Worse. I was in the middle of a panic-induced explanation in the conference room, and Adrian just walked in. He must have been looking for me. He heard the tail end of my stuttering, saw me looking like a deer in headlights, and just stood right in front of me with his frame.

Wait, Adrian was there? The 190 cm wall of muscle himself? I swear, sometimes I think that man was designed specifically to hover over you and intimidate anyone who even looks at you sideways.

It was intense. My supervisor—who is already a nightmare – started to point out the specific error I made. But Adrian didn't even let him finish. He cut him off so smoothly, saying that the if the reporting software was that confusing, maybe the company needed to invest in the better systems, not in "interrogating the staff."

He didn't even to look at me to see if I was wrong or right. He just decided he was on my side and that was that. I felt, so protected, but also… Chloe, it's suffocating. I want to stand on my own feet! I've spent so many years building these walls so I wouldn't have to rely on anyone, and now he's just bulldozing through them with kindness.

Likewise, he looked at me with those Hazel eyes of his eyes–so calm, so patient–and said, "Maya, I know you know how to do your job. You don't need to be perfect to earn my support. You just need to be you." He wasn't even mad. He just started rubbing the tension out of my shoulders, asking me if I wanted Thai or Italian. He makes it so hard to stay guarded.

Ugh, stop! My heart can't take it. See? He's trying to keep you weak; he's trying to keep you safe from the noise. He knows you're hard on yourself, so he's trying to be the soft place you land. You're 20, you're petite, and you've always felt like you had to be twice as loud or twice as smart just to be taken seriously. He's just giving you space to breathe for once.

Adrian had cooked, naturally–a simple, elegant meal that spoke of effort without being flashy.
When Maya finally sat across him, her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She kept her hands folded tightly in her lap, her blue eyes tracing the grain of the wooden table instead of meeting his gaze.

(he said, his voice barely murmur.)
He didn't push. He simply reached across the table, his hand covering her smaller hand, his thumb tracing a slow, rhythmic pattern against her knuckles. It was a gesture of complete, unhurried patience.

I decided then that I would never be that small. I would never let someone have that much power over my happiness.
She looked up, waiting for him to tell her she was being cynical or dramatic. But Adrian only listened, his expression solemn and completely focused on her. He didn't interrupt.
