The Language of Silence

Chapter 1

The Day Everything Changed

... The vibration of Damien's phone rattled against the wooden nightstand....

... His eyes opened slowly....

... Darkness greeted him....

...The same cracked ceiling....

...The same cold room....

...The same silence....

...Damien stared upward for several seconds before reaching for his phone....

...5:30 AM....

...Another day....

...He dragged himself out of bed and stretched his aching shoulders....

...The apartment was small enough that he could cross it in a few steps. A narrow bed stood against one wall. A worn-out couch occupied the corner. The tiny kitchen barely had enough room for a refrigerator....

...It wasn't much....

...But it was all he could afford....

...Damien walked into the bathroom and looked at his reflection....

...Dark circles lingered beneath his eyes....

..."You look terrible," he muttered to himself....

...He couldn't hear his own voice....

...He never could....

...A bitter smile crossed his lips....

..."At least you're consistent."...

...After washing his face, he grabbed a piece of bread from the kitchen and headed for work....

...The city was already alive....

...People rushed along the sidewalks....

...Cars moved through the streets....

...Children walked toward school....

...Damien watched their mouths move as they talked and laughed....

...He often wondered what those sounds were like....

...What did laughter really sound like?...

...What did someone's voice sound like when they said your name?...

...The questions used to haunt him....

...Now he simply lived with them....

...The convenience store came into view....

...A familiar sense of exhaustion settled over him....

...Work....

...The place where every day felt exactly the same....

...As soon as he entered, his manager looked up from behind the register....

...The older man frowned....

...His lips moved....

...Damien read them easily....

..."Three minutes late."...

...Damien sighed....

...He quickly signed an apology....

...The manager rolled his eyes....

..."Just get to work."...

...Damien nodded....

...Nothing new there....

...A few customers entered during the morning....

...An elderly woman smiled warmly at him....

...A businessman impatiently tapped the counter while Damien wrote down answers to his questions....

...Another customer became visibly annoyed after learning Damien was deaf....

...By noon, Damien was exhausted....

...He leaned against the counter while organizing receipts....

...Then he felt it again....

...That strange feeling....

...A restless sensation in his chest....

...As though something important was about to happen....

...He frowned....

...What was wrong with him today?...

...The automatic doors opened....

...Damien glanced up....

...A young woman stepped inside....

...His hand froze....

...For a moment, he forgot what he was doing....

...The girl wore a simple cream-colored sweater....

...Dark hair fell over her shoulders....

...But it wasn't her appearance that caught his attention....

...It was her eyes....

...Bright....

...Curious....

...Alive....

...She walked through the aisles while examining products....

...Damien quickly looked away....

...A second later, he looked back....

...Then immediately cursed himself....

...Why was he staring?...

...The girl stopped in front of a shelf....

...She picked up two different chocolate bars and stared at them....

...Then she looked around....

...Her eyes landed on Damien....

...And started walking toward him....

...Damien's stomach dropped....

..."Oh no."...

...A few moments later, she stood in front of the counter....

...She held up the chocolate bars....

...Her lips moved....

...Damien immediately knew the problem....

...She didn't know....

...Most people didn't....

...Not at first....

...His heart sank....

...The girl's smile slowly faded....

..."Oh."...

...Understanding appeared on her face....

...Damien reached beneath the counter and grabbed a small notebook....

...He quickly wrote a message....

...Sorry. I'm deaf....

...The girl blinked....

...Then she smiled....

...Not awkwardly....

...Not sympathetically....

...Just... normally....

...She picked up the pen....

...That's okay....

...Damien stared at the words....

...For some reason, his chest tightened....

...The girl wrote again....

...Which chocolate is better?...

...Damien looked at the two bars....

...A laugh escaped him....

...He pointed toward the darker one....

...The girl's eyes lit up....

...Good choice?...

...Damien nodded....

...Trust me....

...She laughed....

...At least, he assumed she laughed....

...Her shoulders shook slightly....

...The sight made him smile....

...The girl held out the notebook once more....

...I'm Lyra....

...Damien looked at her name....

...Lyra....

...Beautiful....

...Just like her....

...He swallowed and wrote his own....

...Damien....

...Lyra read it and grinned....

...Nice to meet you, Damien....

...For some reason, seeing his name written by her felt different....

...Special....

...Like it mattered....

...Neither of them knew it then....

...But this simple conversation would change both of their lives forever....

When Silence Felt Different

...Damien stared at the words for several seconds....

...Nice to meet you, Damien....

...His chest tightened unexpectedly....

...It had been a long time since someone had written his name with such warmth....

...He picked up the pen....

...Nice to meet you too....

...Lyra's smile widened....

...For a moment, neither of them wrote anything....

...Yet the silence didn't feel awkward....

...Damien was used to silence....

...Most people became uncomfortable when conversations stopped....

...Lyra didn't....

...She simply stood there, studying him curiously....

...Then she wrote again....

...Do you always work here?...

...Damien nodded before answering....

...Six days a week....

...Lyra's eyes widened....

...Seriously?...

...He nodded....

...That sounds exhausting....

...It is....

...She covered her mouth dramatically and shook her head....

...Damien couldn't help smiling....

...She was strangely expressive....

...Everything she felt appeared on her face....

...It made her easy to understand....

...Lyra quickly wrote another question....

...Do you ever take a break?...

...Sometimes....

...That's not enough....

...Damien raised an eyebrow....

...She pointed accusingly at the notebook and wrote:...

...You need a hobby....

...He laughed silently....

...The movement caught Lyra's attention....

...Her eyes brightened....

...There it is....

...Damien tilted his head....

...She grabbed the pen again....

...Your smile....

...You should do that more often....

...The words caught him off guard....

...He quickly looked away....

...Heat crept into his face....

...Lyra seemed pleased with his reaction....

...A customer suddenly approached the counter....

...Damien excused himself with a small gesture and walked over....

...The customer asked a question....

...Damien focused carefully on the man's lips....

...After years of practice, he could understand most people if they faced him directly....

...Most....

...Not all....

...The customer paid and left....

...When Damien turned around again, he expected Lyra to be gone....

...She wasn't....

...She was still waiting....

...Something about that made his heart beat faster....

...Most people got impatient....

...Most people left....

...Lyra stayed....

...She smiled when he returned....

...Then she wrote:...

...Now where were we?...

...Damien found himself smiling again....

...You were telling me I need a hobby....

...Correct....

...And I'm right....

...Maybe....

...Definitely....

...Damien rolled his eyes....

...Lyra laughed—or at least he thought she did from the way her shoulders shook slightly....

...The sight alone was enough to make him grin....

...She glanced toward the clock hanging on the wall....

...Her expression changed....

...Damien immediately felt disappointed....

...She was leaving....

...I should go....

...The words appeared on the notebook a moment later....

...His chest sank....

...He hated how quickly he'd gotten used to her presence....

...Lyra gathered her things....

...Then she paused....

...She wrote one final sentence....

...See you tomorrow?...

...Damien stared at the question....

...Tomorrow....

...She wanted to come back....

...To see him....

...He picked up the pen....

...I'd like that....

...A genuine smile spread across her face....

...Good....

...She tucked the notebook back toward him....

...Then she lifted her hand in a small wave....

...Damien waved back....

...He watched her leave through the glass doors....

...Sunlight briefly surrounded her before she disappeared into the crowd outside....

...The store suddenly felt emptier....

...Much emptier....

...Damien stood there for several seconds before returning to work....

...As he organized a shelf nearby, a shadow appeared beside him....

...His manager....

...The older man was looking at him with an amused expression....

...His lips moved....

...Damien looked up and read them....

...You've been smiling all afternoon....

...Damien immediately looked away....

...The manager smirked....

...Who was that girl?...

...Damien pretended not to understand....

...The manager rolled his eyes dramatically....

...Then he pointed toward the door where Lyra had left....

...Pretty. girl...

...you're ...

...Smiling....

...Damien groaned internally....

...The manager laughed silently and shook his head....

...Good for you, kid....

...Damien looked down at the products he was organizing, trying to hide his embarrassment....

...But the small smile on his face refused to disappear....

...That evening he returned home....

...The apartment looked exactly the same....

...The cracked ceiling....

...The worn furniture....

...The empty rooms....

...Nothing had changed....

...Yet somehow everything felt different....

...Damien sat on the edge of his bed and stared at the notebook page he had torn out earlier....

...The page where Lyra had written her name....

...Lyra....

...He traced the letters with his finger....

...A strange warmth settled inside him....

...Most people remembered that he was deaf....

...Lyra remembered that he was Damien....

...For the first time in years, the loneliness didn't feel quite so heavy....

...He lay down and stared at the ceiling....

...Tomorrow....

...She said she would come back tomorrow....

...And for the first time in a very long time......

...Damien found himself looking forward to the next day....

Little Things

...Damien woke up before his alarm....

...The faint morning light slipped through the curtains, painting soft golden lines across the walls of his apartment....

...For a few seconds, he simply lay there, staring at the ceiling....

...Then he remembered....

...Lyra....

...A small smile appeared on his face before he could stop it....

...He rubbed his forehead....

..."What is happening to me?"...

...He let out a quiet laugh....

...No one answered....

...The apartment remained as silent as ever....

...After getting ready, Damien looked at himself in the mirror....

...He frowned....

...His navy-blue hoodie looked decent enough....

...He ran a hand through his messy black hair....

...It refused to cooperate....

...After trying for almost a minute, he sighed....

..."Forget it."...

...He grabbed his bag and headed to work....

...The convenience store wasn't busy when Damien arrived....

...His manager looked up from the register....

..."You know," the older man said, making sure Damien could read his lips, "if you keep coming in this early, I'll start thinking you actually enjoy working here."...

...Damien smiled and took out his phone....

...Don't ruin my reputation....

...The manager laughed....

..."There's that smile again."...

...Damien rolled his eyes and walked away before the teasing could continue....

...An hour passed....

...Then another....

...Customers came and went....

...Damien helped an elderly woman carry a heavy shopping bag to her car....

...When he returned, Ethan leaned against the counter with a mischievous grin....

..."So..."...

...Damien looked at him suspiciously....

...Ethan exaggerated every word so Damien could read his lips....

..."Who. Is. She?"...

...Damien blinked....

..."What?"...

...Ethan pointed toward Damien's face....

..."You've smiled more in the last two days than you have in the last two years."...

...Damien quickly typed on his phone....

...You're imagining things....

...Ethan snorted....

..."Liar."...

...Before Damien could reply, the automatic doors slid open....

...His eyes instinctively lifted....

...Lyra....

...She walked inside wearing a cream-colored cardigan over a white dress. A canvas tote bag rested on her shoulder, and a sketchbook peeked out from the top....

...She spotted Damien immediately....

...Instead of waving, she walked straight to the counter....

...Ethan noticed the exchange....

...His grin grew wider....

..."Oh..."...

...He leaned closer to Damien....

..."So that's her."...

...Damien's ears turned red....

...He nudged Ethan away....

...Ethan laughed and disappeared into the storage room, leaving Damien alone just as Lyra reached the counter....

...She smiled....

..."Good morning."...

...Realizing what she'd done, she quickly laughed at herself....

..."Oh... right."...

...She pulled out her notebook....

...Good morning, Damien....

...Damien smiled and wrote beneath her words....

...Good morning, Lyra....

...She looked around the nearly empty store....

...Busy?...

...Not today....

...Lyra nodded thoughtfully....

...Then she reached into her tote bag and carefully pulled out a small paper bag....

...She slid it across the counter....

...Damien looked at it, confused....

...He pointed at himself....

...Lyra nodded....

...He slowly opened the bag....

...Inside was a warm chocolate muffin....

...His eyes widened....

...He looked back at her....

...What's this for? he wrote....

...Lyra shrugged....

...Breakfast....

...Damien frowned....

...You bought this for me?...

...She nodded....

...Yesterday you told me you only had bread for breakfast....

...Damien froze....

...He had mentioned that only once....

...Very casually....

...She remembered....

...He stared at the muffin before writing slowly,...

...You didn't have to do that....

...Lyra smiled....

...I know....

...Then why?...

...She thought for a moment before writing,...

...Because everyone deserves a proper breakfast....

...Damien looked at the words for a long time....

...No one had ever bought him breakfast before....

...Not because they felt sorry for him....

...Just because they cared....

...His throat tightened....

...He carefully closed the paper bag....

...Then he looked at Lyra and wrote,...

...Thank you....

...She smiled so brightly that it almost made him forget where he was....

...Just then, a loud voice echoed through the store....

..."Hey!"...

...Damien couldn't hear it....

...But he saw Lyra's smile disappear....

...He turned toward the entrance....

...Ryan stood there with two of his friends....

...A cruel grin spread across Ryan's face as his eyes landed on Damien....

...Then they shifted to Lyra....

...Something dark flickered in his expression....

...Damien's stomach tightened....

...He had seen that look before....

...And it never meant anything good....
