Chapter 1.
Raelynn's POV: I stepped into the cold lobby on the highest floor of our office. The Executive Floor. a.k.a. my father's and Leopald's floor.
Raelynn(FL)
let's see what he's going to task me off with this time.....it's never for a good cause when he calls me to his office in the middle of the day.
Raelynn(FL)
It's me, Raelynn.
Arthur Desmond (Fl's dad)
Come in.
my father's gruff voice grated me the wrong way.
last time he called for me, I had to entertain a bunch of drunk, touchy, loud, middle-aged men.
I hope this time I can actually do something that's useful.
Raelynn(FL)
You called for me?
Arthur Desmond (Fl's dad)
Yes. Come, sit.
when I walk in I don't see anything out of place. Nothing amiss in his office. But the heaviness in the air tells me, I am not going to like what's coming.
Raelynn(FL)
So, What is it? if it's about the Brooklyn acquisition then worry not- I am almost through it.
I hate that word. Almost. It feels everything it is. Too close yet so far. Like my relationship with my father. I am the most favored out of his three children yet I can never get 'close' to him.
Arthur Desmond (Fl's dad)
As expected of you. But, no It's not about the Brooklyn acquisition. It's about something rather more important.
I felt the chills before the words were out of my father's mouth.
Arthur Desmond (Fl's dad)
It's about your marriage.
The words were too dry in my mouth. Dad hates when I stutter. So, while I am Glad I didn't stutter, my perfect facade was on the brink of breaking.
Raelynn(FL)
What do you mean?
Arthur Desmond (Fl's dad)
Exactly, what I am saying. It's sudden I know. But you knew It was going to happen sooner or later.
Raelynn(FL)
But Dad, I am only 24 and, And I just graduated. It's not even 6 months that I worked for the company.
Arthur Desmond (Fl's dad)
I am not saying to get married as in right now, honey. Get engaged and have a certificate- we can have the ceremony later into the future.
Raelynn(FL)
But that's still the same. It will be official.
I felt like I was talking to a wall. I have listened to my dad's every command, every order, every wish! But this! Marriage to a stranger, It's unacceptable!
Arthur Desmond (Fl's dad)
Come on, you are overreacting. Kids these either marry too young or too old.
Raelynn(FL)
BUT DAD I DON'T WANT TO MARRY A STRANGER!
Dad's smile slipped. Dad has never laid a hand on me, or abused me in any way. But, there is this thing-this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that tells me I should be terrified of him.
Arthur Desmond (Fl's dad)
You're overreacting Lynie Beanie.
The nickname did nothing to ease the discomfort. It only aided more.
Arthur Desmond (Fl's dad)
Plus, he's not a stranger per se. You have met him- It's Tomás, our ETA.
This time, I did stutter. If anything was worse than having to marry a stranger then it was to knowing I have to marry Tomás.
Arthur Desmond (Fl's dad)
Yes, wonderful? isn't it. More over, he is overjoyed to do so.
My dad tells me with so much joy. I am not smiling. no. All I want to do is scream, cry, beg my father to revoke this, undo what he had done.
I stand there before my father dumbfounded. Like a fool.
As if to add more misery to my already ruining life, in walks Tomás- my ruin, my would be fiance.
