Chapter 2 – The Collision

🌧️ Same night— a rain-soaked main road
Avani steps out of the pharmacy, medicine bag clutched to her chest, mind racing only about her aunt's fever. The signal ahead glows red, but in her hurry, she barely notices — she steps straight onto the crossing.
A sleek black car turns the corner fast. Headlights cut through the rain.

driver
"Brake! BRAKE—"
Tires screech. The car stops just short of her — but Avani, startled, loses her footing and falls hard onto the wet road, the medicine bag slipping from her hands.
😠 She pushes herself up, drenched, palms scraped, fury replacing shock almost instantly. The driver, Ramesh, steps out first, visibly rattled.
driver
driver
"Madam, signal red undi. Kallu ekkada unnayi?" (Madam, the signal was red. Where were your eyes?)
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
(getting up, sharp) "I was in a hurry; I didn't see it. But didn't you see a person crossing the road?"
driver
driver
"You fell in the middle of the road, and now you're blaming me?"
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"If you'd been driving at a lower speed in this rain, none of this would've happened."
The rear door opens. Shri Kanth steps out, unbothered by the downpour, eyes narrowing at the commotion.
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
"Ramesh, chaalu." (Ramesh, enough.)
He glances at Avani — quick, assessing, faintly irritated at the delay — and reaches for his wallet.
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
Shri Kanth: "Take this. Go get yourself checked at a hospital."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
(still shaken, wiping rain off her face) "What is this for?"
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
"For the inconvenience."
Avani looks at the cash, then at his face — composed, cool, faintly bored, like he just wants this finished and forgotten.
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
(bitter laugh) "Is money the answer to every problem for you?"
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
(flat, controlled) "Don't waste my time."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"And who wasted mine first?"
She takes the money from his hand. Looks at it. Then presses it back hard against his chest.
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"Fix your attitude with this money. That's what actually needs repairing."
The small crowd gathered under umbrellas goes quiet. Shri Kanth's jaw tightens — a flicker of real humiliation before he forces it back under control. He isn't a man used to being spoken to this way, especially not in public.
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
(low, dangerously calm) "You have some nerve."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"I'm a person who met with an accident. Not an item you can put a price on."
She turns, picks up her fallen medicine bag, and walks off into the rain without a glance back.
Shri Kanth stands there, rain dripping down his jaw, the rejected cash still in his hand. He barely reacts outwardly — too disciplined for that — but the humiliation sits sharp under the surface, worse for having witnesses.
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
Shri kanth Reddy/ml
(quiet, controlled) "Ramesh. Car ekku." (Ramesh. Get in the car.)
Ramesh gets in without a word, still shaken. Shri Kanth's eyes linger a moment longer on the direction she disappeared into before he finally looks away, something cold settling behind his composed expression.

Back home, Avani rushes in, soaked through, and kneels beside her aunt.
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"Atta, take this tablets"
savitri devi / fl aunty
savitri devi / fl aunty
(weakly, smiling) "You didn't need to run in this rain, avani.
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"For you, I'd run through worse than rain, Atta."
Vaishnavi, who's been hovering by the door listening, can't resist.
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
"Akka, you went out for medicine and came back looking like you fought a whole crowd. What happened?"
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
(waving her off, exhausted) "Nothing. Some rich man's car nearly hit me, that's all."
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
(gasping dramatically) "And knowing you, you definitely didn't stay quiet about it."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
(small, tired smile) "Obviously not."
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
"One day, akka, your temper is going to pick a fight with the wrong person."
Avani rolls her eyes, too drained to argue, and turns back to her aunt — never once imagining how right her sister's words are about to turn out to be.

Chapter 3 – Aftermath

☀️ Next morning — the small flat, sunlight after the storm
Savitri Devi's fever has broken overnight. She sits up in bed, looking far more like herself, while Avani hovers with a tray of tea and toast.
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"Drink this slowly, Atta. Don't rush it."
savitri devi / fl aunty
savitri devi / fl aunty
"I'm not made of glass, Avani. I can hold my own cup."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
(mock stern) "Yesterday you were burning up and hiding it from me. Excuse me if I don't trust you to hold your own cup today."
Vaishnavi wanders in, hair a mess, still half asleep, and makes a beeline straight for the second cup on the tray.
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
"Ooh, chai."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"That's Atta's second cup, not yours."
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
(already sipping it) "Atta doesn't even want two cups. Right, Atta?"
savitri devi / fl aunty
savitri devi / fl aunty
(hiding a smile) "Don't put me in the middle of this."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"Vaishnavi! I made that specifically for atta—"
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
"And I'm specifically drinking it. Circle of life, akka."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
(snatching for the cup, missing) "You have your own tea in the kitchen!"
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
(dodging, laughing) "Mine's cold. This one's fresh. Basic economics — I'm just optimizing."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"You're impossible. I nearly get run over by a car for medicine and this is the thanks I get — my own sister stealing chai out of my hands."
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
(gasping, hand on chest) "Run over?! Akka, you make it sound like a Bollywood climax. It was a car that stopped in time. You walked home and lectured a stranger. Very different energy."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"I could've been seriously hurt!"
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
"You could've. But you weren't, because you were too busy insulting a rich man's attitude to actually fall properly."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
(pointing the toast at her) "One day, Vaishnavi, your mouth is going to get you in real trouble."
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
"And one day, akka, your temper is going to marry someone just to prove a point."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
"That is the most ridiculous thing you've ever said."
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
(shrugging, stealing the last biscuit off the tray while Avani's distracted) "Mark my words."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
(spotting the empty plate) "You took the last biscuit AND the chai? Vaishnavi!"
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
Vaishnavi malik/ fl sister
(already halfway out the door, grinning) "Optimizing, akka! I told you!"
Avani throws a pillow after her, missing by a mile, and Savitri Devi laughs from the bed
savitri devi / fl aunty
savitri devi / fl aunty
"You two never change."
Avani malik/fl
Avani malik/fl
(muttering, picking the pillow back up) "She never changes. I'm the reasonable one."
savitri devi / fl aunty
savitri devi / fl aunty
(amused) "Of course, avani. Of course."
