The girl didn't scream when they dragged her.
She had learned early that screaming only made them enjoy it more.
Iron shackles on her wrists. Iron collar at her throat. Every step the metal burned cold against her skin – a constant reminder of what she couldn't do.
The vampire guard who held her chain didn't even look at her. Just walked ahead like he was leading livestock to a pen. Behind her two more guards. Laughing about something she couldn't hear properly.
The drug they'd given her at the border made everything slightly distant. Sounds. Edges. Her own heartbeat.
She focused on the floor instead. Stone. Old. She recognized the carvings beneath the dirt — dragon script. Ancient. This building had been theirs once.

**yanked the chains hard**

**stumbling and struggling to walk**

**They pushed her through a heavy door.**
The noise hit her first. Voices. Laughter. The particular sound of wealthy people being entertained.
Then the smell — blood. Old and new both. Soaked into the stone floor so deep it would never come out.
The arena was small. Intimate almost. Stone seats arranged in a circle. Maybe thirty or forty nobles. Men and women both. Dressed beautifully. Holding crystal glasses.
They looked at her the way people look at something they've already decided the value of.

Nothing answered.
The fire inside her was there — she could feel it — but the iron sat on top of it like a stone on a flame. Pressing. Suppressing.

A vampire dropped into the arena floor from the opposite side. No weapons. He didn't need any.

**She got up again. Slower.**
Above her the nobles leaned forward. This was what they'd come for. Not the blood yet. This first.
Watching something refuse to break before it broke.
