Closer Than His Wife
CHAPTER 1
The house was quiet in the particular way that meant everyone in it had agreed not to look too closely at anyone else.
Kristoffer stood at the edge of the bedroom, listening. Down the hall, water ran and then stopped. A drawer slid shut. The ordinary sounds of a woman settling into a night she expected to be like every other night for the rest of her life. He had learned the rhythm of her quickly….a month for a marriage was enough to learn a rhythm, if not a person and he counted on it now the way a man counts on the dark. His wife downstairs notices him.
Lenora
Honey you’re not asleep? It’s so late
Kristoffer
Well…. I have an urgent work
Kristoffer
I have to leave
Kristoffer
Don’t waste my time
Lenora
I could come with you. Keep you company. Bring you coffee.
Kristoffer
No, you’d just be sitting there bored while I stare at a screen. Stay home. Sleep.
Lenora
Okay.
Will you be late?
Kristoffer
Probably. Don’t wait up.
Kristoffer
You don’t have to.
Lenora
I know. I want to.
Be safe. I love you.
CHAPTER 2
The gates of the estate closed behind him with a low mechanical groan, and only then did Kristoffer let out the breath he’d been holding since the front door.
The mansion shrank in his mirror — all that pale stone and tall dark windows, the house his family had given him along with the wife. One window upstairs was still lit. Lenora, waiting up. He looked away from it and pressed his foot down.
He waited until the estate was well behind him before he called. Hands-free, her name glowing on the dashboard. She picked up before the first ring had finished
Kristoffer
*in call* you…awake….?
Jennifer
I’m always awake on the nights you go quiet. Learned that the hard way.
Kristoffer
I’m sorry.
It’s been a long month.
Jennifer
A month. Has it really only been that?
Feels like a year since you stood there and let them put that ring on you.
Kristoffer
Well…I am on my way…. expect my arrival
Kristoffer
Yeah…I told her it was work. A deal issue….That I had to go in….
Jennifer
And she believed you?
Kristoffer
Well yeah… makes it quiet easier no?
Jennifer
You can lie to her. You don’t get to lie to me….
Kristoffer
I’ve never lied to you. Not once.
Jennifer
You’re married now. You can’t just drive across town at midnight like nothing changed….
Kristoffer
Nothing did change. That’s the point…
Kristoffer
I’m coming over. 26 minutes.
CHAPTER 3
The car glided through quiet suburban streets, then onto a narrow coastal road lined with pine trees and occasional villas hidden behind high hedges.
Half an hour later,
he pulled up to a modern glass-and-wood house
perched on cliffs overlooking the fjord.
No security cameras.
No staff.
Just peace and discretion.
The glass-and-wood house belonged to Jennifer Wells.
Fashion icon. Socialite. Vogue cover girl twice in a single year. A woman whose name sparked headlines, not just for her designs but for the mystery around her private life especially lately, when she’d stopped appearing publicly with anyone.
But Kristoffer knew.
They’d been seeing each other quietly for years now…..
through encrypted messages and discreet meetings that never made headlines because neither of them wanted attention on this….
He hadn't told his wife about Jennifer….
Not legally required to disclose lovers (their marriage was transactional; he could do whatever he pleased)
And today?
Today was rare:
A real meeting with the woman he loves
Kristoffer
*he gets out from his car and notices Jennifer already at the threshold*
Jennifer
Oh I missed you~
Kristoffer
Jennifer didn’t say it dramatically. Not with tears or trembling. But there was weight in it: a month of stolen moments, encrypted calls at 2 AM when neither could sleep, weeks where they hadn't seen each other because Kristoffer had been in Dubai closing a deal.
And now here he was.
Real.
Solid.
Holding her like she mattered.
Kristoffer exhaled slowly this time not through the nose (his usual controlled breath), but a quiet release from his lungs. A sign that something inside him had shifted
Then, finally, he kissed her.
Kristoffer
The kiss deepened suddenly, intensely.
No more softness. No gentle reunion.
Now it was passion hungry, all-consuming. Kristoffer’s hands slid into her hair fingers tangling in the dark silk of Jennifer's waves and he tilted his head to angle her just right as their mouths crashed together with a French kiss that burned through months of restraint.
Tongues met.
Slow at first…
then bolder,
deeper,
more insistent.
