2:17 AM

Chapter 1: The Door Was Open

Vihaan didn’t believe in ghosts.

Not because he was brave—but because he had never seen anything worth believing in.

That changed on the third night.

He woke up suddenly, his heart pounding for no reason he could explain. The room was completely dark, except for the faint light coming from his phone screen.

2:17 AM.

He stared at it for a few seconds, his thoughts slow and unclear, then let out a quiet sigh and turned to the other side.

That’s when he noticed it.

The door.

It was open.

Vihaan frowned. He was sure he had locked it before going to sleep.

Slowly, he pushed himself up, his eyes fixed on the narrow gap. The hallway outside was darker than his room—almost like the light refused to enter it.

“Main bhool gaya tha… shayad,” he muttered under his breath.

But something felt… wrong.

The air in the room had changed. It felt heavier. Colder.

Vihaan reached for his phone and turned on the flashlight. The beam cut through the darkness, landing on the door.

It creaked.

Not because he touched it.

Because it moved.

Just slightly.

Vihaan froze.

For a moment, he tried to reason with himself. Old buildings made noises. Doors shifted.

That’s normal.

That’s explainable.

Still, he stood up.

Each step toward the door felt slower than the last. The wooden floor made a soft sound under his feet—louder than it should have been in the silence.

Step.

Step.

Step.

He reached the door and held it.

The wood was cold.

Too cold.

Taking a slow breath, Vihaan pulled it open.

The hallway was empty.

A long, narrow stretch of darkness, with a flickering tube light at the far end. It buzzed faintly, like it was struggling to stay alive.

Vihaan stepped out.

The air outside was even colder.

He looked around carefully. No movement. No sound.

Just silence.

Then—

A noise.

Behind him.

Vihaan turned instantly.

His room.

The faint light from his phone still glowed on the bed.

But that wasn’t what made his chest tighten.

The cupboard door was open.

He was sure it had been closed.

Slowly… very slowly… Vihaan stepped back into the room.

“Maine ise band kiya tha…” he whispered.

He walked toward the cupboard, trying to ignore the strange feeling crawling up his spine.

Halfway there—

His phone screen flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then it went black.

The room was swallowed by darkness.

Vihaan stopped moving.

His breath grew louder.

In the silence—

He heard it.

A soft sound.

From inside the cupboard.

Not loud.

Not clear.

But enough.

It sounded like…

Breathing.

Vihaan’s fingers tightened into fists.

He wanted to turn on the light.

He wanted to leave the room.

But instead—

He took another step forward.

And reached for the cupboard door.

The sound stopped.

Complete silence.

Vihaan stood there for a few seconds, his hand hovering in the air.

Then—

Something inside the cupboard shifted.

A faint scraping sound.

Vihaan didn’t pull the door open.

He couldn’t.

Because slowly… very slowly…

From the darkness inside—

Something moved.

And it wasn’t trying to come out.

It was waiting.

For him.

To open it.

Chapter 2 — Someone Is Awake

Vihaan didn’t open the cupboard.

Not that night.

He stood there for what felt like minutes, his hand frozen in the air, his body refusing to move. The silence inside the cupboard was worse than the sound.

Because now he knew something was there.

And it knew he was standing right outside.

Slowly, he stepped back.

Then another step.

And without taking his eyes off the cupboard, he reached behind him and grabbed his phone from the bed.

The screen flickered back to life.

2:17 AM.

Still.

It hadn’t changed.

Vihaan swallowed hard.

“Yeh… normal nahi hai,” he whispered.

The room felt tighter. Smaller. Like the walls were closing in.

He didn’t sleep after that.

He sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the cupboard until the first light of morning slipped through the window.

And just like that—

Everything was normal again.

The cupboard was closed.

The door was locked.

The air felt… empty.

As if nothing had happened.

The next day felt unreal.

Vihaan moved through it like a blur, replaying the night over and over in his head.

Maybe it was stress.

Maybe he imagined it.

Maybe—

“Tum naye ho yahan?”

The voice came from behind him.

Vihaan turned.

A girl stood a few steps away, watching him.

She looked calm. Too calm.

“Haan,” he replied, a little unsure. “Kal hi shift hua hoon.”

She nodded slowly, as if confirming something.

“Room number 3?” she asked.

Vihaan frowned. “Haan… kaise pata?”

The girl didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she looked past him, toward the building.

Then back at him.

“Raat ko awaaz aati hai?” she asked quietly.

Vihaan felt his chest tighten.

“Tum kya kehna chahti ho?” he said.

For a moment, she just stared at him.

Then—

“Darwaza khul jaata hai na… khud se,” she said.

Silence.

Vihaan’s fingers curled slightly.

“Tum… kaun ho?” he asked.

“Naina,” she replied.

The name felt familiar.

For some reason, he didn’t like that.

Before he could say anything else, she stepped back.

“2:17,” she said softly. “Sone mat rehna.”

And then she walked away.

That night—

Vihaan didn’t sleep.

He sat on his bed, phone in his hand, eyes fixed on the clock.

2:16 AM.

His breathing slowed.

The room was silent.

Too silent.

2:17 AM.

The screen flickered.

The temperature dropped.

And this time—

Vihaan didn’t look at the door.

He looked at the cupboard.

Waiting.

Watching.

The handle moved.

Slowly.

A soft creak filled the room as the cupboard door began to open on its own.

Vihaan didn’t move.

He didn’t blink.

“Main dekh raha hoon…” he whispered.

The door opened wider.

Darkness spilled out from inside.

Thicker than the rest of the room.

And then—

Something inside shifted.

Not forward.

Not backward.

Just enough.

Like it knew he was watching.

Vihaan’s voice came out weaker this time.

“Tum… kya chahte ho?”

For a second—

Nothing happened.

Then—

From inside the cupboard—

A whisper.

So faint, he almost missed it.

“Mat… kholo…”

Vihaan froze.

His heart skipped.

Because the voice—

It wasn’t threatening.

It was warning him.

And before he could react—

The cupboard slammed shut.

The lights came back.

The air returned to normal.

And the clock changed.

2:18 AM.

Vihaan didn’t move.

Because now—

He understood one thing.

Whatever was inside—

Was not the only thing in that room.

Chapter 3 — What Happened Here

Vihaan didn’t sleep.

Not after what he heard.

“Mat kholo.”

The words stayed in his head long after the room returned to normal.

Morning came, but it didn’t feel like relief.

It felt like a pause.

By afternoon, Vihaan couldn’t take it anymore.

He stepped out of the building, the sunlight almost blinding after the heavy darkness of the night.

Everything looked normal.

People walking. Voices. Distant traffic.

Too normal.

As if nothing existed beyond what could be seen.

“Tum theek nahi lag rahe.”

Vihaan turned.

A man stood near the gate, leaning casually against the wall.

He looked older. Calm. Observant.

Too observant.

“Main theek hoon,” Vihaan replied.

The man smiled slightly.

“Room number 3, right?”

Vihaan’s expression hardened. “Haan… kaise pata?”

“Yahan sab pata chal jaata hai,” the man said. “Naam Kashyap.”

Vihaan didn’t respond immediately.

Something about him felt… off.

Not dangerous.

But not safe either.

“Raat ko jagte rehna,” Kashyap added. “Sone ki aadat chhod do.”

Vihaan let out a quiet breath. “Sab log yahi bol rahe hain. Problem kya hai us room mein?”

Kashyap looked at him for a few seconds.

Then he laughed softly.

“Problem?” he repeated. “Tumhe lagta hai problem room mein hai?”

Silence.

Vihaan felt a chill run down his spine.

“Seedha boliye,” he said. “Kya ho raha hai wahan?”

Kashyap stepped closer.

Not too close.

Just enough.

“Jo bhi hai,” he said quietly, “woh bahar nahi aata.”

Vihaan’s chest tightened.

“Phir?” he asked.

Kashyap’s eyes didn’t leave his.

“Log khud usse milne jaate hain.”

That evening—

Vihaan kept thinking about it.

About Naina.

About Kashyap.

About the voice.

“Mat kholo.”

It didn’t sound like a warning meant to scare him.

It sounded like someone trying to protect him.

But from what?

Or from whom?

Night came faster than he expected.

The room felt different now.

Not unfamiliar.

Just… aware.

Vihaan sat on his bed, staring at the cupboard.

Waiting.

2:16 AM.

His fingers tightened around his phone.

His breathing slowed.

2:17 AM.

The light flickered.

The temperature dropped.

But this time—

Something else happened.

The door didn’t open.

The cupboard didn’t move.

Nothing changed.

Vihaan frowned.

“Yeh…” he whispered. “Aaj kyun nahi?”

Silence.

Heavy.

Unnatural.

And then—

A sound.

Not from the cupboard.

Not from the door.

From behind him.

Vihaan turned slowly.

The mirror.

For a second, everything looked normal.

Then—

His reflection moved.

Before he did.

Vihaan froze.

His reflection was still looking at the cupboard.

But he wasn’t.

“Yeh kya—”

The reflection slowly turned its head.

And looked directly at him.

Vihaan stumbled back.

“Yeh possible nahi hai…”

The reflection smiled.

A slow… unnatural smile.

And then—

It raised its hand.

And pointed.

Not at him.

At the cupboard.

Vihaan’s heart started racing again.

“Tum… kya ho?” he whispered.

The reflection’s lips moved.

But no sound came out.

Instead—

The cupboard handle shook violently.

This time—

Not slow.

Not quiet.

As if something inside was trying to force its way out.

“Mat kholo!”

The whisper came again.

Louder.

Desperate.

Not from the cupboard.

From everywhere.

The lights went out.

The mirror cracked.

And in the darkness—

Something laughed.

Not from inside the cupboard.

Not from outside.

But from somewhere much closer.

When the lights came back—

Everything was normal.

Again.

The cupboard was closed.

The mirror was intact.

The room was silent.

Vihaan stood there, shaking.

Because now he knew—

There was more than one thing in that room.

And not all of them…

Wanted him safe.
