The Line Between
chapter 1
Rain tapped against the classroom windows as students settled into their seats. The first day after summer break always felt chaotic, but Class 12-B was unusually restless.
jhope
"New teacher today," suga announced dramatically from the back row.
Yuri
"How do you know?" Yuri asked.
Laughter spread through the classroom.
jeon jungkook
*jungkook sat near the window, staring outside. He wasn't interested in rumors. School had never been exciting for him. It was simply something to endure.*
Then the classroom door opened.
A man stepped inside carrying a stack of books.
The room instantly quieted.
kim taehyung
"Good morning, everyone," he said with a calm smile. "I'm kim taehyung, and I'll be teaching literature this year."
jeon jungkook
*He looked up. For a moment, he couldn't explain why he kept staring.*
Maybe it was the confidence in the teacher's voice.
Maybe it was the way he spoke to the class like they were people rather than children.
Or maybe it was something else entirely.
Whatever it was, jungkook couldn't look away.
kim taehyung
*Mr. Kim taehyung wrote his name on the board.*
kim taehyung
"Literature isn't about memorizing answers," he said. "It's about understanding people."
The words lodged themselves in jungkook mind.
jeon jungkook
*Understanding people.*
jeon jungkook
*Nobody had ever tried to understand him.*
jeon jungkook
*Nobody except—*
jeon jungkook
*But maybe this teacher could.*
kim taehyung
"Let's start with introductions," Mr. kim continued.
One by one, students introduced themselves.
When it was jungkook's turn, he stood.
jeon jungkook
"My name is jeon jungkook."
kim taehyung
"Nice to meet you, jungkook."
jeon jungkook
*Yet jungkook felt his heart pound harder than it should have.*
kim taehyung
Nice to meet you.
The teacher had said it to everyone.
But somehow it felt different.
At least, that's what jungkook told himself.
The class ended forty minutes later.
Students packed their bags and rushed toward the door.
jeon jungkook
*jungkook stayed seated.*
Yuri
"Coming?" Yuri asked.
jeon jungkook
"In a minute."
Yuri
*She narrowed her eyes.*
"You're acting weird."
After she left, jungkook watched Mr. Kim organize papers at his desk.
The teacher seemed focused.
jeon jungkook
*jungkook didn't know why he was still sitting there.*
He just didn't want to leave.
Finally, Mr. Kim noticed him.
kim taehyung
"Need something?"
jeon jungkook
*jungkook immediately stood.*
kim taehyung
"Then you should get to your next class."
jeon jungkook
*But jungkook carried that smile with him for the rest of the day.*
jeon jungkook
*That evening, he found himself thinking about literature class again.*
jeon jungkook
*He remembered every detail.*
jeon jungkook
*By midnight, he had replayed the lesson in his mind dozens of times.*
Yuri
Yuri: You survived school.
jeon jungkook
jungkook: Barely.
Yuri
Yuri: You looked distracted after literature.
jeon jungkook
jungkook: The new teacher seems interesting.
Yuri
Yuri: Don't tell me you've become a teacher's pet already.
jeon jungkook
*jungkook stared at the screen.*
jeon jungkook
*He almost laughed.*❄
jeon jungkook
The next morning, jungkook arrived at school thirty minutes early.
Literature wasn't until the fourth period.
jeon jungkook
Yet somehow he found himself walking past Mr. Kim's classroom.
Just to see if he was there.
jeon jungkook
When he finally spotted the teacher arranging books inside, a strange sense of relief settled over him.
Like he had been searching for something important.
Something that belonged to him.
jeon jungkook
*The thought appeared suddenly.*
And just as quickly, it frightened him.
jeon jungkook
*Belonged to him?*
jeon jungkook
*But he pushed the feeling away.*
It wasn't possessiveness.
jeon jungkook
*At least, that's what he believed.*
jeon jungkook
*Standing in the empty hallway, jungkook smiled to himself.*
Completely unaware that this was only the beginning.
And that some feelings, when left unchecked, could become dangerous.

jeon jungkook had never been told "no."
Not because he was spoiled in the ordinary sense.
People simply rarely refused him.
His father was the most influential businessman in the country. His companies appeared on television almost every day. Ministers knew his name. CEOs sought his approval.
Money was never a problem.
Their mansion was larger than some hotels.
Luxury cars lined the driveway.
Private security guarded the property.
And yet, despite all that wealth, jungkook's parents adored him more than anything.
If jungkook wanted something, he received it.
If jungkook disliked something, it disappeared.
His mother called him her prince.
His father called him his successor.
No one ever taught him how to lose.
No one ever taught him that some things could never belong to him.
Mr. Kim taehyung life couldn't have been more different.
He lived in a modest house with his parents.
His father owned a neighborhood restaurant—not famous, not wealthy, but respected.
Enough to support the family.
Enough to live comfortably.
His mother spent most of her time caring for the home.
His older brother worked overseas and visited only occasionally.
The Kim's were ordinary people.
taehyung often helped at the restaurant on weekends.
Many students would have been shocked if they saw their literature teacher serving tea and taking orders from customers.
But taehyung never felt embarrassed about it.
He was proud of where he came from.

chapter 3
The contrast fascinated jungkook.
jeon jungkook
*The more he learned about his teacher, the more obsessed he became.*
They belonged to completely different worlds.
Yet somehow taehyung seemed happier.
jeon jungkook
*That fact irritated him.*
Yuri
"You're staring again."
Yuri
*Yuri's voice interrupted his thoughts.*
jeon jungkook
*he looked away from the teacher's desk.*
Yuri
"You've spent ten minutes watching him organize papers."
Yuri
"You absolutely were."
Yuri
*Yuri narrowed her eyes.*
Yuri
"Seriously, what's your deal lately?"
Yuri
*She didn't believe him.*
Meanwhile, another disaster was unfolding.
jhope
*jhope had somehow convinced himself that Yuri secretly liked him.*
jhope
"Watch this," he whispered.
jeon jungkook
*jungkook barely paid attention.*
jhope walked directly toward Yuri.
jhope
"It came from my heart."
Several nearby students burst into laughter.
kim taehyung
*Even Mr. Kim smiled from the front of the room.*
jeon jungkook
*The sight immediately drew jungkook's attention.*
jeon jungkook
*He didn't like seeing taehyung focused on others.*
Logically, he knew it was ridiculous.
Teachers interacted with students.
But logic isn't winning anymore.
Later that afternoon, literature class ended.
Students flooded into the hallway.
jeon jungkook
*jungkook intentionally moved slower than everyone else.*
As expected, he became the last student remaining.
kim taehyung
*taehyung looked up from his desk.*
kim taehyung
"Still here?"
jeon jungkook
"Just finishing notes."
kim taehyung
"Make sure you're not late for your next class."
jeon jungkook
*Yet jungkook spent the entire day replaying those words.*
kim taehyung
*That evening, taehyung stopped by his father's restaurant.*
The dinner rush had already begun.
Customers filled most of the tables.
His father stood behind the counter.
Mr. Kim (taehyuny's father)
"You're late."
kim taehyung
"I had papers to grade."
Mr. Kim (taehyuny's father)
*His father laughed.*
Mr. Kim (taehyuny's father)
"You always have papers to grade."
kim taehyung
*taehyung smiled.*
kim taehyung
"Occupational hazard."
jeon jungkook
*Across the city, jungkook sat alone in his room.*
jeon jungkook
The room itself was larger than taehyung's house living room.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline.
jeon jungkook
*But jungkook barely noticed.*
His attention remained fixed on his phone.
Specifically, on a photo from the school's annual newsletter.
jeon jungkook
*jungkook zoomed in.*
jeon jungkook
*His gaze lingered.*
Far longer than it should have.
A knock sounded at the door.
His mother entered carrying tea.
Mrs. jeon (jungkook's mother)
"kook?"
jeon jungkook
*He immediately locked his phone.*
Mrs. jeon (jungkook's mother)
"You've been quiet lately."
Mrs. jeon (jungkook's mother)
*She smiled softly.*
Mrs. jeon (jungkook's mother)
"Your father and I are taking a trip next month. We thought you'd like a new car before university applications start."
Most teenagers would have been thrilled.
jeon jungkook
*jungkook barely reacted.*
jeon jungkook
"Whatever you think is best."
Mrs. jeon (jungkook's mother)
*His mother looked surprised.*
Because normally jungkook always had an opinion.
Recently, however, his attention seemed elsewhere.
jeon jungkook
*That night, jungkook lay awake staring at the ceiling.*
His thoughts returned to taehyung.
The way he treated everyone equally.
That last part bothered him most.
jeon jungkook
*And for perhaps the first time in his life, jungkook wanted something he couldn't simply ask his parents to buy.*
Something money couldn't guarantee.
Something that existed entirely outside his control.
The realization should have scared him.
jeon jungkook
*Instead, it made his obsession grow stronger.*
And somewhere far away, completely unaware of the storm forming around him, Kim taehyung peacefully graded essays at his kitchen table.
