The Sword Saint's Last Sacrifice

Chapter 1: the women beneath the snow

In the cultivation world, there existed a saying:

When the heavens grow silent, the Sword Saint walks.

No one knew who first spoke those words.

No one dared claim them either.

Because she truly existed.

The woman who split mountains with a single draw of her blade.

The woman who stood unmoving beneath heavenly tribulation while others knelt and begged the skies for mercy.

The woman who reached the peak of cultivation before most sect masters had grown their first beard.

Her name was Shen Yuhuan.

People feared her. Worshipped her. Envied her.

But none of them knew one thing.

Shen Yuhuan was tired.

Not the kind of tired sleep could cure.

It was the exhaustion that came after centuries of surviving.

After burying comrades.

After winning battles that no longer felt meaningful.

After standing so high above the world that nothing could touch her anymore.

Even the snow felt dull.

That winter, she descended from the Frost Veil Mountain alone.

No disciples followed her.

No spirit beasts accompanied her.

Not even her sword made a sound.

The streets below the mountain were lively despite the cold. Merchants shouted over one another, children ran through puddles of melted snow, and lanterns swayed gently beneath the evening wind.

Shen Yuhuan walked through them like a ghost.

Until she saw him.

A boy no older than ten crouched beside a broken stall, shielding a stray dog beneath his thin body while two older boys kicked mud at him.

“Move, beggar!”

The child said nothing.

One kick struck his shoulder hard enough to knock him sideways, yet his first instinct was to protect the trembling dog in his arms.

Shen Yuhuan stopped walking.

The older boys froze the moment they noticed her robes.

White as burial cloth.

Silver-threaded sleeves.

The crest of Frost Veil Mountain resting near her shoulder like a warning.

They fled immediately.

The boy remained on the ground.

He looked up at her carefully, dark eyes sharp despite the dirt smeared across his face.

Not fear.

Caution.

Like a stray animal expecting the next blow.

“…Why protect the dog?” she asked.

The boy glanced down at the shivering creature.

“Because nobody else will.”

Such a small answer.

Yet something inside her chest stirred painfully.

Shen Yuhuan had heard thousands of grand speeches in her lifetime.

Declarations of immortality.

Promises of vengeance.

Oaths sworn beneath blood and heaven.

None remained in her memory.

But this simple sentence did.

Because nobody else will.

The woman who had not felt warmth in centuries removed her outer cloak and draped it over the child.

The boy stared at her in shock.

“You’ll freeze,” he whispered.

“I won’t.”

She held out one pale hand.

“Come with me.”

The snow continued to fall around them.

The boy hesitated for a long time before finally placing his small hand into hers.

And neither of them knew then...

That this single moment would become the beginning of a tragedy spoken of for generations.

Chapter 2: A sword for the Lonely

Chapter 2: A sword for the lonely

Chapter 2 — A Sword for the Lonely

The boy’s name was Lin Yue.

He spoke little during the journey up Frost Veil Mountain.

Servants whispered when Shen Yuhuan brought him back. Elders openly questioned her judgment.

“A child from the streets?”

“A mortal with no background?”

“The Sword Saint has finally lost her mind.”

Shen Yuhuan ignored every word.

Lin Yue was given clean robes, warm food, and a room larger than the shack he once slept in. Yet for weeks, he remained tense whenever anyone approached him.

He hid leftovers beneath his pillow.

Flinched at sudden movement.

Woke from nightmares almost every night.

Shen Yuhuan never asked what happened to him before she found him.

Instead, she sat outside his room during storms because she noticed he slept easier knowing someone was there.

Spring arrived slowly upon Frost Veil Mountain.

And for the first time in centuries, Shen Yuhuan found herself waiting for tomorrow.

Lin Yue followed her everywhere.

At first, he merely watched her train.

The disciples practiced with rigid discipline beneath the courtyard while Shen Yuhuan stood among falling plum blossoms, her sword moving so beautifully it scarcely resembled violence.

One swing.

The clouds split apart.

Another.

An entire frozen lake cracked down the center.

Lin Yue stared with wide eyes.

“Can a person really become that strong?”

Shen Yuhuan sheathed her blade.

“Yes.”

“Then… can you teach me?”

She looked at him quietly.

Most people sought power for glory.

For revenge.

For immortality.

But Lin Yue looked at the sword the way starving people looked at food.

Like he needed strength simply to survive.

So Shen Yuhuan nodded once.

And from that day onward, the greatest swordswoman beneath the heavens became a teacher.

Years passed.

Lin Yue grew quickly.

He learned faster than anyone she had ever seen.

At thirteen, he defeated senior disciples.

At fifteen, sect elders praised him as a once-in-a-century genius.

At seventeen, people began calling him the Heir of Frost Veil Mountain.

But talent alone was never what frightened Shen Yuhuan.

It was devotion.

Lin Yue followed her with unwavering trust.

When she taught him sword forms, he practiced until his hands bled.

When she meditated beneath winter waterfalls, he sat beside her until his lips turned blue from cold.

When rumors spread that she was cold-hearted and incapable of love....

Lin Yue once drew his sword against an entire banquet hall for insulting her.

“You gave me a life,” he told her afterward, blood dripping from his sleeve. “So I’ll spend mine protecting yours.”

Shen Yuhuan said nothing then.

But that night, for the first time in centuries......

She smiled.

Only a little.

Only where no one could see.

Chapter 3 N 4 : The thing called Attachment

People began to notice the change in Shen Yuhuan long before she did.

The Sword Saint who once ignored every gathering now attended disciple ceremonies because Lin Yue was there.

The woman who once wandered the world alone now returned to Frost Veil Mountain before sunset because someone waited for her.

She even remembered small things.

Lin Yue disliked bitter medicine.

Preferred training at dawn rather than night.

Always tapped his fingers twice against his sword hilt while thinking.

Tiny details.

Dangerous details.

Because immortals were not supposed to grow attached.

One winter evening, Lin Yue found her standing at the edge of the mountain cliffs.

Snow danced through silver moonlight around her robes.

“You’re thinking too much again,” he said as he approached.

Shen Yuhuan did not look at him.

“For cultivators, attachment is weakness.”

“Then become weak.”

The answer came too quickly.

As if he had already decided it long ago.

She finally glanced toward him.

Lin Yue smiled softly.

“You spent your whole life carrying the world alone. Isn’t it exhausting?”

Something inside her chest tightened painfully.

No one had ever asked her that before.

Not once in centuries.

Sect elders admired her strength.

Enemies feared her sword.

Disciples worshipped her talent.

But this boy...

This child she had picked up from the streets....

Looked at her like she was simply human.

And perhaps that was the beginning of the end.

Chapter 4 — Cracks Beneath the Ice

Rumors spread across the cultivation world.

The Heavenly Dao Treasury would soon open.

A sacred realm said to contain artifacts capable of defying fate itself.

Every great sect prepared for it.

Including Frost Veil Mountain.

“You will not go,” Shen Yuhuan told Lin Yue immediately.

He frowned. “Why?”

“The treasury awakens greed in people. Even righteous cultivators become monsters there.”

“I can protect myself now.”

“That is exactly why I worry.”

Lin Yue stared at her for a moment before laughing softly.

“You still see me as that starving child.”

“You are.”

The answer surprised even her.

For a brief second, something unreadable crossed his expression.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something colder.

But it vanished quickly.

“I won’t die so easily, Master.”

Master.

He still called her that after all these years.

And Shen Yuhuan.....foolishly.....believed that meant something permanent.
