It's Not the End of Us
Echoes of a Goodbye
Ami is looking at the mirror adjusting her look
Ami
Two years of rejections, late-night studying and part time shifts.........Today is the day it all pays off. I can do this.
Ami running down the stairs of her apartment complex, a purse slung over her shoulder, clutching her resume folder tightly against her chest.
Ami
If I catch the 9:15 train, I'll have exactly fifteen minutes to spare. Perfect.
Ami
Just need to pass the turnstile—
Ami violently collides into someone walking from the opposite direction. Her phone slips from her hand, and the papers in her folder fly into the air.
Ami
I am so sorry. I didn't see you coming
Ami bends down hastily to grab her resume, but stops dead in her tracks. Her eyes widen in absolute shock.
A boy with a black jacket and black pant is in front of her(Ren)
Ami
(In her mind) :Three years ago, we said goodbye. I thought the story was over. I thought the fire had turned to ash.
Suddenly, a blinding light cuts through the tension from the side. The loud, metallic roar of an approaching train echoes through the station stairs right next to them.
The sudden noise breaks Ami out of her trance. She looks at her phone on the ground—the lock screen shows 9:14 AM.
Ami (Thought): The train... my
Ami
(Thought): The train... my interview... my future.
Ren doesn't move an inch, but his eyes track her as she rushes past him toward the turnstiles. His jaw is clenched.
Ami bursts through the train doors just as they begin to slide shut.
From inside the moving train, Ami presses her hand against the glass window, looking back at the platform.
Through the blurred glass of the speeding train, we see Ren standing exactly where she left him on the street, looking up at the departing train. On the ground near his boot, one leftover piece of paper from her folder remains behind.
Ami
But looking into his eyes just now... I realized. Some endings are just pauses we misunderstood.
The weight of silence
[Location: Shinjuku Station Platform - Seconds after the train leaves]
[Ren standing frozen on the platform, his eyes fixed on the retreating lights of the train.]
Ren
(Thinking) She just left. Just like that.
[He watches the platform, his expression tightening.]
Ren
(Thinking) Walking away in the middle of a moment—that’s always been your old habit, hasn't it, Ami?
Ren
(Thinking) You run the second things get too real. You always have.
[He glances down, noticing the piece of paper she dropped. He picks it up slowly, his fingers brushing the edge of the resume.]
[Location: A sterile office building - The same day]
Interviewer
"Ami? You seem distracted. Is everything alright?"
[Ami sits stiffly in the chair, her hands hidden beneath the table, gripping her knees to stop the trembling.]
Ami
: "I... I apologize. I think the commute was just more hectic than I expected."
Ami
(Thinking) Just keep it together. Don't think about the station. Don't think about his face.
Interviewer
"We’re looking for someone who can maintain composure under pressure. You don't seem like yourself."
She bites her lower lip, tasting a hint of iron, forced to look the interviewer in the eye
Ami
"I understand. I’m ready to prove that I can be the person you need."
[Location: Ren’s Apartment - Late Afternoon]
[Ren sitting on the edge of his bed, staring at the crumpled resume page he picked up from the platform.]
Ren
(Thinking) I thought three years would be enough to bury the past.
[He sets the paper down on his desk, right next to a calendar marking three years of silence.]
(Thinking) Seeing your eyes at the station today... you looked just as terrified as I felt.
[Ami standing on her balcony, looking out at the city lights. She’s finally changed out of her professional clothes.]
Ami
(Thinking) 9:14 AM. That’s when the world stopped.
[She pulls her phone out, hovering over a contact list that has been dormant for years.]
[Ren standing in his kitchen, looking at the same city lights.]
Ren
(Thinking) She’s out there. Just a few train stops away.
Ami closes her eyes, tears leaking out as she puts the phone away without hitting dial
Ami
(Thinking) Some fires aren't meant to become ash. They just learn to burn in the dark.
Familiar Strangers
[Location: Ami's Apartment – Morning]
A notification sound breaks the silence.
She picks up her phone and unlocks it.
Notification: "Congratulations. We are pleased to confirm your employment. Your joining date will be next Monday."
Ami stares at the screen.
A smile slowly spreads across her face.
Ami
(Thinking): After all those interviews...
All those rejections...
I finally did it.
She lets out a soft laugh and hugs a pillow tightly.
Ami
Today calls for a celebration.
[Location: Downtown Shopping District – Afternoon]
The city is lively and crowded.
Ami walks through the streets carrying shopping bags.
Ami
Maybe things are finally moving forward.
She enters a stationery store.
Buys a notebook.
Buys pens.
Stops by a café.
A warm cup of coffee rests between her hands.
A genuine smile returns to her face.
[Location: Local Supermarket – Evening]
Ami pushes a shopping basket down an aisle.
Ami
I should buy groceries before heading home.
She reaches for a packet of pasta.
Then casually glances toward the next aisle.
Her body freezes.
Standing a few aisles away is Ren.
He's comparing two brands of coffee.
Completely unaware.
For a moment, the noise of the supermarket disappears.
Her grip tightens around the basket handle.
The excitement from earlier vanishes instantly.
Ami lowers her gaze.
She quietly turns around.
One step.
Then another.
Walking away before he notices her.
Ren places one of the coffee packs back on the shelf.
Something catches his attention.
He glances toward the end of the aisle.
Just in time to see a familiar figure disappear around the corner.
His eyes narrow slightly.
He recognizes her immediately.
Even from behind.
He watches the empty aisle.
For several seconds, he doesn't move.
Ren stands alone in the coffee aisle.
The bright store lights reflect in his eyes.
His gaze remains fixed on the corner where Ami disappeared.
Ren
And nothing has changed.
