, who was standing beside him.

Seeing both Nandhini and Narendra near her, Madhavi couldn’t believe it for a second.

She didn’t know whether it was reality or just a dream.

“I’m… in the hospital?” she asked softly.

Seeing her condition, Nandhini smiled gently.

“You said you’d come to the hospital to see my father… but I never expected you to come here as a patient,” she said with gratitude and a hint of playful teasing.

Hearing that, Madhavi turned her face away in embarrassment.

But inside her mind, one question kept repeating itself over and over again…

“Who brought me to the hospital…?”

Ep 3

At that moment, Naren and Lakshmi were quietly smiling to themselves.

Just then, the door of the room opened, and Madhavan walked inside.

The moment he saw him, Naren casually called out,

“Hey Madhava, come in…”

Hearing that, Madhavi became even more confused.

She looked at Nandhini with questioning eyes.

Understanding her confusion, Nandhini slowly sat beside Madhavi and began explaining softly.

“When you fainted… it was Madhavan who carried you to the hospital.”

Madhavi looked at her in complete shock.

“While he was bringing you here, my brother Naren called and said Dad’s chest pain had suddenly become worse. When we arrived at the hospital and saw you unconscious, we were really frightened…”

After a brief silence, Nandhini continued,

“After admitting Dad into the ICU, we came to your room. Even now, Madhavan has gone out to buy medicines for you…”

Hearing all this, Madhavi’s heart grew restless.

The memory of misunderstanding him and humiliating him that morning began hurting her once again.

Slowly, her eyes turned toward Madhavan, who was standing near the doorway.

But…

she still didn’t have the courage to look directly into his face.

After a few moments of silence, Madhavi hesitantly looked at Nandhini.

“How do you know Madhavan?” she asked softly.

The moment she asked the question, Nandhini’s mother, Lakshmi, smiled gently.

“Madhavan’s father is actually a close friend of Nandhini’s father,” she began explaining.

Madhavi listened quietly.

“As soon as they heard about his health condition, they came here to see him. That’s why Madhavan had come to the office as well…”

After saying that, Lakshmi added softly,

“You both talk…” before slowly walking out of the room.

Silence once again filled the room.

But inside Madhavi’s mind, thoughts refused to stop.

The way she had misunderstood him that morning…

The anger with which she had spoken to him…

Just remembering it now filled her heart with an uncomfortable sense of guilt.

After a while, Naren left the room to attend to his patients.

Now, only Nandhini, Madhavi, and Madhavan remained inside the room.

Breaking the silence playfully, Nandhini looked at Madhavan and said,

“What, sir? You scared my Madhavi so much!”

Immediately, Madhavan laughed softly and replied,

“When did I scare her? She was the one who got scared after seeing me! Honestly… I think I was more frightened than she was.”

As he said that, he slowly walked closer to Madhavi.

Then, slightly lowering his head, he asked gently,

“How are you feeling now, Miss Madhavi?”

Madhavi simply looked at him quietly without answering.

The next moment, Madhavan tried to suppress his smile and said teasingly,

“Sorry… but if you ever plan to scold me again, at least warn me beforehand this time. I need a little time to prepare myself mentally.”

The moment she heard that, Madhavi couldn’t hold back her laughter anymore.

For the first time, a natural smile bloomed across her face.

Seeing all this, a quiet happiness bloomed inside Nandhini’s heart.

Feeling that she shouldn’t become a disturbance between them anymore, she softly said,

“I’ll go check on Dad…” and quietly left the room.

Silence once again filled the space.

After a few hesitant moments, Madhavi finally turned toward Madhavan.

“Sorry…” she said softly while trying to get up from the bed.

But the moment she slightly lost her balance, Madhavan immediately rushed toward her.

“It’s okay… slowly,” he said gently as he helped her sit properly.

Once she was comfortable, Madhavan smiled lightly.

“To be honest… the mistake was mine,” he said.

Madhavi looked at him in surprise.

“I shouldn’t have suddenly come and stood behind you like that. I shouldn’t have spoken so unexpectedly and frightened you. So… you should be the one forgiving me,” he said with genuine sincerity.

Hearing his words, Madhavi could hardly believe it.

From everything Akila had said, she had imagined him to be an arrogant, prideful rich man.

But the way he spoke… and the way he behaved… was completely the opposite.

Lost in those thoughts, Madhavi quietly looked at him.

And in that gaze…

for the first time, there was no hatred.

Only a new curiosity was slowly beginning to bloom within her.

And seeing that smile brought an unexplainable sense of peace to Madhavan’s heart.
