WHEN CHAOS MARRIED CALM
Chapter 1
The Banerjee household in Kolkata was unusually busy for a Sunday evening.
The aroma of luchi, kosha mangsho, aloor dum, and mishti doi filled the apartment. Relatives had arrived from different parts of the city. The dining table was overflowing with food, laughter, and unsolicited advice.
Meera Banerjee stood in the kitchen, tying her hair into a messy bun.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
Ma, why are so many people coming?
Her mother, Anindita, didn't look up from the stove.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
Because your Nanu wanted everyone together.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
Nanu wants everyone together every weekend.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
Then stop asking questions and carry those bowls.
Meera sighed dramatically.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
One day, I'll become successful enough to hire people for this.
Her younger sister Riya laughed.
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
You can't even carry a glass of water without dropping it.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
I am a graceful woman.
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
You fell over a sleeping dog yesterday.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
The dog changed position.
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
The dog was asleep.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
It was strategic movement.
Riya burst into laughter.
A few minutes later, everyone gathered around the dining table.
Nanu Prabir adjusted his glasses.
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
Where is Meera?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
Coming!
She shouted from the kitchen.
She emerged carrying a large bowl of mutton curry.
Everyone in the family knew it.
Her mother immediately looked nervous.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
Slowly.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
I know
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
Carefully
Meera Banerjee (FL)
I know
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
MEERA
Meera Banerjee (FL)
I KNOW
Unfortunately, confidence had never improved her balance.
Halfway to the table, her foot caught the corner of a rug.
For one horrifying second, time stopped.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
No...no.....no
The curry flew through the air.
Straight toward Uncle Debashish.
Silence.
Complete silence.
The entire family stared.
Debashish sat frozen.
His white kurta was now mostly brown.
A piece of potato slowly slid down his shoulder.
Riya fell off her chair laughing.
Nanu removed his glasses.
Anindita closed her eyes.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
Meera
Meera Banerjee (FL)
Yes, Ma?
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
What have you done?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
It attacked me.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
The curry attacked you?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
Unexpectedly
Uncle Debashish finally spoke.
FL uncle
I waited all week for this kurta.
Meera folded her hands immediately.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
I'm Sorry
Aunt Soma couldn't stop laughing.
FL Aunty
At least now the kurta smells delicious.
The entire table erupted into laughter.Even Debashish started chuckling.Meera collapsed into a chair dramatically.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
This family never appreciates my sacrifices.
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
Sacrifices?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
I personally seasoned Uncle's outfit.
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
Get Out
The teasing did not.For the next thirty minutes.Every conversation somehow returned to Meera.
"Remember when she locked herself on the balcony?"
"Remember when she sent her professor a meme instead of an assignment?"
"Remember when she forgot her own birthday interview?"
Meera pointed at everyone.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
I hate all of you.
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
No, you don't.
She smiled.
No.
She really didn't.
After dinner, the family gathered in the living room. The elders discussed politics. The younger cousins argued over movies.
Meera sat beside Nanu. He patted her head.
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
How is your project?
Her expression brightened instantly.
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
What are you working on now?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
I'm preparing a proposal.
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
For the education initiative?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
She nodded.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
I want to create learning centers for girls in rural areas.
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
You've wanted this since school.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
I still do.
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
And marriage?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
Naaannuuu
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
What?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
You always ruin good conversations.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I'm serious," she continued.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I don't want marriage right now."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"Why?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Because I have plans."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"You can have both."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Maybe."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"Maybe?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Maybe later."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"You want someone who understands your dreams."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Exactly."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"Someone who supports you."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Yes."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"Someone kind."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Obviously."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"Someone patient."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Definitely."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"Someone mature."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"You're describing a husband suspiciously well."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"I am old. We think about these things."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I'll think about it when I'm thirty."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"Your mother will faint."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Then don't tell her."
Later that night, after everyone left, Meera sat near her bedroom window. The city lights flickered in the distance. Her phone buzzed.
A message from her best friend, Nisha.
Nisha (FL friend)
📩How was family dinner?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
Meera typed immediately.
📩 I accidentally threw mutton curry on my uncle.
A reply came within seconds.
Nisha (FL friend)
📩 Again?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
📩 First Time.
Nisha (FL friend)
📩Are you sure?
Meera Banerjee (FL)
📩Leave me alone.
Nisha (FL friend)
📩😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Meera Banerjee (FL)
Meera rolled her eyes.
Then she looked at the folder open on her laptop.
*Future Foundation Project.*
Her dream. Her goal. The thing she wanted more than anything. Marriage wasn't even on the list. Not now. Maybe not for years.
She had no idea that somewhere in Mumbai, another family was having a very different conversation. A conversation that would soon turn her carefully planned life upside down.
And the name at the center of that conversation was—
Chapter 2
Monday mornings were cruel. Meera firmly believed this. Especially when the alarm rang at six-thirty. She buried her face deeper into the pillow.
Five more minutes.
Then ten.
Then fifteen.
The next thing she knew, her mother was standing beside the bed.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
Meera.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"Meera."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"MEERA."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I'm awake!"
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"You said that ten minutes ago."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I was emotionally awake."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"Get ready."
Anindita left the room before Meera could continue her defense.
An hour later, the Banerjee apartment returned to its normal rhythm.Nanu was reading the newspaper. Riya was arguing with her online shopping app.
Subhash Banerjee was drinking tea. Everything seemed peaceful.
Nobody paid much attention. Visitors were common. Anindita opened the door. A familiar face stood outside.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"Arundhati di!"
Unknown Person
"Can I come in?"
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"Of course."
Arundhati Sen was an old family friend.
She lived in Mumbai but frequently visited Kolkata. She was known for three things. Remembering everyone's birthdays. Giving excellent advice. And collecting marriage proposals like a professional recruiter.
The third habit made Meera nervous.
Twenty minutes later, everyone was seated in the living room.
Tea appeared. Biscuits appeared. Family gossip appeared. As always.
Meera entered carrying another tray.
Riya immediately whispered,
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"Be careful."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I hate you."
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"Love you too."
Arundhati Sen
"You've grown up."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"People keep saying that."
Arundhati Sen
"Because it's true."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I still feel twelve."
Arundhati Sen
"That explains a lot."
The room laughed. Meera narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
Something was coming. She could feel it. Years of experience had trained her instincts.
Arundhati placed a photograph on the table.
Anindita looked at the photograph first.
Then Subhash.
Then Nanu.
A strange silence followed.
Meera immediately became concerned.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"What happened?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Why is everyone looking serious?"
Still nothing.Riya leaned forward. Then her eyes widened.
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"Oh."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Oh what?"
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"No wonder."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"No wonder what?"
Riya looked delighted.
The traitor.
Finally, Anindita cleared her throat.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"Meera."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"We haven't said anything."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I know this tone."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"What tone?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"The marriage tone."
Nanu nearly choked on his tea.
Arundhati Sen
"At least hear me out."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Fine."
Arundhati Sen
"There is a family in Mumbai."
Arundhati Sen
"They're wonderful people."
Arundhati Sen
"The son is successful."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Definitely no."
Arundhati Sen
"Thirty-six years old."
Meera blinked.
Then blinked again.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Thirty-six?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I am twenty-four."
Arundhati Sen
"We can do mathematics."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"That is a twelve-year difference."
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"Your calculations are impressive."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Not helping."
Arundhati Sen
"His name is Aarav Malhotra."
Meera leaned back dramatically
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Sounds serious."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"The name."
Arundhati Sen
"The name sounds serious?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Yes."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I don't know. It just does."
Everyone stared.
Nanu finally said,
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"That may be the strangest argument I've ever heard."
The photograph eventually reached Meera. Against her will. She glanced down. And paused.
The man in the picture was undeniably handsome. Sharp features. Confident posture. Dark eyes. A formal suit. The expression of someone who definitely scheduled his happiness three weeks in advance.
Exactly the kind of person she couldn't imagine marrying.
Too composed.
Too polished.
Too serious.
Too everything.
She handed the photograph back.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"You haven't even heard about him."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I heard enough."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"What exactly?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Thirty-six."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"So?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"He probably sleeps at nine."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"He probably owns matching socks."
Subhash rubbed his forehead.
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"What is wrong with matching socks?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Nothing."
She pointed at the photograph.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"But he definitely owns them."
Arundhati Sen
"He's respectful."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Good."
Arundhati Sen
"Responsible."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Excellent."
Arundhati Sen
"Family-oriented."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Wonderful."
Arundhati Sen
"Successful."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Fantastic."
Arundhati Sen
"Then what's the problem?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I don't want to get married."
The room went quiet. This wasn't new information. Everyone already knew. But hearing it spoken aloud always carried weight.
Nanu looked at her carefully.
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"What do you want, Meera?"
The answer came instantly.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"My foundation."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"Your education project?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I want to build something meaningful."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"You still can."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Maybe."
She looked around the room.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"But I don't want marriage to become the center of my life."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Right now, I want to become someone first."
Her father smiled softly.
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"You already are someone."
The words warmed her heart.
But they didn't change her mind.
The discussion ended there. At least officially. The photograph disappeared. Tea was finished. Arundhati moved on to other topics. Yet somehow the atmosphere felt different. As if a stone had been dropped into calm water. And the ripples were still spreading.
That evening, Meera sat at her desk working on her project proposal. Everything should have been normal. Instead, her thoughts kept wandering.
Annoying.
Very annoying.
She found herself remembering the photograph.
The calm expression.
The formal suit.
The serious eyes.
The impossible age gap.
She groaned.
Why was she thinking about him?
At the same time, nearly two thousand kilometers away in Mumbai, another conversation was taking place.
Inside the Malhotra residence. Savita Malhotra placed a photograph on the dining table. Her son looked up from his laptop.
Savita Malhotra (ML Mother)
"Aarav."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
"Hmm?"
Savita Malhotra (ML Mother)
"There's a proposal."
Without looking at the picture, he answered calmly.
His mother sighed.
His grandmother started laughing.
And somewhere in Kolkata, Meera sneezed.
A completely meaningless coincidence.
Or perhaps the first tiny sign that two stubborn strangers were already moving toward the same destiny.
Chapter 3
The next morning, Meera woke up with a single goal. Forget Aarav Malhotra existed. Simple. Reasonable. Achievable.Unfortunately, her family had other plans.
She entered the dining room and immediately knew something was wrong. Everyone was being suspiciously nice. Her mother smiled. Her father smiled. Even Riya smiled.
That was the most alarming part.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Why is everyone smiling?"
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"No reason,"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"That was a lie."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"It was not."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"It absolutely was."
Nanu folded his newspaper.
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"I agree with Meera."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Thank you."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"The room feels dangerous."
Riya placed a plate of toast in front of her.
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"Eat."
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"Why?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"You're being kind."
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"So?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"You only act this nice when you're planning something."
Riya gasped dramatically.
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"I am deeply offended."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Good."
For ten peaceful minutes, breakfast continued normally.
Then Subhash cleared his throat.
There it was.
The trap.
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"Meera."
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"I haven't said anything."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I know."
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"Then how can you say no?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Experience."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"Solid argument."
Subhash tried not to laugh.
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"At least listen."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
She sighed.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Fine."
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"Arundhati called this morning."
Meera immediately stood up.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I'm leaving."
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"Sit down."
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"Sit."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
Reluctantly, she sat again.
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"She spoke with the Malhotra family."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"And?"
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"They would like to meet us."
Anindita pinched the bridge of her nose.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"Meera."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I already answered."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"You haven't met him."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I don't need to."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"Why?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
She counted on her fingers.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"One. I don't want marriage."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Two. He's twelve years older."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Three. He probably drinks green tea willingly."
Riya nearly choked on her juice.
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"What kind of reason is that?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"A valid one."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"What if he's nice?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I'm sure he's nice."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"What if he's intelligent?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I'm sure he is."
Prabir Banerjee ( FL Nanu)
"What if he's perfect?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Then he'll find someone perfect."
The room fell quiet. For a moment, her joking tone disappeared. She looked genuinely serious.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I'm not ready."
Her father studied her face. Not the stubborn expression. Not the dramatic one. The honest one.
Subhash Banerjee (FL Father)
"You really don't want this."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
She shook her head. "No."
Anindita reached across the table.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"No one is forcing you."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Feels like it."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"We aren't."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Then why keep asking?"
Her mother's voice softened.
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"Because we're your parents."
Anindita Banerjee (FL Mother)
"We worry."
The words carried no pressure. Only love. Which somehow made them harder to argue with.
After breakfast, Meera escaped to her room. The safest place in the apartment. No proposals. No marriage discussions. No photographs. Just her laptop and work. Perfect. Or so she thought.
Five minutes later, Riya entered.
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Go away."
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"No."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I'm working."
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"I know."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Then leave."
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"I came to help."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"With what?"
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"Let's be honest."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"Dangerous beginning."
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"You looked at the photograph longer than you admitted."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I did not."
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"You absolutely did."
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"I was analyzing."
Riya Banerjee (FL Younger sister)
"What?"
Meera Banerjee (FL)
"The threat level."
Riya laughed so hard she nearly fell off the chair.
The Malhotra household was experiencing a remarkably similar conversation.
Aarav Malhotra sat at the dining table, reading emails while drinking coffee. His morning routine rarely changed. He liked it that way. Predictability was peaceful. Until his grandmother arrived. Predictability immediately disappeared.
Dadi Shakuntala dropped into the chair opposite him.
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"Aarav."
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
She blinked.
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"I haven't spoken."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
"You don't need to."
Savita laughed from the kitchen.
Dadi pointed dramatically.
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"See? This is the problem."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
"What is?"
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"You've become too smart."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
"I inherited that from you."
She smiled despite herself.
Smooth. Very smooth.
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"Aarav."
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"Look at the photograph."
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"Just once."
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"Please?"
His younger brother Kabir entered.
Kabir Malhotra (ML Younger brother)
"What are we refusing today?"
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"Marriage."
Kabir Malhotra (ML Younger brother)
Kabir nodded.
"Excellent choice."
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
Their mother glared.
"Both of you stop encouraging each other."
Dadi slid the photograph across the table. Against his will. Aarav glanced down. And paused. Just briefly. A very brief pause. So brief that nobody noticed. Except Dadi. Who noticed everything.
The woman in the photograph was smiling. Brightly. Naturally. The kind of smile that filled a room. Messy hair. Expressive eyes. No attempt to look sophisticated. She looked alive. Which was oddly refreshing.
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"Aarav?"
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
He looked away immediately.
"No."
Kabir Malhotra (ML Younger brother)
Kabir grinned.
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"You looked."
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"Same thing."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
"It isn't."
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"It absolutely is."
Savita Malhotra (ML Mother)
"What's your objection?"
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
He answered honestly.
"She's too young."
Savita Malhotra (ML Mother)
Twelve years."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
"Exactly."
Savita Malhotra (ML Mother)
"You're acting as if you're seventy."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
"I am thirty-six."
Savita Malhotra (ML Mother)
"And?"
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
He sighed.
"And she's probably at a completely different stage of life."
His mother considered that. Fair point. Very fair. But still.
Savita Malhotra (ML Mother)
"You haven't met her."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
"I don't need to."
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"Wonderful."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
"What?"
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"You two are identical."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
Aarav frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"The girl said the same thing."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
That finally caught his attention.
"What?"
Shakuntala Malhotra (ML Dadi)
"She refused immediately."
Kabir Malhotra (ML Younger brother)
Kabir burst out laughing.
"Oh, this is getting interesting."
Aarav Malhotra (ML)
"It is not."
Kabir Malhotra (ML Younger brother)
"It absolutely is."
Aarav returned to his coffee. Conversation over. Decision made. Proposal rejected. Simple. Reasonable. Final.
At least, that's what he believed. Unfortunately for him... At that exact moment, two grandmothers, one in Kolkata and one in Mumbai, were speaking on the phone. And both had reached the same conclusion. These stubborn children needed help. A lot of help. And neither grandmother had ever accepted defeat in her entire life.
