Let's see how long that smile lasts

The city glittered beneath the night sky, unaware that a war born twenty years ago was about to begin again. Rudra Singh stood beside the floor-to-ceiling window of his office, his gaze fixed on the photographs spread across the table behind him. One photograph. That was all it took. A smiling girl with bright eyes and a carefree laugh. Ruhi Rathore. Advik Rathore's daughter. The daughter of the man who had destroyed his life. Rudra's jaw tightened as memories he had spent years trying to bury resurfaced. A six-year-old boy waiting for his father. A gunshot. Screams. Blood. And a name that haunted every nightmare. Advik Rathore. For years, Rudra had dreamed of revenge. For years, he had imagined making Advik suffer the way his family had suffered. But hurting Advik directly was too easy. No. Rudra wanted something worse. He wanted Advik to watch helplessly as the most precious person in his life slipped away. His daughter. He picked up Ruhi's photograph.

"You're innocent," he murmured, staring at her smiling face. A bitter smile crossed his lips. "But unfortunately for you, you're his daughter."
His phone vibrated.

"Everything is ready, sir," his assistant said.

Rudra looked once more at the photograph. "Which college?"

"St. Xavier's."

"And her schedule?"

"We've got everything."

Rudra nodded. "Good."
The call ended. Outside, thunder rumbled across the dark sky. Rudra placed the photograph in his pocket and walked toward the door. Twenty years ago, Advik Rathore had started this story. Now Rudra Singh was going to finish it. And it would begin with Ruhi.
Rudra ended the call and slipped Ruhi's photograph into his wallet. For a moment, he simply stared at it. She looked happy. Carefree. Untouched by the darkness her father had created. A darkness that had consumed countless lives. Including his. His fingers tightened around the photograph

"Let's see how long that smile lasts."
The next morning, St. Xavier's College buzzed with students rushing from one lecture to another. Ruhi Rathore rushed through the college gates with a coffee in one hand and her bag hanging from one shoulder.

"Aah!" She collided with someone and her coffee spilled all over the front of his white shirt. Ruhi's eyes widened. "Oh my God! I'm so sorry!"
The man looked down at his ruined shirt before lifting his gaze to her. For a second, Ruhi forgot how to breathe. Tall. Sharp features. Dark eyes. And an expression so calm that it somehow made him even more intimidating.
??
??
"It's okay," he said.
Ruhi Rathore (FL)

"No! It's not okay." Ruhi quickly pulled out tissues from her bag.

Ruhi quickly pulled out tissues from her bag. "Your shirt is completely ruined."
??
??
The man accepted the tissues. "It was an old shirt anyway."
Ruhi frowned. That was obviously a lie. The shirt looked expensive. Very expensive.

"It's Ok"

A few seconds of awkward silence followed. Then his lips curved slightly. "You should probably get to class."

Ruhi looked at her watch. Her eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. "Oh no!" She was already late. Without another word, she ran toward the building.
Neither of them noticed the small smile on the man's face. Or perhaps only one of them didn't notice. Because Rudra Rathore had planned this meeting for weeks. He watched Ruhi disappear inside the building. Then he looked at the coffee stain on his shirt. A stain he had deliberately allowed to happen. Every detail. Every second. Every step. Planned.

Meera rolled her eyes. "Because I'm a good person."
Ruhi laughed. At twenty-one, life felt simple. College. Friends. Assignments. And Parents who loved her more than anything. What else did she need?

Her phone vibrated. Dad Calling. A smile instantly appeared on her face. "Baba."

"Promise"
The call ended. Ruhi smiled to herself. No matter how busy Advik became, he always found time for her. Always.
Few feet away. Rudra sat inside a black luxury car parked opposite the college. His gaze remained fixed on the campus gate. Then he saw her. Ruhi. Laughing. Smiling. Completely unaware. The assistant glanced at him through the rear-view mirror.

"Sir"
Rudra Singh (ML)

Rudra's expression remained unreadable. "Drive."
The car moved forward. Slowly. Following her route. Not close enough to be noticed. Just enough to observe. Everything.
Meanwhile, inside the classroom, Ruhi couldn't stop thinking about the stranger. Not because he was handsome. Okay. Maybe because he was handsome. But mostly because he had been surprisingly nice. Most people would have been furious. Instead, he had smiled. A genuine smile. The kind that reached his eyes. Ruhi shook her head. Why was she even thinking about him? She didn't even know his name.
Meanwhile
Rudra observe everything. The way she greeted people. The places she visited. The coffee shop she stopped at every afternoon. The bookstore she entered every Friday. Rudra memorized every detail. Because revenge required patience. And Rudra Singh was a patient man.
Three weeks later
Ruhi sat alone at her favorite bookstore near the college. The place was quiet. Peaceful. One of the few places where nobody knew she was Advik Rathore's daughter. No security guards. No family name. Just Ruhi. She walked between the shelves searching for a novel. As she reached for a book, another hand reached for it at the same time. Ruhi froze. The stranger from the morning stood beside her. The same calm eyes. The same composed expression. The same annoying ability to appear out of nowhere.

Rudra looked at the book in her hand. "Pretty high."
She laughed. For the first time. And something unexpectedly tightened inside Rudra's chest. For a moment, he forgot why he was there. Forgot the plan. Forgot Advik. Forgot revenge. Then his gaze landed on the silver bracelet around her wrist. A bracelet he recognized from old photographs. A gift from Advik Rathore. The hatred returned instantly. No. He couldn't afford to forget. Not even for a second. Because this girl wasn't just Ruhi. She was Advik Rathore's daughter.
